Thwarting Adversaries With Randomness And Irrationality, Abhinav Aggarwal Sep 2019

Thwarting Adversaries With Randomness And Irrationality, Abhinav Aggarwal

Computer Science ETDs

Distributed systems are ubiquitous today: from the Internet used by billions of people around the world to the small scale IoT devices. With this rapidly increasing need to perform computation at scales larger than ever before, comes the need to ensure resilience to adversarial failures so that these systems can continue to behave as intended even when some malicious tampering happens.

In this dissertation, we explore the power of randomness and the difficulty of rationally approximating the Golden Ratio to thwart adversarial behavior in two different problems in distributed computing: interactive communication and robust collaborative search. While randomness helps with …

Seattle University Law Review

Many of us rely on Google Translate and other Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI) online translation daily for personal or commercial use. These AI systems have become ubiquitous and are poised to revolutionize human communication across the globe. Promising increased fluency across cultures by breaking down linguistic barriers and promoting cross-cultural relationships in a way that many civilizations have historically sought and struggled to achieve, AI translation affords users the means to turn any text—from phrases to books—into cognizable expression. This Article discusses the burgeoning possibilities in the 3A Era (Advanced, Autonomous, AI systems) of AI online translation as …

Family Law's Coldest War: The Battle For Frozen Embryos And The Need For A Statutory White Flag, Mary Joy Dingler Sep 2019

Family Law's Coldest War: The Battle For Frozen Embryos And The Need For A Statutory White Flag, Mary Joy Dingler

Seattle University Law Review

Without concrete legislative guidance, courts are left to a variety of unsatisfactory methods of determining the disposition of frozen embryos in dissolutions and custody disputes. Beginning in 1992, courts have been issuing problematic rulings that are reached through the application of three approaches: (1) the balancing-interests test; (2) the contemporaneous mutual consent approach; and (3) the contractual approach. These approaches are examined in this Comment through the lens of selected cases and the largely inequitable outcomes for parties are critiqued. Courts even lament the lack of statutory guidance in deciding these disputes but are resigned to employing these largely flawed, …

Gully Erosion And Holocene-Anthropocene Environmental Change In Southern New England, Megan Hill Sep 2019

Gully Erosion And Holocene-Anthropocene Environmental Change In Southern New England, Megan Hill

Doctoral Dissertations

The proposed Anthropocene epoch provides a novel framework for recognizing, measuring, and interpreting human impacts to landscapes around the world. Important also, is the need to place human impacts in the context of how these landscapes have been behaving over recent geologic time (i.e., the Late Pleistocene and Holocene). In southern New England, widespread Anthropocene landscape changes occurred throughout 17th-20th century following European settlement. Markers of these Anthropocene landscape changes are visible in high-resolution topographic data in the form of historic land use features (e.g., stone walls and charcoal hearths), in gullies that dissect hillslopes, and in …

Remembrance Of A Wound: Ethical Mourning In The Works Of Ana Menéndez, Elías Miguel Muñoz, And Junot Díaz, José Aparicio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Remembrance of a Wound: Ethical Mourning in the Works of Ana Menéndez, Elías Miguel Muñoz, and Junot Díaz explores Latinx experiences of ethical mourning, an act akin to a scar remaining after a wound heals. This literary ethical mourning respects the memories of people and places no longer present. I define ethical mourning in Derridean terms and connect it to testimonio to illustrate how certain Cuban American and Dominican American characters, having lost their homeland through exile, immigration, and political turmoil, become practiced at mourning. For Derrida, ethical mourning employs poetic language to bear witness to a loss in such …

Law Faculty Scholarship

Ian Kerr, who passed away far too young in 2019, was an incisive scholar and a much treasured colleague. The wit that sparkled in his papers was matched only by his warmth toward his friends, of whom there were many. He and his many co-authors wrote with deep insight and an equally deep humanity about copyright, artificial intelligence, privacy, torts, and much much more.

Ian was also a valued contributor to the Jotwell Technology Law section. His reviews here display the same playful generosity that characterized everything else he did. In tribute to his memory, we are publishing a memorial …

Ketogenic Diets And Exercise Performance, Kristin L. Harvey, Lola Holcomb, Stephen C. Kolwicz Jr.

