Photosynthetic Responses Of Turf‐Forming Red Macroalgae To High‐Co 2 Conditions, Sj Mccoy, A Santillán‐Sarmiento, Mt Brown, S Widdicombe, Gl Wheeler

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Seaweeds are important components of near-shore ecosystems as primary producers, foundation species, and biogeochemical engineers. Seaweed communities are likely to alter under predicted climate change scenarios. We tested the physiological responses of three perennial, turf-building, intertidal rhodophytes, Mastocarpus stellatus, Osmundea pinnatifida, and the calcified Ellisolandia elongata, to elevated pCO2 over 6 weeks. Responses varied between these three species. E. elongata was strongly affected by high pCO2, whereas non-calcified species were not. Elevated pCO2 did not induce consistent responses of photosynthesis and respiration across these three species. While baseline photophysiology differed significantly between species, we found few clear effects of elevated …

A Comparison Of The Nursing Costs Associated With The Implementation Of The Mandated Nurse-To-Patient Ratios In California, Shelly C. Wells Sep 2019

A Comparison Of The Nursing Costs Associated With The Implementation Of The Mandated Nurse-To-Patient Ratios In California, Shelly C. Wells

Dissertations

Nurse executives are challenged to provide adequate nurse staffing to prevent adverse patient outcomes, promote patient satisfaction and enhance nurses' job satisfaction. Historically, nurse staffing strategies have involved the use of patient classification systems, the use of time studies to predict staffing numbers and the best guesses of the nurse administrators. Collective bargaining units moved to include staffing ceilings or nurse-to-patient ratios to address staffing needs in hospitals. In 1999, the state of California signed AB394 into law requiring the implementation of mandated minimum nurse-to-patient ratios. The California Department of Health Services estimated that the mandated nurse-to-patient ratios would cost …

Establishing Climate Change Standing: A New Approach, Ian R. Curry Sep 2019

Establishing Climate Change Standing: A New Approach, Ian R. Curry

Pace Environmental Law Review

Climate change is one of the thorniest political, legal, and economic issues of our time. Therefore, a new legal approach to the issue is required. This Note proposes a streamlined approach for climate change standing, one that assumes injury in fact and causation for a class of discernible climate change harms. A streamlined approach will enable litigants harmed by climate change to seek redress in court, providing an outlet for redress where there has previously been none. Part II of this Note discusses the constitutional doctrine of standing. It begins with a summary of Article III and the logic behind …

Short Term Effects Of Hurricane Irma On The Phytoplankton Of Lake Louise, Georgia, Usa, Marque'l K. Gould, Adam J. Nienow, Anastasia V. F. Nienow, James A. Nienow

Georgia Journal of Science

Natural disturbances such as fires and severe storms can have profound impacts on the hydrology and ecology of inland waters, potentially altering the structure and function of the ecosystem for extended periods of time. Studies of the initial impacts are, however, uncommon. Here we report on the short-term impacts of Hurricane Irma in the structure of the phytoplankton association in Lake Louise, a small blackwater lake in southern Georgia. Irma hit the region on September 11, 2017, with tropical storm force winds. The event corresponded to a period during which we were conducting routine weekly monitoring of environmental conditions in …

Hepatitis Delta is severe and rapidly progressing form of viral hepatitis which leading to the liver cirrhosis and this infection is still an unresolved global health problem. The treatment of delta-virus infection is an unresolved problem. The application of the interferon preparations in case of delta-infection does not guarantee the efficacy of the treatment in the majority of patients, does not provide the stability of the elimination of the virus and gives a set of side-effects. New preparations with other mechanisms of the actions are now developing. These are nucleosides analogues and preparations with the specific mechanisms of action like …

Bronchial Asthma In Children: A Modern View Of The Problem, M.H. Mirrahimova, B.T. Khalmatova, T.A. Kuznetsova, G.A. Tashmatova

Central Asian Journal of Medicine

Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases. Statistical indicators of the prevalence of asthma are based mainly on data obtained from the treatment of patients in medical institutions. Therefore, information on the prevalence of bronchial asthma does not correspond to reality, as many patients for various reasons do not go to medical institutions, the parents of the child have a negative attitude towards diagnosing a chronic disease, and doctors often do not diagnose bronchial asthma, especially in the early stages of development and in cases of mild diseases. Thus, according to the Healthcare data of the Tashkent …

Wildlife In Parks And Communities: Institutionalizing Wildlife Conservation In Park Systems Through Municipal-Wide Planning Efforts, John J. Pipoly Iii, Lajuan Tucker, Patrick Fitzgerald, Scott Gilmore

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Wildlife populations are declining in the United States. As development increases, local parks and natural areas often become safe-havens for wildlife, including birds, pollinators and small mammals. Creeks, rights-of-way, roadsides and even private, commercial and public landscapes can create corridors for wildlife in urban and suburban areas, helping wildlife survive and minimizing human-wildlife conflicts. While many park departments and municipalities have some nature or wildlife programs at nature centers and public parks or manage some properties as natural areas, most do not integrate best practices for managing wildlife into park and recreation master plans or municipalwide sustainability, green infrastructure or …

Controversies resulting from genetic testing on skeletal remains of disputed stewardship raise important questions about obligations inherent on genetic researchers to assure ethical chain of custody. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate several proposed positions on whether such research should be published. Following jurisprudential standards for legitimate regulatory systems, we argue that responsible conduct of research requires reasonable attention to chain of custody, but cannot require guarantees, particularly in cases of ancient remains.

