Lexical Items As Facets Of Identity In Discourse, Joseph C. M. Davis
Lexical Items As Facets Of Identity In Discourse, Joseph C. M. Davis
Publications and Research
Lexical items are used in discourse not to provide objective direct reference, nor to reflect a language’s system of categorization, nor in accordance with cognitive categories, but rather to communicate different perspectives. Lexical items function as facets of identity, chosen by an author to convey a subjective message. The point is illustrated through an analysis of lexical co-reference in Antonio Tabucchi’s Donna di Porto Pim e altre storie.
The Effect Of Long-Term Stress On Hippocampus And The Involvement In The Pathophysiology Of Psychological Disorders, Suicide, And Alcohol Use Disorder, Hinza Batool Malik
The Effect Of Long-Term Stress On Hippocampus And The Involvement In The Pathophysiology Of Psychological Disorders, Suicide, And Alcohol Use Disorder, Hinza Batool Malik
Undergraduate Research Awards
The hyperactivity of the HPA axis due to long-term stress results in an abnormally high level of glucocorticoids. A limbic system structure, the hippocampus has the highest number of receptor sites for glucocorticoids. Thus, making it highly vulnerable to damage during elevated levels of glucocorticoids, through neurotoxicity and metabolic challenges. In addition, this paper largely focuses on the effects of stress on the hippocampus, e.g., changes in hippocampal volume, as a contributing factor in the psychophysiology of a myriad of mental health problems. Most disorders follow the diathesis-stress trajectory where the symptoms begin to precipitate once a major stressor is …
Sustainable Operations, Industry Performance, And Environmental Sustainability: A Case Study On U.S. Marine Fisheries And Pacific Bluefin Tuna, Kalyn Chapman
Undergraduate Research Awards
When thinking of the numerous industries we have across the United States, the environmental impacts created from their unsustainable operations is not always at the forefront of our thoughts. The fact that negative impacts on our environment can also create problems for our economy is often overlooked as well. The damaging impact marine fisheries in the United States have on our environment, and the cost it creates for the fishing industry, is a good example of this cycle between sustainable (or unsustainable) operations and productivity.
In this paper we ask the following: Has the implementation of sustainable practices in U.S. …
Migration As Reparation: Climate Change And The Disruption Of Borders, Carmen G. Gonzalez
Migration As Reparation: Climate Change And The Disruption Of Borders, Carmen G. Gonzalez
Faculty Publications & Other Works
This article examines the legal and moral basis for migration as a form of reparation for the harms inflicted on the states and peoples of the Global South through climate change and through centuries of predatory economic policies. Using Central American migration to the United States as a case study, the article explains that susceptibility to climate change is a function of two variables: exposure and social and economic vulnerability. High-emitting affluent states are disproportionately responsible for Central America’s exposure to climate change due to their historic and current greenhouse gas emissions, their unwillingness to curb these emissions, and their …

Increasing social and political polarization in our society continues to exact a heavy toll marked by, among other social ills, a rise in uncivility, an increase in reported hate crimes, and a more pronounced overall climate of intolerance--for viewpoints, causes, and identities alike. Intolerance, either a cause or a consequence of our fraying networks of social engagement, is rampant, hindering our ability to live up to our de facto national motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” or “Out of Many, One” and prompting calls for how best to build a cohesive civil society. Within the public school--an institution conceived primarily for the …
Arbitration Of Worker Contracts: New Prime's Proper Statutory Interpretation Of The 1925 Federal Arbitration Act, Margaret L. Moses
Arbitration Of Worker Contracts: New Prime's Proper Statutory Interpretation Of The 1925 Federal Arbitration Act, Margaret L. Moses
Faculty Publications & Other Works
In 1925, the Congress that adopted the Federal Arbitration Act did not intend for it to cover any workers’ contracts. However, this changed dramatically when the Supreme Court determined in Circuit City Stores, Inc. v. Adams (2001) that all workers’ contracts were covered except for transportation workers. Thus, today, thousands of workers are forced into adhesion contracts requiring arbitration. However, the recent unanimous decision of the Supreme Court in New Prime v. Oliveira unequivocally declares that the proper way to interpret the Act is to give it the meaning it had when Congress enacted the statute. This very reasonable conclusion …

"I'D Gladly Pay You Tuesday For A [Tax Deduction] Today": Donor-Advised Funds And The Deferral Of Charity, Samuel D. Brunson
Faculty Publications & Other Works
In recent years, donor-advised funds have become an increasingly popular vehicle for charitable giving. In part, their popularity can be traced to a disconnect in the law: donor-advised funds look in many ways like private foundations, but the tax law treats them as public charities. This disconnect is advantageous to donors. Because Congress was worried about wealthy individuals' ability to take advantage of the control they can exercise over private foundations, it imposed a series of additional tax rules on private foundations. These rules, among other things, limit the deductibility of donations to private foundations, require that private foundations make …
Immigration Policy As A Defense Of White Nationhood, Juan F. Perea
Immigration Policy As A Defense Of White Nationhood, Juan F. Perea
Faculty Publications & Other Works
President Trump's vilification and expulsion of undocumented Latino migrants is only the latest episode of the mass expulsion of Latinos. This essay places Trump's border enforcement policies into historical context as a defense of white national identity. Despite many asserted justifications for this mistreatment of migrants and refugees, the only justification that survives scrutiny is the need to reassure anxious whites that their racial status is being defended.

