Training Friends And Overseas Relief: The Friends Ambulance Unit And The Friends Relief Service, 1939 To 1948, Nerissa Kalee Aksamit
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This transnational case study investigates the establishment and development of training programs by two British faith-based voluntary relief organizations, the Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) and the Friends Relief Service (FRS), during the Second World War and explores the implementation of learned skills by members of those organizations working during the immediate postwar period in the British Occupation Zone in Germany. It contributes new perspectives to scholarship on humanitarianism as it highlights both the continuities and ruptures in the approaches to and practices of humanitarian aid. It identifies the Quaker traditions that shaped the work of the FAU and FRS—particularly the …

he use of entomological specimens as a source of forensic DNA evidence has been studied since the late 20th century. Currently as it stands, to preserve both the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI) and DNA evidence within fly larvae, two standards of preservation exist. For mPMI, the use of hot water kill with near-boiling water is used to fix larvae size for accurate age estimation. For DNA evidence, the standard technique of preservation is submersion in 70% ethanol. To help reduce the number of standard preservation techniques for practitioners, this study assessed the feasibility of the hot water kill preservation technique …
The Acute Effect Of Propanil On Reproductive Hormones, Ovarian Gene Expression And Splenic Cells In C57bl/6 Female Mice, Malia Danielle Berg
The Acute Effect Of Propanil On Reproductive Hormones, Ovarian Gene Expression And Splenic Cells In C57bl/6 Female Mice, Malia Danielle Berg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Earlier evidence indicates exposure to propanil, a post-emergent herbicide used on rice and wheat fields, increases the number of antibody-secreting cells (ASC) in the spleen of mice after immunization with heat-killed Streptococcus pneumoniae (HKSP, 2x108 CFU). Interestingly, an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is required for this immune response assessed on day 7-10 after immunization in female mice. Hence, an overarching premise is that propanil arbitrates the connection between the reproductive and immune system by altering the concentration of hormones involved in the HPG axis, which may then affect the populations of splenic cells. Hypotheses were tested with C57Bl/6 female …
A Rare Presentation Of Cardiac Aspergilloma In An Immunocompetent Host: Case Report And Literature Review, Abdullah M. Pervaiz, Salman A. Bangash, Raheel Akhtar, Zain Wahab, Hyder Bangash
A Rare Presentation Of Cardiac Aspergilloma In An Immunocompetent Host: Case Report And Literature Review, Abdullah M. Pervaiz, Salman A. Bangash, Raheel Akhtar, Zain Wahab, Hyder Bangash
School of Medicine Publications
Cardiac aspergilloma is exceptionally rare with only a handful of cases reported and majority of them being in immunocompromised patients. Here, we present a case of cardiac aspergilloma involving the right and left ventricle in an immunocompetent patient that initially presented with acute limb ischemia. He was later found to have a cardiac mass with histopathological diagnosis confirming Aspergillus species. Despite aggressive medical and surgical interventions, the patient had an unfavorable outcome due to low suspicion of invasive fungal endocarditis given his immunocompetent status. Cardiac aspergilloma should remain in the differential diagnosis of immunocompetent patients as early clinical suspicion will …

The MS is prevalent in Mexican Americans (MAs) and is projected to increase. It is important therefore to better understand its genetic and environmental determinants. We hypothesized that the MS reflects dysfunction in important biological systems. To evaluate this concept, we analyzed gene expression data for the adaptive-immune, innate-immune, and hemostasis systems in relation to the MS from a study on MAs of San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.

