Empowering The Girl-Child Through Digital Media Literacy: The Role Of Academic Libraries, Opeyemi R. Oboh Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The girl child in times past has suffered marginalization due to the patriarchal sentiment that is pervasive in the society most especially in the developing countries. However, a ray of hope has shone on them as more voices of advocacy have risen to defend and project the value of a girl child towards societal development and the need to empower this class of gender for sustainable development. Technology is a great enabler for the empowerment of the girl-child, however, there are still traces of inadequate of opportunities, skills and the fear of discrimination which serve as stumbling block to the …

The Arab World Facing A Development Challenge: Climatic Changes, Diffalah Khaouni
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
The Arab world, as in the rest of the world, faces the problem of climate change with unprecedented effect on economic development. Although the number of effects is very large, the Arab world cannot identify them because of the difficulties of adaptation and non-climatic factors. We will see declines in agricultural crops, short vegetable seasons, disturbances in rainfall, access to groundwater will become difficult, and many unwanted aspects of health such as infectious and chronic diseases and an increase in the number of deaths. The desert sands continue to crawl into the agricultural lands and cities everywhere in the Arab …

Bayesian And Frequentist Approaches Robustness In Variance Components Estimation, Hamdy F. F. Mahmoud
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Variance components and functions thereof are important in many fields such as industry, agriculture, quantitative genetics and animal breeding. This paper contributes to evaluating the variance components estimation approaches and assessing their robustness to outliers. Using an intensive simulation study and under different settings, it was found that researchers can decide which method of estimation is appropriate to their study to estimate the variance components based on the source of outliers (error term, εi j or random effects, αi), the variance components ratio, and the sample size.

Accelerated Life Test Plans And Age-Replacement Policy Under Warranty On Burr Type-X Distribution With Type-Ii Censoring, Intekhab Alam, Arif Ul Islam, Aquil Ahmed
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, we describe how to design and analyze the accelerated life testing (ALTg) plans for the improvement of the quality and the reliability of the product. We also focus on finding the expected cost rate and the expected total cost for age-replacement under warranty policy. The problem is studied using constant stress, under the assumption that the lifetimes of the units follow Burr Type-X distribution for predicting the cost of age replacement under warranty policy. Asymptotic variance and covariance matrix of the estimators are obtained by using the Fisher Information Matrix. Confidence intervals for parameters and respective errors …
The Architecture Of The Dead: Cemetery Symbolism In Colon Cemetery, Havana, Cuba, Dana Moody
The Architecture Of The Dead: Cemetery Symbolism In Colon Cemetery, Havana, Cuba, Dana Moody
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The purpose of this study was to document and define symbolic imagery found within the grounds of the Colon Cemetery in Havana, Cuba. Memorials erected to the dead use symbology to tell stories about the departed, giving us clues to the deceased’s values and philosophies, as well as their religion, ethnicity, social memberships, occupations, education, level of wealth, and thoughts on the afterlife (Keister, 2004). Using images of Colon Cemetery from a photographic documentary series, Havana: Behind the Facade, architectural and cemetery symbology was grouped into categories, researched for meaning, and sought for interpretations to reveal clues about Cuban culture …

Preface
In times of increasing demand for social equality, adherence to human rights and the tackling of global warming, awareness of sustainable investments is becoming more important in the context of the economic prosperity of a country. Investors, from the institutional as well as the private side, can support environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues by investing in sustainable assets. This research contributes to analysing the sustainable investment market in Europe and to developing market segments for the future. Socially Responsible Investments (SRIs) integrate ESG aspects into the decision-making process, whereby investments only focussing on the E (environmental aspects) are …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Cultivar disease resistance ratings to nodorum blotch (caused by Parastagonospora nodorum) provide critical information to growers to assist with disease management. However, less has been done in terms of yield losses from diseases under different cultivar resistance scenarios. The purpose of this study was to characterize yield and quality loss responses to wheat nodorum blotch as influenced by variety partial resistance, epidemic intensity, and environment. The trial series includes four site/years in Western Australia. Five varieties, Magenta, Calingiri, Trojan, Janz, and Scout were used for all four trials. These varieties represented resistant/susceptible categories MRMS, MS, MSS, S, and SVS, …

SRX246 is a vasopressin (AVP) 1a receptor antagonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It reduced impulsive aggression, fear, depression and anxiety in animal models, blocked the actions of intranasal AVP on aggression/fear circuits in an experimental medicine fMRI study and demonstrated excellent safety in Phase 1 multiple-ascending dose clinical trials. The present study was a 3-arm, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 12-week, dose escalation study of SRX246 in early symptomatic Huntington's disease (HD) patients with irritability. Our goal was to determine whether SRX246 was safe and well tolerated in these HD patients given its potential use for the treatment of problematic …

Spontaneity And The Supernatural: Simulating Improv On Twine, Angelica Zadak
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
This thesis is an improv-based digital role-playing game (RPG) created on Twine titled Spontaneity and the Supernatural. The game synthesizes Dustin Edward’s scholarship on remix and digital rhetoric, Kathleen Blake Yancy and Stephen J. McElroy’s application of assemblage theory in composition, and Viola Spolin’s improv theory and practices to take improv from the stage to a digital space. This game uses Twine as a development tool to deliver improv concepts, such as Spolin’s ensemble, environment, and intuition, procedurally. To incorporate these elements into the game, the thesis engages potential players with a narrative that suggests all players can practice improv …

