A Qualitative Self-Study Of Educational Philosophy Within The Context Of A Structured Educational Framework, Tiffany Young Mar 2019

A Qualitative Self-Study Of Educational Philosophy Within The Context Of A Structured Educational Framework, Tiffany Young

Dissertations

This study came about as the result of my belief that my philosophy as an educator was no longer in alignment with that of the school district in which I taught. As a result, I decided to conduct a self-study that incorporated my own reflections of myself and my teaching, as well as those of my then-current and previous colleagues and thencurrent and previous administrators/building leaders. Participants varied in their positions and in their number of years of teaching experience, roles, age, gender, and then-current teaching status. It was important to me that I had people with whom I had …

Anticipating Mothering In The Mexican Origin Woman, Susan M. Baxley Mar 2019

Anticipating Mothering In The Mexican Origin Woman, Susan M. Baxley

Dissertations

Not all women experience pregnancy and motherhood in the same way. There needs to be a greater understanding of how Mexican origin women experience pregnancy and anticipate mothering since Hispanics comprise the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive inquiry was to explore the meaning of attachment, commitment, and preparation during pregnancy as an anticipatory phase of mothering for the Mexican origin woman giving birth in the United States.

Carving A Niche For Australian Practice Nurses In Chronic Heart Failure Management, Elizabeth Jane Halcomb Mar 2019

Carving A Niche For Australian Practice Nurses In Chronic Heart Failure Management, Elizabeth Jane Halcomb

Dissertations

Chronic and complex conditions are a significant concern within contemporary health care systems. The ageing population and improvements in survival from acute cardiac illness have seen an increasing incidence of heart failure (HF). Heart failure represents a significant burden on both the individual and the wider community. Despite effective pharmacotherapy and established evidence-based management guidelines, the overall prognosis from HR is poor. The complexity of the disease process and the highly developed evidence-base makes HR an excellent exemplar for the management of a range of chronic conditions. Studies undertaken as part of the 'Carving a niche for Australian practice nurses' …

The Effect Of Gender On A Predictive Model Of Violent Behaviors In Rural Youth Using A Contextual Framework, Kathleen T. Patterson

Dissertations

Adolescent violence is a serious health concern. It is manifest by aggressive and delinquent behavior in many of the contexts in which the adolescent is embedded: the family, peer group, school and community. Many research studies have focused on the risk behaviors of substance use, firearm availability and victimization in urban settings. Rural youth are also at risk, yet empirical efforts have been sparse with this population. The specific aims of this study with rural youth were: (1) to propose and test a predictive model of violent behavior that involves the individual characteristics of the adolescent, the risk/opportunity potential of …

The Tenderness Process In Mother-Infant Couples: The Relationship Of Maternal Perception And Anxiety To Infant Satiety And Anxiety, Deidre Marion Blank Mar 2019

The Tenderness Process In Mother-Infant Couples: The Relationship Of Maternal Perception And Anxiety To Infant Satiety And Anxiety, Deidre Marion Blank

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to identify what impact, if any, maternal perception and anxiety had on an infant at the time of feeding. The framework for testing the relationship was Harry Stack Sullivan's interpersonal theory of psychiatry, as it related specifically to mother-infant tenderness. For the study, tenderness was restricted to a reciprocal process in which the infant had a physiochemical need for milk and the mother a complimentary need to satisfy the infant. Of importance to Sullivan was the fact that an infant had to depend on the intervention of others for survival and therefore manifested a …

Evaluation Of Selected Watershed Characteristics To Identify Best Management Practices To Reduce Nebraskan Nitrate Loads From Nebraska To The Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Troy E. Gilmore, Tiffany Messer, Daran Rudnick, Thomas Heatherly Mar 2019

Evaluation Of Selected Watershed Characteristics To Identify Best Management Practices To Reduce Nebraskan Nitrate Loads From Nebraska To The Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin, Aaron R. Mittelstet, Troy E. Gilmore, Tiffany Messer, Daran Rudnick, Thomas Heatherly

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Nebraskan streams contribute excess nitrogen to the Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin and Gulf of Mexico, which results in major water-quality impairments. Reducing the amount of nitrogen (N) exported in these streams requires the use of best management practices (BMPs) within the landscape. However, proper BMP utilization has rarely been statistically connected to potential controls of N export within watersheds, particularly precipitation and soil characteristics. In this study, 19 watershed variables were evaluated in five categories (hydrological, physiographic, point sources, land use, and soil properties) to determine the characteristics that influenced variable nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations in 17 Nebraska watersheds …

