Transitional Justice In Housing Injustice: The Case Of Housing Rights Violations Within Settler Democracies, Manal Totry-Jubran
Transitional Justice In Housing Injustice: The Case Of Housing Rights Violations Within Settler Democracies, Manal Totry-Jubran
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The right to housing is recognized by international human rights treaties as an integral part of the right to an adequate standard of living. Many states have ratified these treaties and incorporated protection of some aspects of housing rights into their constitutions and domestic legislation. Other states have not enacted any legislation in recognition of housing rights, but they provide judicial remedies for violations of rights. Despite that, domestic and international reports indicate that housing rights are constantly being violated in countries across the world at different levels.
This Article focuses on housing rights violations within "settler democracies." Such countries …

While much effort has been put into understanding vitellogenesis in insects and other organisms, much less is known of this process in ticks. There are several steps that facilitate yolk formation in developing oocytes of which the vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is a key component. The tick VgR binds vitellogenin (Vg) circulating in the hemolymph to initiate receptor-mediated endocytosis and its transformation into vitellin (Vn). The conversion of Vg into Vn, the final form of the yolk protein, occurs inside oocytes of the female tick ovary. Vn is critical to tick embryos since it serves as the nutritional source for their …

The Effects Of Group And Individual Based Physical Activity On Mood In Children With Intellectual Disabilities, Bunlong Hong
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This case study examines the effect of group-based and individual-based physical activity participation on mood in individuals with disabilities. The participant was age 14 during the study and diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The participant engaged in individual and group based physical activities as part of a one week adapted physical activity program. Mood states were reported using the Intellectual Disability Mood Scale [IDMS] (Argus, Terry, Bramston, & Dinsdale, 2004), which is adapted from the Profile of Mood States [POMS] (Droppleman, Lorr, & McNair, 1992). The participant exhibited the iceberg profile - characterized by above average mood scores in …
Effects Of A Physical Activity Educational Program On Parents Self-Efficacy For Facilitating Independent Physical Activity For Their Children With Disabilities, Dahnika Y. Romero
Effects Of A Physical Activity Educational Program On Parents Self-Efficacy For Facilitating Independent Physical Activity For Their Children With Disabilities, Dahnika Y. Romero
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Children and youth with disabilities have a higher risk of obesity than typically developing peers in part due to low physical activity levels. Increasing physical activity can increase children's’ health related quality of life, psychological well-being, and contribute to the prevention or delay of chronic diseases. One way to increase physical activity is by getting parents involved as facilitators of activity but they do not always have the skills to do so. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 5-session physical activity educational program on parental self-efficacy for facilitating independent physical activity for their …

Achromatic Plumage Patch Quality: Internal Organ And Skeletal Correlates In Aleutian Cackling Geese (Branta Hutchinsii Leucopareia), Matthew D. Delgado
Achromatic Plumage Patch Quality: Internal Organ And Skeletal Correlates In Aleutian Cackling Geese (Branta Hutchinsii Leucopareia), Matthew D. Delgado
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Sexual selection theory predicts unique plumage patches signaling quality or status evolve via mate-choice and competition for mates. A growing body of research supports evidence that achromatic plumage patches may act as honest indicators of quality. Irregularities in these patches are attributed to an individual’s phenotypic and genotypic quality as well as environmental wear and tear. Aleutian cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii leucopareia) display achromatic plumage patches on their heads and necks, which may signal information about an individual’s attributes. I tested the honest advertisement and status signaling hypotheses by determining whether size and irregularities in the transition between …

Student Works (2010-2019)
Introduction Malaysia is rapidly advancing towards the status of an ageing nation. Demographic transitions pose major challenges for health care providers in planning and providing effective and holistic health care to institutionalized older people. Health authorities are experiencing an increasing public health problem; the growing burden of oral diseases among older people. The concept of oral health has evolved from just having healthy teeth. Holistic oral health includes excellent oral function which is the ability to smile, speak, swallow and chew competently, and without pain; bringing about improvement in general health and increased self-esteem. However, in the present scenario, the …

Thompson, David Griffin, Megan Saunders, Christin Sawstrom, Richard O'Rorke, Miao Wang, Jason P. Landrum, Andrew Jeffs
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Anticyclonic (warm-core) mesoscale eddies (WCEs) in the Eastern Indian Ocean carry higher surface chlorophyll signatures than cyclonic (cold-core) eddies (CCEs). Paradoxically, WCEs host rock lobster larvae (phyllosomas) with lower lipid stores and protein reserves than phyllosomas in CCEs, suggesting a poorer nutritional status. We assess primary productivity and zooplankton isotopic data from eight eddies across four research voyages (2003–2011) to determine how this contradiction might occur. We find that WCEs and CCEs are equally productive per unit chlorophyll a, but depth-integrated primary production (PP) is greater in eddies with shallower mixed layers (MLs), especially in CCEs. MLs tend to be …

