Universal Cash And Crime, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi Apr 2019

Universal Cash And Crime, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Reports

We estimate the effects of universal cash transfers on crime from Alaska’s Permanent Fund Dividend, an annual lump-sum payment to all Alaska residents. We find a 14% increase in substance-abuse incidents the day after the payment and a 10% increase over the following four weeks. This is partially offset by a 8% decrease in property crime, with no changes in violent crimes. On an annual basis, however, changes in criminal activity from the payment are small. Estimated costs comprise a very small portion of the total payment, suggesting that crime-related concerns of a universal cash transfer program may be unwarranted.

Universal Cash Transfers Reduce Childhood Obesity Rates, Brett Watson, Matthew Reimer, Mouhcine Guettabi

ISER Reports

We evaluate the impact of universal income on childhood obesity. While the goals of implementing universal income are many, its influence on childhood obesity is of particular interest given the growing obesity epidemic and its future threat to global public health. We use evidence from Alaska’s universal income program, the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD), which has provided annual, unconditional, and universal income to Alaskan residents for over thirty-five years. We use both survey and administrative data to evaluate how the availability of unconditional resources at an early developmental stage, in terms of PFD payments to the child, affects a child’s …

Chemophobia And The Relation To Names, Justin Crow Apr 2019

Chemophobia And The Relation To Names, Justin Crow

Undergraduate Research Conference

Chemophobia is a recently identified cultural phenomena where people are afraid of chemicals in their lives, whether "chemicals" are in their food, their medicines, vaccinations, and other products. An increasing amount of people have a concern about the risk associated with chemicals in their everyday life. Chemistry professionals find this a bit strange as Chemistry states that all matter is made up of chemicals. Chemistry has many systems of naming and understanding chemicals which can exclude people from understanding the risk or lack thereof attributed to materials that are common in daily life. This effect could be accentuated by educational …

Synthesis Of Bipyridine Carbohydrate Receptors, Maxwell Addo Apr 2019

Synthesis Of Bipyridine Carbohydrate Receptors, Maxwell Addo

Theses and Dissertations

Macrocyclic molecules consisting of aromatic groups with amino side chains are known to bind selectively to carbohydrates, mainly monosaccharides and oligosaccharides. Some of these macrocyclic molecules, for example, Pyridine-based and Naphthyridine-based macrocyclic structures, behave like carbohydrate receptors and bind selectively to carbohydrates in aqueous solutions through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Bipyridine receptors mimic natural lectins. A bipyridine receptor was designed and synthesized from Tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and 2,2-bipyridine-4,4-dicarboxyaldehyde. The receptor was purified and characterized using extraction, HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy and ESI-MS (Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Masses and peaks obtained matched the expected structure …

Religion, Acculturarive Stress And Immigration Generations Among Hispanics In The Texas-Mexico Border: Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Substance Use, Diana Karen Vaquera Santos Apr 2019

Religion, Acculturarive Stress And Immigration Generations Among Hispanics In The Texas-Mexico Border: Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Substance Use, Diana Karen Vaquera Santos

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding Hispanic cultural aspects and their influence on mental health will be crucial to better serve Hispanics (Kouyoumdjian, et al., 2003). Alcohol and drug use disorders have been identified as a major health problem in the U.S. Hispanic population (Vega, Sribney, & Achara-Abrahams, 2003). Regarding substance use, religiosity tends to be a protective factor among Hispanics. Acculturation and acculturative stress have been found as additional factors associated with substance use. Moreover, an individual’s intentions to engage in certain behavior can be defined by their attitudes toward this behavior and their perceived subjective norms regarding such behavior (Lorenzo-Blanco, et al., 2016). …

Effects Of Age And Exercise On Density Of Sympathetic Innervation And Localization With Nerve Growth Factor And Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Vascular Tissue, Kori Mecklenburg

Honors Theses

Hypertension is a condition that affects nearly 75 million people in the United States (Merai et al, 2017). To better understand this mostly idiopathic condition, the role of survival factors on arterial innervation must be understood. Nerve growth factor (NGF) and glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) have been shown to support development and maintenance of the sympathetic nervous system. The aim of this study was to reveal how density of sympathetic innervation changes in mesenteric arteries over time and with six-months of exercise. Additionally, this study aimed to reveal the localization of GDNF and NGF alongside these changes in …

