The Pathophysiology Of Sepsis, Lauren Tomczak
The Pathophysiology Of Sepsis, Lauren Tomczak
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Sepsis occurs when an infection overwhelms the body and can lead to systemic organ dysfunction and death. The pathophysiology of sepsis is complex; disruption of the immune system causes unbalanced inflammatory and coagulation responses. Mortality rates of sepsis remain high, but continued research in the area of sepsis pathophysiology will likely lead to improved treatment modalities and better patient outcomes.

Teacher Stress And Coping: A Qualitative Case Study, Jennifer Ramsey Tolliver
Teacher Stress And Coping: A Qualitative Case Study, Jennifer Ramsey Tolliver
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
This study examines how stress affects the teacher participants in a rural school in Alabama and how those teachers cope with stress. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to explore the effects of teacher stress and the ways in which stress is dealt with through coping strategies. Thirteen teachers from one school in the district were invited to participate. Eight teachers of the thirteen agreed to be interviewed as part of the study, which included all the K–6 teachers (with the exception of fourth grade), the literacy coach, and the physical education teacher. The final finding is that …

Acute Exercise Intensity And Memory Function: Evaluation Of The Transient Hypofrontality Hypothesis, Paul D. Loprinzi, Sierra Day, Raymond Deming
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2019 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background and Objective: The transient hypofrontality hypothesis predicts that memory function will be impaired during high-intensity exercise, as a result of a need for metabolic and cognitive resources to be allocated toward sustaining movement, as opposed to performing a cognitive task. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate this transient hypofrontality hypothesis. Materials and Methods: Experiment 1 involved participants (n = 24; Mage = 21.9 years) completing four counterbalanced visits. Two visits evaluated working memory function, either at rest or during a high-intensity bout of acute exercise. The other two …

Glycolic Acid Utilization In Two Species Of Marine Bacteria, Erik S. Timsak
Glycolic Acid Utilization In Two Species Of Marine Bacteria, Erik S. Timsak
STAR Program Research Presentations
Interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton are crucial for the cycling of organic matter in marine environments. Around 50% of organic carbon taken up by marine bacteria is converted into inorganic carbon. The uptake of organic carbon by marine bacteria exuded from phytoplankton is a key factor in regulating the marine carbon cycle. One such molecule that is exuded by phytoplankton and then uptaken by marine bacteria is called glycolate - the anion of glycolic acid, a two caron molecule. Glycolate is exuded by phytoplankton during photorespiration and 10-50% of dissolved organic carbon in marine environments is comprised of glycolate. Additionally, …

Abundance And Community Composition Of Invasive Intertidal Watersipora On The San Francisco Bay Area Outer Coast, Kevin Myron, Meredtyh Duncan, Jaden Stone, C. Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Invasive species can lead to serious ecological changes. The San Francisco Bay area is one of the most invaded areas in the world due to the commercial shipping industry and recreational water vessels. While the intertidal is not widely invaded, the harbors and docks are. One exception to this is the invasive, colonial filter-feeding bryozoan Watersipora, which has been found at various rocky outer coast sites. Further investigation into how the sites are invaded by this organism and their impact on native species must be carried out. In this project, at four intertidal sites around the SF Bay outflow, we …
Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke
Language: A Bridge Or Barrier To Social Groups, Adina Corke
English (MA) Theses
Language acts as either a bridge or a barrier to social groups dependent upon the individual’s effective use of a social group’s language. The individual uses the language of the group in order to join the group and to be understood by the group. This suggests that language is behavioral in part and can be treated as a form of social norms which delegate who is a part of the group and who is not. By utilizing the language of the group effectively, an individual is able to join the group. This group language may be temporary, and the dynamics …

As science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classrooms in higher education transition from lecturing to active learning, the frequency of student interactions in class increases. Previous research documents a gender bias in participation, with women participating less than would be expected on the basis of their numeric proportions. In the present study, we asked which attributes of the learning environment contribute to decreased female participation: The abundance of in-class interactions, the diversity of interactions, the proportion of women in class, the instructor's gender, the class size, and whether the course targeted lower division (first and second year) or upper division …

Pathophysiology Of Ards, Brittney Nessle
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a progressive life-threatening disease process, having an occurrence of up to 200,000 cases annually in the United States (Schreiber, 2018). The definition of ARDS has changed throughout the years. In 2011, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine officially proposed the now adopted Berlin ARDS definition. The components within the definition include timing, chest radiography, the origin of edema, and severity of hypoxemia (Modrykamien & Gupta, 2015). There are over 50 different conditions that result in injury to the alveolar-capillary membrane that can lead to ARDS and produce several severe complications, including death. The …

Each spring and fall, millions of normally diurnal birds switch to migrating at night. Most of these are small songbirds (passerine) migrating long distances that need to alternate their migratory flights with refueling stopovers [1,2], which can account for up to 80% of the total migratory period [3]. After a long nocturnal flight, these birds face the contrasting needs to recover sleep and refill depleted energy stores, all while vulnerable to predation [4,5]. Here, we investigated how garden warblers at a Mediterranean stopover site modulate their sleep behavior in relation …

Radiation Oncology Meeting Abstracts
Purpose/Objective(s): Mounting evidence suggests that cardiac substructures are highly radiosensitive. However, these structures are not typically considered in treatment planning because they are not readily visualized on treatment planning CTs (TPCTs). This work sought to evaluate the potential of integrating soft tissue contrast provided by MR-guided radiation therapy for highly effective cardiac substructure sparing.
Materials/Methods: A retrospective evaluation was conducted of 10 patients (11 lesions) in the upper thoracic region treated at varied breathing states (4 end-exhalation, 6 end-inhalation, 1 free-breathing) on a 0.35T MR-linac. A hybrid MR/CT cardiac substructure segmentation atlas propagated 13 cardiac substructures to TPCTs. Contour modifications …

Social-Emotional Difference Given Disability, Grade, And School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports, Edith A. Hayles
Social-Emotional Difference Given Disability, Grade, And School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports, Edith A. Hayles
Dissertations
Students with disabilities as a group remain behind in academic achievement when compared to students without disabilities. Without the right school-based interventions, many students with disabilities will experience academic failure, disciplinary infractions, social isolation, self-doubt, school disengagement, and school dropout. Additionally, social-emotional intervention helps older students to improve executive functioning, develop self-regulation skills, and score better on achievement tests than the students not receiving any social-emotional programming. Moreover, students enrolled in schools that implement evidence-based educational interventions to facilitate students’ social-emotional competencies demonstrate more positive behaviors and social-emotional interactions. Students with social-emotional competencies have also described feeling safer and happier …
