Sown And Unsown Floral Resources Both Support Bee Abundance, Pryce Johnson, Kenneth Elgersma, Ai Wen
Sown And Unsown Floral Resources Both Support Bee Abundance, Pryce Johnson, Kenneth Elgersma, Ai Wen
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
The recent decline in native bee populations across the Midwest has been linked to the drastic decrease of prairie habitats and pollinator floral resources. Since the agricultural revolution, grassland areas have been removed and replaced with row crops to meet the needs of expanding markets, including the production of ethanol. In response to the loss of these (and other) essential pollinators, the Conservation Reserve Program administered by the USDA initiated a pollinator habitat initiative called CP-42. Despite efforts to assess the program's success, there is still much that needs to be learned about restoring prairie habitats for bees. With CP-42, …

The Impact Of Soil Water Storage Capacity On Species-Specific Forb Establishment In Cp42 Fields, Ervina Tabakovic, Mark Sherrard, Kathleen Madsen, Allison Eagan
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
The loss of tallgrass prairie habitat has negatively impacted North American pollinator communities. To combat this loss, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) created Conservation Practice (CP) 42 to establish new pollinator habitat on the landscape. A two-year vegetation survey of CP42 sites in Iowa revealed high variability in overall quality (e.g., the ratio of sown forb-to-weed stems ranged from 9:1 to 1:9 across sites ). To examine potential causes of this variability, we assessed whether soil water storage capacity and corn suitability rating influence species-specific forb establishment in 35 surveyed CP42 fields. We estimated forb establishment for the seven most …
Assessing Cp - 42 Habitat Value For Bees Using The Floral Resource Index, Allison Eagan, Gabrielle Brown, Ai Wen
Assessing Cp - 42 Habitat Value For Bees Using The Floral Resource Index, Allison Eagan, Gabrielle Brown, Ai Wen
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Prairies once dominated 85% of Iowa. Sadly, that large portion of native prairie has been drastically reduced to 0.01% because of agricultural expansion. Habitat loss is one of the main contributors to the massive decline in the native bee population and its biodiversity. Native pollinators are essential to the ecosystem and play a large role in the pollination of row crops. The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), administered by the US Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency, launched the CP-42 program specifically as a Pollinator Habitat Initiative for forbs and grasses to be planted to increase pollinator habitat. However, no methods …
Effects Of Seed Mix And Surrounding Land Cover On Asclepias Syriaca Density In The Conservation Reserve Program's Pollinator Habitat Plantings, Kate Sinnott, Emma Simpson, Kathleen Madsen, Laura Jackson
Effects Of Seed Mix And Surrounding Land Cover On Asclepias Syriaca Density In The Conservation Reserve Program's Pollinator Habitat Plantings, Kate Sinnott, Emma Simpson, Kathleen Madsen, Laura Jackson
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
Due to the importance of Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed) to the eastern population of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), it is usually recommended for planting by federal conservation programs and state monarch recovery plans. However, A. syriaca has long been considered a weed, and is commonly found in roadsides and other disturbed landscapes where it has not been deliberately introduced. We wanted to determine if seeding A. syriaca is necessary for its establishment, or if milkweed populations in the surrounding landscape could spread into the plantings. In this study, we examined the density of A. syriaca in relation …
Local And Landscape Effects On Butterfly Abundance In Cp-42 Plantings, Emma Simpson, Kate Sinnott, Mark Myers
Local And Landscape Effects On Butterfly Abundance In Cp-42 Plantings, Emma Simpson, Kate Sinnott, Mark Myers
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium
The conversion of grassland habitats and intensification of row crop agriculture over the last several decades have driven declines in native pollinator populations throughout the Midwestern USA. These declines in native bee and butterfly abundance have negative ecosystem consequences due to these insects’ important ecological roles as pollinators of vegetable crops and other plant life. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Program Pollinator Habitat Initiative (CP-42) aims to conserve native pollinators by increasing pollinator habitat throughout the United States. However, since the program’s inception in 2011, there has been little monitoring of its effectiveness and no documentation of …
Sociocultural Variables That Predict Attrition From A Culturally Informed Group Therapy For Patients With Schizophrenia And Their Family Members, Jessica Maura
Open Access Dissertations
Individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders appear to be at high risk for dropout from treatment. Despite these findings, few studies have examined the potential impact that sociocultural variables may play in treatment dropout within this vulnerable population. Moreover, very little work has examined the function of these variables in group therapy (an approach that has increased in popularity and may be less susceptible to attrition) and even less work has examined how these variables function among racial/ethnic minorities, who appear to be at higher risk for treatment dropout than Whites. The current study aimed to expand upon the literature by …

Complexes were formed pairing FX, FHY, FH2Z, and FH3T (X = Cl, Br, I; Y = S, Se, Te; Z = P, As, Sb; T = Si, Ge, Sn) with NH3 in order to form an A⋯N noncovalent bond, where A refers to the central atom. Geometries, energetics, atomic charges, and spectroscopic characteristics of these complexes were evaluated via DFT calculations. In all cases, the A–F bond, which is located opposite the base and is responsible for the σ-hole on the A atom, elongates and its stretching frequency undergoes a shift to the red. This …
Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson
Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
In the two papers that comprise this thesis, I will be discussing Bone Spatulate Tools (BSTs) specifically those made of artiodactyl humeri found within Chaco Canyon, NM. These archaeological tool types permit the investigation of androcentric biases by way of legacy data acquired using the Chaco Research Archive (CRA). By redressing these archaeological biases, I hope to resuscitate an understudied tool type and highlight their function and importance in Chacoan toolkits. In chapter two, I investigate women and gendered activities by examining Humeri Spatulate Tools (HSTs) that are found at Chacoan great and small house sites. In this study, I …

