Basic Local Alignment Sequencing Tool (BLAST) is a bioinformatics tool used for analyzing nucleotide sequences with regards to their similarity. BLAST can be found online on biological databases such as the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and other such repositories. The mechanism of BLAST allows the target sequence to be compared with other sequences to find regions of local similarity, and thus, a comparability quotient that determines the resemblance between the sequences is created. Due to the open-platform nature of the online databanks, several sequences can be accepted with little to no interjections regarding the quality of sequence submitted. …

Development Of A Screening Method For Drugs Of Abuse By Direct Analysis Of Dried Urine Spots Coupled To Mass Spectrometry, Melanie Goldstein

Student Theses

Fast and easy screening procedures are essential in any forensic toxicology laboratory to differentiate negative samples from presumptive positive cases. Immunoassay techniques, such as enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT), are routinely employed as screening procedures. However, these techniques lack specificity (only differentiate group of drugs and not individual compounds) and it is difficult to add new compounds to the panel. Direct analysis of dried urine spots (DUS) by mass spectrometry (MS) offers a novel strategy to overcome these issues. DUS offer an improved storage alternative for biological samples, reducing costs and space requirements. In this work, an original method to …

Giving Four-Year-Old Children A "Voice" Within The Comprehensive Evaluation Of Quality Teaching Practices, Mistie M. Perry Aug 2019

Giving Four-Year-Old Children A "Voice" Within The Comprehensive Evaluation Of Quality Teaching Practices, Mistie M. Perry

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Educational research has largely focused on the correlation between governmental entities and classroom pedagogy as policymakers develop more comprehensive evaluation systems that raise the expectations of teacher quality. However, some researchers in the field of early childhood suggest the measurement of teacher quality is largely a “mismatch between informant-based, retroactive methods” (Downer, Booren, Lima, Luckner, & Pianta, 2010, p. 5) as developmentally appropriate measurements of early childhood quality that include the perceptions of the children are few. To examine the potential for researchers to consider the inclusion of children’s perceptions within evaluation systems, this study examines the following area of …

A limiting factor in understanding memory and language is often the availability of large numbers of stimuli to use and explore in experimental studies. In this study, we expand on three previous databases of concepts to over 4000 words including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and other parts of speech. Participants in the study were asked to provide lists of features for each concept presented (a semantic feature production task), which were combined with previous research in this area. These feature lists for each concept were then coded into their root word form and affixes (i.e., cat and s for cats) …

Applications Of Matching And Sorting Theory To Topics In Operations Management, Hewen Liu Aug 2019

Applications Of Matching And Sorting Theory To Topics In Operations Management, Hewen Liu

Open Access Dissertations

Matching and sorting theory are widely applied to operations management. Our analysis focuses on the matching in supply chains and sorting between projects and heterogeneous firms. In chapter 1, we investigate the decentralized allocation in pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) projects. We construct a theoretical framework of R&D competition between heterogeneous firms for differentiated drugs. The decentralized allocation features a mismatch between firms and R&D projects. Efficient outcome prescribes that each firm works on a separate R&D project with the more valuable R&D project being allocated to the established firm. The impact of transparency on efficiency is contingent on the …

Identifying The Genetic Architecture And Cellular Pathways Of Inherited Axonopathies, Dana Marie Bis-Brewer Aug 2019

Identifying The Genetic Architecture And Cellular Pathways Of Inherited Axonopathies, Dana Marie Bis-Brewer

Open Access Dissertations

Inherited axonopathies are a group of disorders unified by a common pathological mechanism: length-dependent axonal degeneration. Progressive axonal degeneration can lead to both Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2 (CMT2) and hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) depending on whether the peripheral or central nerves are affected, respectively. Historically, CMT2 and HSP are treated as distinct disorders, but their increasingly apparent clinical and genetic overlap challenges this classification. Either CMT2 or HSP can be caused by mutations within a single gene, yet what determines whether the peripheral or central nerves are affected in each patient remains unclear. Currently, ~30% of CMT2 cases and ~60% of …