Temperature Effects On Moose (Alces Alces) Activity Patterns In Isle Royale National Park, Isabella C. Evavold
Temperature Effects On Moose (Alces Alces) Activity Patterns In Isle Royale National Park, Isabella C. Evavold
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
Moose (Alces alces) in Isle Royale National Park impact the ecosystem by browsing tree species and serving as the primary food source for wolves. As a heat-sensitive species, moose are susceptible to the impacts of climate change in the southern extent of their range which includes Isle Royale. Understanding how temperature impacts moose behavior is valuable and can be used to predict how moose may respond to changing temperature in the future. GPS enabled radio-collars with three-axis accelerometers were used to collect one year of temperature and activity data from 6 cow moose in Isle Royale National Park. …

Adults With Asd: Therapeutic Riding And Observed Social Behaviors And Stress Levels, Kayla Andersen
Adults With Asd: Therapeutic Riding And Observed Social Behaviors And Stress Levels, Kayla Andersen
Student Research Posters
Therapeutic riding (TR) is a multisensory experience that increases mental and physical heath by emphasizing skills such as verbal and non-verbal communication, behavioral and emotional control, and attention; additionally, improvements in balance and muscle strength occur in the rider (Bass et al., 2009). However, the present literature is lacking in research on how adults with ASD are impacted by participation in TR. The goal of the present study is to determine the impact of TR on social responsiveness and stress levels on adults with ASD which included a sample of 8 therapeutic riding instructors from the United States. Instructors reported …
Dynamic Balancing Of Foraging And Defensive Effort Contribute To The Optimality Of The Honey Bee Robbing Strategy, Grayson James Grume
Dynamic Balancing Of Foraging And Defensive Effort Contribute To The Optimality Of The Honey Bee Robbing Strategy, Grayson James Grume
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
The optimality of a foraging strategy shifts in response to dynamic ecological conditions and the need to devote effort to other tasks. Nest defense and foraging effort in the honey bee may trade off as both tasks are performed by a shared workforce of physiologically-specialized individuals in exclusive roles. Honey robbing is a foraging strategy predicted to benefit from simultaneous increases in foraging and defensive effort, but may be constrained by workforce specialization. We developed a methodology to induce robbing behaviors with uninhabited bait hives. We used this methodology to evaluate foraging and defensive effort before and during robbing by …
The Role Of Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Down-Regulated Protein 9 In Enhanced Aggressiveness Of Hexavalent Chromium Transformed Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Peter Van Wie
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is classified as a confirmed human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research and Cancer (IARC) and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Chronic exposure to (Cr(VI)) causes malignant cell transformation in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. These Cr(VI)-transformed cells exhibit a highly aggressive phenotype including increased migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. The Cas family protein neuronal precursor developmentally down regulated protein 9 (NEDD9/Cas-L/HEF1) was dramatically overexpressed in Cr(VI)-transformed cells compared to normal BEAS-2B cells. Knockdown of NEDD9 by its shRNA reduced migration and invasion in vitro measured by migration and invasion assays. shNEDD9 reduced tumor formation …

Approaches To Fracture Healing Under Inflammatory Conditions: Infection And Diabetes, Sean Vincent Cahill
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Non-union is a devastating complication of fracture and can be precipitated by abnormal
inflammatory states including infection and diabetes.
This thesis focuses on four related research problems that are addressed through original
scientific investigation and literature review. In addressing these questions, this dissertation
presents evidence for the following conclusions through in vivo animal models and using methods
including bacterial cell culture and counting, histology, radiography, and micro-computed
tomography:
1. Rifampin-loaded hydrogels decrease bacterial load and improve fracture healing in
a MRSA-infected open fracture model.
2. MRSA-infected nonunion is characterized by impaired chondrocyte maturation and
is associated with IL-1 and NF-KB …
Differential Response To Rituximab In Anti-Achr And Anti-Musk Positive Myasthenia Gravis Patients, Tess Litchman
Differential Response To Rituximab In Anti-Achr And Anti-Musk Positive Myasthenia Gravis Patients, Tess Litchman
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Response to immunomodulatory therapies in myasthenia gravis (MG) can be variable. A subset of MG patients remains refractory to conventional agents. B-cell targeted therapy with rituximab has demonstrated a durable response in treating refractory myasthenia gravis (MG). This study compares the response to rituximab between patients with acetylcholine receptor autoantibody positive (AChR+) and muscle-specific kinase autoantibody positive (MuSK+) MG.
This retrospective study included 33 patients with either AChR+ or MuSK+ MG who were treated with rituximab from 05/31/2003 to 05/31/2017. Pretreatment and post-treatment immunotherapy regimens, clinical symptoms, and examination findings were evaluated.
