Creative Authors And Their Messages: A Collection Of Criticisms, Vicki Taylor Dec 2019

Creative Authors And Their Messages: A Collection Of Criticisms, Vicki Taylor

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

Oppression is evident m every society: from the beginning of time, First in England and then America, the defilement of people based on race, gender, and birthplace found its way from the streets of the country to the pages of many works of literature. These core issues in the plot of narrative gave rise to literary criticism. The fragile psyche of immigrants is outlined in Charles Brockden Browns Edgar Huntly, the defilement of women is greatly shown through the writing of Edna's search for identity in Kate Chopin's The Awakening, and the lingering effects of slavery are recorded in the …

Inhibition Of Serine, Glycine, One-Carbon Metabolism Reduces Proinflammatory Response, Ashlynn Mccall

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

Acute lung injury affects around 200,000 critically ill patients annually, with a mortality rate near 33%. With a lack of targeted therapies, it is vital to discover and understand the fundamental cellular processes that drive macrophage inflammation. In the field of macrophage immunometabolism, it is accepted that macrophages upregulating glycolysis indicates a role in proinflammatory processes, however, there is a lack of knowledge surrounding the intermediate pathways in glycolysis. This study examined the effects of serine, glycine, one-carbon metabolism inhibition on LPS-induced inflammation in bone marrow-derived macrophages. We show that the enzymatic expression of PHGDH and PSATl is unaffected when …

Japanese Paper And Paper Conservation, Kei Takahashi

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

Washi is a Japanese handmade paper which has very long traditions. There are many types of washi in Japan but there are three main types of paper which are the kozo, mitsumata, and gampi paper. Kozo paper is made of mulberry fibers and the most well-known and has the highest production in Japan. Mitsumata and Gampi paper are made of tree of daphne fibers but the process of these two papers are different and Gampi paper is the highest quality of paper compared to the other two types papers. Before washi was created, the handmade paper originally came from …

How Ecommerce Is On The Rise, Kayla Smith

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

In this paper I will observe how the development of new technologies (that have seen extreme changes) has led to a lot of changes in the way products are manufactured, services are offered, and money is transacted and the products delivered. Due to changes in consumer demands in the market, technology has been manipulated over the years, giving rise to multinational billion dollar organizations that keep adapting overtime to keep up with the rapidly changing consumer needs. In particular, with communication, the rise of the mobile phone network and the Internet have particularly revolutionized the way business is done entirely. …

Small Group Learning Is Associated With Reduced Salivary Cortisol And Testosterone In Undergraduate Students, Kristin Snopkowski, Kathryn Demps, Ross Griffiths, Karen S. Fulk, Scott May, Kimberly Neagle, Kayla Downs, Michaela Eugster, Tessa Amend

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Small group learning activities have been shown to improve student academic performance and educational outcomes. Yet, we have an imperfect understanding of the mechanisms by which this occurs. Group learning may mediate student stress by placing learning in a context where students have both social support and greater control over their learning. We hypothesize that one of the methods by which small group activities improve learning is by mitigating student stress. To test this, we collected physiological measures of stress and self-reported perceived stress from 26 students in two undergraduate classes. Salivary cortisol and testosterone were measured within students across …

Knight, Joanne M. Bennett, Brian Suarez, Victor Parra-Tabla

ETSU Faculty Works

Species interactions are known to be key in driving patterns of biodiversity across the globe. Plant-plant interactions through heterospecific pollen (HP) transfer by their shared pollinators is common and has consequences for plant reproductive success and floral evolution, and thus has the potential to influence global patterns of biodiversity and plant community assembly. The literature on HP transfer is growing and it is therefore timely to review patterns and causes of among-species variation in HP receipt at a global scale, thus uncovering its potential contribution to global patterns of biodiversity. Here we analyzed published data on 245 species distributed across …

The Kaiparowits Puebloans: Kayentan Or Virgin Branch Migrants?, Phil R. Geib Dec 2019