Inflammation contributes to cancer development and inflammatory bowel disease is an important risk factor for CRC. The aim of this study is to assess whether a widely used probiotic Enterococcus faecalis can modulate the NLRP3 inflammasome and protect against colitis and colitis-associated CRC. We studied the effect of heat-killed cells of E. faecalis on NLRP3 inflammasome activation in THP-1-derived macrophages. Pretreatment of E. faecalis or NLRP3 siRNA can inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation in macrophages in response to fecal content or …

Ethics Of Care In Action: A Review After Its 30 Years Of Establishment, Shima Rostami Mar 2019

Ethics Of Care In Action: A Review After Its 30 Years Of Establishment, Shima Rostami

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Using a narrow sample in his study of moral development, Lawrence Kohlberg in developing his theory of Ethics of Justice defined the “moral as the realm of abstract universal principles formulated by disembodied subjects” (Hekman, 2013, p. 101). Kohlberg resulted that women’s level of what is ethically normal is less than what is in men. Consequently, “more often influenced in their judgments by their feeling, women show less sense of justice than men” (Freud, 1925, pp. 257-258). To challenge Kohlberg’s Ethics of Justice, in 1982 In a Different Voice, Carol Gilligan shifted the voice of moral psychology by pointing …

Systems Genetics Of Sensation Seeking., Price E. Dickson, Tyler A Roy, Kathryn A. Mcnaughton, Troy Wilcox, Padam Kumar, Elissa J Chesler

Faculty Research 2019

Sensation seeking is a multifaceted, heritable trait which predicts the development of substance use and abuse in humans; similar phenomena have been observed in rodents. Genetic correlations among sensation seeking and substance use indicate shared biological mechanisms, but the genes and networks underlying these relationships remain elusive. Here, we used a systems genetics approach in the BXD recombinant inbred mouse panel to identify shared genetic mechanisms underlying substance use and preference for sensory stimuli, an intermediate phenotype of sensation seeking. Using the operant sensation seeking (OSS) paradigm, we quantified preference for sensory stimuli in 120 male and 127 female mice …

Faculty Research 2019

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive adult brain malignancy against which conventional surgery and chemoradiation provide limited benefit. Even when a good treatment response is obtained, recurrence inevitably occurs either locally (∼80%) or distally (∼20%), driven by cancer clones that are often genomically distinct from those in the primary tumour. Glioblastoma cells display a characteristic infiltrative phenotype, invading the surrounding tissue and often spreading across the whole brain. Cancer cells responsible for relapse can reside in two compartments of residual disease that are left behind after treatment: the infiltrated normal brain parenchyma and the sub-ventricular zone. However, these …

The Need For Centralized Government To Encourage A Decentralized Energy Grid, Andrew Dickerson Mar 2019

The Need For Centralized Government To Encourage A Decentralized Energy Grid, Andrew Dickerson

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Global warming and the subsequent climate change caused many nations and states to rethink energy production and consumption. In place of carbon-emitting energy sources, countries adopted renewable energy sources. However, in the United States, use of these energy sources, while available, is largely hampered by a lack of uniformity in state regulations. While net metering acts, tax credits, and rebates incentivize homeowners and some businesses to incorporate these energy sources, there are still several obstacles to the nation’s substantial reliance on renewable energy.

Self-Efficacy In Information Security: A Mixed Methods Study Of Deaf End-Users, Kyle Murbach Mar 2019

Self-Efficacy In Information Security: A Mixed Methods Study Of Deaf End-Users, Kyle Murbach

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

This explanatory sequential mixed methods study focuses on gaining an overall understanding of the potential variances in self-efficacy in information security and security practice behavior in the deaf population. Very little is understood about the deaf experience when engaging in security practices and their confidence levels in doing so. Due to the fastpaced nature of cyber security and its many facets, the human factor plays a crucial role in the success of cyber security. It is important to understand the potential implications of variances that may affect a deaf end-user’s security practice behavior to be able to provide more effective …

Wasatch Front Atmospheric Deposition Reflects Regional Desert Dust And Local Anthropogenic Sources, Michael Max Goodman Mar 2019

Wasatch Front Atmospheric Deposition Reflects Regional Desert Dust And Local Anthropogenic Sources, Michael Max Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

