Quantitative Proteomic Analysis Of Enhanced Cellular Effects Of Electrochemotherapy With Cisplatin In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Lakshya Mittal, Uma K. Aryal, Ignacio G. Camarillo, Rodrigo M. Ferreira, Raji Sundararajan
Quantitative Proteomic Analysis Of Enhanced Cellular Effects Of Electrochemotherapy With Cisplatin In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Lakshya Mittal, Uma K. Aryal, Ignacio G. Camarillo, Rodrigo M. Ferreira, Raji Sundararajan
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Due to the lack of the three main receptors, triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is refractive to standard chemotherapy. Hence, alternate therapies are needed. TNBCs utilize glycolysis, which heightens their growth, proliferation, invasiveness, chemotherapeutic resistance and poor therapeutic response. This calls for novel therapeutic strategies to target these metabolic vulnerabilities present in TNBC. Electroporation-mediated chemotherapy, known as electrochemotherapy (ECT) is gaining momentum as an attractive alternative. However, its molecular mechanisms need better understanding. Towards this, label-free quantitative proteomics is utilized to gain insight into the anticancer mechanisms of ECT using electrical pulses (EP) and Cisplatin (CsP) on MDA-MB-231, human TNBC …

Repeated Transspinal Stimulation Decreases Soleus H-Reflex Excitability And Restores Spinal Inhibition In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Maria Knikou, Lynda M. Murray
Publications and Research
Transcutaneous spinal cord or transspinal stimulation over the thoracolumbar enlargement, the spinal location of motoneurons innervating leg muscles, modulates neural circuits engaged in the control of movement. The extent to which daily sessions (e.g. repeated) of transspinal stimulation affects soleus H-reflex excitability in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) remains largely unknown. In this study, we established the effects of repeated cathodal transspinal stimulation on soleus H-reflex excitability and spinal inhibition in individuals with and without chronic SCI. Ten SCI and 10 healthy control subjects received monophasic transspinal stimuli of 1-ms duration at 0.2 Hz at subthreshold and suprathreshold …

Human genomic data are large and complex, and require adequate infrastructure for secure storage and transfer. The NIH and The Wellcome Trust have funded multiple projects on genomic research, including the Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) initiative, and data are required to be deposited into the public domain. The European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) is a repository for sequence and genotype data where the data access is controlled by access committees. Access is determined by a formal application procedure for the purpose of secure storage and distribution, and must be in line with the informed consent of the study …

Abundance And Density Of A Columbian Black-Tailed Deer Population On An Urban Island, Robert P. Wingard, Paul R. Krausman, Ruth Milner
Western North American Naturalist
Methods to estimate abundance and density of Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) are limited. Regional wildlife managers are concerned that Columbian black-tailed deer on Whidbey Island, Washington, USA, exceed carrying capacity. Research on small islands in the Pacific Northwest reports high deer densities; however, these islands are smaller and less complex than Whidbey Island, and have fewer mortality sources. Our objective was to estimate the abundance and density of Columbian black-tailed deer on Whidbey Island by using road-based spotlight surveys in a distance sampling framework. We conducted spotlight surveys from 12 January 2015 to 23 January 2015 …

We report results on the electrochemical performance of flexible and binder-free α-Fe2O3/TiO2/carbon composite fiber anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The composite fibers were produced via centrifugal spinning and subsequent thermal processing. The fibers were prepared from a precursor solution containing PVP/iron (III) acetylacetonate/titanium (IV) butoxide/ethanol/acetic acid followed by oxidation at 200 °C in air and then carbonization at 550 °C under flowing argon. The morphology and structure of the composite fibers were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), …

Eastern Iowa Farmers’ Attitudes Towards The Incorporation Of Prairie Strips In Agricultural Fields And Economic Incentives, Ashley E. Becker, Robin A. Anderson, Amy C. Blair
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Extreme prairie habitat loss in Iowa due to the conversion of land to agricultural fields has resulted in negative consequences, including increased erosion, increased runoff, and decreased biodiversity. By incorporating prairie strips into agricultural fields, the aforementioned consequences can be minimized. This practice is the initiative of the Science-based Trials of Rowcrops Integrated with Prairie Strips (STRIPS) team at Iowa State University. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) offers economic incentives for incorporating conservation practices like prairie strips, yet prairie strip use is not widespread. To examine this issue, the attitudes of ten farmers towards employing these practices were measured …

