Remaining Dentine Thickness Following Tooth Preparation And Its Impact On Dentine – Pulp Complex, Rudina Berani, Merita Barani Sveqla

International Journal of Business and Technology

There are many factors accused of causing pulpal damage, but studies indicate that endodontic complications after placement of fixed prosthetic crowns and bridges are entirely iatrogenic and as a consequence of a deep tooth preparation. In 2mm of the remaining dentine thickness after preparation, there are significant reductions in cellular cell adhesion molecules in the pulp of the prepared tooth data compared to those intact. Researchers confirm that even this decline may be an expression of early stages of pulp inflammation. According to Murray & co, the number of odontoblasts in a dentine thickness of 2.5-0.5mm, was reduced by 13.6%; …

Sustainable Women’S Entrepreneurship: A View From Two Brics Nations, Obianuju (Uju) E. Okeke-Uzodike

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women in Africa are poorer, less educated, and enjoy less access to jobs and opportunities than men. While that is true for women around the world, the situation in contemporary Africa appears deeper. Earlier neo-classical economists viewed women as irrational economic agents, but boosted by the intellectual activities of feminist economists that highlighted the gender bias of mainstream economics. The aid and development agencies such as the World Bank and UNDP have committed to poverty reduction by embracing and strengthening the idea of holistic human development to eliminate gender-related inequality. The concept is well spelt out in the national/regional policy …

Women, Metaphors And The Legitimisation Of Gender Bias In Spanish Proverbs, Benedicta Adokarley Lomotey Feb 2019

Women, Metaphors And The Legitimisation Of Gender Bias In Spanish Proverbs, Benedicta Adokarley Lomotey

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper aims at analysing the role of proverbs in the sustenance of gender violence within the Spanish context. As demonstrated by feminist linguistic activities, one of the avenues through which the status quo of both men and women are enacted and sustained is through language. However, given the complex nature of the relationship between gender and language, speakers often overlook the role of discourse on gender relations. The author investigates this inter-connection using a multidimensional approach which includes insights from Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) theory of metaphor and Austin’s (1965) Speech Act theory. This study confirms that quite a …

Towards A Politics Of Pain: Building Solidarities, Breaking Silences In Contemporary Chhattisgarh, India, Panchali Ray

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay is based on a series of interviews with Soni Sori, an activist, educationist, and a political figure, who has become the face of adivasi (tribal) resistance to state-corporate acquisition of community land for industry, in Chhattisgarh, India. Soni Sori, who is a prominent figure in the resistance movement against State atrocities on poor adivasi farmers, was accused of Left extremism, and subsequently arrested and sexually tortured in police custody. In her own words, this was to shame her into silence and prevent her from participating in public life, again. In this essay, I ask how does pain enter …

Socio-Demographic Predictors Of Political Participation Among Women In Nigeria: Insights From Afrobarometer 2015 Data, Emeka Eugene Dim, Joseph Yaw Asomah Feb 2019

Socio-Demographic Predictors Of Political Participation Among Women In Nigeria: Insights From Afrobarometer 2015 Data, Emeka Eugene Dim, Joseph Yaw Asomah

Journal of International Women's Studies

Despite the important role that women generally play in development processes, they are disproportionally underrepresented in politics and leadership positions compared to men, as exemplified in the case of Nigeria. Using the Afrobarometer data of 2015, this study seeks to examine the socio-economic factors that predict women’s political participation in Nigeria. The study shows that education, religion, place of residence, party affiliation, and geo-political zone predict political participation. Based on the beta values generated from the multivariate linear regression analysis, post-secondary education, South-Eastern geo-political zone, and party affiliation are the most significant predictors of women’s political participation. The study particularly …

Feminist Media Studies Across Borders: Re-Visiting Studies Within The Brazilian National Context, Carolina Matos Feb 2019

Feminist Media Studies Across Borders: Re-Visiting Studies Within The Brazilian National Context, Carolina Matos

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist media studies in the US and the UK have built a strong tradition of research, which has aimed to look at the correlation between structural gender inequalities in society and how these have been played out in the media. These range from classic studies on soap operas to debates on the sexualization of culture and the construction of forms of femininity within a post-feminist context (i.e. Gill, 2006; McNair, 2002; Ang, 1985; Tuchman at el, 1978). Research on the relationship between gender and the media has arguably become an important arena of inquiry in Latin America. Feminist media studies …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), one of the most important grain legume crops for direct human consumption, faces many challenges as a crop. Domesticated from wild relatives that inhabit a relatively narrow ecological niche, common bean faces a wide range of biotic and abiotic constraints within its diverse agroecological settings. Biotic stresses impacting common bean include numerous bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases and various insect and nematode pests, and abiotic stresses include drought, heat, cold, and soil nutrient deficiencies or toxicities. Breeding is often local, focusing on improvements in responses to biotic and abiotic stresses that are particular challenges …

Comparison Of Different Functions To Describe Growth From Weaning To Maturity In Crossbred Beef Cattle, Madeline J. Zimmermann, Larry A. Kuehn, Matthew L. Spangler, R. Mark Thallman, Warren M. Snelling, Ronald M. Lewis