Dust originating from dry lakes contributes harmful and toxic elements to downwind urban areas and mountain snowpack that is compounded by local contaminant inputs from anthropogenic sources. To evaluate dust contributions to an urban area from regional playas, we sampled playa dust sources, urban dust deposition, and snow dust deposition in central Utah, USA. Samples were analyzed for grain size, mineralogy, and chemistry. Bulk mineralogy between playa, urban, and snow dust samples was similar, with silicate, carbonate, and evaporite minerals. Grain size distribution between fine playa, urban, and snow dust particles was also similar. Elements found at high concentrations in …

Pou5f3, Soxb1, And Nanog Remodel Chromatin On High Nucleosome Affinity Regions At Zygotic Genome Activation, Marina Veil, Lev Y. Yampolsky, Björn Grüning, Daria Onichtchouk Mar 2019

Pou5f3, Soxb1, And Nanog Remodel Chromatin On High Nucleosome Affinity Regions At Zygotic Genome Activation, Marina Veil, Lev Y. Yampolsky, Björn Grüning, Daria Onichtchouk

ETSU Faculty Works

The zebrafish embryo is transcriptionally mostly quiescent during the first 10 cell cycles, until the main wave of zygotic genome activation (ZGA) occurs, accompanied by fast chromatin remodeling. At ZGA, homologs of the mammalian stem cell transcription factors (TFs) Pou5f3, Nanog, and Sox19b bind to thousands of developmental enhancers to initiate transcription. So far, how these TFs influence chromatin dynamics at ZGA has remained unresolved. To address this question, we analyzed nucleosome positions in wild-type and maternal-zygotic (MZ) mutants for pou5f3 and nanog by MNase-seq. We show that Nanog, Sox19b, and Pou5f3 bind to the high nucleosome affinity regions (HNARs). …

Algorithmic Fair Use, Dan L. Burk Mar 2019

Algorithmic Fair Use, Dan L. Burk

University of Chicago Law Review

Legal governance and regulation are becoming increasingly reliant on data collection and algorithmic data processing. In the area of copyright, online protection of digitized works is frequently mediated by algorithmic enforcement systems intended to purge illicit content and limit the liability of YouTube, Facebook, and other content platforms. But unauthorized content is not necessarily illicit content. Many unauthorized digital postings may claim legitimacy under statutory exceptions like the legal balancing standard known as fair use. Such exceptions exist to ameliorate the negative effects of copyright on public discourse, personal enrichment, and artistic creativity. Consequently, it may seem desirable to incorporate …

Using Motion-Activated Trail Cameras To Study Diet And Productivity Of Cliff-Nesting Golden Eagles, Jordan T. Harrison, Michael N. Kochert, Benjamin P. Pauli, Julie A. Heath

Raptor Research Center Publications and Presentations

Studies of cliff-nesting raptors can be challenging because direct observations of nest contents are difficult. Our goals were to develop a protocol for installing motion-activated trail cameras at Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nests to record diet information and productivity, and to estimate prey detection probability using different diet study methods. In 2014 and 2015, we installed cameras at 12 Golden Eagle nests with 18–42-d-old nestlings. Following installation, we monitored adult behavior using direct observation and post-installation image review. At two nests, adult eagles did not return to nests or exhibited behaviors suggesting avoidance of the cameras, but returned …

Staying Awake To Stay Alive: A Circuit Controlling Starvation-Induced Waking, Krishna Melnattur, Paul Shaw Mar 2019

Staying Awake To Stay Alive: A Circuit Controlling Starvation-Induced Waking, Krishna Melnattur, Paul Shaw

Open Access Publications

The balance of sleep and wake is plastic and changes to meet environmental demands. Mechanisms that allow an animal to suppress sleep and maintain waking in potentially adverse situations could serve adaptive functions in evolution. The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is well poised as a system in which to explore these questions. The environment changes sleep and wake in flies, e.g., starvation induces waking in Drosophila as it does in many animals. Further, the sophisticated neurobiological toolkit available to Drosophila researchers gives the fly a great advantage as a system to investigate the precise neurobiological mechanisms underlying these adaptive changes. …

Dying U.S. Blood Supply Needs Life-Giving Transfusion Of Its Own:Regaining And Maintaining A Critical National Resource, Laura Dedecker

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

There are many components vitally essential to our biological function, and humanity tends to recognize, and often fight against, mounting threats to those very things. As a civilized society, Americans, in general, expect clean air, drinkable water, and safe food on a daily basis. However, a resource equally as essential to each of us is rarely recognized for its utility and necessity until a threat to its viability becomes personal. The blood shortage in the United States grows more critical every day, but for those of us lucky enough to not urgently need blood, the threat feels more removed and …
