Background: The relationship between survivin and extranodal, nasal-type natural killer/T cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) was unclearly established yet. We here studied the potential prognostic roles of survivin and its implication as a target in ENKTCL therapy.
Methods: ENKTCL patients' peripheral blood were collected and tested by ELISA. ENKTCL cell lines were cultured with or without survivin inhibitor and tested by MTT and Flow cytometry. According to the gene expression profiles from the ArrayExpress Archive under E-TABM-702, survivin co-regulated cluster was established by Coupled Two-way Clustering Algorithm.
Results: Seventeen point six percent of total 17 ENKTCL patients were serum survivin-positive. These patients …
Anticompetitive Mergers In Labor Markets, Ioana Marinescu, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
Anticompetitive Mergers In Labor Markets, Ioana Marinescu, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
Indiana Law Journal
Mergers of competitors are conventionally challenged under the federal antitrust laws when they threaten to lessen competition in some product or service market in which the merging firms sell. In many of these cases the threat is that in concentrated markets—those with only a few sellers—the merger increases the likelihood of collusion or collusion-like behavior. The result will be that the post-merger firm will reduce the volume of sales in the affected market and prices will rise.
Mergers can also injure competition in markets in which the firms purchase, however. Although that principle is widely recognized, very few litigated cases …

Disparities In Colorectal Cancer: Measuring Spatial Accessibility, Screening, And Surveillance Outcomes In South Carolina, Michele J. Josey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation project is to add to the growing literature about the multi-faceted aspects of colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention and related disparities. We focused on the spatial distribution of facilities performing screening services to identify areas that underutilize colonoscopy screening. Next, we examined how the food and physical activity environment affects precursors of CRC by considering plausible pathways. Finally, we explored if access to health insurance reduced the racial disparity of receiving a timely surveillance colonoscopy after a CRC diagnosis.
We utilized the SC Ambulatory Surgery Discharge Database, an all-payer, population-based outpatient dataset with colonoscopy records from …

Exclusive Dining: Immigration And Restaurants In Chicago During The Era Of Chinese Exclusion, 1893-1933, Samuel C. King
Theses and Dissertations
The central aim of this project is to describe and explicate the process by which the status of Chinese restaurants in the United States underwent a dramatic and complete reversal in American consumer culture between the 1890s and the 1930s. In pursuit of this aim, this research demonstrates the connection that historically existed between restaurants, race, immigration, and foreign affairs during the Chinese Exclusion era. The movement of Chinese American restaurants and cuisine from the fringes to the center of white consumer culture was not a process dictated exclusively by the tastes of non-Chinese Americans or by the ability of …

Bioproduction Of Adipic Acid Using Engineered Pseudomonas Putida Kt2440 From Lignin-Derived Aromatics, Howard Willett
Bioproduction Of Adipic Acid Using Engineered Pseudomonas Putida Kt2440 From Lignin-Derived Aromatics, Howard Willett
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Current industrial synthesis of adipic acid is nonrenewable and depends on a carcinogenic starting material, benzene. Biocatalysis with an engineered microorganism could turn a renewable feedstock into a value-added chemical such as adipic acid. Here we engineered P. putida KT2440 to transform lignin-derived aromatics, coumarate and ferulate, into adipic acid. Lignin is a recalcitrant plant biopolymer burned for thermal energy. Conversion of lignin into a value-added chemical will improve the efficiency of lignocellulose processing plants. The best performing engineered KT2440 strain produces 2.52 mM adipate at a 9.5% (mole/mole) yield. This was achieved by the genetic insertion of non-natural biosynthetic …
Surrogate Formulation Based On Chemical Functional Group Analysis, Stuart Nates
Surrogate Formulation Based On Chemical Functional Group Analysis, Stuart Nates
Theses and Dissertations
Chemical kinetic characteristics of real fuels exhibit high-dimensional complexity due to the excessive number of molecules and molecular classes. As a method of projecting this high-dimensional complexity, which is pertinent to real fuels, to the low-dimensional description, either a surrogate approach or detailed experiments have been utilized, can guide the construction of chemical kinetic models for real fuel. Although the validity of the surrogate approach has been extensively demonstrated by a wide range of canonical experiments for whole fuel/air mixtures, the use of empirical fuel property indicators still worries whether or not the surrogate mixture truly captures the more complex …

In several regions of the Great Lakes, including Saginaw Bay, the proliferation of muck, decaying organics largely from aquatic plants such as Cladophora, has washed ashore, and is blamed for negatively affecting water quality and economic losses in the region. The current view is that excess nutrient loading into the system is a leading cause of this type of organic debris, though changes in food web dynamics may also be a contributing factor. Through an Integrated Assessment (IA) framework, we summarized the current state of knowledge on the causes and consequences of muck conditions at the Bay City State Recreation …

Common Worlds: Multi-Species Interactions At A Nature Based Preschool, Patty Born
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines interspecies relations between preschool-aged children at a suburban nature-based preschool and the animals who reside on a “working farm” located on its grounds. Typical early childhood environmental education lenses regard children as a)separate from nature, in need of returning; and b) the sole subjects of interest, whose re/actions are the ones most worthy of attention. This work attempts to challenge the discourse of a child/nature/animal split by acknowledging the ways in which children are already engaged with nature and animals in their own ways. It acknowledges the animals present in a nature-based preschool setting, asserting their agency …
Numerical Model To Predict Hemolysis And Transport In A Membrane-Based Microfluidic Device, Matthew D. Poskus
Numerical Model To Predict Hemolysis And Transport In A Membrane-Based Microfluidic Device, Matthew D. Poskus
Theses
Microfluidics has become an increasingly popular tool in the design and development of medical devices and artificial organs. Two promising applications of microfluidics are dialyzers and oxygenators. As a step toward portable dialysis treatment, continuous microfluidic dialysis may resolve many clinical issues with current dialysis treatments. Additionally, commercially available oxygenators exceed the blood volume of neonatal patients; low-volume microfluidic devices may safely deliver oxygen to these patients. Two critical parameters in the development of these devices is mechanical hemolysis and membrane diffusion, which are intricately connected to the geometry, flow rate, properties of the membrane, and each other. A computational …

Understanding soil systems is critical because they form the structural and nutritional foundation for plants and thus every terrestrial habitat and agricultural system. In this paper, we encourage increased use of mathematical models to drive forward understanding of interactions in soil ecological systems. We discuss several distinctive features of soil ecosystems and empirical studies of them. We explore some perceptions that have previously deterred more extensive use of models in soil ecology and some advances that have already been made using models to elucidate soil ecological interactions. We provide examples where mathematical models have been used to test the plausibility …