- A key component of individual fitness is the ability to manage energy stores in response to variable resource availability, but because directly measuring energy budgets is difficult, daily energy management is rarely measured.
- Hummingbirds' energy management is relatively simple to model compared to other endotherms because they have high mass‐specific metabolic rates and store little fat.
- We determined which aspects of the hummingbird daily energy budget (i.e. thermoregulation, daytime activity costs, night‐time costs) change at the individual level in response to environmental variation.
- We found that daily energy expenditure varied threefold in two populations of broad‐billed hummingbirds (Cynanthus latirostris …

Protecting the seafood supply chain from species substitution is critical for economic, health, and conservation reasons. DNA-based methods represent an effective means to detect species substitution, but current methods can be time consuming or costly, and require specialized instruments and operators. Real-time PCR provides an alternative that can be performed quickly, and in some cases even on-site. The use of commercial kits reduces the expertise required by the operator and therefore increases accessibility to testing. This potentially increases the likelihood of adoption into the supply chain, but only if the kits are robust across multiple operators, instruments, and samples. In …

Aspen Bibliography
Climate change is impacting forested ecosystems worldwide, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere where warming has increased at a faster rate than the rest of the globe. As climate warms, trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is expected to become more successful in northern boreal forests because of its current presence in drier areas of North America. However, large-scale productivity decline of aspen has recently been documented throughout the United States and Canada as a result of drought and insect outbreaks. We used tree ring measurements (basal area increment (BAI) and stable carbon isotopes (δ 13C)) and remote sensing indices …
Life Is In The Blood, Alan L. Gillen, Jason Conrad
Life Is In The Blood, Alan L. Gillen, Jason Conrad
Faculty Publications and Presentations
It takes about 60 seconds for all the blood in your body to complete its journey. It travels from your heart to your extremities and returns, there and back again. Blood moves with the rapid current of the great arterial rivers and through the smallest capillary creeks. William Harvey first noticed circulation (1628) through the heart into arteries and veins; however, he could not see how they connected since he did not have a microscope. The man who first described this was Anton van Leeuwenhoek about 46 years later (1674). Then, J. J. Lister and Thomas Hodgkin described the rouleaux …

Vocabulary Instruction: Impacts Of Using A Science Notebook In A Dual Language Setting To Teach Science Vocabulary And Content, Manuel Andazola
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Language learners and students in general often struggle to close the achievement gap in monolingual schools because they lose academic content due to lack of vocabulary. To combat this issue, programs such as dual language schools have been introduced and have gained popularity due to their ability to help students keep learning academic content in their native language while becoming literate in the second language and also maintaining literacy in the content areas. Although these programs offer different instruction models and teaching techniques that teachers are implementing to improve science literacy, many teachers still struggle to find creative and effective …

Bacteria-Mediated Modification Of Insecticide Toxicity In The Yellow Fever Mosquito, Aedes Aegypti, Sara S. Scates, Scott T. O'Neal, Troy D. Anderson
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The incidence of mosquito-borne disease poses a significant threat to human and animal health throughout the world, with effective chemical control interventions limited by widespread insecticide resistance. Recent evidence suggests that gut bacteria of mosquitoes, known to be essential in nutritional homeostasis and pathogen defense, may also play a significant role in facilitating insecticide resistance. This study investigated the extent to which bacteria contribute to the general esterase and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450)-mediated detoxification of the insecticides propoxur and naled, as well as the insecticidal activity of these chemistries to the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Experiments conducted using …

Symbiodinium Reactive Oxygen Species (Ros) Production And Migration In The Octocorals Sympodium Sp. And Sarcothelia Sp., Weam S. El Rahmany
Honors Capstones
Climate change may be increasingly causing corals to bleach, as bleaching may be triggered by elevated temperatures and light. Corals bleach due to their symbionts’ overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This mechanism breaks down the syntrophic relationship between corals and symbionts, as the symbionts either migrate or die (Parrin et al., 2012). We primarily aimed to identify the relationship between stress, ROS production, and symbiont migration in the octocorals, Sympodium sp. and Sarcothelia sp. The experimental groups were stressed with 140 µmol photons sec-1m-2 for 4 hours (Table 1), while the control groups were kept in a culture tank …

Ocean acidification (OA) is the decline in seawater pH and saturation levels of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) minerals that has led to concerns for calcifying organisms such as corals, oysters and mussels because of the adverse effects of OA on their biomineralisation, shells and skeletons. A range of cellular biology, geochemistry and materials science approaches have been used to explore biomineralisation. These techniques have revealed that responses to seawater acidification can be highly variable among species, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely unresolved. To assess the impacts of global OA, researchers will need to apply a range of tools developed across …

A trauma-informed, multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach has shown improved outcomes for childbearing individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and their neonates. However, opioid agonist treatment (OAT) remains the first-line treatment option. Evidence-based practice should guide practitioners to utilize variety of interventions, particularly during this vulnerable and medically resource intensive time.
