Planning For A Corpus Of Continuous Ratings Of Spoken Dialog Quality, Nigel G. Ward Mar 2019

Planning For A Corpus Of Continuous Ratings Of Spoken Dialog Quality, Nigel G. Ward

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

While many aspects of speech processing, including speech recognition and speech synthesis, have seen enormous advances over the past few years, advances in dialog have been more modest. This difference is largely attributable to the lack of resources that can support machine learning of dialog models and dialog phenomena. The research community accordingly needs a corpus of spoken dialogs with quality annotations every 100 milliseconds or so. We envisage a large and diverse collection: on the order of fifty hours of data, representing hundreds of speakers and many genres, with every instant labeled for interaction quality by one or more …

Recent Efforts To Elucidate The Scientific Validity Of Animal-Based Drug Tests By The Pharmaceutical Industry, Pro-Testing Lobby Groups, And Animal Welfare Organisations, Jarrod Bailey Mar 2019

Recent Efforts To Elucidate The Scientific Validity Of Animal-Based Drug Tests By The Pharmaceutical Industry, Pro-Testing Lobby Groups, And Animal Welfare Organisations, Jarrod Bailey

Validation of Animal Experimentation Collection

Background: Even after several decades of human drug development, there remains an absence of published, substantial, comprehensive data to validate the use of animals in preclinical drug testing, and to point to their predictive nature with regard to human safety/toxicity and efficacy. Two recent papers, authored by pharmaceutical industry scientists, added to the few substantive publications that exist. In this brief article, we discuss both these papers, as well as our own series of three papers on the subject, and also various views and criticisms of lobby groups that advocate the animal testing of new drugs.

Main text: We argue …

Natology Collection

Canine dystocia is a relatively common veterinary presentation. First opinion emergency care clinical data from 50 Vets Now clinics across the UK were used to explore dystocia management and outcomes in bitches. Caesarean section (CS) was performed on 341/701 (48.6 per cent (95 per cent CI 44.9 to 52.4)) of dystocia cases. The bulldog (OR 7.60, 95 per cent CI 1.51 to 38.26, P=0.014), Border terrier (OR 4.89, 95 per cent CI 0.92 to 25.97, P=0.063) and golden retriever (OR 4.07, 95 per cent CI 0.97 to 17.07, P=0.055) had the highest odds of CS among dystocic bitches compared with …

Salmonid Species Diversity Predicts Salmon Consumption By Terrestrial Wildlife, Christina N. Service, Andrew N. Bateman, Megan S. Adams, Kyle A. Artelle, Thomas E. Reimchen, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont Mar 2019

Salmonid Species Diversity Predicts Salmon Consumption By Terrestrial Wildlife, Christina N. Service, Andrew N. Bateman, Megan S. Adams, Kyle A. Artelle, Thomas E. Reimchen, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont

Habitat and Trophic Ecology Collection

1. Resource waves—spatial variation in resource phenology that extends feeding opportunities for mobile consumers—can affect the behaviour and productivity of recipient populations. Interspecific diversity among Pacific salmon species (Oncorhynchus spp.) creates staggered spawning events across space and time, thereby prolonging availability to terrestrial wildlife.

2. We sought to understand how such variation might influence consumption by terrestrial predators compared with resource abundance and intra- and interspecific competition.

3. Using stable isotope analysis, we investigated how the proportion of salmon in the annual diet of male black bears (Ursus americanus; n = 405) varies with species diversity and density of spawning …

In Individuals That Are Genetically Predisposed To Colon Cancer, How Does High Intake Of Fish Oil Compared To Low Fish Oil Intake Affect The Risk Of Developing Colon Cancer, Tatiana Mudrenko Mar 2019

In Individuals That Are Genetically Predisposed To Colon Cancer, How Does High Intake Of Fish Oil Compared To Low Fish Oil Intake Affect The Risk Of Developing Colon Cancer, Tatiana Mudrenko

Physician Assistant Capstones

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer type in the United States and the third world wide.1-2 Mortality rates have decreased over the years due to early screening and improvements in treatment; however, the total cancer deaths worldwide are expected to rise. The predicted increase in global CRC deaths is explained not only by population growth and aging but also by risk factors such as lifestyle.3 Even though colorectal cancer can be genetically inherited, major evidence shows that dietary factors can modify the risk of developing it. Implementing appropriate diet and early screening in individuals who are genetically …

Changes In Achilles Tendon Thickness Following A 10 – Week Heavy Load Eccentric Exercise Program, M. Carlson, B. Criswell, D. Dean, M. Gabourel, N. Merchen, Tyler Cuddeford, Marcey Keefer Hutchison

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy

Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is a common overuse injury in running or jumping activities where the tendon is unable to properly respond to the load. AT increases tendon thickness while decreasing stiffness and function (1).

Studies have shown that tendon properties can be positively influenced by load (5,6). Therefore, AT has typically been treated conservatively through physical therapy, with eccentric calf strengthening exercises as the focus of the treatment (2).

