Seasonal Variation Of Contaminant Concentrations In Wastewater Treatment Works Effluents And River Waters., S. D.W. Comber, M. J. Gardner, B. Ellor

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Results are presented for 170 wastewater treatment works sites (20 per substance in influent, effluent and 36 per substance in river water upstream and downstream of the WwTW discharge) over a period of two years between 2015 and 2017; this comprises data for approximately 3000 samples for effluent and 6000 for river samples taken downstream of effluent discharges. Seasonal trends in contaminant concentrations for several substances are reported. Two clear patterns of seasonal variation are proposed over and above all of the variables associated with environmental data including process technology, dilution and geography. Firstly, variation of riverine concentrations caused by …

Interpreting Rural Students’ Stories Of Access To A Flagship University, Anna-Margaret Goldman Feb 2019

Interpreting Rural Students’ Stories Of Access To A Flagship University, Anna-Margaret Goldman

The Rural Educator

Access has been an ongoing issue for rural students. In this study, I examined factors that have been proven barriers and supports for rural students. Rural college students who were part of the TRiO program at a flagship university shared barriers and supports to access higher education. Students talked about their college journeys by telling digital stories, using computer-based tools to create narratives. On-campus resources, family support, finding a place to belong in college, and self-efficacy proved to be important access and persistence factors for students.

Is Retinal Metabolic Dysfunction At The Center Of The Pathogenesis Of Age-Related Macular Degeneration?, Thierry Léveillard, Nancy J. Philp, Florian Sennlaub

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) forms the outer blood⁻retina barrier and facilitates the transepithelial transport of glucose into the outer retina via GLUT1. Glucose is metabolized in photoreceptors via the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) but also by aerobic glycolysis to generate glycerol for the synthesis of phospholipids for the renewal of their outer segments. Aerobic glycolysis in the photoreceptors also leads to a high rate of production of lactate which is transported out of the subretinal space to the choroidal circulation by the RPE. Lactate taken up by the RPE is converted to pyruvate and metabolized …

Identification And Transformation Difficulty In Problem Solving: Electrophysiological Evidence From Chunk Decomposition, Zhonglu Zhang, Yu Luo, Chaolun Wang, Christopher M. Warren, Qi Xia, Qiang Xing, Bihua Cao, Yi Lei, Hong Li Feb 2019

Identification And Transformation Difficulty In Problem Solving: Electrophysiological Evidence From Chunk Decomposition, Zhonglu Zhang, Yu Luo, Chaolun Wang, Christopher M. Warren, Qi Xia, Qiang Xing, Bihua Cao, Yi Lei, Hong Li

Psychology Faculty Publications

A wealth of studies have investigated how to overcome experience-based constraints in creative problem solving. One such experience-based constraint is the tendency for people to view tightly organized visual stimuli as single, unified percepts, even when decomposition of those stimuli into component parts (termed chunk decomposition) would facilitate problem solving. The current study investigates the neural underpinnings of chunk decomposition in creative problem solving by analyzing event-related potentials. In two experiments, participants decomposed Chinese characters into the character’s component elements and then used the base elements to form a new valid character. The action could require decomposing a “tight” chunk, …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The physical arrangement of chromatin in the nucleus is cell type and species-specific, a fact particularly evident in sperm, in which most of the cytoplasm has been lost. Analysis of the characteristic falciform (“hook shaped”) sperm in mice is important in studies of sperm development, hybrid sterility, infertility, and toxicology. However, quantification of sperm shape differences typically relies on subjective manual assessment, rendering comparisons within and between samples difficult.

We have developed an analysis program for morphometric analysis of asymmetric nuclei and characterized the sperm of mice from a range of inbred, outbred, and wild-derived mouse strains. We find that …

Tradd Regulates Perinatal Development And Adulthood Survival In Mice Lacking Ripk1 And Ripk3., John P. Dowling, Mohamed Alsabbagh, Christina Del Casale, Zheng-Gang Liu, Jianke Zhang Feb 2019

Tradd Regulates Perinatal Development And Adulthood Survival In Mice Lacking Ripk1 And Ripk3., John P. Dowling, Mohamed Alsabbagh, Christina Del Casale, Zheng-Gang Liu, Jianke Zhang

