School Personnel Perspectives On Supporting Teachers Of Students With Social-Emotional And Academic Needs, Ana Elisa Lee
School Personnel Perspectives On Supporting Teachers Of Students With Social-Emotional And Academic Needs, Ana Elisa Lee
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Thirty percent of elementary schools that serve underprivileged students in a Texas school district are considered low-performing according to state standards in the 2016 2017 school year. Little is known about the perspectives on the support teachers need while teaching students with high social-emotional and academic needs. The purpose of this general qualitative study was to examine perspectives on principal support for teachers who teach these populations. Data were collected through interviewing 9 teachers, 3 principals, 3 counselors, 3 instructional coaches, and 1 district academic leader. Social cognitive theory, role theory, and cognitive evaluation theory constituted the conceptual framework. Individual …
A Clinical Practice Guideline To Improve Education In The Heart Failure Population, Mailey L. Wilks
A Clinical Practice Guideline To Improve Education In The Heart Failure Population, Mailey L. Wilks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Managing heart failure patients in the outpatient setting can pose a challenge for nurses and health care staff due to the need to educate patients on self-care skills and management of disease. Several factors, including health literacy and numeracy, need to be considered when developing an education program for heart failure patients to promote self-care management. The purpose of this project was to provide nursing staff with a clinical practice guideline (CPG) that incorporated health and numeracy literacy assessment into an individualized education program. The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice (EBP) model, the situation-specific theory of heart failure (HF) self-care, …

Trends In Prevalence And Predictors Of Undernutrition Among Children In South Central, Monica Kabahimba Zikusooka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Undernutrition is a global public health challenge. In Somalia, undernutrition is chronic with the situation often graded for emergency response. The purpose of this study was to provide contextual evidence regarding trends of prevalence and predictors of undernutrition in South Central Somalia. Following the UNICEF conceptual framework of determinants of undernutrition, the study examined which individual, household, and society factors were associated with undernutrition. Using secondary data from cross-sectional nutritional surveys implemented by the Somalia Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit from 2007 to 2012, a sample of 75,756 and 60,856 children aged 6-59 months was used in analyzing trends …
Nursing Education To Prevent Resident Falls In Long-Term Care, Henrietta Aguwa
Nursing Education To Prevent Resident Falls In Long-Term Care, Henrietta Aguwa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Residents in nursing facilities are more prone to falls than those living in the community. Injuries resulting from falls impact residents, their families, and healthcare costs. The gap in nursing practice was the lack of a comprehensive fall-prevention program in a long-term care facility that had experienced high fall rates among residents. This project addressed whether an educational program using the American Medical Directors Association's clinical practice guideline and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths, & Injuries) toolkit for fall- prevention improved the self-efficacy of direct-care staff in preventing falls among residents in a …
Educating Staff Nurses For Successful Patient Discharge, Julie First-Williams
Educating Staff Nurses For Successful Patient Discharge, Julie First-Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The definition of a successful discharge is a discharge that results in patients successfully managing a chronic disease for at least 30 days without requiring an acute inpatient hospitalization. Many chronic disease readmissions are preventable. Successful discharge planning takes a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses who assess the discharge plan and provide additional education where needed. The purpose of this project was to determine staff nurses' understanding of their role in discharge education. Dorothea Orem's self-care deficit theory guided the project and root cause analysis was used in the development of the problem statements. Staff nurses (n=12) from evening and …

Post-Hurricane Sandy Coping Strategies And Resilience Factors Among People With Disabilities, Miriam Mukasa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
People with disabilities are likely to experience difficulties overcoming the impact of natural disasters. Few scholars have focused on this population's ability to recover and handle stress following a natural disaster. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe coping strategies and resilience factors that people with physical or mental disabilities used in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Resilience theory was used as the theoretical framework. Through face-to-face interviews, 10 persons with disabilities shared their experiences of coping and resilience. A lens of interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to identify emergent themes related to persons with disabilities' …
Impact Of Food Insecurity On The Management Of Illness In Wayne County, Ohio, Bernadette Coleen Paul
Impact Of Food Insecurity On The Management Of Illness In Wayne County, Ohio, Bernadette Coleen Paul
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The incidence of food insecurity coupled with poor management of illnesses poses a
public health challenge. Poor adherence to medication regimens is a contributor to poor
health outcomes, especially among the socioeconomically disadvantaged. Food insecurity
is a global health and nutrition problem that affects approximately 50 million people in
the United States. The number of food-insecure households in the United States has
increased by 12% since 1995, and so has the burden of management of illnesses. The cost
of healthcare has risen from 5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 1960 to 20% of
the GDP currently. This quantitative …
Discharge Phone Call On Unplanned Readmission Due To Chemotherapy Among Cancer Patients, Denise Angelo Moreno Prudencio
Discharge Phone Call On Unplanned Readmission Due To Chemotherapy Among Cancer Patients, Denise Angelo Moreno Prudencio
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The transition after hospitalization is a vulnerable period when adverse events like unplanned readmissions may occur. Unplanned readmissions with patients undergoing chemotherapy that are the result of gaps in communicating the discharge plan may be preventable. Several transitional care interventions have been explored, and one of these is the nurse discharge phone call. This project explored the effect of a nurse-led transitional discharge phone call within 30-days after hospital discharge on unplanned readmission due to chemotherapy among patients in the medical-oncology compared to patients without a nurse-led transitional discharge phone call. A nurse-led transitional discharge phone call was implemented within …

