Enhanced Gesture Sensing Using Battery-Less Wearable Motion Trackers, Huy Vu Tran Dec 2019

Enhanced Gesture Sensing Using Battery-Less Wearable Motion Trackers, Huy Vu Tran

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Wearable devices are gaining in popularity, but are presently used primarily for productivity-related functions (such as calling people or discreetly receiving notifications) or for physiological sensing. However, wearable devices are still not widely used for a wider set of sensing-based applications, even though their potential is enormous. Wearable devices can enable a variety of novel applications. For example, wrist-worn and/or finger-worn devices could be viable controllers for real-time AR/VR games and applications, and can be used for real-time gestural tracking to support rehabilitative patient therapy or training of sports personnel. There are, however, a key set of impediments towards realizing …

External Influences And Internal Construction Of Self, Serra Raven Shuford Dec 2019

External Influences And Internal Construction Of Self, Serra Raven Shuford

All Theses

Throughout our lives, a plethora of influences in some way or another, determine who we are by constructing our identities and the perception of who we are. Understanding this is important as we attempt to discover self, amongst our experiences. My work investigates the way that cultural, familial, environmental, social, and other external factors affect the internal construction of self. The accumulation of imposed influences leaves little room for self which calls to question, “who are we if not for our predisposed circumstances?”. Through the collective use of textures, patterns, and colors found in fabric, the sculptures in this work …

Exploring Yoga As A Leisure-Stress Coping Strategy Among Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Molly Richardson Dec 2019

Exploring Yoga As A Leisure-Stress Coping Strategy Among Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Molly Richardson

All Theses

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at a greater risk for experiencing stress, particularly stress associated with negative interpersonal relations, than individuals without disabilities. Research has found that individuals with IDD often use maladaptive coping strategies to manage stress. The purpose of this study was to explore whether participation in a seven-and-a-half week yoga intervention served as a leisure-stress coping strategy for adults with IDD. Using a multi-method research design, six participants completed pre- and post-Lifestress Inventory assessments, and nine participants completed post-intervention semi-structured interviews focused on yoga and coping. Qualitative results indicated that yoga served as an …

The Processing Of Binder Jet Multi-Material 3d Printing To Improve Upon Material Properties, Sara Mohammed Damas

All Theses

Additive manufacturing methods are becoming more prominent in the world of design and manufacturing due to their reduction of material waste versus traditional machining methods such as milling. As their demand rises, a need to improve their methodologies and produce higher quality products arises. The technology to 3D print has been in around since the 1970’s, and thanks to Scott Crump as of 1989, it is possible to 3D print in layers to obtain a solid component. In today’s present time, we now can multi-material 3D print. However, even though we have the technology for multi-material 3D printing, standards in …

Agent-Based Resilient Transportation Infrastructure With Surrogate Adaptive Networks, Andre Aaron Apostol Dec 2019

Agent-Based Resilient Transportation Infrastructure With Surrogate Adaptive Networks, Andre Aaron Apostol

All Theses

Connected autonomous intelligent agents (AIA) with enhanced decision making through machine learning can improve intersection performance and resilience for the transportation infrastructure. An agent is an autonomous decision maker whose decision making is determined internally but may be altered by interactions with the environment or other agents. Implementing agent-based modeling techniques to advance communication for more appropriate decision making will provide great benefits to autonomous vehicle technology.

A new algorithm is proposed to improve the decision-making process of autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic signals, specifically at city like intersections. This is completed by understanding vehicle to vehicle (V2V), vehicle to …

Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford Dec 2019

Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford

All Theses

Golfers have steadily increased demands for putting green quality, including distance and smoothness. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass has emerged as a viable C4 turfgrass to be used by golf courses as putting greens or fairways and tees. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass exhibits multiple benefits over other C4 and C3 turfgrasses, but an undesirable trait is seedhead production.

Three studies were conducted at Clemson University from April 2018 to November 2019 to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass’ turf quality (TQ), lateral recovery and seedhead production. Study 1 tested PGRs in a field setting on the TQ, seedhead production and …

Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio Dec 2019

Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio

All Theses

Tendon injury can occur from activity-induced overuse, complete laceration or aging-related degeneration and these injuries commonly fail to wound heal without clinical treatment. Moreover, activity-induced overuse accounts for approximately half of all sports injuries and has highest occurrence rates in athletes playing football, baseball and basketball. Current non invasive technique to rest and ice the damaged tissue in combination with either oral NSAIDS or corticosteroid injections has shown little promise with only ~60% of cases regaining functionality of the tendon (Paterno et al., 2013).

From the literature, this seems to be caused by a combination of poorly perfused tissue along …
