Roles Of Plant Cbl?Cipk Systems In Abiotic Stress Responses, Shilian Huang, Shaofeng Jiang, Junsong Liang, Miao Chen

Turkish Journal of Botany

Plants evolved from long-term adaptation to form regulatory mechanisms of perception, transduction, and response to stresses. The CBL?CIPK signaling system is a basic calcium sensor that plays an important role in sensing adverse environmental stimuli. CBLs can perceive and bind Ca2+ under adversity and then specifically interact with CIPKs. The activated CBL?CIPK complex phosphorylates downstream target proteins (such as ion channels and transporters), or regulates transcription factors and stress responsive genes. Important progress has been made in the study of CBL?CIPK signaling pathways in response to high salt, low N, low K, high Mg, and high pH. This review summarizes …

Effects Of Salicylic Acid And Heat Acclimation On Thermotolerance And Withanolide Accumulation Under High Temperature Stress In The Cape Gooseberry (Physalisperuviana L.), Günce Şahi̇n

Turkish Journal of Botany

The adverse effects of high temperature stress can be alleviated by thermotolerance induced by exogenous application of plant growth regulators or by gradual application of temperature stress. Physalis peruviana L., commonly known as the Cape gooseberry, is a source of a variety of phytocompounds such as withanolides (withanone, withaferin A, and withanolide A). These withanolides are potentially high-value drug candidates because of their various pharmacological properties. The production of withanolides via traditional agriculture is commercially inadequate. In the present study, elicitation strategies were employed to improve the crop's thermotolerance and accumulation of withanolides. For these purposes, the effects of heat …

Of Course, Humans Are Not Unique!, Bernard Wallner

Animal Sentience

This commentary focuses on the question of the uniqueness of humans in comparison to other species and on the false assumption that single arguments support logical conclusions. Comparative analysis of genetic data in humans and nonhuman primates regarding the dopaminergic system of the subcortical mesolimbic reward system highlights homologous traits shared and modified by the process of evolution. Such an analytical approach is more relevant than claims of uniqueness.

Ann-Assisted Forecasting Of Adsorption Efficiency To Remove Heavy Metals, Magdi Buaisha, Şazi̇ye Balku, Şeni̇z Özalp Yaman

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In wastewater treatment, scientific and practical models utilizing numerical computational techniques such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) can significantly help to improve the process as a whole through adsorption systems. In the modeling of the adsorption efficiency for heavy metals from wastewater, some kinetic models have been used such as pseudo first-order and second-order. The present work develops an ANN model to forecast the adsorption efficiency of heavy metals such as zinc, nickel, and copper by extracting experimental data from three case studies. To do this, we apply trial-and-error to find the most ideal ANN settings, the efficiency of which …

Differences In Soil Bacterial Diversity After Treatment With Benzyl Isothiocyanate, An Allelopathic Secondary Metabolite Derivative Of Alliaria Petiolata (Garlic Mustard), Samantha Pagel

Undergraduate Student Research

The species, Alliaria petiolata (garlic mustard), has overtaken the understory of North American forests for over a century, but how the plant has become invasively successful is not well understood. There is some indication that the secretion and breakdown of its allelopathic metabolic compounds, known as glucosinolates, contribute to its success. Benzyl isothiocyanate, an end product of garlic mustard glucosinolate breakdown, has been found in previous studies to inhibit seed germination and the growth of certain mycorrhizal fungi species. Soil bacterial communities, in addition to fungi, play an important role in the surrounding abiotic and biotic environment. This study aims …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative, administered by USDA-NIFA, is the major federal funder of organic agricultural research. Analysis of 733 publications produced during the initiative’s first five years explored the dissemination of this research, and accessibility to and preservation of the publications. Publications associated with conferences (e.g., abstracts) were most numerous (36%). Many publications (69%) were openly accessible online in 2017 but fewer than 10% of these appeared in a stable digital repository. In four of the eight publication categories, access disappeared over time. No program exists to systematically collect and preserve these outputs of organic agricultural research. …