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Cow mature weight (MWT) has increased in the past 30 yr. Larger cows cost more to maintain, but their efficiency—and thus profitability— depends on the production environment. Incorporating MWT effectively into selection and mating decisions requires understanding of growth to maturity. The objective of this study was to describe growth to maturity in crossbred beef cattle using Brody, spline, and quadratic functions. Parameter estimates utilized data on crossbred cows from cycle VII and continuous sampling phases of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. The MWT were estimated at 6 yr from the fitted parameters obtained …

Electrochromic Semiconductors As Colorimetric Sers Substrates With High Reproducibility And Renewability, Shan Cong, Zhen Wang, Wenbin Gong, Zhigang Chen, Weibang Lu, John R. Lombardi, Zhigang Zhao

Publications and Research

Electrochromic technology has been actively researched for displays, adjustable mirrors, smart windows, and other cutting-edge applications. However, it has never been proposed to overcome the critical problems in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Herein, we demonstrate a generic electrochromic strategy for ensuring the reproducibility and renewability of SERS substrates, which are both scientifically and technically important due to the great need for quantitative analysis, standardized production and low cost in SERS. This color-changing strategy is based on a unique quantitative relationship between the SERS signal amplification and the coloration degree within a certain range, in which the SERS …

Spatio-Temporal Patterns And Characteristics Of Swine Shipments In The U.S. Based On Interstate Certificates Of Veterinary Inspection, Erin E. Gorsich, Ryan S. Miller, Holly M. Mask, Clayton Hallman, Katie Portacci, Colleen T. Webb

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Domestic swine production in the United States is a critical economic and food security industry, yet there is currently no large-scale quantitative assessment of swine shipments available to support risk assessments. In this study, we provide a national-level characterization of the swine industry by quantifying the demographic (i.e. age, sex) patterns, spatio-temporal patterns, and the production diversity within swine shipments. We characterize annual networks of swine shipments using a 30% stratified sample of Interstate Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI), which are required for the interstate movement of agricultural animals. We used ICVIs in 2010 and 2011 from eight states that …

Is Dna Really A Natural Product? It's Time To Separate Fact From (Legal) Fiction: An Examination Of Dna Patentability As A Biological Algorithm In The Post-Myriad Era, Nicholas Ulen Feb 2019

Is Dna Really A Natural Product? It's Time To Separate Fact From (Legal) Fiction: An Examination Of Dna Patentability As A Biological Algorithm In The Post-Myriad Era, Nicholas Ulen

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In 2013, the United States Supreme Court delivered its landmark decision in Ass’n for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., holding isolated DNA unpatentable, thereby invalidating the claims of thousands of DNA patents in the process. The opinion, delivered by Justice Thomas, reasoned that the act of separating DNA from the body did not sufficiently transform the molecule beyond what naturally exists. Yet the Court found that line to be crossed when it held certain artificially synthesized complementary DNA molecules coding for the exact same gene patentable. Unlike the Federal Circuit, the Court focused its analysis not on the …

Obstacles To Translating The Promise Of Nanoparticles Into Viable Amyloid Disease Therapeutics, N. P. Van Der Munnik, M. A. Moss, M. J. Uline

Faculty Publications

Nanoparticles (NPs) constitute a powerful therapeutic platform with exciting prospects as potential inhibitors of amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation, a process associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Researchers have synthesized and tested a large collection of NPs with disparate sizes, shapes, electrostatic properties and surface ligands that evoke a variety of responses on Aβ aggregation. In spite of a decade of research on the NP-Aβ system and many promising experimental results, NPs have failed to progress to any level of clinical trials for AD. A theoretical framework with which to approach this physical system is presented featuring two simple metrics, (1) the extent …

An Emrb Multidrug Efflux Pump In Burkholderia Thailandensis With Unexpected Roles In Antibiotic Resistance, Afsana Sabrin, Brennan W. Gioe, Ashish Gupta, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

© 2019 Sabrin et al. The antibiotic trimethoprim is frequently used to manage Burkholderia infections, and members of the resistance-nodulation-division (RND) family of efflux pumps have been implicated in multidrug resistance of this species complex. We show here that a member of the distinct Escherichia coli multidrug resistance B (EmrB) family is a primary exporter of trimethoprim in Burkholderia thailandensis, as evidenced by increased trimethoprim sensitivity after inactivation of emrB, the gene that encodes EmrB. We also found that the emrB gene is up-regulated following the addition of gentamicin and that this up-regulation is due to repression of the gene …

A New Multivariate Optical Computing Microelement And Miniature Sensor For Spectroscopic Chemical Sensing In Harsh Environments: Design, Fabrication, And Testing, Christopher M. Jones, Bin Dai, Jimmy Price, Jian Li, Megan Pearl, Bill Soltmann, Michael L. Myrick

Faculty Publications

Multivariate optical computing (MOC) is a compressed sensing technique with the ability to provide accurate spectroscopic compositional analysis in a variety of different applications to multiple industries. Indeed, recent developments have demonstrated the successful deployment of MOC sensors in downhole/well-logging environments to interrogate the composition of hydrocarbon and other chemical constituents in oil and gas reservoirs. However, new challenges have necessitated sensors that operate at high temperatures and pressures (up to 230 °C and 138 MPa) as well as even smaller areas that require the miniaturization of their physical footprint. To this end, this paper details the design, fabrication, and …
