The Virocene Epoch: The Vulnerability Nexus Of Viruses, Capitalism And Racism, Jude Fernando
The Virocene Epoch: The Vulnerability Nexus Of Viruses, Capitalism And Racism, Jude Fernando
Sustainability and Social Justice
COVID-19 has ushered in a new planetary epoch—the Virocene. In doing so, it has laid bare the limits of humanity’s power over nature, exposing the vulnerability of ‘normal’ ways of living and their moral and pragmatic bankruptcy in coping with those vulnerabilities. ‘Normal’ is powerless against the virus and has not worked for a majority of the world’s human and non-human population. Whatever new normal humanity fashions depends on the socio-ecological change set in motion by mutations between human and non-human species. The outcomes of society’s responses to the pandemic depend on how human agency, as an embodiment of social, …
The Sanctuary Of Prosecutorial Nullification, Zohra Ahmed
The Sanctuary Of Prosecutorial Nullification, Zohra Ahmed
Scholarly Works
In the aftermath of the 2016 election, the shortcomings of existing sanctuary protections came sharply into focus.1 Historically, cities enacted sanctuary protections to extricate their law enforcement agencies from activities related to federal immigration enforcement. In sanctuary cities, local government agencies are typically restricted from sharing information with federal immigration authorities or from cooperating in apprehending individuals targeted for removal.2 After the White House issued an Executive Order (EO) in late January 2017, many immigrant rights advocates recognized that external facing policies that proscribed direct cooperation would not suffice.3 The EO announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would prioritize …
Household Risk Factors For Malaria Among Children Under 10 In Southwest Burkina Faso, Mckenzie Colt
Household Risk Factors For Malaria Among Children Under 10 In Southwest Burkina Faso, Mckenzie Colt
Public Health Theses
Malaria transmission occurs both indoors and outdoors, and housing and peri-domestic characteristics have been associated with higher risks of malaria. Previous research in Burkina Faso has demonstrated that vector density within households varies greatly, though contributing factors are less clear. In the context of a cluster-randomized trial in a rural region of southwest Burkina Faso, the associations between household structural and behavioral factors with vector density will be presented. General household surveys were completed detailing the external housing characteristics of wall and roof materials, number of individual sleeping rooms, number of individuals in the household, and ITN use. All enrolled …

Creating An Antibody Digestive Curve In Cx. Quinquefasciatus Mosquitoes, Christina Ann Harden
Public Health Theses
Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an endemic arbovirus of increasing importance
in the United States. It is perpetuated via an enzootic cycle between Culiseta melanura
mosquitoes and avian reservoirs. In the northeast, transmission has distinct seasonality
and its overwintering mechanism is unknown. Xenosurveillance has been identified as a
possible way to elucidate viral circulation dynamics in states such as Connecticut that are
experiencing a resurgence of human EEE cases, potentially exacerbated by factors
associated with global climate change. This study sought to experimentally create an
antibody digestive curve for both mammalian and avian bloodmeals in Cx. quinquefasciatus
mosquitoes. Using …

Cardiovascular Outcomes In Hypertension As Defined By Proof-Bp Using Nhanes 2015-2016, Kamran Javadi
Public Health Theses
Hypertension is one of the most common medical conditions, affecting nearly one-third of Americans.1 Chronic high blood pressure is the cause of numerous cardiovascular diseases which cost the United States over $100 billion annually.1 The American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association have recently challenged the previous definition of hypertension by suggesting those with a blood pressure of ≥130/80 mmHg now have the disease.2 This new threshold would classify nearly 50% of Americans as hypertensive.2 Establishing a diagnosis of hypertension can be difficult and resource intensive requiring patients to have serial recordings over 24-hours. Until recently there has been …

