Grief And Color In A. E. Coppard’S “The Princess Of Kingdom Gone”, Sydney Sterrett Jan 2019

Grief And Color In A. E. Coppard’S “The Princess Of Kingdom Gone”, Sydney Sterrett

Modernist Short Story Project

Only about a year after the horrors of World War I, England was doing its best to reestablish itself as a seat of cultural and artistic value. Many journals and magazines ran new poetry and stories that were meant to relive war time or move on from it, but nearly everything seemed to be colored by the sights that the surviving young men had seen in the trenches. In November of 1919, A. E. Coppard published a short story in the Voices of Poetry and Prose magazine—a magazine that was meant to help readers recover from the war through new, …

Hg Wells’ Anticipations : More “Perishable” Feminism, Kacey Sorenson

Modernist Short Story Project

In researching H.G. Wells’ evolving views on eugenics, race, anti-Semitism, and women, there was a noticeable absence of scholars referring to his last chapter of Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress upon Human Life and Thought. Regardless of why it has been overlooked, the aim of this study is to use the last chapter of Anticipations specifically to emphasize and confirm what feminist scholars have extracted as Wells’ view of women: what he proudly owned as feminism was dismissed by his contemporaries as “very perishable” (Kirchwey 308).

Analyzing The Hypervolume Of Plant Functional Traits In The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Rosina Garcia, David Schimel, Ryan Pavlick

STAR Program Research Presentations

Studying Earth’s biodiversity is important in understanding how ecosystems are changing in response to environmental stressors. Particularly, monitoring Earth via remote sensing can give us high-resolution data of plant functional traits, such as canopy height, leaf mass per area (LMA), and leaf nitrogen content, which provide insight into ecosystem changes. We mapped out remote sensing airborne data from the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in California and used R to create a hypervolume of the vegetated area. Hypervolumes are useful in creating a three-dimensional visualization of data to understand the relationships among different traits. We computed the three-dimensional space of the …

Method Development For Structural Assessment Of Nanolipoprotein Particles With And Without Cross-Linked Lipids, Emma J. Mullen, Wei He, Sean Gilmore, Matthias Frank, Matthew Coleman, Megan Shelby

STAR Program Research Presentations

Membrane proteins make up approximately 30% of the cellular proteome and account for over 60% of pharmaceutical targets.1 Determining the structures of this class of proteins is critical to our understanding of disease states and will advance rational drug design. But membrane proteins have limited solubility, rarely form large crystals that diffract well, and often misfold outside of a bilayer, hindering crystallographic studies.1 Nanolipoprotein particles (NLPs) have arisen as a platform to readily solubilize membrane proteins while mimicking a native lipid environment. NLPs consist of a discoidal phospholipid bilayer encircled by an apolipoprotein belt. In an effort to optimize and …

Comparing Regional Population Genetic Effects In Leptasterias Spp., Kristen N. Runge, Sarah Cohen

STAR Program Research Presentations

Leptasterias spp. is a species complex of six-rayed intertidal sea stars found along the northeast Pacific coast. A developmental mode of brooding their young, rather than broadcasting for planktonic development, limits dispersal away from the natal area, and may also result in local adaptation of populations. Local adaptation may lead to morphological and behavioral differences among populations. Previous studies on behavior in Leptasterias spp. have shown that activity levels may vary by population and region. Across three regions from California to Washington, differences were only observed between central California and more northern regions while northern California, Oregon, and Washington were …

The Unacceptable Rise: An Investigation Of School Shootings In The United States, Tracy Gulliford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined teachers' understanding of risk factors and characteristics of potential perpetrators of school shootings, as well as the steps to take when they are identified in students. Participants completed a survey that contained Likert-type scale items regarding self efficacy and open-ended questions regarding school violence experiences. A mixed methods analysis revealed three primary conclusions. First, teachers have high levels of self-efficacy regarding the importance of and ability to deal effectively with troubled students. This conclusion suggests that teachers do internalize the relevance of this issue to them. Second, this study revealed a gap in terms of the …

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In Breast Cancer And Beyond: Current Perspectives On Net Stimuli, Thrombosis And Metastasis, And Clinical Utility For Diagnosis And Treatment, Hunter T. Snoderly, Brian A. Boone, Margaret F. Bennewitz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Abstract

The formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), known as NETosis, was first observed as a novel immune response to bacterial infection, but has since been found to occur abnormally in a variety of other inflammatory disease states including cancer. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women. In breast cancer, NETosis has been linked to increased disease progression, metastasis, and complications such as venous thromboembolism. NET-targeted therapies have shown success in preclinical cancer models and may prove valuable clinical targets in slowing or halting tumor progression in breast cancer patients. We will briefly outline the mechanisms by …

Melatonin Prevents Osteoarthritis-Induced Cartilage Degradation Via Targeting Microrna-140, Yijian Zhang, Jun Lin, Xinfeng Zhou, Xi Chen, Angela Carley Chen, Bin Pi, Guoquing Pan, Ming Pei, Huilin Yang, Tao Liu, Fan He

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by the progressive destruction of articular cartilage, which is involved in the imbalance between extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and degradation. MicroRNA-140-5p (miR-140) is specifically expressed in cartilage and plays an important role in OA-induced matrix degradation. The aim of this study was to investigate (1) whether intra-articular injection of melatonin could ameliorate surgically induced OA in mice and (2) whether melatonin could regulate matrix-degrading enzymes at the posttranscriptional level by targeting miR-140. In an in vitro OA environment induced by interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), melatonin treatment improved cell proliferation of human chondrocytes, promoted the …

Emerging Insights Of Tumor Heterogeneity And Drug Resistance Mechanisms In Lung Cancer Targeted Therapy, Zuan-Fu Lim, Patrick C. Ma Jan 2019

Emerging Insights Of Tumor Heterogeneity And Drug Resistance Mechanisms In Lung Cancer Targeted Therapy, Zuan-Fu Lim, Patrick C. Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Abstract

The biggest hurdle to targeted cancer therapy is the inevitable emergence of drug resistance. Tumor cells employ different mechanisms to resist the targeting agent. Most commonly in EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer, secondary resistance mutations on the target kinase domain emerge to diminish the binding affinity of first- and second-generation inhibitors. Other alternative resistance mechanisms include activating complementary bypass pathways and phenotypic transformation. Sequential monotherapies promise to temporarily address the problem of acquired drug resistance, but evidently are limited by the tumor cells’ ability to adapt and evolve new resistance mechanisms to persist in the drug environment. Recent …

Cannabis And Psychosis Through The Lens Of Dsm-5, Nathan T. Pearson, James H. Berry

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Evidence for an association between cannabis and psychosis has been documented in literature in many forms including experimental studies, epidemiological data, and case series. The association has implications for psychotic outcomes ranging from mild to severe and occurring over minutes to years. Due to the huge variety of exposures and outcome measures reported, creating a coherent account of all the available information is difficult. A useful way to conceptualize these wide-ranging results is to consider the association between cannabis and psychosis as it occurs within the context of widely used DSM-5 diagnoses. In the present review we examine cannabis/psychosis associations …