Compost bedded pack (CBP) barns have been receiving increased attention as an alternative housing system for dairy cattle. To create a satisfactory environment within CBP barns that promotes a good composting process, an adequate air movement and minimal temperature fluctuations throughout the building are required. Therefore, a study based on compost barn structure model employing techniques of dimensional analysis for naturally ventilated buildings was developed. Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of compost barns with different ridge designs and wind direction, along with the visual demonstration of the impact on airflow through structure were performed. The results showed that the …

Interleukin-17a Facilitates Chikungunya Virus Infection By Inhibiting Ifn-Α2 Expression, Biswas Neupane, Dhiraj Acharya, Farzana Nazneen, Gabriel Gonzalez-Fernandez, Alex Sutton Flynt, Fengwei Bai
Faculty Publications
Interferons (IFNs) are the key components of innate immunity and are crucial for host defense against viral infections. Here, we report a novel role of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) in inhibiting IFN-α2 expression thus promoting chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection. CHIKV infected IL-17A deficient (Il17a−/−) mice expressed a higher level of IFN-α2 and developed diminished viremia and milder footpad swelling in comparison to wild-type (WT) control mice, which was also recapitulated in IL-17A receptor-deficient (Il17ra−/−) mice. Interestingly, IL-17A selectively blocked IFN-α2 production during CHIKV, but not West Nile virus (WNV) or Zika virus (ZIKV), infections. Recombinant IL-17A …

We developed an agent-based gastric simulator for a human host to illustrate the within host survival mechanisms of Listeria monocytogenes. The simulator incorporates the gastric physiology and digestion processes that are critical for pathogen survival in the stomach. Mathematical formulations for the pH dynamics, stomach emptying time, and survival probability in the presence of gastric acid are integrated in the simulator to evaluate the portion of ingested bacteria that survives in the stomach and reaches the small intestine. The parameters are estimated using in vitro data relevant to the human stomach and L. monocytogenes. The simulator predicts that 5%–29% of …

Radial Basis Densities And The Density Functional-Based Atom-In-Molecule: Designing Charge-Transfer Potentials, Godwin Amo-Kwao
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Classical potentials that are capable of describing charge transfer and charge polarization in complex systems are of central importance for classical atomistic simulation of biomolecules and materials. Current potentials—regardless of the system—do not generalize well, and, with the exception of highly-specialized empirical potentials tuned for specific systems, cannot describe chemical bond formation and breaking. The charge-transfer embedded atom method (CT-EAM), a formal, DFT-based extension to the original EAM for metals, has been developed to address these issues by modeling charge distortion and charge transfer in interacting systems using pseudoatom building blocks instead of the electron densities of isolated atoms. CT-EAM …

Theses
Wait explores concepts of discomfort and acceptance through the use of the human body, glass, and honey. The artwork and this thesis both use personal experience of physical insecurities and scholarly investigations into psychology related to unruly bodies. The work and research allude to the material qualities of glass such as its malleability, susceptibility, and softness to draw a parallel between the materials and the human identity. Parallels between glass and body create conversations investigating acceptance of identity and questions ideas about resistance of unruly bodies.

Efficacy Of Phytochemicals In Inhibiting Horizontal Gene Transfer Of Antibiotic Resistance Between Multidrug Resistant Salmonella And Commensal E. Coli, Poonam Vinayamohan
Doctoral Dissertations
Bacterial antibiotic resistance (AR) imposes a huge threat to public health worldwide. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human medicine and animal agriculture resulted in the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria, including pathogens. Bacteria possess an inherent ability to share their genetic information by means of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), a property that favors dissemination of AR genes among neighboring bacteria. The animal gut, the reservoir of AR bacteria and AR genes, acts as a source for environmental contamination and propagation of AR through manure and water. There has been an increased incidence of AR Salmonella infections in humans in …

The RYR1 gene, which encodes the sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium release channel or type 1 ryanodine receptor (RyR1) of skeletal muscle, was sequenced in 1988 and RYR1 variations that impair calcium homeostasis and increase susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia were first identified in 1991. Since then, RYR1-related myopathies (RYR1-RM) have been described as rare, histopathologically and clinically heterogeneous, and slowly progressive neuromuscular disorders. RYR1 variants can lead to dysfunctional RyR1-mediated calcium release, malignant hyperthermia susceptibility, elevated oxidative stress, deleterious post-translational modifications, and decreased RyR1 expression. RYR1-RM-affected individuals can present with delayed motor milestones, contractures, scoliosis, ophthalmoplegia, and respiratory insufficiency.Historically, RYR1-RM-affected individuals were …

BACKGROUND: Manual analysis of cross-sectional area, fiber-type distribution, and total and centralized nuclei in skeletal muscle cross sections is tedious and time consuming, necessitating an accurate, automated method of analysis. While several excellent programs are available, our analyses of skeletal muscle disease models suggest the need for additional features and flexibility to adequately describe disease pathology. We introduce a new semi-automated analysis program, MyoSight, which is designed to facilitate image analysis of skeletal muscle cross sections and provide additional flexibility in the analyses.
RESULTS: We describe staining and imaging methods that generate high-quality images of immunofluorescent-labelled cross sections from mouse …