Various types of algae play an important role in entire ecosystem and has potential role in the continuous search for biologically active compounds with miscellaneous activities, such as antioxidant, antiviral and antimicrobial. The objective of this study was to study the antimicrobial properties of two diverse seaweeds, Fucus vesiculosus and Porphyra dioca. Antimicrobial compounds from both seaweeds could find potential future use in medical or food industries. Water content analysis was performed on both seaweeds and it was determined that high water content around 80% was apparent for both seaweeds, with higher consistency of water content found for Porphyra dioica …
Effective Communication: A Vital Skill In Healthcare, Allison Crabtree
Effective Communication: A Vital Skill In Healthcare, Allison Crabtree
Presentations, Proceedings & Performances
Members of the healthcare team conduct thousands of patient and peer interactions over the course of a career. The call to action from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on Health Professions and Training stresses the importance of communication training for all members of the healthcare team. As with other healthcare procedures, communication skills can be learned and improved upon, but requires commitment and practice.
Given the wealth of evidence linking ineffective clinician-patient communication with increased malpractice risks, patient nonadherence, patient and clinician dissatisfaction, and poor patient health outcomes, the necessity of addressing communication skills deficits is of utmost importance

Mapping Of A Regulatory Site Of The Escherichia Coli Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylase, Jaina A. Bhayani, Benjamin L. Hill, Anisha Sharma, Alberto A. Iglesias, Kenneth W. Olsen, Miguel A. Ballicora
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The enzyme ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) controls the biosynthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in plants. It is regulated by various activators in different organisms according to their metabolic characteristics. In Escherichia coli, the major allosteric activator is fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (FBP). Other potent activator analogs include 1,6-hexanediol bisphosphate (HBP) and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP). Recently, a crystal structure with FBP bound was reported (PDB ID: 5L6S). However, it is possible that the FBP site found is not directly responsible for the activation of the enzyme. We hypothesized FBP activates by binding one of its phosphate groups to …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Attempts to assess behavioral responses of prey to predation risk are often confounded by depredation of prey. Moreover, the scale at which the response of prey is assessed has important implications for discovering how predation risk alters prey behavior. Herein, we assessed space use of wild Ring-necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in response to spatial and temporal variation in recreational hunting. We radio-marked pheasants and monitored space use at two spatial scales: short-term seasonal home range, and nightly resting locations. Additionally, we considered temporal variation in predation risk by monitoring space use prior to and during the pheasant hunting season. Although …

It has been hypothesized that the genetic control of forage traits, especially biomass, for grass plants growing as spaced-plants versus swards is different. Likewise, the genetic control of compatibility in grass–legume polyculture mixtures is assumed to be different than for forage production in a grass monoculture. However, these hypotheses are largely unvalidated, especially at the DNA level. This study used an intermediate wheatgrass mapping population to examine the effect of three competition environments (spaced-plants, polyculture, and monoculture) on classical quantitative genetic parameters and quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification for biomass, morphology, and forage nutritive value. Moderate to high heritable variation …

The Difference Between Maximum Profit And Maximum Production, Matthew Stockton
Cornhusker Economics
Nitrogen fertilizer (N) is commonly used as a production input to increase crop yields. It is included as one of the six Testing Ag Performance Solutions (UNL TAPS) program decision choices and contributes much to productivity as well as costs. Its use however is not without controversy. The over-application of N gets into the groundwater and nearby waterways becoming a pollutant. Excessive use does little or nothing to increase revenue but can inflate costs, thereby reducing profit. For these reasons and others, using the right amount of N has become a popular and important topic among those that use and/or …