Effective Interventions For Sensory Modulation Disorder In Children That Experienced Complex Trauma, Mahalia Adams, Madison Herfert

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Case

George is a six-year-old boy that has experienced post-utero trauma. His biological parents often neglected and abused him. At the age of two, George was adopted. He is now demonstrating difficulty processing and responding to sensory input approximately. Specifically, George is over-responsive to auditory input and under-responsive to tactile input. Due to these sensory modulation difficulties, George is struggling to succeed in class and behave at home.

Immigration, Incarceration, Deportation: Asian Americans In The Criminal Justice System, Agnes Mung Mar 2019

Immigration, Incarceration, Deportation: Asian Americans In The Criminal Justice System, Agnes Mung

History

Asian Americans have been long overlooked in the United States for their contributions and have been restricted by ever-changing stereotypes and perceptions. Within the Asian American community, the incarcerated population and former criminals have been hidden because of cultural stigmas and missing statistics. In the 1980s, a large population of Asian American youth were becoming involved in criminal activity because of difficulty adapting to life in the United States after arriving at a young age. Gang membership and racial profiling increased the chances that Asian Americans would be arrested, although Asian Americans are less likely to be sentenced to prison …

Cognition And The Brain Of Brood Parasitic Cowbirds., David F Sherry, Mélanie F Guigueno Mar 2019

Cognition And The Brain Of Brood Parasitic Cowbirds., David F Sherry, Mélanie F Guigueno

Psychology Publications

Cowbirds are brood parasites. Females lay their eggs in the nests of other species, which then incubate the cowbird eggs and raise the young cowbirds. Finding and returning to heterospecific nests presents cowbirds with several cognitive challenges. In some species, such as brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater), females but not males search for and remember the locations of potential host nests. We describe recent research on sex differences in cognition and the hippocampus associated with this sex difference in search for host nests. Female brown-headed cowbirds perform better than males on some, but not all, tests of spatial memory and females …

Loss Of Ion Homeostasis Is Not The Cause Of Chill Coma Or Impaired Dispersal In False Codling Moth Thaumatotibia Leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Minette Karsten, Jacqueline E. Lebenzon, Brent J. Sinclair, John S. Terblanche Mar 2019

Loss Of Ion Homeostasis Is Not The Cause Of Chill Coma Or Impaired Dispersal In False Codling Moth Thaumatotibia Leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Minette Karsten, Jacqueline E. Lebenzon, Brent J. Sinclair, John S. Terblanche

Biology Publications

Dispersal is a central requirement of a successful sterile insect release programme, but field-released false codling moth (FCM) typically suffer from poor dispersal ability, especially at low ambient temperatures. Here we test the hypothesis that poor activity and dispersal in FCM is caused by delayed or perturbed recovery of ion and/or water homeostasis after chilling for handling and transport prior to field release. Hemolymph and flight muscle were collected from two treatment groups at three time points that targeted thermal conditions above and below the chill coma induction threshold of ~ 6 °C: 1) control moths kept at 25 °C, …

How Crickets Become Freeze Tolerant: The Transcriptomic Underpinnings Of Acclimation In Gryllus Veletis, Jantina Toxopeus, Lauren E. Des Marteaux, Brent J. Sinclair

Biology Publications

Some ectotherms can survive internal ice formation. In temperate regions, freeze tolerance is often induced by decreasing temperature and/or photoperiod during autumn. However, we have limited understanding of how seasonal changes in physiology contribute to freeze tolerance, and how these changes are regulated. During a six week autumn-like acclimation, late-instar juveniles of the spring field cricket Gryllus veletis (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) become freeze tolerant, which is correlated with accumulation of low molecular weight cryoprotectants, elevation of the temperature at which freezing begins, and metabolic rate suppression. We used RNA-Seq to assemble a de novo transcriptome of this emerging laboratory model for …

The Gradient Of The Reinforcement Landscape Influences Sensorimotor Learning, Joshua G.A. Cashaback, Christopher K. Lao, Dimitrios J. Palidis, Susan K. Coltman, Heather R. Mcgregor, Paul L. Gribble

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2019 Cashaback et al. Consideration of previous successes and failures is essential to mastering a motor skill. Much of what we know about how humans and animals learn from such reinforcement feedback comes from experiments that involve sampling from a small number of discrete actions. Yet, it is less understood how we learn through reinforcement feedback when sampling from a continuous set of possible actions. Navigating a continuous set of possible actions likely requires using gradient information to maximize success. Here we addressed how humans adapt the aim of their hand when experiencing reinforcement feedback that was associated with …

2016 - California Land Use And Management - A Resource Management Strategy Of The California Water Plan

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

Land use planning and management cuts across many resource management strategies. More efficient and effective land use is linked to several resource management strategies including watershed, water use efficiency, groundwater quality, flood management, parks and recreation, climate change adaptive management and agricultural lands stewardship. Directly development away from agricultural lands permits multi-objective management of these lands for agricultural preservation, floodplain management, water quality, habitat conservation, and sustainable development. In addition, planning for more compact and sustainable communities, both urban and rural, will assist in reducing reliance on the state-s water supply, and result in more efficient use of California’s water …
