The bovine lactoferricin L6 (RRWQWR) has been previously identified as a novel cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) that is able to efficiently internalize into human cells. L6 interacts with quantum dots (QDs) noncovalently to generate stable L6/QD complexes that enter cells by endocytosis. In this study, we demonstrate a modified L6 (HL6; CHHHHHRRWQWRHHHHHC), in which short polyhistidine peptides are introduced into both flanks of L6, has enhanced cell-penetrating ability in human bronchoalveolar carcinoma A549 cells. The mechanism of cellular uptake of HL6/QD complexes is primarily direct membrane translocation rather than endocytosis. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), but not pyrenebutyrate (PB), ethanol, oleic acid, or …

My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing
Articles
Nobel-prize winning poet Seamus Heaney is celebrated for his rich verses recalling his home in the Northern Irish countryside of County Derry. Yet while the imaginative links to nature in his poetry have already been critically explored, little attention has been paid so far to his rendering of local food and foodways. From ploughing, digging potatoes and butter-churning to picking blackberries, Heaney sketches not only the everyday activities of mid-20th century rural Ireland, but also the social dynamics of community and identity and the socio-cultural symbiosis embedded in those practices. Larger questions of love, life and death also infiltrate the …

With the continuous development of nanomaterials, how to improve the conversion efficiency of DSSCs has been the focus of scholars. Nano-TiO2 material is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of 3.2eV. It exhibits good performance in dye adsorption, charge separation, electron transport, etc., and has good chemical stability and strong acid and alkali resistance. Therefore, it was always the material of choice for the preparation of photoanodes. In this paper, different thicknesses of TiO2 NRs barrier layers were prepared on FTO substrates by solvothermal method and two-step spin coating method, and their electrochemical and photoelectric properties were tested by …

A Noncoherent Governance: Tinkering With Stones In The Old City Of Acre, Caitlin M. Davis
A Noncoherent Governance: Tinkering With Stones In The Old City Of Acre, Caitlin M. Davis
Anthropology ETDs
This dissertation recounts a series of episodes in the architectural conservation of the Old City of Acre in Israel. It studies the stones and mortars, residents and inspectors, papers and computers involved in the conservation of historic buildings, highlighting the moments in which the technical details of architectural conservation entangle themselves with the administrative techniques of government authorities. I describe architectural conservation as a tentative process, one that requires the coordination of various actants into precarious associations. Here, description is important. The pages that follow experiment with an anthropological practice that writes against conclusion. This is an anthropology that refuses …

Variance And Reliability In Special Educator Observation Rubrics, Angela R. Crawford, Evelyn S. Johnson, Laura A. Moylan, Yuzhu Zheng
Early and Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study describes the development and initial psychometric evaluation of the Recognizing Effective Special Education Teachers (RESET) observation instrument. The study uses generalizability theory to compare two versions of a rubric, one with general descriptors of performance levels and one with item-specific descriptors of performance levels, for evaluating special education teacher implementation of explicit instruction. Eight raters (four for each version of the rubric) viewed and scored videos of explicit instruction in intervention settings. The data from each rubric were analyzed with a four facet, crossed, mixed-model design to estimate the variance components and reliability indices. Results show lower unwanted …

A Man In The Middle: Giuseppe De Nittis In Paris In The 1870s, Robert Jensen

This essay charts de Nittis’ meteoric rise to commercial success via the commercial gallery of Adolphe Goupil as well as his public successes at the Paris Salon. De Nittis carefully negotiated his position between the Salon work and what best sold through Goupil while retaining close contacts with some of the key Impressionist artists. A fascinating connection, in particular, exists between Edgar Degas’ famous Place de la Concorde: Count Lepic and his daughters and de Nittis’ own Place de la Concorde, which was painted at nearly the same moment and was directly engaged with Degas’s picture. The central claim of …

Classical And Quantum Conductivity In Β-Ga2o3, David C. Look, Kevin D. Leedy
Classical And Quantum Conductivity In Β-Ga2o3, David C. Look, Kevin D. Leedy
Physics Faculty Publications
The conductivity σ, quantum-based magnetoconductivity Δσ = σ(B) − σ(0), and Hall coefficient RH (= µH/σ) of degenerate, homoepitaxial, (010) Si-doped β-Ga2O3, have been measured over a temperature range T = 9–320 K and magnetic field range B = 0–10 kG. With ten atoms in the unit cell, the normal-mode phonon structure of β-Ga2O3 is very complex, with optical-phonon energies ranging from kTpo ~ 20–100 meV. For heavily doped samples, the phonon spectrum is further modified by doping disorder. We explore the possibility of developing a single function Tpo(T) that can be incorporated into both quantum and classical scattering theory …

Habitat destruction is the single greatest anthropogenic threat to biodiversity. Decades of research on this issue have led to the accumulation of hundreds of data sets comparing species assemblages in larger, intact, habitats to smaller, more fragmented, habitats. Despite this, little synthesis or consensus has been achieved, primarily because of non-standardized sampling methodology and analyses of notoriously scale-dependent response variables (i.e., species richness). To be able to compare and contrast the results of habitat fragmentation on species’ assemblages, it is necessary to have the underlying data on species abundances and sampling intensity, so that standardization can be achieved. To accomplish …

Background: Breast cancer remains a major health problem in the world. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with very poor prognosis. Up to now, the mechanism behind TNBC's activity is still unclear and no candidate drug target has been identified. Thus, it is of critical importance to elucidate the pathways in TNBC and identify the relevant biomarkers. Recent studies showed that ganglioside D3 synthase (GD3s) played a very important role in development of cancers. However, the physiological functions and associated pathways of GD3s in TNBC are still unclear.

Conclusions: In summary, these results suggest that GD3s …
Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin
Approximation Dynamics, Ethan Akin
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We describe the approximation of a continuous dynamical system on a p.l. manifold or Cantor set by a tractable system. A system is tractable when it has a finite number of chain components and, with respect to a given full background measure, almost every point is generic for one of a finite number of ergodic invariant measures. The approximations we use are non-degenerate simplicial dynamical systems for p.l. manifolds and shift-like dynamical systems for Cantor Sets.

Thirty Years Later: The Pentecostal Church In Romania And Religious Freedom In The Post-Communist Era, Dragoș Ștefănică
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The aim of the present paper is to provide a brief presentation of the evolution of religious freedom in Romania since the 1989 Revolution from the perspective of a Pentecostal believer. To better understand what this event meant for this denomination, first the situation of the Pentecostal movement in the interwar and communist times will be presented, and then survey the changes brought by the fall of the communist regime and how religious freedom evolved in the past three decades.

Outcome In Patients With Myasthenia Gravis Managed With Or Without Thymectomy, Safia Bano, Muhammad Athar Javed, Waqas Arshad
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic acquired autoimmune disorder in which autoantibodies are produced against acetylcholine receptors present on neuromuscular junction. It results in neuromuscular transmission blockage hence muscle weakness occurs. Thymus gland is considered as having crucial role in development of these antibodies. Screening patients for thymoma and removal of the thymus gland with surgery has an important aspect in management of disease.