Effect Of Endothelial Progenitor Cell-Derived Exosomes On High Glucose And Hypoxia/ Reoxygenation-Induced Injury Of Astrocytes, Manasi Suchit Halurkar
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we tested the protective effects of EPC-EXs (endothelial progenitor cell derived exosomes) and miR-126 EPC-EXs (microRNA-126 EPC-EXs) on the astrocytes injured by HG (high glucose) plus H/R (hypoxia/reoxygenation) model. At first, we determined the concentration and time dependent uptake of EPC-EXs by astrocytes. It was also found that the EPC-EXs were uptaken via macropinocytosis, caveolin-dependent and clathrin-mediated pathways in astrocytes. Furthermore, the astrocyte cell line was injured through the HG + H/R model. EXs, isolated by ultracentrifugation from the EPC culture supernatant were co-incubated with the injured cells. It was found that EPC-EXs and miR-126 EPC-EXs decrease …

Bacterial symbionts are integral to the health and homeostasis of invertebrate hosts. Notably, members of the Rickettsiales genus Wolbachia influence several aspects of the fitness and evolution of their terrestrial hosts, but few analogous partnerships have been found in marine systems. We report here the genome, phylogenetics, and biogeography of a ubiquitous and novel Rickettsiales species that primarily associates with marine organisms. We previously showed that this bacterium was found in scleractinian corals, responds to nutrient exposure, and is associated with reduced host growth and increased mortality. This bacterium, like other Rickettsiales, has a reduced genome indicative of a parasitic …

Pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs) lack a universally accepted definition. Feeding disorders require comprehensive assessment and treatment of 4 closely related, complementary domains (medical, psychosocial, and feeding skill-based systems and associated nutritional complications). Previous diagnostic paradigms have, however, typically defined feeding disorders using the lens of a single professional discipline and fail to characterize associated functional limitations that are critical to plan appropriate interventions and improve quality of life. Using the framework of the World Health Organization International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, a unifying diagnostic term is proposed: “Pediatric Feeding Disorder” (PFD), defined as impaired oral intake that is …

The ongoing international migration from developing countries to developed ones has led to a large presence of Diaspora population in developed countries. Many of those well-educated and established professionals and businessmen have felt a need to give back to their home countries. The impact of Diaspora in their home country has been realized mainly in four different areas: economic development through remittance, investment and trade; intellectual development via knowledge transfer and knowledge application; social development through philanthropy and volunteerism; and political development via diplomacy, lobbying, awareness raising and political participation.
Diaspora giving back mechanisms have deployed various programs. Such programs …

The Effects Of Tumor Growth On Stress Response, Body Size, And Fat Content In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Reem Yassine
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Tumorous growth affects nearby healthy tissues, as seen in wasting disease experienced by cancer patients, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. We studied tumor growth in C.elegans, a microscopic worm that shares many genes with humans and has the ability to grow tumors in its reproductive system. To test whether tumors cause stress in nearby tissues, we used genetic crosses to create strains containing tumors and fluorescent-based stress reporters for the following physiological stresses: endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response (hsp-4p::GFP), heat shock (hsp-6.2p::GFP), and infection (irg-1p::GFP). We found that expression of …
The Biocultural Evolution Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Amanda Rielinger
The Biocultural Evolution Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Amanda Rielinger
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are described as abnonnal immune responses to the gastrointestinal microbiota. The etiology of IBD is unknown; however, it is associated with Western, industrialized societies. A better understanding of the origins and treatments of IBD can lead to improved health outcomes. This paper seeks to examine IBD from a cultural, environmental, and evolutionary perspective. The effects of cultural and environmental factors, such as diagnostic practices, diet, breastfeeding practices, antibiotic use, appendectomy, and environmental radiation exposure on the risk of developing IBD are discussed. The efficacy of various treatments for IBD …

