Usefulness Of Cadaver Embalming Solutions As Alternatives To Formalin In Veterinary Surgical Training, Je-Sung Moon, Sung Min Nam, Sang-Soep Nahm, Hun-Young Yoon
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Veterinary surgical training with live animals is inevitable for skill development. However, using a live animal is impractical owing to cost and ethical standards. Thus, well-embalmed life-like cadavers should be used. Thisstudy aimed to assess the usefulness of cadaver embalming in surgical training using two alternatives to formalin solution (FS)—Thiel’s solution (TS) and saturated salt solution (SS). Four groups, each comprising three Beagles, used FS, TS, and SS for cadaver embalming, and one group served as control. Skin elasticity, range of motion (ROM), tissue color, and life-like conditions during surgical procedures were evaluated at one-month intervals for a total of …

The aim of this study is to determine the influence of EM stimulations on macro and micro element concentrations in the blood, to determine if changes in ion concentrations depends on their basal values and to determine the usefulness of this kind of stimulation in the maintenance of the blood macro and micro element levels in cows. 17 cows were included in the experimental group (affected by a unique EM stimulation protocol of three weeks duration) and 9 cows were included in the control group. Significantly higher (P<0.01) concentrations of Ca, P, Na and Cu and lower (P<0.05) concentrations of Zn were found in the experimental group after EM stimulation. Dynamic changes of macro and micro element concentrations were inversely proportional to their basalvalue before the beginning of the experiment which means that animals with lower basal concentrations had greater changes of value during stimulation. Dynamicchanges of Ca, P, Mg, Fe, K and Cu were more notable in the experimental group that was exposed to EM stimulation compared to the control group. However, dynamic changes of Na and Zn concentrations were identical in the experimental and control groups. Exposure of cows to EM stimulation had a positive effect at Ca and P concentrations and improved calcaemia and phosphatemia in all the exposed animals.

Pacific leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are critically endangered, and declines have been documented at multiple nesting sites throughout the Pacific. The western Pacific leatherback forages in temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, and about 38–57% of summer-nesting females from the largest remaining nesting population in Papua Barat (Indonesia) migrate to distant foraging grounds off the U.S. West Coast, including neritic waters off central California. In this study, we examined the trend in leatherback abundance off central California from 28 years of aerial survey data from coast-wide and adaptive fine-scale surveys. We used a Bayesian hierarchical analysis framework, including …

Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The changing fire regime of landscapes across the Mojave Desert has prompted considerable research on its effects on plant community recovery, but it has not been widely studied what effects wildfire may have on native pollinators and the vital ecosystem services they provide. Ecological changes from increased wildfire severity from invasive exotic annual grasses will likely continue influencing pollinator habitats and floral resources. Understanding the effects that wildfires have on pollinators is valuable to make decisions as to whether active management and restoration activities are required to conserve ecologically vital pollinator functions. The intention of this thesis was to examine …
Arranged Marriage, Partner Traits And Parental Investment: Examining The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis In Humans, Annemarie M. Hasnain
Arranged Marriage, Partner Traits And Parental Investment: Examining The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis In Humans, Annemarie M. Hasnain
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Both sexes choose mates based on qualities that will enhance offspring viability and quality. In some cases individuals are forced to reproduce with less desirable mates which has been shown to result in lower quality offspring. The Reproductive Compensation Hypothesis (RCH) predicts that parents who mate under constraint will increase their reproductive effort and investment in offspring to compensate for lowered offspring viability. Evidence for the RCH has been found in several animal species; however it has not been examined in humans. One possible type of mate choice constraint in humans is that of arranged marriage in which parents or …

Regulation Of In Vitro And In Vivo Hepatic Stellate Cell Activation By The Ayrl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Shivakumar Rayavara Veerabhadraiah
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Liver fibrosis is a pathological condition characterized by the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix material by activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). We recently reported that activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a ligand-activated transcription factor, with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) increases HSC activation in vitro and in mouse models of experimental liver fibrosis. The goal of this project was to determine the mechanism by which AhR activation impacts HSC activation and the subsequent development of liver fibrosis. It is possible that HSCs are direct cellular targets for TCDD. Alternatively, TCDD could increase HSC activation indirectly by exacerbating hepatocyte damage …