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

TRADD is an adaptor for TNFR1-induced apoptosis and NFκB activation. However, TRADD-deficient mice undergo normal development and contain normal lymphoid populations, which contrasts with an embryonic defect in mice lacking FADD, the shared adaptor mediating apoptosis. Recent studies indicate FADD suppresses embryonic necroptosis mediated by RIPK1. TRADD was suggested to also mediate necroptosis. Here we report that targeting TRADD fails to rescue Fadd −/− embryos from necroptosis, and ablation of TRADD rescues Ripk1 −/− mice from perinatal lethality when RIPK3-mediated necroptosis is disabled. The resulting Ripk1 −/− Ripk3 −/− Tradd −/− mice survive until early adulthood, but die thereafter. A …

Association Of Age, Sex, And Pyrethroid Resistance Status On Survival And Cytochrome P450 Gene Expression In Aedes Aegypti (L.), Leslie C. Rault, Scott T. O'Neal, Ellis J. Johnson, Troy D. Anderson Feb 2019

Association Of Age, Sex, And Pyrethroid Resistance Status On Survival And Cytochrome P450 Gene Expression In Aedes Aegypti (L.), Leslie C. Rault, Scott T. O'Neal, Ellis J. Johnson, Troy D. Anderson

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Aedes aegypti is a vector of viruses that negatively impact human health. Insecticide resistance complicates mosquito control efforts, but understanding the mechanisms of resistance can help to improve management practices. This study examined different factors that could influence the interpretation of toxicity bioassays and gene expression studies in A. aegypti, including sex and age, in the context of resistance to pyrethroids. Bioassays using a pyrethroid-resistant strain, Puerto Rico (PR), and a pyrethroid-susceptible strain, Rockefeller (Rock), of A. aegypti were conducted with females and males of three age groups to determine differences in mortality induced by deltamethrin. Overall, strain was …

Fragmented Laws, Contingent Choices: The Tragicomedy Of The Village Commons In China, Shitong Qiao Feb 2019

Fragmented Laws, Contingent Choices: The Tragicomedy Of The Village Commons In China, Shitong Qiao

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Defining the direct conflict between law and social norms as a tragedy and their reconciliation as a comedy, this paper serves as a case study of the mixture of tragedies and comedies of collective land governance in China. The term tragicomedy encapsulates such a mixture. This paper presents two contrasting cases of collective land governance: one village co-op is captured by a mafia and the consequent mafia-style land development business is maintained through violence and the bribing of government officials; the other village co-op from time to time takes actions “in the name of law” in their bargaining for legal …

Southern Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Adult Emergence And Population Growth Assessment After Selection With Vacuolar Atpase-A Double-Stranded Rna Over Multiple Generations, Adriano E. Pereira, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Lance J. Meinke, Blair D. Siegfried Feb 2019

Southern Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Adult Emergence And Population Growth Assessment After Selection With Vacuolar Atpase-A Double-Stranded Rna Over Multiple Generations, Adriano E. Pereira, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Lance J. Meinke, Blair D. Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), was exposed over multiple generations to vacuolar (v)ATPase-A double-stranded (ds)RNA, first as adults and later, as neonate larvae. During adult selection, high mortality and lower fecundity were observed in the RNAi-selected cages after beetles were exposed to sublethal dsRNA concentrations that varied between LC40 and LC75. During larval selection, a delay in adult emergence and effects on population growth parameters were observed after neonates were exposed to sublethal dsRNA concentrations that varied between LC50 and LC70. Some of the parameters measured for adult emergence such as time to reach maximum …

Sustainable Utilization Of Desalination Concentrate, Amira Hesham Elbarmelgy Feb 2019

Sustainable Utilization Of Desalination Concentrate, Amira Hesham Elbarmelgy

Theses and Dissertations

Lack of water availability is a global crisis. Many arid countries are turning to desalination technologies in order to fulfill their water needs. Hypersaline water, brine, is the byproduct of desalination and can be dangerous to the environment if disposed of in an unsustainable manner. Research surrounding brine management focuses on improved methods of direct disposal, strategies of volume minimization, and reuse strategies. However, the mentioned brine management methods revolve around chemical and mechanical techniques requiring high technological skills, know-how and energy. This thesis aims to find biological solutions that use brine, with minimum resources, in low-cost, low-energy conditions to …

