The Many Worlds Of American Communism, Joshua James Morris

This dissertation examines the American Communist movement between 1928 and 1957 by dividing up sources into worlds of activity, such as political work, labor organizing, and community organizing, and examining the multiple forms of engagement and experience by individuals’ part of a social movement. My research demonstrates that a social movement such as advocating radical political change in the United States can take on a wide variety of forms and can mean different things to different people based on where they came from, how they got involved in the movement and what they directly contributed to that movement. A Balm For The Times: The Origins And Evolution Of The Lost Cause In The South Carolina Low Country, 1830-1876, Andrew Patrick Davis

This study uses the concept of civil religion as a framework through which to examine the origins and early development of the Lost Cause in the South Carolina Low country. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as American colonists severed their ties with Great Britain and established an independent republic they likewise began forming a civil religion or a set of beliefs regarding the relationship between God and their incipient polity. Prophetic in nature the central tenets of this civil religion held that the Almighty proved actively involved in human history and that Americans represented an especially chosen …

: The study described here is part of a program of research investigating the application of a theoretical course design approach to pre-service teacher education. In this study the focus was to establish the effects of the design approach on pre-service teachers' mastery of pedagogical content knowledge about inclusive education. A quasi-experimental comparison group design was employed to establish the differential effects of two course designs, one based on the theoretical principle of embedded design derived from self-organization and the other based on classroom instruction and practicum-type experience. Community reconnection is dependent on the revitalization of the site chosen for this project. Revitalization strategies that rely on universal fascinations such as waterfront beauty, culture, history, food, and recreation, have the potential to provide people from the downtown San Fernando area with reasons to reconnect to the currently neglected project site. Access to unique and novel experiences in addition to options not available in the downtown area become invitations for personal and community enhancements that reconnect those living and working downtown to the revitalized site. Movement in architecture is an important aspect in creating a users experience. Dance, more specifically, is a way in which performers can express their own experiences and tell a story through the movement of their own bodies. This poses the question: in what ways can movement be implemented into the visitors experience? Architects such as Bernard Tschumi and Lawrence Halprin have used this concept of movement throughout their practice as a way to make a space flow and be the most comfortable for the user. Mixed Methods Research To Improve Course Design For Preservice Teachers, Elizabeth S. White, Kyle E. Miller
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine student perceptions of a Child Development in Education course required for education majors. Participants (N = 167) completed pre and posttests assessing course content knowledge and a course satisfaction survey. Five students also participated in semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analyses showed that course satisfaction differed by student major, with music education majors reporting lower satisfaction than elementary and special education majors. Further, while students believed they were more familiar with most course topics over time, their responses to course content questions did not consistently show learning gains. Teaching on topics of race and racism presents unique challenges to leaders in the university classroom setting. Despite an increasing number of instructors bringing a critical analysis of racial in/justice to their curriculum, many report challenges in teaching this content effectively. In this article, we address these challenges. We define common challenges in teaching racial content and articulate four principles for course planning around topics of race, racism, and racial justice. Then, drawing on a systematic review of scholarship examining issues of difference within a diverse range of disciplinary settings, we introduce a set of five pedagogical strategies, and supporting …

In this dissertation, which relies on philosophical inquiry, I use the case of rampage school gun violence to explore democratic education. Drawing a distinction between liberal-foundational democratic education, which aims to educate the individual on how to become an autonomous rational agent and pragmatic-antifoundational democratic education, which looks to help individuals to understand agency as shared, I argue antifoundational democratic education teaches individuals how to affect their environment and take responsibility for the renewal of their democratic society. Rather than allocating blame in the singular individual, antifoundational democracy teaches citizens how to share the blame, take responsibility for unacceptable violence, …

The research project, Kardía; A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing the Human Heart, examined how findings regarding the study of the heart influences and expands choreographic options for and approaches to dance as a work of art. The heart is a unique and intricate organ that helps sustain life within a human body. Examined for this project were the structure, actions and functions of the human heart. The program is named Building Leaders to Advance Science and Technology (BLAST) and is held each summer at three universities across the Commonwealth of Virginia: Old Dominion University, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The Sight And Site Of North Korea: Citizen Cartography's Rhetoric Of Resolution In The Satellite Imagery Of Labor Camps, Timothy Barney

In recent years, satellite mapping of North Korea, especially of its labor camps, has become important forms of evidence of human rights violations, used by transnational advocacy groups to lobby to Western governments for change. A phenomenon of “citizen cartography” has emerged where non-expert humanitarian actors use commercially available software like Google Earth to “infiltrate” the borders of North Korea. This essay interrogates the politics of seeing that takes place in creating the site and sight of North Korea by citizen cartographers, and historicizes these processes of seeing in Cold War and post-Cold War visual culture. I am bored. All around me are systems that perpetuate repetitive, reductive, and mundane modes of living. In an attempt to counter a culture obsessed with singular ways of existence and bite-sized perfection, I utilize moving mediums of video and performance to dive head first into a vast array of sloppy sincerity. The crisp, white-washed, analytical, and restrictive is loudly replaced with the empirical, haphazard, and instinctual. My intention is to create and encourage raw, performative-based work that is as multifaceted as unbridled life itself. The personal papers of Samuel Lowry Latimer, Jr. (1891-1975) include insurance, financial and tax records, various state-related pamphlets, photographs (mainly from The State newspaper) and postcards, and galley proofs of Three Scores and Ten, a history of The State written by Mr. Latimer (published in 1970 under the title The Story of The State and the Gonzales Brothers, see appendix #2).