Investigating The Community-Level Variation In Hookworm Prevalence In The Kpandai District, Ghana: A Mixed-Methods Study, Harry Hyunteh Hyunteh Kim
Public Health Theses
Soil-transmitted helminths are a major cause of disability and morbidity in resource-poor settings: over 1.5 billion are estimated to be at risk of infection. Human behaviors and household socioeconomic conditions that facilitate contact with contaminated soil may increase exposure to parasites. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the community-level variation in hookworm prevalence in the Kpandai district of Ghana.
We used a mixed-methods approach to investigate behavioral, societal and environmental risk factors to hookworm exposure. 264 individuals from three neighboring villages (Jagbigbingdo [JG], Takumdo [TK], Wiae Chabor [WC]) were recruited using a convenience sampling strategy. Household questionnaires …

Public Health Theses
ABSTRACT
Refugees are among some of the most vulnerable populations in our world today. Food insecurity appears to be a consistent state among many refugee populations regardless of length of refugee status and setting. The primary study aims were to: a) identify factors influencing refugees’ ability to manage their chronic illnesses; b) describe food insecurity and dietary intake among refugees with chronic illnesses; c) understand the role food baskets play for this population.
A cross-sectional mixed methods study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 consisted of 10 in-depth interviews with older adult refugees to identify factors influencing their management …
Promoting Ecosystem And Human Health Under Climate Change ——An Integrated Analysis Of Sustainable Olive Cultivation In Cyprus, Ningjing Wang
Promoting Ecosystem And Human Health Under Climate Change ——An Integrated Analysis Of Sustainable Olive Cultivation In Cyprus, Ningjing Wang
Public Health Theses
Achieving agricultural sustainability has become a high priority to ensure society’s current and future food needs without compromising ecosystem health, economic profitability, and human well-being. Organic agriculture has been proposed as an alternative to conventional farming for meeting sustainable goals. However, empirical evidence linking organic farming, human health, and sustainability in the context of climate change is scarce. In addition, previous studies comparing organic and conventional agriculture have not considered the variation in farming practices within the same management regime.
In this study, a multi-criteria sustainability assessment framework with ten indicators has been developed and proposed for sustainable olive cultivation …

Speech, Innovation, And Competition, Greg Day
Speech, Innovation, And Competition, Greg Day
Scholarly Works
Critics contend that concentrated power in digital markets has generated threats to free speech. For a variety of reasons, market power is naturally thought to concentrate in digital markets. The consequence is that “big tech” is said to face little competition; Facebook controls 72 percent of the social media market while the parent of YouTube (72 percent of the video market) is Google (92 percent of the search market). This landscape has potentially vested private companies with unprecedented power over the flow of information. If Facebook, for example, decides to ban certain types of speech or ideas, it would potentially …
Taking A Joke Seriously: When Does Humor Affect Responses To The Slurring Of People With Intellectual Disabilities?, Jennifer Katz, Dimitri Wing-Paul
Taking A Joke Seriously: When Does Humor Affect Responses To The Slurring Of People With Intellectual Disabilities?, Jennifer Katz, Dimitri Wing-Paul
Psychology
The use of humor may affect how bystanders respond to slurs. Undergraduates (N = 192) completed a measure of prejudice towards people with intellectual disabilities and were randomly assigned to read a scenario in which a peer uses a slur either as part of a joke (humor condition) or a statement (control condition). Participants responded to measures of intent to assertively respond and their evaluation of the speaker. Humor inhibited intent to nonverbally disagree and to verbally confront. Bystanders’ own prejudicial attitudes moderated the effects of humor on intent to verbally confront and negative evaluation. In the humor condition, compared …

