This study examined glucose and lipid marker responses following a three-week, ad libitum low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCHF; approximately 70 percent of total calories from fat, less than 50 grams per day of net carbohydrates) versus the habitual mixed macronutrient diet (HMD) of eight middle-aged, trained male runners (40 plus or minus 10 years; VO2 peak = 49 plus or minus 4 milliliters per kilogram per minute). Blood was drawn at 0600 from an antecubital vein after an overnight fast under conditions of no exercise or heat stress (NEXH; 48 hours of restriction from intense exercise) or 24 hours after exercise …

The purpose of this applied action research study was to close the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged (ED) students and their non-disadvantaged peers (non-Ed) through the implementation of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system of processes. This study utilizes both quantitative and qualitative data to answer four core research questions. While the initial implementation of the plan failed to attain the targeted goal of closing the achievement, there were positive indicators for future success. Adults living in food insecure households consume fewer fruits and vegetables than adults living in food secure households (Hanson & Connor, 2014). The purpose of this study was to examine differences in fruit and vegetable behaviors (intakes; perceptions) of parents of elementary school children by food security status (food secure compared to food insecure; fully food secure compared to not fully food secure) in rural, Appalachian Mississippi. Introduction: College students experience food insecurity (FI) at higher rates than the U.S. adult population. Food insecurity among college students is frequently associated with several sociodemographic factors; limited social support and coping skills; poor mental and physical health; and poor academic outcomes. Three herbicide formulations, Roundup® Ready to Use Weed and Grass Killer, Bayer Advanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns and Pure 20% Vinegar Solution were directly applied to eggs of four species of butterflies, Danaus plexippus, Papilio cresphontes, Papilio polyxenes and Papilio troilus. Roundup and Bayer Advanced containing 2,4-D, mecoprop-p and dicamba significantly reduced hatch success in all four species. Lethal and sublethal effects of these herbicides on the earthworm, Eisenia andrei, was also examined. Direct contact by E. andrei with a heavy dose of the herbicides applied to tops of soil 24 hours prior was lethal to earthworms. …

Haemonchus contortus is a hematophagous, gastrointestinal parasite affecting small ruminants. Parasitism by H. contortus is the greatest concern of sheep producers in the United States and accounts for billions of dollars in economic loss worldwide. However, different breeds of sheep display differences n natural resistance to H. contortus. Negative attitudes of health professionals towards patients with SUD are common and contribute to suboptimal health care for this marginalized group of patients (Van-Boekel, Brouwers, Van-Weeghel & Garretson, 2013).

Objectives

Promoting empathy in the Emergency Department (ED) has the potential to increase nursing staff’s awareness of their attitudes and perceptions toward patients with SUD, thereby decreasing the stigma associated with addiction and improving patient care and patient outcomes. The overall focus of this thesis is on separating and utilizing fractions and co-products from food manufacturing as functional ingredients. In this study, we modified reinforced clostridial medium (RCM) to selectively enumerate and isolate Lactobacillus bulgaricus, a probiotic and an important starter culture in the dairy industry. The disparity in the reported carbohydrate fermentation pattern of L. bulgaricus was used to develop a growth medium not only selective for L. bulgaricus but significantly inhibitory to the growth of other lactic acid bacteria. A recently modified RCM (mRCM) was optimized for this study by the addition of 0.5% fructose, 0.5% dextrose, 1% maltose and 0.25% sodium pyruvate while replacing lactose as a carbohydrate source. Purpose: The greatest challenge in treating Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is disease recurrence, which occurs in about 20% of patients, usually within 30 days of treatment cessation. We sought to identify independent predictors of first recurrence among a national cohort of veterans with CDI.

Methods: We conducted a case-control study among acute and long-term care Veterans Affairs (VA) inpatients and outpatients with a first CDI episode (positive stool sample for C. difficile toxin[s] and receipt of at least 2 days of CDI treatment) between 2010 and 2014. Objective The hippocampus (Hc) is essential for memory and vulnerable to the sequelae of premature birth. Relationships between subcomponents of the Hc and memory performance have been documented in adults. Yet little is known about the generalization of these findings to young children, whether term or preterm-born. This tripartite investigation focused on Hc subregion and subfield volumes, a potential latent construct for episodic memory, and the relationship between Hc volume and memory performance across birth weight (BW) and gestational age (GA).

Objective: To measure the association between phenotypic drug resistance and the risk of tuberculosis infection and disease among household contacts of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Setting: 106 district health centers in Lima, Peru between September 2009 and September 2012.

Design: Prospective cohort study.

Participants: 10 160 household contacts of 3339 index patients with tuberculosis were classified on the basis of the drug resistance profile of the patient: 6189 were exposed to drug susceptible strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, 1659 to strains resistant to isoniazid or rifampicin, and 1541 to strains that were multidrug resistant (resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin).

Objective: The objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not lifitegrast 5.0% ophthalmic solution is effective in improving eye dryness and safe, in terms of ocular adverse effects, in adults 18 years or older with dry eye disease (DED).

Study Design: Systematic review of three primary double-blinded, randomized placebocontrolled trials that were published in peer-reviewed journals between 2014-2017.

Central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) manifests as tonic-clonic seizures and is a limitation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), as well as of recreational and technical diving associated with elevated partial pressure of oxygen. A previous study showed that ketone ester (1,3-butanediol acetoacetate diester, KE) administration delayed latency to seizures (LS) in 3-month-old Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. This study explores the effect of exogenous ketone supplements in additional dosages and formulations on CNS-OT seizures in 18 months old SD rats, an age group correlating to human middle age. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's are the main causes of age-related dementia. These diseases can be due to neuronal cell death and/or impairment of neurite outgrowth. Giant oyster mushroom (GOM), Pleurotus giganteus, is used as a nootropic to improve cognitive function. GOM can also be used to prevent the onset of dementia. The underlying mechanism behind the medicinal property of GOM is unclear. Previous studies have shown that GOM has a high concentration of uridine. Chickpea our, mainly from non-sprouted chickpeas, serves as an alternative to wheat ours. Sprouting legumes may improve antioxidant potential, but sensory effects of sprouting chickpeas for our are largely unknown. This study evaluated sensory effects of up to 40% substitution of Sprouted Chickpea Flour (SCF) and Non-Sprouted Chickpea Flour (NSCF) in pasta. Total phenolics and antioxidant potential (as Trolox equivalency) of the ours were also assessed. Results showed phenolic contents and antioxidant potential were signi cantly higher in SCF than NSCF. There are over 3 million seasonal and migrant farmworkers in the U.S. agricultural industry with a significant percentage of farmworkers documented or native to the United States. Migrant farmworkers live below the federal poverty levels at high rates and experience low health care access and utilization. Guided by the fundamental cause theory, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of migrant farmworkers and identify the factors impacting their health care access and utilization.