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

The ketogenic diet (KD) has gained a resurgence in popularity due to its purported reputation for fighting obesity. The KD has also acquired attention as an alternative and/or supplemental method for producing energy in the form of ketone bodies. Recent scientific evidence highlights the KD as a promising strategy to treat obesity, diabetes, and cardiac dysfunction. In addition, studies support ketone body supplements as a potential method to induce ketosis and supply sustainable fuel sources to promote exercise performance. Despite the acceptance in the mainstream media, the KD remains controversial in the medical and scientific communities. Research suggests that the …

Hominin And Animal Activities In The Microstratigraphic Record From Denisova Cave (Altai Mountains, Russia), Mike W. Morley, Paul Goldberg, Vladimir A. Uliyanov

KIP Articles

Denisova Cave in southern Siberia uniquely contains evidence of occupation by a recently discovered group of archaic hominins, the Denisovans, starting from the middle of the Middle Pleistocene. Artefacts, ancient DNA and a range of animal and plant remains have been recovered from the sedimentary deposits, along with a few fragmentary fossils of Denisovans, Neanderthals and a first-generation Neanderthal–Denisovan offspring. The deposits also contain microscopic traces of hominin and animal activities that can provide insights into the use of the cave over the last 300,000 years. Here we report the results of a micromorphological study of intact sediment blocks collected …

Development Of A Dna Mini-Barcoding Protocol Targeting Coi For The Identification Of Elasmobranch Species In Shark Cartilage Pills, Rowena J. Zahn, Anthony J. Silva, Rosalee S. Hellberg

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Many elasmobranch (shark and ray) species are considered threatened and their identification in processed products is important for conservation and authentication purposes. However, identification of elasmobranch species in shark cartilage pills has proven difficult using existing methodologies. The objective of this study was to develop a DNA mini-barcoding protocol using a ~130 bp region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene for species identification in shark cartilage pills. A total of 22 shark cartilage products underwent DNA extraction in duplicate using the DNeasy Blood and Tissue Kit (Qiagen). The effectiveness of a clean-up step following DNA extraction was …

Progressive resistance exercise training (PRT) is the most effective known intervention for combating aging skeletal muscle atrophy. However, the hypertrophic response to PRT is variable, and this may be due to muscle inflammation susceptibility. Metformin reduces inflammation, so we hypothesized that metformin would augment the muscle response to PRT in healthy women and men aged 65 and older. In a randomized, double-blind trial, participants received 1,700 mg/day metformin (N = 46) or placebo (N = 48) throughout the study, and all subjects performed 14 weeks of supervised PRT. Although responses to PRT varied, placebo gained more lean body …

Aspen Bibliography

  1. Ploidy level in plants may influence ecological functioning, demography and response to climate change. However, measuring ploidy level typically requires intensive cell or molecular methods.
  2. We map ploidy level variation in quaking aspen, a dominant North American tree species that can be diploid or triploid and that grows in spatially extensive clones. We identify the predictors and spatial scale of ploidy level variation using a combination of genetic and ground‐based and airborne remote sensing methods.
  3. We show that ground‐based leaf spectra and airborne canopy spectra can both classify aspen by ploidy level with a precision‐recall harmonic mean of 0.75–0.95 and …

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus (EBOV) is a highly lethal member of the Filoviridae family associated with human hemorrhagic disease. Despite being a sporadic disease, it caused a large outbreak in 2014-2016 in West Africa and another outbreak recently in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Several vaccine candidates are currently in preclinical and clinical studies but none are stable without cold chain storage.

METHODS: We used preservation by vaporization (PBV), a novel processing technology to heat-stabilize FiloRab1 (inactivated rabies-based Ebola vaccine), a candidate Ebola vaccine, and stored the vials at temperatures ranging from 4°C to 50°C for 10 days to 12 months. …

Gene Flow And Habitat Connectivity In A Native Rattlesnake Population On The Snake River Plain, Susan B. Parsons, Charles R. Peterson,, Christopher L. Jenkins, Marjorie D. Matocq

Western North American Naturalist

Sagebrush-steppe ecosystems are among the most threatened terrestrial ecosystems in North America, but the plants and animals living on the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), a federally protected research facility located in the sagebrush steppe of southeastern Idaho, do not suffer from many of the deleterious effects of habitat conversion and fragmentation that characterize more typical western landscapes. This research describes basic patterns of gene flow among a group of relatively undisturbed Great Basin rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus lutosus) hibernacula on the INL. Six polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were used to genotype 200 individuals from 10 hibernacula located at spatial …