Mems Biosensor For Water-Immersed Application, Kun-Lin Lee
Mems Biosensor For Water-Immersed Application, Kun-Lin Lee
Dissertations and Theses
Although many air-based sensing mechanisms exist, not all of them can be applied in the water-based environment. In order to obtain a cell-based biosensor, the sensing method needs to be reliable and repeatable in a liquid environment. Therefore, this study is focused on transforming existing air-based sensors to water-immersed applications. This study includes two types of sensors.
First, commercial quartz resonators are used to investigate live-cell activity in water-based toxic solutions. I perform toxicity tests using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The QCM used in the study has a resonant frequency of 10 MHz and consists of an AT-cut quartz crystal …
Influence Of Transdermal Current Flow In Tdcs-Induced Cutaneous Adverse Events, Niranjan Khadka
Influence Of Transdermal Current Flow In Tdcs-Induced Cutaneous Adverse Events, Niranjan Khadka
Dissertations and Theses
Significant contributors to the broad application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are portability, ease-of-use, and tolerability; with adverse events limited to transient and mild cutaneous sensations (e.g. perception of burning, itching, and tingling) and erythema. However, the fundamental questions remain about the mechanism of transdermal current flow during transcranial electrical stimulation, including tDCS. Example of previously unexplained questions in tDCS include: 1) the relationship between tDCS-induced skin reddening (erythema) profile and local current density profile predicted by the model; 2) the source of burning sensation during tDCS and whether it is related to an actual skin heating; 3) the …
Diffuse Damage Repair Mechanism In Bone, Leila Mehraban Alvandi
Diffuse Damage Repair Mechanism In Bone, Leila Mehraban Alvandi
Dissertations and Theses
Bone microdamage is a result of fatigue, creep or ‘wear and tear’ caused by physiological activities and largely contributes to bone fragility. Bone, unlike engineered materials, has the ability to repair the microscopic cracking or microdamage through targeted, osteoclast-mediated bone remodeling. This capability is crucial for preservation of its structural integrity and quality; failure of the skeleton to effectively repair microdamage leads to accumulation of damage, which is one of the main contributors to bone fragility. Linear microcracks (50-100 µm) and diffuse damage (Dif.Dx) (sub-micron) are the two types of microdamage. Recent studies show that Dif.Dx repairs without bone remodeling, …
Characterization Of Bone Pathology In Sickle Cell Disease And Therapeutic Strategies, Mykel D. Green
Characterization Of Bone Pathology In Sickle Cell Disease And Therapeutic Strategies, Mykel D. Green
Dissertations and Theses
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic hemoglobinopathy that has grown into a global health concern. While the advances in medical treatment and management of SCD during childhood have drastically improved the overall survival of children, the transition from pediatric to adult services is significantly inadequate in comparison. Life expectancies of patients with SCD in first world countries such as the United States are shortened to averages of 42 and 48 years for men and women, respectively. Despite the increasing number of people living with SCD, remarkably, few detailed studies have described the clinical course and complications of the disease …

Oscar Wilde depicts different views on life and art. The stories selected have common themes of wealth (monetary/non-monatary), love, devotion, self-destruction and death:: The Picture of Dorian Gray, "The Happy Prince," "The Devoted Friend," "The Selfish Giant," and "The Rose and the Nightingale." These four fairy tales tie in nicely with Wilde's novel to show the true value of life and art.
The Paganist Totem Birds In Slavic Folklore: The Black And The White, Anastasia Radzievska
The Paganist Totem Birds In Slavic Folklore: The Black And The White, Anastasia Radzievska
Dissertations and Theses
It is believed that pagan cosmology once ran strong through the Slavic countries and traces are visible through the passed down folklore that spread through the land. While we talk of animals and their representation in folklore, we usually only refer to the Christian written western folklore, but these pagan born animals stand in strong contrast to them. The Slavic people believed that the world was made of diverse natural forces that shared what the Earth had to offer and worked in unison to protect one another, whereas the Christian belief saw the world as a distinct separation of man …

The Cultural Dual Identity In Cristina Garcia's Dreaming In Cuban And Julia Alvarez's How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Azahria John-Otway
Dissertations and Theses
Cristina Garcia's Dreaming in Cuban and Julia Alvarez's How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents are two novels that explore the effects immigration can have on the development of one's identity, respectively. Throughout both novels, it is understood that in order for an immigrant to have a sense of belonging, an exploratory journey of the self must be made. In making this journey, literally and figuratively, the immigrant person begins to appreciate their homeland and immigrated home, thus feeling a sense of belonging and accepting they are of a cultural dual identity.