© 2020, The Author(s). Metabolism and signaling of cytokinins was first established in plants, followed by cytokinin discoveries in all kingdoms of life. However, understanding of their role in mammalian cells is still scarce. Kinetin is a cytokinin that mitigates the effects of oxidative stress in mammalian cells. The effective concentrations of exogenously applied kinetin in invoking various cellular responses are not well standardized. Likewise, the metabolism of kinetin and its cellular targets within the mammalian cells are still not well studied. Applying vitality tests as well as comet assays under normal and hyper-oxidative states, our analysis suggests that kinetin …

Accurate and cost-effective PCR based sex identification is important in animal production because it gives producers the ability to determine the sex of embryos prior to transfer, saving time and money. The most efficient PCR sex identification assays work by using a single primer pair to amplify a specific target region located on the Y-chromosome and a second, separate target region on the X-chromosome.
This thesis reports the design of two novel assays. The first assay was designed to target the Zinc finger CCCH-type, RNA binding motif and serine/arginine rich 2 (ZRSR2) gene found on the X-chromosome and its Y-chromosome …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Transportation is one of the most significant contributing sectors to emissions and consequently air pollution in the United States. Many state and private fleet agencies have announced their visions of zero-emission fleet programs. Adopting alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) is a viable option for achieving this objective. AFVs offer lower emissions along with low operating and maintenance costs, and higher fuel economy. The advancement of technologies has provided several AFV options, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), electric vehicles (EV), compressed natural gas vehicles (CNGV), and liquefied petroleum gas vehicles (LPGV). The main challenges in adopting AFVs are the high purchasing …

The Layered Frames Of Performed Tabletop: Actual-Play Podcasts And The Laminations Of Media, Brendan Decicio
Theses and Dissertations
Despite their sudden growth in popularity, the role-playing actual-play podcasts have either been ignored or grouped with the genre of audio drama in prior scholarly works. Examination using frame analysis shows, however, that these podcasts are distinct in their engagement of the audience on multiple, simultaneous levels; levels which correspond with well-known media genres such as Documentary, Fiction, and Game Play. Each frame has its own layer of identities, conduct, and avenue for appealing to audiences just as these genres have their own distinct appeals. Through the combinations of these frames, familiar tropes and techniques such as Short-Form Improv and …

Purpose: Pubertal suppression is standard of care for early pubertal transgender youth to prevent the development of undesired and distressing secondary sex characteristics incongruent with gender identity. Preliminary evidence suggests pubertal suppression improves mental health functioning. Given the widespread changes in brain and cognition that occur during puberty, a critical question is whether this treatment impacts neurodevelopment.
Methods: A Delphi consensus procedure engaged 24 international experts in neurodevelopment, gender development, puberty/adolescence, neuroendocrinology, and statistics/psychometrics to identify priority research methodologies to address the empirical question: is pubertal suppression treatment associated with real-world neurocognitive sequelae? Recommended study approaches reaching 80% consensus were …

Effects Of Temporal Variation On Ambient Light In Northwest Arkansas, Ashlyn Anderson
Effects Of Temporal Variation On Ambient Light In Northwest Arkansas, Ashlyn Anderson
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
An animal’s life success is determined solely by its fitness, which makes choosing a mate one of its most important life decisions. Natural selection plays a big part in an animal’s phenotype, but so does sexual selection. Even though females are usually thought to be the choosier sex, in many species or seasons males are also choosy. Male mate preference is an understudied topic compared to female mate preference and therefore, even less is known about the outcomes of a male’s prior mating experience’s influence on future mating experiences. Therefore, I dove deeper into this topic with the highly studied …