"So Much For Darwin" - An Analysis Of Stormfront Discussions On Race, Dianne Dentice
Journal of Hate Studies
Even though people who actively participate in the white nationalist movement appear to be a relatively small percentage of the global population, it appears that racist and anti-Semitic attitudes continue to inform a new generation of white nationalists, many of whom populate discussion forums on Stormfront, online since 1995 and billed as the first Internet site in the hate genre. Membership in extremist groups and support for sites like Stormfront embody specific attitudes about race, the importance of the existence of biological races, intellectual superiority of whites, and justification for these beliefs that is sometimes framed with a religious perspective …
Lgbt Hate Crime: Promoting A Queer Agenda For Hate Crime Scholarship, James Pickles
Lgbt Hate Crime: Promoting A Queer Agenda For Hate Crime Scholarship, James Pickles
Journal of Hate Studies
Hate crime laws in England and Wales have emerged as a response from many decades of the criminal justice system overlooking the structural and institutional oppression faced by minorities. The murder of Stephen Lawrence highlighted the historic neglect and myopia of racist hate crime by criminal justice agencies. It also exposed the institutionalised racism within the police in addition to the historic neglect of minority groups (Macpherson, 1999). The publication of the inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence prompted a move to protect minority populations, which included the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Currently, Section 28 of …

A simple two-step, shaking-assisted polydopamine (PDA) coating technique was used to impart polypropylene (PP) mesh with antimicrobial properties. In this modified method, a relatively large concentration of dopamine (20 mg ml−1) was first used to create a stable PDA primer layer, while the second step utilized a significantly lower concentration of dopamine (2 mg ml−1) to promote the formation and deposition of large aggregates of PDA nanoparticles. Gentle shaking (70 rpm) was employed to increase the deposition of PDA nanoparticle aggregates and the formation of a thicker PDA coating with nano-scaled surface roughness (RMS = 110 …
Hate, Conflict, And Public Space: Stand Your Ground Laws And Potential Immunity For Hate Crimes, Jennifer N. Grimes
Hate, Conflict, And Public Space: Stand Your Ground Laws And Potential Immunity For Hate Crimes, Jennifer N. Grimes
Journal of Hate Studies
Statistics reveal that hate crimes in the United States have increased for the past two years in a row. From 2014 to 2016, the number of reported hate crimes has increased from 5,479 in 2014, to 5,850 in 2015, to 6,121 in 2016. These numbers do not include crimes that were not shared with the FBI by local law enforcement, or crimes that were not reported to the police at all. Early indicators reveal that the number of hate crimes in 2017 is expected to further continue this upward trend. The current social and political climate has raised much concern …
Correlates Of Desire For Children Among Black Women With And Without Hiv Infection, Yvonne Wesley
Correlates Of Desire For Children Among Black Women With And Without Hiv Infection, Yvonne Wesley
Dissertations
HIV infection poses a threat to women, children and society in general. Public health officials recommend that women with HIV avoid pregnancy, however these recommendations do not consider women's desire to bear children. Many authors suggest that desire for children, especially among Black women with HIV, is related to sense of self. This study examined whether there is a relationship among self-esteem, self-efficacy and desire for children, and compared these relationships between 52 Black women with HIV infection (mean age 34) and 46 Black women without HIV infection (mean age 31).

Gaining A Voice: A Study Of The Breastfeeding Experiences Of A Select Group Of Educated, Low-Income, Minority Women Supported By Peer Counselors, Maryanne Phyllis Locklin
Dissertations
This grounded theory study describes the experiences of a small select group of educated, low-income, culturally diverse women who were supported by peer counselors/breastfeeding advocates in their communities as they attempted to breastfeed. The study explores their issues and concerns. In-depth interview data from seventeen women (ten African-American and seven Latina) were analyzed, using constant comparative analysis. Findings from the study indicated that the perception of successful breastfeeding can have an empowering effect on women when support for their endeavors are gender--and culturally--appropriate, The five themes that emerged as primary descriptors of the experience were Making the Discovering, Seeking a …
A Comparison Of The Nursing Costs Associated With The Implementation Of The Mandated Nurse-To-Patient Ratios In California, Shelly C. Wells
A Comparison Of The Nursing Costs Associated With The Implementation Of The Mandated Nurse-To-Patient Ratios In California, Shelly C. Wells
Dissertations
Nurse executives are challenged to provide adequate nurse staffing to prevent adverse patient outcomes, promote patient satisfaction and enhance nurses' job satisfaction. Historically, nurse staffing strategies have involved the use of patient classification systems, the use of time studies to predict staffing numbers and the best guesses of the nurse administrators. Collective bargaining units moved to include staffing ceilings or nurse-to-patient ratios to address staffing needs in hospitals. In 1999, the state of California signed AB394 into law requiring the implementation of mandated minimum nurse-to-patient ratios. The California Department of Health Services estimated that the mandated nurse-to-patient ratios would cost …