Timing Of Invasion By Africanized Bees Coincides With Local Extinction Of A Specialized Pollinator Of A Rare Poppy In Utah, Usa, Amber D. Tripodi, Vincent J. Tepedino, Zachary M. Portman

All PIRU Publications

The introduction of exotic species can have profound impacts on mutualisms between native species in invaded areas. However, determining whether a new invader has impacted native species depends on accurately reconstructing the invasion timing. The arrival of Africanized honey bees (AHB) in southern Utah at some point between 1994 and 2011 has recently been implicated in the local extinction of Perdita meconis, a native specialist pollinator of an endangered poppy, Arctomecon humilis. Although AHBs were purportedly first detected in southern Utah in 2008, their presence in nearby Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico by 1998–2001 suggests that they may …

We examined these data together with those of 21 Maya populations accounting for 647 present-day Maya individuals and 104 ancient Maya individuals. A demographic study based on the analysis of fertility and endogamy was carried out in two modern Maya populations to identify cultural factors that influence the mitochondrial haplogroup genetic diversity. Most present-day and ancient Maya populations show a distribution pattern of mitochondrial haplogroup frequencies A, C, …

A Toolkit For Managing The Ee (Environmental Education) And Esd (Education For Sustainable Development) Continuum, Attiyya Atkins, John J. Pipoly Iii

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) represent extremes of a global continuum. EE stresses awareness of process about, from and for the environment (Vrasidas 2007). ESD is defined as education empowering communities to acquire best management practices engendering human, social, economic and natural sustainability (UNESCO 2012) and developing their resilience despite environmental changes (Fastenrath et al. 2019). ESD is a critical component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (UN 2012), which grew from the Millennium Development Goals (UN 2000). Each park agency should develop research-based educational programs that address both EE and ESD. The ESD must promote …

Joint Analysis Of Self-Reported And Biological Measurements, Di Zheng Sep 2019

Joint Analysis Of Self-Reported And Biological Measurements, Di Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

Joint analysis of self-report and biomarker measurements provides new opportunities to understand and characterize human behaviors. Self-report measures are the most common way to assess human behavior, because they are quick, straightforward, and inexpensive. But they are easily limited by factors such as recall bias toward under-report. Thus, a wide variety of biological measurements have been developed to objectively assess human behaviors. However, the accuracy of biological measurement can also vary between studies, not just through chance, but also with changes in the study setting, the spectrum of disease, and definition of the target condition. Henceforth, self-report measures and biological …

Examining Feminist Consciousness In Lgbtq University Constituencies, John P. Cullen, Angela Clark-Taylor, Catherine Faurot, Alysha Alani, Catherine Cerulli Sep 2019

Examining Feminist Consciousness In Lgbtq University Constituencies, John P. Cullen, Angela Clark-Taylor, Catherine Faurot, Alysha Alani, Catherine Cerulli

New York Journal of Student Affairs

There is little data on the perception of LGBTQ constituencies toward feminism. We conducted focus groups on our campus and within the surrounding community on perspectives of LGBTQ students, university-employed gay men, community-based transgender individuals, and community-based gay men toward feminism. We analyzed findings using Bem’s gender schema and Ridgeway’s construct of individual, interactional, and institutional aspects of gender identity. Our results show the majority of our LGBTQ focus groups held positive views toward feminism, associating it with equality for all genders and social justice, with the exception of community-based gay men, who negatively associated feminism solely with women’s rights.

Hyperspectral Video Processing On Resource-Constrained Platforms, Honglei Li, Lei Pan, Eung Joo Lee, Zhu Li, Matthew J. Hoffman, Anthony Vodacek, Shuvra S. Bhattacharyya

Presentations and other scholarship

Hyperspectral imaging offers valuable spectral diversity for scene analysis and information extraction. However, exploiting this spectral diversity involves significant challenges in performing efficient video processing, especially in resource-constrained environments. These challenges arise due to the high memory and computational requirements for hyperspectral video processing applications. This paper presents system design methods using band subset selection to address this problem. These methods are applied to develop an adaptive video processing system targeted to an Android platform. The system dynamically adapts the selected bands to process based on constraints on real-time performance and video analysis accuracy. Experimental results provide quantitative insight into …

Genetic Variants Of Duffy And Hemoglobin S Genes In An Afrodescendent Population From Columbia, Diana C. Ortega, Heiber Cardenas, Guillermo Barreto

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Malaria is an endemic disease in a large part of Colombia, and the city of Buenaventura reports one of the highest malaria infection rates. Some genetic variants confer resistance to malaria, such as the heterozygote for hemoglobin S (HbS) and the homozygous variant FYBES/FYBES of the Duffy gene. The aim of this work was the molecular characterization of these genes in an afrodescendent population from the urban area of Buenaventura. A total of 819 individuals from a stratified random sampling in each of the 12 communities of this city were analysed. Molecular analysis was performed using PCR-RFLP, …