1, 2, Or 3 In A Hat? How A Human-Agent Team’S Composition Affects Trust And Cooperation, Dan Manh Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
Modern advances in technology have enabled a collaborative relationship between man and machine. Many industries have adopted these human-agent teams, yet human perceptions about technology may prevent them from adopting a teammate mentality when interacting with agents. Although many studies have researched the issue, few have studied how the human to agent ratio within a team influences how the person intends to interact with their agent team members. Grounded in the theory of planned behavior (Azjen, 1985), this study elucidates how a team’s composition affects the trust of human team members in human-agent teams and their subsequent intentions to work …
Real-Time Action Classification Using Intermediate Skeletal Pose Estimation, Kleanthis Zisis Tegos
Real-Time Action Classification Using Intermediate Skeletal Pose Estimation, Kleanthis Zisis Tegos
Theses and Dissertations
The topic of Human Action Classification has attracted significant interest these past years, which can be attributed to the advancements in deep learning methodologies. Its applications range from robotics to surveillance and automated video categorization, as well as in the healthcare industry. The literature, however, has primarily focused on offline action classification, without significant attention being given to the constraints of an online real-time classifier. Using an intermediate skeletal representation of humans, while convoluted, provides a scalable means of tackling the action classification problem. This project discusses the existing literature, and adapts two of the state-of-the-art approaches for real-time analysis. …

Developing A Rabies Prevention Program Based On Rabies Exposure Data In Nebraska, Jill Oatman
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Eighty-nine percent of Nebraska’s towns are considered rural, with populations of less than 3,000 people and with many towns having less than 1,000 residents. Rural areas consist of crop ground, livestock facilities and regions inhabited by wildlife. Nebraska has two large urban cities, Lincoln and Omaha. Animal and human health in these communities can be greatly impacted by infectious diseases that are transmitted between animals and humans, known as zoonotic diseases. One zoonotic disease of great concern is rabies. Zoonotic diseases not only impact the health of animals and humans, but the social well-being of communities and result in increased …
Systems Genetics And Systems Biology Analysis Of Paraquat Effects In Bxd Recombinant Inbred Mice, Carolina Del Valle Torres Rojas
Systems Genetics And Systems Biology Analysis Of Paraquat Effects In Bxd Recombinant Inbred Mice, Carolina Del Valle Torres Rojas
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Paraquat (PQ) is a chemical herbicide that is used in many countries including the United States. It is also highly acutely toxic to humans and has been used as a means of suicide. As PQ is applied mainly in agricultural settings, it moves to soil and well water. Chronic low dose exposure via drinking water may have adverse effects on humans, including increased risk for sporadic Parkinson’s disease (sPD). The etiology of sPD is unclear and the most accepted hypothesis states it is the result of the interaction between environmental factors and genetic susceptibility. Increasing evidence led us to infer …

Correlation Between Air Quality Index And Traffic Volume Using Internet Of Things (Iot), Omar Sayah Alruwaili
Theses and Dissertations
In highly populated world areas, such as metropolises, hazardous air pollution has been linked to the presence of damaging climate and health issues, which are becoming increasingly common. Indeed, a major problem facing urban areas today is air pollution. Gas emissions from vehicles can be seen as the most important source of this kind of pollution. Pollutant gases emitted as parts of car exhaust consist of chemicals such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), as well as particulate matter (PM). In some places in the world, non-governmental and foreign corporations have also …
Cellular Attachment On Poly(Lactic Acid) For Use In Tissue Engineering, Stephen R. Hunter
Cellular Attachment On Poly(Lactic Acid) For Use In Tissue Engineering, Stephen R. Hunter
Masters Theses
Tissue engineering is a promising new method for organ regeneration. This method can be used to repair damaged tissue, or possibly replace a fully functional organ. In summary, a biopsy is taken from a donor, isolated, then grown onto a framework resembling an organ. Once grown; it is then transplanted into the patient. Over time, the body will degrade the scaffold, leaving the organ or tissue in its place. As this scaffold is present in the body for an extended time; factors like biocompatibility, toxicity, immunogenicity, and structural stability must be researched.
Several polymers have already been researched for use …

Toward A Valid And Reliable Measure Of Play: The Dimensions Of Play Framework, Aubrey Henriksen
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
While it is established that play is important for development, researchers do not have a measure that examines both play type and complexity. Existing measures are limited to examining play type without complexity, complexity of a specific play type, or ethnographic measures. Based on a combination of scales in the literature, I developed the Dimensions of Play Framework as a tool for observational quantitative measurement of play in children's museums. The purpose of this initial study was to investigate interrater reliability using a time-sampling method. Video tapes of 140 children interacting with either a simple or elaborate version of a …
