Labor Redemption In Work Law, Andrew Elmore Dec 2020

Labor Redemption In Work Law, Andrew Elmore

Articles

People with criminal records are not a protected class under Title VII, and many employers fear that hiring people with criminal records invites negligent hiring liability. Ban the Box privacy laws delay but may not deter overbroad criminal background checks. This Article challenges this standard account by shifting focus to the state in imposing arbitrary barriers to work. I expose a dignity interest in the removal of these unnecessary barriers, or "labor redemption." I find foundations of labor redemption in successful constitutional challenges to denials of public employment and occupational licenses. Labor redemption is also, increasingly, a statutory right, in …

Emocolor : Fine-Grained Emotion Recognition From Skin Color Information, Maria Guadalupe Jimenez Velasco Dec 2020

Emocolor : Fine-Grained Emotion Recognition From Skin Color Information, Maria Guadalupe Jimenez Velasco

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In everyday human-to-human communication, emotions play a fundamental role. Emotions represent the affective behavior of humans that is multi-modal, subtle, and complex. Previous approaches based on conventional computer vision explicitly used shape information. Modern approaches based on deep learning implicitly exploit all information available in the image, but by their nature make it difficult to assess the contributions of each source of information. In addition, skin color as a unimodal technique to recognize emotions has been explored to recognize only three coarse-grained emotions in valence space. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first approach to fine-grained emotion …

A Lake Divided: Regional Shifts In Trophic Niche Structure Of Lake Powell Fishes Corresponding To The Invasion Of Quagga Mussels, Nathan Richard St Andre

Theses and Dissertations

Introduced species can become invasive and cause catastrophic alterations to the system they invade. Both zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussels (Dreissena bugensis) have caused significant ecosystem alterations wherever they have invaded. These Dreissena species have caused changes in water quality and biodiversity and have disrupted energy pathways which can have cascading effects on other trophic levels. Recently quagga mussels invaded Lake Powell, a reservoir located in the southwestern USA, creating the possibility of a trophic cascade that could alter energy flow in the reservoir and change the trophic niche structure of the fishes in the lake. However, due …

What's Going On With The Spine? Evaluation Of Alternative Sensorimotor Degeneration Post-Stroke, Sravani Mannuru, Sarvani Uppati, Kelsey Baker Dec 2020

What's Going On With The Spine? Evaluation Of Alternative Sensorimotor Degeneration Post-Stroke, Sravani Mannuru, Sarvani Uppati, Kelsey Baker

MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. Previous research has shown a strong correlation between damage to the corticospinal tract (CST) and motor deficits in post-stroke patients. However, recent research suggests that other sensorimotor pathways (rubrospinal tract, medial reticulospinal tract) are damaged after stroke and may also contribute to motor dysfunction. Here, we will review current research suggesting that alternate sensorimotor pathways are involved in post-stroke motor dysfunction and outline possible avenues for future research.

The unusual acoustical properties of a particular landscape architecture feature of Academy Park on the Purdue University campus have been the subject of speculation for years. The feature, known informally as the “clapping circle,” consists of sixty-six concentric rings of stone tiles. When someone claps while standing at the middle of the circle, they hear a high-pitched squeak immediately afterwards. Experiments were conducted by the Purdue student chapters of the Acoustical Society of America and the Audio Engineering Society to characterize this effect. The response to a clap played from an omnidirectional speaker placed at the center of the circle …

The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin Dec 2020

The Future Of The German-Jewish Past: Memory And The Question Of Antisemitism, Gideon Reuveni, Diana Franklin

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Germany’s acceptance of its direct responsibility for the Holocaust has strengthened its relationship with Israel and has led to a deep commitment to combat antisemitism and rebuild Jewish life in Germany. As we draw close to a time when there will be no more firsthand experience of the horrors of the Holocaust, there is great concern about what will happen when German responsibility turns into history. Will the present taboo against open antisemitism be lifted as collective memory fades? There are alarming signs of the rise of the far right, which includes blatantly antisemitic elements, already visible in public discourse. …