Fragile Oceans, Synthetic Flotsam And Microbial Collaboration – Explorations In The Visual Communication Of The Plastic Crisis, Ivan Langesfeld
Pomona Senior Theses
Scientific evidence that the ocean plastic crisis is larger in scale and more sinister than previously thought continues to mount, but the rate of plastic production is only rising. What will it take to decisively turn the tide against plastic? We need scientists, politicians, and industry changemakers to continue producing knowledge and positive change in the industry, but we need to go further still. This thesis explores art as an alternative visual communication strategy with the capacity to encourage curiosity, empathy, and positive engagement with the issue of ocean plastics. The series of work explores bacterial bioluminescence as an artistic …

Symbiosis has evolved between a diversity of invertebrate taxa and chemosynthetic bacterial lineages. At the broadest level, these symbioses share primary function: the bacterial symbionts use the energy harnessed from the oxidation of reduced chemicals to power the fixation of inorganic carbon and/or other nutrients, providing the bulk of host nutrition. However, it is unclear to what extent the ecological niche of the host species is influenced by differences in symbiont traits, particularly those involved in chemoautotrophic function and interaction with the geochemical environment. Hydrothermal vents in the Lau Basin (Tonga) are home to four morphologically and physiologically similar snail …
Encouraging Food Safety Standard Negotiations In The One-Belt-One-Road Initiative, Yi Seul Kim
Encouraging Food Safety Standard Negotiations In The One-Belt-One-Road Initiative, Yi Seul Kim
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
Participation and attendance in food safety negotiations such as Codex meetings are of critical importance. Common problems have existed throughout history in the area of food safety standards and their formulation regulations. First, there is a lack of interest by the public. Second, the public becomes interested only after a food safety crisis. Consequences are two-fold: with lack of public interest, governments often do not allocate enough budget and resources. Then, when the government turns to face the problem with a sudden spike in public interest, it is often too late. The situation becomes more of a crisis management, rather …

A Biblical Overview Of The Concept Of Fruit With An Emphasis On The "Fruit Of The Spirit" In Galatians 5, Timothy Selinger
Master's Theses
Problem
The topic of the Holy Spirit and especially the meaning of "being filled with the Spirit" is a relevant topic. Generally, it is thought to be related to miracles, healings, and explosive church growth among Adventists or to speaking in tongues and other manifestations, especially among Charismatic Christians. Few identify the fullness of the Spirit with holiness of character. In Paul, the presence of the Spirit in the life of the believer results in the presence of the "fruit of the Spirit" (Gal 5:22). Just like an apple tree produces apples, a person filled with the Spirit will produce …

The Effects Of A Ketone Body On Synaptic Transmission, Alexandra Elizabeth Stanback
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
The ketogenic diet is commonly used to control epilepsy, especially in cases when medications cannot. The diet typically consists of high fat, low carb, and adequate protein and produces a metabolite called acetoacetate. Seizure activity is characterized by glutamate excitotoxicity and therefore glutamate regulation is a point of research for control of these disorders. Acetoacetate is heavily implicated as the primary molecule responsible for decreasing glutamate in the synapse; it is believed that acetoacetate interferes with the transport of glutamate into the synaptic vesicles. The effects on synaptic transmission at glutamatergic synapses was studied in relation to the ketogenic diet …

Theses and Dissertations--Communication
The expansion of YouTube into the mainstream media and its place as the second most-used website in the world makes it a prime place for health information seeking. However, content can be created and uploaded by anyone and thus, the threat of misinformation on YouTube is high. Medical researchers have established that videos created by health professionals on YouTube promote accurate information whereas videos by non-professionals promote generally inaccurate or misleading information. Yet, videos created by non-professionals have more views and higher relevance rankings on YouTube. To begin to understand this phenomenon, a descriptive study is used to lay a …

Hypoxia-Inducible Factor (HIF)-1 is a transcription factor that plays the key role in response to low oxygen concentrations, or hypoxia. Activation of the HIF-1 pathway is not only crucial for normal tissue development and function, but also involved in disease progression, such as cancer. Cancer cells proliferate rapidly in solid tumors, and thus, solid tumors consume much more oxygen and nutrients than normal tissue and generate oxygen tension. It is well established that oxygen tension in solid tumor tissue induces the aberrant activation of the HIF-1 pathway, and subsequently promotes angiogenesis and tumor progression. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease …
