“Got Water?” The Effects Of Globalized Agribusiness On Consumers’ Access To Water Sources, Lorena Garcia-Ramon
“Got Water?” The Effects Of Globalized Agribusiness On Consumers’ Access To Water Sources, Lorena Garcia-Ramon
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This paper conceptually examines the consequences of globalized industrial agriculture on consumers’ access to clean water sources. It identifies the historical conditioners that allowed contemporary agribusiness corporations to gain the influence they currently hold over global water consumption, and it discusses the struggles that consumers face without access to clean water. The paper makes an original contribution by shifting the focus from the fact that vulnerable consumers do not have access to clean water to the reasons why they do not have access. It is suggested that water conservation strategies should not only be implemented at the consumer level, but …

Framing Matters: The Influence Of Group-Image Threat On Reactions To Affirmative Action Policies, Kisha S. Jones, Anuradha Anantharaman, Anjali Bhatt
Personnel Assessment and Decisions
Affirmative action (AA) attempts to rectify the institutional effects of prior employment discrimination toward minority groups. Although AA has played a large role in increasing workplace diversity, organizations may vary in their perspectives towards diversity itself, ranging from a sole focus on increasing diversity to appreciating the value diversity may add. Support for AA has been considered as a form of White identity management (Knowles, Lowery, Chow, & Unzueta, 2014) and is impacted by the extent to which White people experience group-image threat to their racial identity. Our findings suggest that the level of group-image threat experienced by White people …

Change Ready, Resistant, Or Both? Exploring The Concepts Of Individual Change Readiness And Resistance To Organizational Change, Eva Repovš, Mateja Drnovšek, Robert Kaše
Economic and Business Review
This paper is a qualitative review of two concepts: change readiness and resistance to change. We review their use, clarify their conceptual underpinnings, and address the assumption of them being the opposite poles of the same continuum. We juxtapose the two concepts and analyze their dimensions which commonly represent a source of ambiguity about their meaning, review their evolution, and compare them to similar concepts. We argue that resistance to change addresses two important aspects: resistance as behavior and resistance as attitude. We argue that because resistance to change and change readiness share attitudinal roots, they should be looked at …

Mixed Signals: The Unintended Effects Of Diversity Initiatives, Tessa L. Dover, Cheryl R. Kaiser, Brenda Major
Mixed Signals: The Unintended Effects Of Diversity Initiatives, Tessa L. Dover, Cheryl R. Kaiser, Brenda Major
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Organizational diversity initiatives—programs and policies intended to increase the fairness of organizations and promote the inclusion, hiring, retention, and promotion of underrepresented groups—are ubiquitous. Despite the widespread implementation of diversity initiatives, several empirical investigations point to challenges associated with these initiatives. We suggest that one of the challenges hindering the effectiveness of diversity management involves the unintended signals that these initiatives send. Specifically, we review social psychological evidence that the mere presence of diversity initiatives can have unintended consequences through the communication of (1) fairness signals, (2) inclusion signals, and (3) competence signals. The presence of organizational diversity initiatives may …
Should All Stakeholders Be Treated Fairly? Identifying Stakeholders That Legitimately Matter, Desmond Ng
Should All Stakeholders Be Treated Fairly? Identifying Stakeholders That Legitimately Matter, Desmond Ng
Organization Management Journal
A key contribution of stakeholder research is that a firm’s purpose and objective is influenced by those stakeholders who have a legitimate stake in a firm’s business activities. Yet, identifying those that have a legitimate stake remains a challenge in stakeholder research. This research draws on legitimacy arguments to explain how stakeholders develop accountability and reliability in their legal and moral claims and how legitimacy influences a firm-manager’s obligations of fairness to these stakeholder groups. A concept of directness, consisting of close and relational specific exchanges, is introduced to explain this legitimation process. Directness offers accountability and reliability when an …

The Role Of Sensemaking And Organizational Identification In Employee Engagement For Sustainability, Kent D. Fairfield
Organization Management Journal
This exploratory study examines how sensemaking and organizational identification occur inside an organization and how they can affect how employees engage in managing for sustainability. Qualitative data suggest a positive effect of organizational identification on support for sustainability goals and actions and, conversely, how individual sustainability actions may in turn increase organizational identification. The findings from interviews of a sample of eight companies reveal many different goals, challenges, and means of seeking sustainability. Analysis points toward the dynamics of cognitive and emotional processing across this diverse sample, suggesting implications for practitioners and further research.

Chapter 4: Message Design For Instructional Designers - Human Performance Technology, Dana Garcia
Instructional Message Design, Volume 1
How often do you take on an assignment or responsibility and reflect I knew how to do it better, but I didn’t? I’ll do better next time. Do you really do better next time? Maybe? Honestly, probably not but why is that? Human Performance Technology is focused on answering those questions. It gets to the root cause of why we don’t meet desired performance levels. The value of finding foundational causes for performance deficiencies is maximizing human capital because the largest expense of most companies is payroll. The most common investment in their employees is providing more opportunities for instruction …