Role Of Lactic Acidosis As A Mediator Of Sprint-Mediated Nausea, Robert J. Merrells, Ashely J. Cripps, Paola T. Chivers, Paul A. Fournier
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between nausea level and lactic acidosis during recovery from sprinting. In all, 13 recreationally active males completed a 60 s bout of maximal intensity cycling. Prior to and for 45 min following exercise, blood pH, pCO2, and lactate levels were measured together with nausea. In response to sprinting, nausea, lactate, and H+ concentrations increased and remained elevated for at least 10 min (p < .001), whereas pCO2 increased only transiently (p < .001) before falling below pre‐exercise levels (p < .001), with all these variables returning toward pre‐exercise levels during recovery. Both measures of nausea adopted for analyses (nausea profile, NP; visual analogue scale, VAS), demonstrated significant repeated measures correlation (rmcorr) post‐exercise between nausea and plasma lactate (VAS and NPrrm> 0.595, p < .0001) and H+ concentrations (VAS and NPrrm> 0.689, p < .0001), but an inconsistent relationship with pCO2 (VAS rrm = …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
We investigated the effect of caffeine ingestion combined with a 2-wk sprint interval training (SIT) on training-induced reductions in body adiposity. Twenty physically-active men ingested either 5 mg/kg of cellulose as a placebo (PLA, n=10) or 5 mg/kg of caffeine (CAF, n=10) 60 min before each SIT session (13×30 s sprint/15 s of rest). Body mass and skinfold thickness were measured pre- and post-training. Energy expenditure was measured at rest, during exercise, and 45 min after exercise in the first SIT session. Body fat was similar between PLA and CAF groups at pre-training (P>0.05). However, there was a significant …

A Brief History Of Nutritional Rickets, Benjamin J. Wheeler, Anne Marie E. Snoddy, Craig Munns, Peter Simm, Aris Siafarikas, Craig Jefferies
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Since first described almost a century ago, vitamin D preparations have been successfully used as a public health intervention to prevent nutritional rickets. In this manuscript, we document the periods in history when nutritional rickets was described, examine early efforts to understand its etiology and the steps taken to treat and prevent it. We will also highlight that despite the wealth of historical data and multiple preventative strategies, nutritional rickets remains a significant public health disorder. Nutritional rickets has both skeletal and extraskeletal manifestations. While the skeletal manifestations are the most recognized features, it is the extraskeletal complications, hypocalcaemic seizure …

Considerations When Assessing Endurance In Combat Sport Athletes, Oliver R. Barley, Dale W. Chapman, Stuart N. Guppy, Chris R. Abbiss
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Combat sports encompass a range of sports, each involving physical combat between participants. Such sports are unique, with competitive success influenced by a diverse range of physical characteristics. Effectively identifying and evaluating each characteristic is essential for athletes and support staff alike. Previous research investigating the relationship between combat sports performance and measures of strength and power is robust. However, research investigating the relationship between combat sports performance and assessments of endurance is less conclusive. As a physical characteristic, endurance is complex and influenced by multiple factors including mechanical efficiency, maximal aerobic capacity, metabolic thresholds, and anaerobic capacities. To assess …

There is heterogeneity in the observed VO2peak response to similar exercise training, and different exercise approaches produce variable degrees of exercise response (trainability). The aim of this study was to combine data from different laboratories to compare VO2peak trainability between various volumes of interval training and Moderate Intensity Continuous Training (MICT). For interval training, volumes were classified by the duration of total interval time. High-volume High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) included studies that had participants complete more than 15 min of high intensity efforts per session. Low-volume HIIT/Sprint Interval Training (SIT) included studies using less than 15 min …

In Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), weaning is associated with environmentally acquired and inflammation-associated enteric disorders. Dietary intake of high amylose maize starch (HAMS) can promote commensal fermentative bacteria and drive the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). By stabilizing commensal gut microbiology, and stimulating the production of anti-inflammatory metabolites, HAMS supplementation might therefore influence enteric health. However, the extent to which the gut microbiota of LMIC infants are capable of fermenting HAMS is unclear. We assessed the capacity of the fecal microbiota from pre-weaning and weaning Malawian infants to ferment HAMS and produce SCFAs using an in vitro …
Being A Bad Vegan, Lelia Green
Being A Bad Vegan, Lelia Green
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
According to The Betoota Advocate (Parker), a CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) paper has recently established that “it takes roughly seven minutes on average for a vegan to tell you that they’re vegan” (qtd. in Harrington et al. 135). For such a statement to have currency as a joke means that it is grounded in a shared experience of being vegan on the one hand, and of encountering vegans on the other. Why should vegans feel such a need to justify themselves? I recognise the observation as being true of me, and this article is one way to …
Reducing The Attainment Gap For Low Socio Economic Status Students: Concurrent Enrollment Program Evaluation Colorado Mountain College, Jeremiah Fernandez Johnson
Reducing The Attainment Gap For Low Socio Economic Status Students: Concurrent Enrollment Program Evaluation Colorado Mountain College, Jeremiah Fernandez Johnson
Higher Education: Doctoral Research Projects
A gap in college degree attainment is growing in the United States as college tuition and fees have drastically increased creating many barriers for students in low socio economic status (SES) families. These barriers are just the beginning in the many hurdles low SES students face in entering a college pathway and persisting to completing certificates or bachelor’s degrees. The state of Colorado has addressed this equity gap in higher education by creating a state wide initiative they have called Colorado Rises. This initiative is centered on increasing college completion statewide to 66% by 2025. In order to achieve this …