The Kaiparowits Puebloans: Kayentan Or Virgin Branch Migrants?, Phil R. Geib

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

More than 50 years ago archaeologists identified a high-density of small Puebloan habitations on the Kaiparowits Plateau in southern Utah. Analysis of pottery from these habitations by James Gunnerson and Florence Lister resulted in conflicting interpretations of cultural affiliation. Gunnerson argued for a Virgin affiliation whereas Lister argued for a Kayentan affiliation. Lister’s interpretation triumphed and the Puebloan occupation of the Kaiparowits was attributed to a migration of Kayenta people from the south during the late Pueblo II period. A review of architectural and artifactual evidence fails to support a Kayentan migration. An expansion of Puebloan groups from the west …

Feeling It: Toward Style As Culturally Structured Intuition, Keith Rhodes Dec 2019

Feeling It: Toward Style As Culturally Structured Intuition, Keith Rhodes

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I have been moved to write a serious article about teaching style not because I have great and earth-shaking method to impart, but in some sense because I do not, even after years of study—including the small bit of empirical research at the core of this article. Style, as it turns out, remains as difficult, complex, and ultimately intuitive as most of the rest of writing. I hope, ultimately, to encourage writing teachers to focus more attention on style, basing approaches on what we already know rather than waiting and hoping for some flawless system to materialize. Indeed, by the …

It’S Everyone’S Job To #Endccstigma, Eric Heiser

Instructional Leadership Abstracts

I have watched with great enthusiasm the past few months as I’ve seen more and more movement behind the #EndCCStigma movement, both on Twitter and in real-life form. Frankly, this has been many years in the making and is long overdue. The fact is, we have allowed society to perpetuate this stigma and it is high time we stop allowing them to do so. Community colleges touch the lives of so many individuals. Even those who never become our students are often touched by their local community college. Whether a parent, brother, sister, cousin, or even friend attended, the touch …

Towards Location Free Movement Recognition With Channel State Information, Chunhai Feng

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Channel state information based movement recognition has gathered immense attention over recent years. Different from traditional systems which usually require wearable sensors or surveillance cameras, many existing works achieved desirable performance with only wireless signals in various applications, including healthcare, security and Internet of Things, with different machine learning algorithms. However, it still remains many challenges to be solved. Particularly, the location dependent nature of channel state information is one of the most significant challenges remaining. Firstly, many previous researchers deploy and evaluate their systems with employing machine learning or deep neural networks. Because of the aforementioned challenge, the models …

Case 1 A previously healthy 16-year-old man was initially evaluated in the emergency department for traumatic injuries following a high-impact motor vehicle accident. He was a bodybuilder who used anabolic steroids. He denied abdominal or back pain. His physical examination was signifcant for a palpable liver edge. Routine laboratory tests including liver function tests were unremarkable. A computed tomographic (CT) scan showed an unsuspected mass in the right lobe of the liver. A subsequent triple-phase magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the abdomen showed a 15.1 × 15.0 × 10.8 cm mass in the right hepatic lobe that exhibited heterogeneous …

Automated Testing Of A Commercial Cyber-Physical System Development Tool Chain, Shafiul Azam Chowdhury Dec 2019

Automated Testing Of A Commercial Cyber-Physical System Development Tool Chain, Shafiul Azam Chowdhury

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Rigorous validation of commercial cyber-physical system (CPS) tool chains (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) through automated testing is of utmost importance since tool-chain generated artifacts are often deployed in safety-critical embedded hardware. Although automated differential testing through random program generation and equivalence modulo input (EMI)-based mutation has been well studied for procedural compiler testing, applying these techniques for Simulink, the widely used commercial CPS development tool pose unique challenges, which we explore in this series of work for the very first time. To better understand real-world CPS modeling and to automatically generate Simulink models similar to those crafted by engineers and researchers, we …

Deep Representation Learning For Clustering And Domain Adaptation, Mohsen Kheirandishfard Dec 2019

Deep Representation Learning For Clustering And Domain Adaptation, Mohsen Kheirandishfard

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Representation learning is a fundamental task in the area of machine learning which can significantly influence the performance of the algorithms used in various applications. The main goal of this task is to capture the relationships between the input data and learn feature representations that contain the most useful information of the original data. Such representations can be further leveraged in many machine learning applications such as clustering, natural language analysis, recommender systems, etc. In this dissertation, we first present a theoretical framework for solving a broad class of non-convex optimization problems. The proposed method is applicable to various tasks …

Distinct Aspects Of The Early Environment Contribute To Associative Memory, Cued Attention, And Memory-Guided Attention: Implications For Academic Achievement, Maya L. Rosen, Andrew N. Meltzoff, Margaret A. Sheridan, Katie A. Mclaughlin