An Examination Of Efficacy And Resilience In College Students: Influences On Socially Responsible Leadership, Paula Berry Atkins
An Examination Of Efficacy And Resilience In College Students: Influences On Socially Responsible Leadership, Paula Berry Atkins
Doctoral Dissertations
My study explored socially responsible leadership and its relationship to leader efficacy and resilience in college students. The investigation also examined the role of gender and race in these relationships. The study employed the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL), which assesses student and educational outcomes relevant to the values underlying the Social Change Model of Student Leadership. The MSL utilizes the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (Tyree, 1998) as a foundation but also includes measures of leader efficacy and resilience. Utilizing archival data from the 2015 administration of the MSL, my sample (N=840) included equal numbers of males and females equally …
Assessing The Efficacy Of The Bayh-Dole Act Through The Lens Of University Technology Transfer Offices (Ttos), David Orozco
Assessing The Efficacy Of The Bayh-Dole Act Through The Lens Of University Technology Transfer Offices (Ttos), David Orozco
North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology
Universities are unique environments that thrive on the research and curiosity of faculty and students. To disseminate knowledge and potentially derive lucrative sources of funding, universities have aggressively entered the field of technology commercialization and patenting. The passage of the Bayh-Dole Act was instrumental to encourage this activity and the result has been an explosion of university-related patenting. This activity comes at a social cost, however, since patents restrict knowledge transfers and may create deadweight losses. These costs are amplified if technology transfer office (TTO) activities are viewed from a narrow financial or cost-benefit viewpoint. As demonstrated in this study, …
Teacher Perceptions On The Impact Of Professional Student–Teacher Relationships On Economically Disadvantaged Student’S Effort, Audra Funk
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The value of relationships in education continues to grow as educational leaders raise awareness for social emotional learning. This phenomenological research study examined teacher perceptions of the connection between student–teacher relationships and student effort with economically disadvantaged students. A brief overview of research involving popular educational leadership styles led to the evaluation of student–teacher relationships’ impact on student effort. Answering the central research question, how do teachers perceive the impact of student–teacher relationships on student effort of economically disadvantaged students, study participants shared their experiences in education that yielded value to relational connections with students. Interpreted through the lens of …

The Church's Lament: Moving The White Church From Grief Of Complicity To Lament, Kristin Hamilton
The Church's Lament: Moving The White Church From Grief Of Complicity To Lament, Kristin Hamilton
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation begins with the presupposition that leaders and members of the white, evangelical church are aware that there is an ongoing racial struggle in the United States, and in the church. Beginning with the theory that the church is in denial regarding historical complicity toward racism and white supremacy, this paper uses Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s Grief Stage model to explore how the white church has become stuck in the early stages of grief (denial and anger). This exploration reviews historic and current examples in which white Christians have been complicit with systematic oppression against Black people and non-Black persons of …

The Influence Of Socioeconomic Factors To The Use Of Mobile Phones In The Agricultural Sector Of Tanzania, Edison Wazoel Lubua Dr, Michael E. Kyobe Prof.
The African Journal of Information Systems
This study determined the influence of socioeconomic factors to the adoption of mobile phones in the farming community of Tanzania. Currently, a series of well-established models (such as the TAM, UTAUT and the Social Capital Model) provide inadequate consideration toward socioeconomic factors, by ignoring them, or putting them under the same cluster, regardless of their differences in impacting the technology use. Methodologically, a survey strategy was adopted, with a sample of 116 respondents. The study involved farmers along the Pangani River Basin, found in Kilimanjaro and Tanga Regions of Tanzania. Data was analyzed using advanced quantitative methods such as the …

Leading Organizational Change: A Qualitative Examination Of Experiences Of Traditional Public School Principals, Nikeshia Leatherwood
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The Every Student Succeeds Act has set the course for new accountability measures for school and system leaders. How principals lead organizational change might be key to the success their schools experience and the achievement results of their students. This phenomenological study examined the professional experiences, leadership trainings, and strategic initiatives of traditional public school principals who led organizational change efforts that resulted in two academic rating increases within a three-year period. Five principals, representing elementary and high school, were interviewed to collect data on their experiences of leading successful organizational change. Using Moustakas’ (1994) phenomenological method, rigor was established …
An Exploratory Study Of Private School Admission Policies For Students Of Same-Sex Parents, Homosexual, And Transgender Students, Karen Kay Caroe
An Exploratory Study Of Private School Admission Policies For Students Of Same-Sex Parents, Homosexual, And Transgender Students, Karen Kay Caroe
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
This mixed-methods, non-experimental, exploratory study investigated the private school admission policies related to the admission of students from same-sex families and homosexual or transgender students. The US Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) has had far-reaching consequences for Christian businesses, organizations and ministries. As the rapidly changing socio-political environment embraces LGBTQ concerns, private religious schools need to re-evaluate their admission policies and prepare to address new types of admission decisions. The theory base in this study was the evolutionary theory of social change. In this present study, the results of a nation-wide, anonymous on-line survey (n = 80) …

Perioperative Fluid Management For Elective Colorectal Surgery Patients Utilizing An Eras Protocol: A Best Practice Recommendation, Callie Bridges, Nicole Mason Walters
Perioperative Fluid Management For Elective Colorectal Surgery Patients Utilizing An Eras Protocol: A Best Practice Recommendation, Callie Bridges, Nicole Mason Walters
Doctoral Projects
CRNAs manage intraoperative fluid therapy as a vital part of anesthesia practice to optimize patient conditions. To maintain homeostasis, fluid therapy must incorporate the many fluid shifts that occur during the perioperative period, in particular, those patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery. Patients are at risk for under-and overhydration, both of which have detrimental effects (e.g. hypotension, pulmonary edema). Informal interviews with clinical affiliate CRNAs and lack of literature concerning CRNAs’ education of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery fluid management protocol suggests a knowledge deficit among these anesthesia providers. Adoption of an ERAS protocol for colorectal surgery entails implementing a goaldirected …
