In this research presentation we present and explore open educational practices and resources in the context of learning spaces, broadly defined to include lecture theatres, classrooms, social areas, and online environments. Specifically, we examine the ways in which the use of space in campus-based institutions has been opened up through the evolution of learning theories and technologies (Brown & Long, 2006), and how the design and use of physical learning spaces has been remediated through the evolving use of blended and online learning in campus-based programmes.

This chapter focuses on the representation of the Catalan photographer, Francesc Boix, who was interned in a Nazi concentration camp, in the generically hybrid grief memoir, El jardín de la memoria, by the contemporary Spanish author, Lea Vélez. This chapter analyses Vélez’s text as a form of affiliative postmemory which revisits the underrepresented legacy of the Spanish concentration camp experience.

This collection of essays explores the concept of patrimoine, a French word used to denote cultural heritage, traditional customs and practices – the Gaelic equivalent is dúchas – and the extent to which it impacts on France and Ireland. Borrowing from disciplines as varied as sociology, cultural theory, literature, marketing, theology, history, musicology and business, the contributors to the volume unearth interesting manifestations of how patrimoine resonates across cultural divides and bestows uniqueness and specificity on countries and societies, sometimes in a subliminal manner.

Although Frederick May (1911–85) is seen as holding an important position in the history of twentieth-century composition in Ireland, writing about May has been sporadic. There exists no serious biographical study to date and most of the commentary on the music has been superficial and frequently misleading. Guo Zurong, born in 1928, is a distinguished and respected Chinese composer and educator. He has composed more than two hundred works during his career, including 16 symphonies, 13 concertos, 41 piano solos, and 110 art songs. This dissertation focuses on his early art songs, aiming to discover his compositional process and style. His biography, for the first time in English, will be presented in chapter 2. AbstractThe purpose of this dissertation is to identify gaps in existing literature and records of Cajun folksongs, and to validate art song arrangements of this repertoire as a significant contribution to the canon of Cajun music. Though it continues to evolve and thrive as a commercial music genre, Cajun folk music is underrepresented in notated form. Transcription is vital to the preservation of folk music; however, previously published collections of these folksongs offer incomplete analysis. This dissertation explores the one-issue Fire!! created, edited, and published by Wallace Thurman, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Bennett, Aaron Douglas, and Richard Bruce Nugent in 1926 - during the height of the Harlem Renaissance. By giving a close examination of the short stories, plays, poems, editorials, and illustrations included in the journal, I examine the editorial and aesthetic choices of the younger generation of artists and their collective effort to broaden the perspectives and representations of African Americans in art and in culture. Watching highly-skilled experts in the midst of improvised performance can be a source of mystification and wonder. Understanding this mystery in more detail, especially for music, is a major motivation for my dissertation. Moreover, while there are multiple avenues through which one could explore improvisation, I will primarily utilize the tools of embodied cognitive science to help better understand it in general and bebop jazz improvisation in particular. This dissertation analyzes the ways voice, sound, and hearing are represented in John Krasinskis 2018 film, A Quiet Place. Using a theory of close reading inspired by the works of Michael Leff and informed by a Deaf epistemology animated by the works of sound artist Christine Sun Kim, this dissertation uses A Quiet Place as a touchstone from which to explore issues of sound within the Deaf community. Kims art, demonstrations, and lectures provide focus for the three critical vibrational pulses of this project: Seeing Voice, Subjective Loudness, and (LISTEN). Mixed Methods Research To Improve Course Design For Preservice Teachers, Elizabeth S. White, Kyle E. Miller

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine student perceptions of a Child Development in Education course required for education majors. Participants (N = 167) completed pre and posttests assessing course content knowledge and a course satisfaction survey. Five students also participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses showed that course satisfaction differed by student major, with music education majors reporting lower satisfaction than elementary and special education majors. Further, while students believed they were more familiar with most course topics over time, their responses to course content questions did not consistently show learning gains. In this article, we argue that critical communication scholars have largely overlooked the study of politeness as a constitutive component of identity, culture, and power. We offer a critical-performative framework for critical scholars interested in studying politeness as a political, discursive, and embodied act. To develop this agenda, we first outline Brown and Levinson’s postpositivist theory of politeness. We then review three challenges to their use of intentionality, Grice’s cooperative principle, and Goffman’s concept of face. These challenges are located in interactional, traditional critical, and discursive understandings of politeness (respectively). Next, we show how a performative understanding of politeness both …

My initial interest in researching college evangelical ministries spurred from my own experience with a ministry on my campus, The Salt Company. As I dug into their media presence, I became fascinated with how The Salt Company creates and performs their social identity as a larger community. The current research over evangelical ministries on college campuses focuses primarily on students involved within the ministry, but there has been little to no research of how these evangelical ministries and their social power affect students who are not members of the ministries. Goals:

The primary goal is to introduce students to the concept, experience, and application of the listening stick activity within the context of an undergraduate listening course. Students participate in a group listening stick activity that cultivates experiences of first person attention, focus, and awareness of self and others’ feelings and needs for the purpose of self-discovery and building small group cohesiveness. As a secondary goal, students learn how to apply the listening stick activity to interpersonal and small group situations in school, work, social, and spiritual settings for a variety of purposes including relationship building, problem-solving and decision-making.

Waiting For A Queer Change: Gender Identity Through Performative Waiting And The Boudoir Chronotope In Call Me By Your Name, Gregory R. Clarke

This thesis analyses André Aciman’s novel, Call Me By Your Name (2007), in light of its portrayal of a nineteen-eighties gay relationship that is not entirely defined by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Rather than the abjection associated with illness and death, I focus on the narrative’s evocation of pleasure and love for its protagonists, Elio and Oliver, who do not identify as exclusively gay. My argument focuses on Elio exemplifying and undermining Roland Barthes’ trope of the lover-who-waits as historically ‘feminine’ in A Lover’s Discourse. In doing so, I demonstrate how Barthes’s work prefigures Judith Butler’s gender performativity theory.

This research project titled Dancing Elements explores choreographic conversations between the body and natural elements, specifically water on film. I question how natural elements when viewed in relation to the dancing body, can begin to be seen as a dancing entity. This research is divided between scholarship and the creation of a new dance film, su dansi which is Turkish for ‘water dance.’ su dansi is a collaborative and explorative outcome that plays with the dancing body and water through the art form of film. We have a First Amendment right to criticize the government. But this freedom does not translate into a right to criticize one’s boss even if, as for millions of Americans, one’s boss happens to be a government employer. Public employee speech doctrine has long established wide latitude for public employers to supervise their workers. Employees must show at the threshold that their speech was on a matter of public concern and not an internal workplace matter.