Helper T effector cytokines implicated in asthma modulate the contractility of human airway smooth muscle (HASM) cells. We have reported recently that a profibrotic cytokine, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, induces HASM cell shortening and airway hyperresponsiveness. Here, we assessed whether TGF-β1 affects the ability of HASM cells to relax in response to β2-agonists, a mainstay treatment for airway hyperresponsiveness in asthma. Overnight TGF-β1 treatment significantly impaired isoproterenol (ISO)-induced relaxation of carbachol-stimulated, isolated HASM cells. This single-cell mechanical hyporesponsiveness to ISO was corroborated by sustained increases in myosin light chain phosphorylation. In TGF-β1–treated HASM cells, ISO evoked markedly lower …

Physical And Numerical Modeling Of Infragravity Wave Generation And Transformation On Coral Reef Platforms, Gerd Masselink, Megan Tuck, Robert Mccall, Dongeren A Van, Murray Ford, Paul Kench

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

©2019. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. Wave transformation across reef platforms strongly controls sediment transport processes and coral reef island morphodynamics with infragravity (IG) waves playing an important contributing role. A small-scale (1:50) laboratory experiment and prototype numerical modeling are used to explore the characteristics of IG wave motion on coral reefs. The slope of the fore reef is the key factor controlling the mechanism of IG wave generation. Steep slopes (>1/10) are dominated by landward and seaward propagating breakpoint-forced long waves, whereas incoming and then released bound long waves become increasingly important for slopes <1/20. The breakpoint-forced long wave mechanism is the more effective generator of IG energy, and the most energetic IG motion (normalized by incident wave motion) is generated on reef platforms with a fore reef slope > 1/6. The water …

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) is the fifth most productive cereal crop worldwide with some hybrids having high biomass yield traits making it promising for sustainable, economical biofuel production. To maximize biofuel feedstock yields, a more complete understanding of metabolic responses to low nitrogen (N) will be useful for incorporation in crop improvement efforts. In this study, 10 diverse sorghum entries (including inbreds and hybrids) were field-grown under low and full N conditions and roots were sampled at two time points for metabolomics and 16S amplicon sequencing. Roots of plants grown under low N showed altered metabolic profiles at …

Comparison Of Σ-Hole And Π-Hole Tetrel Bonds In Complexes Of Borazine With Th3f And F2to/H2to (T=C,Si,Ge), Jingru Zhang, Qingze Hu, Qing-Zhong Li, Steve Scheiner, Shufeng Liu Feb 2019

Comparison Of Σ-Hole And Π-Hole Tetrel Bonds In Complexes Of Borazine With Th3f And F2to/H2to (T=C,Si,Ge), Jingru Zhang, Qingze Hu, Qing-Zhong Li, Steve Scheiner, Shufeng Liu

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The complexes between borazine and TH3F/F2TO/H2TO (T=C, Si, Ge) are investigated with high-level quantum chemical calculations. Borazine has three sites of negative electrostatic potential: the N atom, the ring center, and the H atom of the B-H bond, while TH3F and F2TO/H2TO provide the σ-hole and π-hole, respectively, for the tetrel bond. The N atom of borazine is the favored site for both the σ and π-hole tetrel bonds. Less stable dimers include a σ-tetrel bond to the borazine ring center and to the BH proton. The π-hole tetrel-bonded complexes are more strongly bound than aretheirσ-hole counterparts. Due to the …

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Post-Larval Yellow Perch Density, Steve Hauschildt Feb 2019

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Post-Larval Yellow Perch Density, Steve Hauschildt

Biology Graduate Theses

Yellow Perch Perca flavescens are important as forage for other species and for sport fishing in many northern lakes. However, estimating post-larval Yellow Perch populations can be difficult because of many environmental factors that cause unexplained variation. The objective of this study was to help reduce unexplained variation by determining a post-larval Yellow Perch population density estimate on Blackduck Lake, MN, provide guidance to help determine the number of trawls required for trawling-based recruitment indices to achieve varying levels of precision, and test for the effects of wind speed and direction on post-larval Yellow Perch spatial variability. This study estimated …