The Poverty-Reducing Effect Of Five Key Government Programs In Rural And Urban America, Jess Carson, Marybeth Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Jessica Carson and Marybeth Mattingly explore the extent to which rural and urban residents access five social programs—Social Security, disability benefits, federal and state cash assistance, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—and the effect of these programs individually and collectively in bringing family incomes closer to the poverty threshold. They report that these programs combined keep 11.5 percent of rural and 7.6 percent of urban residents out of poverty. Social Security is especially important: without it, poverty would increase by 4.4 percentage points in urban places and by 7.6 percentage points …

Gastrostomy Tube Complications And Management, Deborah J. Garcia

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The avoidable complications of clogging and dislodgement of gastrostomy tubes (g-tubes) place a tremendous burden on patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the entire medical system. These complications are associated with $130 million in healthcare utilization each year. Insufficient education of patients and personal caregivers regarding the prevention of complications of clogging and dislodgement of g-tubes is identified as a major barrier. Preintervention and postintervention education program models were established, which include a preprocedure clinic visit with education as well as scheduled follow-up phone calls. A chart review and follow-up phone call was used to evaluate the effect of providing consistent …

The Interactive Effect Of Temperature And Salinity In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Rachel Marie Palmer Apr 2019

The Interactive Effect Of Temperature And Salinity In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus), Rachel Marie Palmer

Dissertations and Theses

Frequent measures that aim to identify the tolerance of an organism to various environmental conditions rely on the mortality of said organism. However, the effects of sub-lethal stress can be just as important to consider as they may give rise to how an organism may live in such an environment (growth, reproduction, etc.). Coping with changes in environmental conditions can have a high energy cost. Even starting a cellular stress response alone has proven to be costly. It is therefore reasonable that organisms in stressful situations will dedicate energy sources to survival mechanisms, and downregulate non-necessary activities like growth, and …

Mechanisms Of Toxin Resistance By Wild Mammalian Herbivores, Jennifer Miles-Rhoades, Janae Wilson, Debbie Conner, John Vucetich Apr 2019

Mechanisms Of Toxin Resistance By Wild Mammalian Herbivores, Jennifer Miles-Rhoades, Janae Wilson, Debbie Conner, John Vucetich

2019 Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Conference

Some wild vertebrate herbivores are able to ingest potentially toxic plants. However, the mechanisms that facilitate toxin tolerance are relatively unknown in free-ranging vertebrate herbivores. We hypothesized that one mechanism of toxin tolerance is regulated absorption of ingested toxins resulting in excretion of unchanged toxins in feces and low blood exposure to toxins. We tested this hypothesis using free-ranging moose (Alces americanus) in Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, Michigan. These moose consume large amounts of balsam fir (Abies balsamea) that contains high concentrations of plant secondary metabolites (PSM), which are toxic to most herbivores. …

Enhancing Dining Experiences Through Emotional Tableware Design, Yueyue Zhang Apr 2019

Enhancing Dining Experiences Through Emotional Tableware Design, Yueyue Zhang

Theses

Positive dining experiences can improve both physical and psychological health. Eating with people and eating slowly can facilitate one’s experience and behavior during the process, owing to the unexpected information from their senses and the surrounding environment. Tableware is a very important bridge between people and food. People get food, share food, and serve food while dining. Therefore, the tableware based on emotional design can to a certain extent affect people's dining behavior and dining experience. This paper firstly introduces the reasons why people are getting hard to get a positive dining experience, and the importance of dining experiences. Then, …

Cross-Cultural Evidence Does Not Support Universal Acceleration Of Puberty In Father-Absent Households, Rebecca Sear, Paula Sheppard, David A. Coall

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Father absence in early life has been shown to be associated with accelerated reproductive development in girls. Evolutionary social scientists have proposed several adaptive hypotheses for this finding. Though there is variation in the detail of these hypotheses, they all assume that family environment in early life influences the development of life-history strategy, and, broadly, that early reproductive development is an adaptive response to father absence. Empirical evidence to support these hypotheses, however, has been derived from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) populations. Data from a much broader range of human societies are necessary in order to properly …
