Needham, Matter, Form, And Us, Buyun Chen
History Faculty Works
Joseph Needham offered a vision of history that united his understanding of the physical world with his interpretation of social process, in which the material, social, and ideal realms were reciprocally constituted. This essay explores Needham’s ideas about matter and form to show how he developed a systematic theory of materialism in his early writings on science and social change. Shifting the ground of discourse in Needham’s project from “science” to “materialism,” the essay brings him into conversation with new materialists to reflect on the ongoing challenges in theorizing the relationship between social and material phenomena. Calling into question an …

Adequate greenhouse environmental management is very important for improving resource use efficiency and increasing vegetable yield. The objective of this study was to explore suitable climate and cultivation management for cucumber to achieve high yield and build optimal yield models in semi-closed greenhouses. A fruit cucumber cultivar Deltastar was grown over 4 years in greenhouse and weekly data of yields (mean, highest and lowest) and environmental variables, including total radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration were collected. Regression analyses were applied to develop the relationships and build best regression models of yields with environmental variables using …

Assessment Of Cardiac Indices Using M-Mode Echocardiography In Horse With Tachycardia, Mohamed Youssef, Medhat Nassif, Sabry El-Khodery, Maged El-Ashker, Alshimaa Farag
Mansoura Veterinary Medical Journal
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of tachycardia associated with abdominal pain in horse with colic on echocardiographic measurements. For this purpose, 20 horses were selected for this study; from which 10 healthy horses were randomly selected (control group), and 10 diseased horses exhibiting the clinical signs of flatulent colic referred to the hospital of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Mansoura University, Egypt. Cardiac functions were evaluated using M- mode echocardiography for measurement of the cardiac indices and functions. In horses with flatulent colic, there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in interventricular septal thickness at end- systole (IVSTs), left ventricular internal diameter at end- diastole (LVIDd), left ventricular posterior wall at end-diastole (LVPWd), stroke volume (SV), and ejection fraction (EF) compared with control group. However, there was a significant (P < 0.05) increase in left ventricular volume at end- systole (ESV) in comparison with control group. The results of the present study indicate that evaluation of cardiac indices and functions via echocardiography may be of great benefit for evaluation of clinical outcome of tachycardia associated with abdominal pain in horses.

Is One Secure Attachment Enough? Infant Cortisol Reactivity And The Security Of Infant-Mother And Infant-Father Attachments At The End Of The First Year, Patty X. Kuo, Ekjyot K. Saini, Elizabeth Tengelitsch, Brenda L. Volling
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Attachment security is theorized to shape stress reactivity, but extant work has failed to find consistent links between attachment security to mothers and infant cortisol reactivity. We examined family configurations of infant-mother and infant-father attachment security in relation to infant cortisol reactivity. One-year old infants (N = 180) participated in the Strange Situation with mothers and fathers in two counterbalanced lab visits, one month apart (12 and 13 months). Infants with secure attachments only to their fathers and not their mothers had higher cortisol levels than infants with a secure attachment to mother and also exhibited a blunted cortisol response …

Corn, Cows, And Climate Change: How Federal Agricultural Subsidies Enable Factory Farming And Exacerbate U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Trevor J. Smith
Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy
As people around the globe grapple with the realities of an ever-warming planet, Americans, too, are coping with some of the attendant consequences of climate change: severe droughts, storms, and wildfires to name just a few. In response, Americans are evaluating their personal and collective contributions to the climate crisis. Notwithstanding President Trump’s unilateral move in June 2017 to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, the international community is pressing forward with comprehensive strategies to mitigate anthropogenic sources of atmospheric carbon. Despite their best efforts, however, most of these actions focus on the energy and transportation sectors while …

Cross-Shelf Habitat Shifts By Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) In The Gulf Of Mexico, Michael A. Dance, Jay R. Rooker
Faculty Publications
Habitat shifts that occur during the life cycles of marine fishes influence population connectivity and structure. A generalized additive modeling approach was used to characterize relationships between environmental variables and the relative abundance of red snapper Lutjanus campechanus over unconsolidated substrate on the continental shelf (< 150 m) of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM) at three different life stages: juvenile (age-0, < 125 mm FL), sub-adult (age-1-2, 125–300 mm FL), and adult (age-2+, >300 mm FL). Fisheries independent data (2008–2014) were used to develop separate models for both the eastern and western GoM, and final models were used to predict the relative availability of suitable habitat for each life stage across the two regions. Predictor variables included in final models varied by age class and region, with …

Following a radical prostatectomy, the main surgical treatment for prostate cancer, a majority of men will experience some level of urinary incontinence. When severe, this incontinence creates social isolation, leads to risk of infection from dried urine, and prevents men from participating in activities they love. The most common treatment in the US is a surgically placed AMS 800, produced by Boston Scientific. The AMS 800 surgery is highly invasive with a lengthy recovery time. Also, the device requires manual activation using a pump in the scrotum and erodes the urethra over time by constant compression.

ENGS 89/90 Reports
Endoscopy is the medical technique of visualizing the internal organs by direct insertion of a small video camera into the body. The camera feeds live video to an external screen to view the area of interest. Endoscopic surgery of the upper airway currently poses a particular challenge to surgeons due to the a narrow operating space in the esophagus. There are two approaches: telescopic endoscope or operating microscope - each with their own limitations. With the telescopic approach, a surgeon holds an endoscope with one hand and a surgical instrument in the other, so they are only able to complete …

Development of perennial biomass cropping systems is focused on maximizing biomass yield with minimum inputs, particularly nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Historical breeding efforts have focused on increasing biomass yield but have ignored N-use efficiency. The purpose of this study was to quantify the increased N demand associated with realized gains in biomass yield from big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) breeding programs. Nitrogen demand was highly variable across locations and years, ranging from − 1.7 to + 6.8 kg N Mg−1 DM, with an average of 2.2 kg N Mg−1 DM. Increases in N demand were closely …

Grapevine vein clearing virus (GVCV) is associated with a vein-clearing and vine-decline disease. In this study, we surveyed wild Ampelopsis cordata from the Vitaceae family and found that 31% (35 of 113) of native A. cordata plants are infected with GVCV. The full-length genome sequence of one GVCV isolate from A. cordata shared 99.8% identical nucleotides with an isolate from a nearby cultivated ‘Chardonel’ grapevine, suggesting the occurrence of an insect vector. To identify a vector, we collected Aphis illinoisensis (common name: grape aphids) from wild A. cordata plants and detected GVCV in the aphid populations. We found that A. …