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Childhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with numerous aspects of cognitive development and disparities in academic achievement. The specific environmental factors that contribute to these disparities remain poorly understood. We used observational methods to characterize three aspects of the early environment that may contribute to SES-related differences in cognitive development: violence exposure, cognitive stimulation, and quality of the physical environment. We evaluated the associations of these environmental characteristics with associative memory, cued attention, and memory-guided attention in a sample of 101 children aged 60–75 months. We further investigated whether these specific cognitive abilities mediated the association between SES and academic …

Play Smart Youth Heart Screening Program Reduces False-Positive Rates For Screening Electrocardiograms, James G Beckerman, M Wang, Lydia Hibsch, Nancy Davis

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Play Smart Youth Heart Screening is a free community-based electrocardiogram (ECG) screening program sponsored by Providence Heart Institute in Portland, Oregon. Play Smart goal is to identify youths who may need further follow-up and treatment of undiagnosed, asymptomatic heart disease such as cardiac arrest. For many youths, sudden cardiac arrest is their first symptom of heart disease. Play Smart has sought to systematically improve ECG screening accuracy (specificity) by consistently adopting the most recent ECG interpretation guidelines. More accurate screening (less false-positive screens) enables Play Smart to target recommendations for follow-up treatment only to those individuals with true-positive screening results.

The ∼500 Myr A2IV star HR 1645 has one of the most significant low-amplitude accelerations of nearby early-type stars measured from a comparison of the Hipparcos and Gaia astrometric catalogs. This signal is consistent with either a stellar companion with a moderate mass ratio (q ∼ 0.5) on a short period (P < 1 yr), or a substellar companion at a separation wide enough to be resolved with ground-based high-contrast imaging instruments; long-period equal-mass ratio stellar companions that are also consistent with the measured acceleration are excluded with previous imaging observations. The small but significant amplitude of the acceleration made HR 1645 a promising candidate for targeted searches for brown dwarf and planetary-mass companions around nearby, young stars. In this paper we explore the origin of the astrometric acceleration by modeling the signal induced by a wide-orbit M8 companion discovered with the Gemini Planet Imager, as well as the effects of an inner short-period spectroscopic companion discovered a century ago but not since followed up. We present the first constraints on the orbit of the inner companion, and demonstrate that it is a plausible cause of the astrometric acceleration. This result demonstrates the importance of vetting of targets with measured astrometric acceleration for short-period stellar companions prior to conducting targeted direct imaging surveys for wide-orbit substellar companions.

Legal Fictions And Foreign Frictions: An Argument For A Functional Interpretation Of Jesner V Arab Bank For Transnational Corporations Dec 2019

Legal Fictions And Foreign Frictions: An Argument For A Functional Interpretation Of Jesner V Arab Bank For Transnational Corporations

University of Chicago Law Review

The Alien Tort Statute (ATS) allows noncitizens to bring civil actions in US federal courts for a select class of particularly egregious violations of international law. Human rights activists have pushed the boundaries of the ATS in recent decades, and the Supreme Court has responded by establishing several limiting rules for ATS jurisdiction. Most recently, in April 2018, the Supreme Court ruled in Jesner v Arab Bank that foreign corporations cannot be defendants in ATS suits. Following Jesner, plaintiffs in ongoing ATS suits have dropped key corporate defendants from their complaints. This Comment argues that courts and litigants should pause …

Exculpatory Evidence Pre-Plea Without Extending Brady, Brian Sanders Dec 2019

Exculpatory Evidence Pre-Plea Without Extending Brady, Brian Sanders

University of Chicago Law Review

Innocent defendants sometimes plead guilty. This is a problem. Some suggest fixing this problem with a constitutional requirement that prosecutors disclose exculpatory evidence before a defendant pleads guilty. A circuit split has thus developed concerning whether Brady, which requires disclosure of exculpatory evidence, extends to the pre-plea context. The Supreme Court’s jurisprudence, however, likely bars a constitutional requirement for pre-plea disclosure of exculpatory evidence. Faced with this exigency, this Comment argues that contract law should form the legal basis for pre-plea disclosure. Specifically, the contract doctrine of constructive fraud provides a suitable remedy. While big boy clauses, which defeat constructive …