Salivary Total Immunoglobulin G As A Surrogate Marker Of Oral Immune Activity In Salivary Bioscience Research, Jenna L. Riis, Crystal I. Bryce, John L. Stebbins, Douglas A. Granger
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The integration of salivary biomeasures in biobehavioral, psychophysiological, and clinical research has greatly expanded our ability to study the biopsychosocial processes underlying health. Much of this research, however, has failed to adequately assess and adjust for the impact of oral immune activity on salivary biomeasure concentrations and associations with serum levels. Aiming to improve the validity and reliability of salivary biomeasure data, we examine salivary total Immunoglobulin G (IgG) as a potential surrogate marker of oral inflammation and immune activity. During a single study visit in Baltimore, Maryland, healthy young adult participants provided matched blood and saliva samples (N …
Truth Be Told: Redefining Relationships Through Indigenous Research, Deborah Mcgregor
Truth Be Told: Redefining Relationships Through Indigenous Research, Deborah Mcgregor
Articles & Book Chapters
The recently released report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) contains recommendations which seek to deconstruct the highly colonial relationship between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian state. This chapter explores how the TRC’s findings might be applied in transforming the theory and practice of academic research as part of renewing and re-defining relationships between Indigenous peoples and broader Canadian society. I will address the fundamental bias that exists in the historical and contemporary scholarship that either explicitly or implicitly frames Indigenous peoples as “problems” to be solved.
Purchasing Health? The Promise And Limits Of Public Health Insurance, Kristen Underhill
Purchasing Health? The Promise And Limits Of Public Health Insurance, Kristen Underhill
Faculty Scholarship
The 2010s have been a momentous decade for Medicaid. With enrollment of over seventy-two million people (19% of the country’s population), Medicaid is the nation’s largest public health insurance program, and it is the primary or sole source of health insurance for vulnerable groups such as low-income children and pregnant women, adults with disabilities, and people in need of long-term care. Since 2014, the pendulum of Medicaid policy has swung from an unprecedented expansion of coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), toward more recent federal regulations and state policy innovations that are instead predicted to limit uptake of benefits. …

Commercial Speech Protection As Consumer Protection, Felix T. Wu
Commercial Speech Protection As Consumer Protection, Felix T. Wu
Articles
The Supreme Court has long said that “the extension of First Amendment protection to commercial speech is justified principally by the value to consumers of the information such speech provides.” In other words, consumers—the recipients or listeners of commercial speech—are the ones the doctrine is meant to protect. In previous work, I explored the implications of taking this view seriously in three contexts: compelled speech, speech among commercial entities, and unwanted marketing. In each of those contexts, adopting a listener-oriented approach leads to the conclusion that many forms of commercial speech regulation should receive far less First Amendment scrutiny than …
Soft Law Often Should Be Permitted To Bind Agency Staff, Peter L. Strauss
Soft Law Often Should Be Permitted To Bind Agency Staff, Peter L. Strauss
Faculty Scholarship
For an event honoring the scholarship of Professor Bill Funk, another contributor to this on-line symposium, I have written an essay, Domesticating Guidance, summarizing my thinking about the use and misuse of agency guidance documents. No one doubts that that the soft law of guidance documents, which do not require notice and comment under the APA, should not veer into the hard law of legislative rules, which generally do require that procedure. Unfortunate confusion, though, arises from lower court concerns that purported guidance documents may be “binding in practice” — thus, they reason, functionally, an invalid legislative rule that …
Diversity Of Nitrogen-Fixing Symbionts Of Chamaecrista Fasciculata (Partridge Pea) Across Variable Soils, Hanna E. Dorman, Lisa E. Wallace
Diversity Of Nitrogen-Fixing Symbionts Of Chamaecrista Fasciculata (Partridge Pea) Across Variable Soils, Hanna E. Dorman, Lisa E. Wallace
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We evaluated whether geographic distance and soil characteristics influence genetic structure of nitrogen-fixing bacterial symbionts associated with the host plant Chamaecrista fasciculata (Partridge Pea). We tested phylogeographic clustering and associations between genetic distance, geographic distance, and soil variables using sequences of 2 bacterial genes and soil chemistry across 23 sites in Mississippi. We identified rhizobia isolated from Partridge Pea as Bradyrhizobium. We detected significant genetic structure at a regional level, and determined that rhizobia within each region were more phylogenetically related than expected. Significant correlation between genetic distance and distances based on soil chemistry suggests environmental influences on rhizobia …
Food Insecurity And Children: How Food Insecurity Affects Mental Health In Children, Brianna L. Jordan
Food Insecurity And Children: How Food Insecurity Affects Mental Health In Children, Brianna L. Jordan
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Being without the financial means to have reliable access to enough food to sustain members of a household is known as Food Insecurity (FI; Gundersen, 2013). Previous research has linked FI to obesity and depression (Adams, Grummer-Strawn, & Chavez, 2003; Bronte-Tinkew, Zaslow, Capps, Horowitz, & Mcnamara, 2007; Huddleston-Casas, Charnigo, & Simmons, 2009; Kim & Frongillo, 2007). Although there have been findings about FI being related to depression and obesity, little research has used African Americans; even less research has used young adolescents as the target population. This study had five aims: 1) Observe the impact of FI on health, 2) …
Examining The Influence Of The Leader In Me On School Grades, Jennifer Lynn Wright
Examining The Influence Of The Leader In Me On School Grades, Jennifer Lynn Wright
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
School leaders face increasing demands related to student achievement. These demands involve annual data reporting related to overall student, school, and district success. In Florida, this accountability and transparency requirement is addressed through an annual school grading system. It is essential that leaders utilize successful programs that directly influence positive student outcomes and demonstrate high quality education. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of a youth leadership development program, specifically The Leader in Me (TLIM) program, on school grades. Based on data obtained from 16 public elementary schools across Florida, a repeated measures ANCOVA analysis revealed …
Behavioral Assessment Of Social Structure And Guest Provisioning Program Participation Of Zoo-Housed Giraffes (Giraffa Camelopardalis) Under Varying Spatial Availability., Fatima Ramis
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Close encounters with animals are considered integral for visitors and are trademark components of traditional educational engagement in zoological parks. As capacity for up-close encounters continue to increase with a simultaneous development in the field of animal welfare science, behavioral assessments on the role of common close encounters is timely. Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) visitor feeding programs are established in approximately 57% of institutions accredited by Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Due to successful breeding and capacity building for zoological giraffe populations, this percentage will likely continue to increase. There is a great deal of variation in the environmental …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The influence of microbial factors on adverse perinatal outcomes has become the focal point of recent investigations, with particular interest in the role of the microbiome and probiotic interventions. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and critique the most recent evidence about these factors as they relate to pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia (PEC), preterm birth (PTB), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched for articles published in English in the last 10 years with the concepts of the microbiome, probiotics, and PEC, PTB, or GDM. Forty-nine articles were …
Do Initiators Matter In Social Marketing? Understanding Characteristics And Particularities Of Social Marketing Campaigns Initiated By Different Agents, Aleksandra Lisinska
Do Initiators Matter In Social Marketing? Understanding Characteristics And Particularities Of Social Marketing Campaigns Initiated By Different Agents, Aleksandra Lisinska
SPNHA Review
This research paper explores the concept of social marketing by discussing different definitions and characteristics of the term, and by investigating the influence of initiators on social marketing campaigns. The aim of this paper is to answer the question of whether or not the initiators matter in social marketing. In order to answer this question, an extensive literature review was conducted to gain a general understanding of the issues at hand. Furthermore, six case studies were analyzed to illustrate differences and similarities between campaigns initiated by different types of organizations, as well as to identify specificities of each initiator group. …

Indirect methods for conducting faunal inventories present great promise, and genomic inventories derived from environmental sources (eDNA) are improving. Invertebrate ingested DNA (iDNA) from terrestrial leeches in the family Haemadipsidae has shown potential for surveying vertebrates and biodiversity monitoring in protected areas. Here we present an initial, and critical, evaluation of the limitations and biases of current iDNA protocols for biodiversity monitoring using both standard and NGS barcoding approaches. Key findings include the need for taxon relevant multi-locus markers and reference databases. In particular, the limitations of available reference databases have profound potential to mislead and bias eDNA and iDNA …

Problem and Purpose
Much research has been done in past years on the topic of student achievement, with most of those studies focusing on factors that contribute to student achievement. Little, or no research has been done, especially in the country of Zambia, that has focused on the relationship between leadership style, teacher self-efficacy, and the extent to which these constructs impact student achievement. This study explored the school principals' leadership style, teacher self-efficacy, and the extent to which these factors contribute to student achievement in Chikankata District, Zambia. The Ministry of Education in Zambia and other educators, especially those …
