Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Accessibility At Drive-Through Restaurants, Regina Mcleod Apr 2019

Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Accessibility At Drive-Through Restaurants, Regina Mcleod

Honors Theses

People who are deaf or hard of hearing deserve fair and accessible accommodations, which include drive-through restaurants. It is not a fair solution to force this population to go inside an establishment to order, especially due to the fact that many restaurants close the inside of their restaurants at night but will leave their drive-throughs open. According to legal cases and surveys conducted, accessibility at drive-through restaurants is a prodigious issue for members of the deaf and hard of hearing communities in the United States. Based upon these findings, there is a major lack of accessibility, in addition to discrimination, …

A Model For The Treatment Of Food Selectivity, Angie Van Arsdale Apr 2019

A Model For The Treatment Of Food Selectivity, Angie Van Arsdale

Thesis Projects

Research has shown antecedent interventions might be effective for treating food selectivity in the absence of consequent manipulations; however, escape extinction is the most commonly implemented intervention in feeding research. Escape extinction in the treatment of feeding disorders is an intrusive procedure that might not always be considered socially valid or feasible; therefore, it is important to evaluate other interventions prior to escape extinction. This study describes a methodology of evaluating antecedent and consequent interventions for subjects with food selectivity, progressing from least to most response effort and/or intrusiveness. For each subject, we moved through each intervention until acceptance increased …

Etiology Of Schizophrenia, Sherri Daniels Apr 2019

Etiology Of Schizophrenia, Sherri Daniels

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This literature review examines the biological and environmental risk factors in the etiology of schizophrenia. A well-researched theoretical framework behind the etiology of schizophrenia is the dopamine hypothesis which states the elevated levels of the brain chemical dopamine can contribute to the development of schizophrenia. Research has also shown genetic predispositions and obstetrical complications may contribute to the development of schizophrenia. The diathesis-stress model describes the heightened cortisol releasing the potential to intensify schizophrenia symptoms while amplifying dopamine activity in the environment. More recent findings show that genetics influences act in cohesion with environmental factors. Based upon the findings of …

Ucp1 Expression-Associated Gene Signatures Of Human Epicardial Adipose Tissue., Kanta Chechi, Jinchu Vijay, Pierre Voisine, Patrick Mathieu, Yohan Bossé, Andre Tchernof, Elin Grundberg, Denis Richard

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Multiple reports of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression have established its presence in human epicardial adipose tissue (eAT). Its functional relevance to eAT, however, remains largely unknown. In a recent study, we reported that adrenergic stimulation of eAT was associated with downregulation of secreted proteins involved in oxidative stress-related and immune-related pathways. Here, we explored the UCP1-associated features of human eAT using next-generation deep sequencing. Paired biopsies of eAT, mediastinal adipose tissue (mAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (sAT) obtained from cardiac surgery patients, with specific criteria of high and low expression of UCP1 in eAT, were subjected to RNA sequencing. …

Exploring A Child’S History For Optimal Treatment Of Food Selectivity., Briana Lear Apr 2019

Exploring A Child’S History For Optimal Treatment Of Food Selectivity., Briana Lear

Honors Theses

Food selectivity is defined as “food refusal based on type, texture, temperature, or appearance of food, leading to a self-restricted diet” (Suarez, 2015). Food selectivity affects children of all ages. Food selectivity refers to when a child is eating as few as 5-10 different foods and demonstrates food refusal behaviors, which can make mealtime a challenge for children and their families (Suarez, 2015). Occupational therapy addresses activities of daily living (ADLS), therefore feeding, including food selectivity is included within the OT scope of practice. There is a need to create a comprehensive and thorough document to collect a client’s history …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Background: Centenarian studies are important sources for understanding of factors that contribute to longevity and healthy aging. Clinico-neuropathological finding is a key in identifying pathology and factors contributing to age-related cognitive decline and dementia in the oldest old.

Objective: To characterize the cross-sectional relationship between neuropathologies and measures of premortem cognitive performance in centenarians.

Methods: Data were acquired from 49 centenarians (≥98 years) from the Georgia Centenarian Study. Cognitive assessment from the time point closest to mortality was used (<1 year for all subjects) and scores for cognitive domains were established. Neuropathologies [cerebral atrophy, ventricular dilation, atherosclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), Lewy bodies, hippocampal sclerosis (HS), hippocampal TDP-43 proteinopathy, neuritic plaque (NP) and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) counts, Braak staging, and National Institute on Aging-Reagan Institute (NIARI) criteria for the neuropathological diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)] were compared among subjects with different ratings of dementia. Linear regression was applied to evaluate the association between cognitive domain scores and neuropathologies.

Results: Wide ranges of AD-type neuropathological changes were observed in both non-demented and demented subjects. Neocortical NFT and Braak staging …

The Development Of Evidence-Based Early Child Feeding And Obesity Prevention Messages For Parents Of Children Birth To 2 Years Old, Rebecca L. Heller

Doctoral Dissertations

Early childhood obesity from birth to 2-years (B-24) is a growing public health concern. The current lack of consistent and comprehensive child feeding materials may contribute to barriers in childhood obesity prevention. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers preventing parents of B-24 from implementing optimal feeding and obesity prevention practices and develop evidence-based messages to overcome these barriers.

For Phase 1 and 2, one-on-one interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and thematic analysis was conducted. Phase 1 interviews with healthcare, community-based, and education providers working with families of B-24 identified barriers faced when promoting obesity prevention. Providers reported parental …

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino Apr 2019

Sustainability In Quality Improvement And Patient Safety Initiatives, Angelo P. Giardino, Eileen R. Giardino

Journal of Nursing & Interprofessional Leadership in Quality & Safety

The question often asked of a quality improvement initiative is whether the improvement process has been sustained within the organization. Rarely is the question answered satisfactorily. The sustainability of an improvement process is important as it justifies the investment of human and financial capital. The term 'evaporation of improvements' addresses the dilemma that between 33% to 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained (Fleiszer, Semenic, Ritchie, Richer, & Denis, 2015) . This evaporation of improvement captures the frustrating inability of many institutions to maintain the achieved improvement after the newness of the initial effort wears off (Buchanan, Fitzgerald, & …

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin Apr 2019

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin

Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)

ABSTRACT:

How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.

Although some …

Maternal Hemoglobin Concentrations Across Pregnancy And Maternal And Child Health: A Systematic Review And Meta‐Analysis, Melissa F. Young, Brietta M. Oaks, Sonia Tandon, Reynaldo Martorell, Kathryn G. Dewey, Amanda S. Wendt

Nutrition Faculty Publications

Maternal anemia is a well‐recognized global health problem; however, there remain questions on specific hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds that predict health risk or protection for mother and child. We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis to examine the associations of maternal Hb concentrations with a range of maternal and infant health outcomes, accounting for the timing of measurement (preconception, and first, second, and third trimesters), etiology of anemia, and cutoff category. The systematic review included 272 studies and the meta‐analysis included 95 studies. Low maternal Hb (<110 g/L) was associated with poor birth outcomes (low birth weight, preterm birth, small‐for‐gestational‐age (SGA), stillbirth, and perinatal and neonatal mortality) and adverse maternal outcomes (postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia, and blood transfusion). High maternal Hb (>130 g/L) was associated with increased odds of SGA, stillbirth, preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes. …

The treatment of seeds and plants by electrically generated cold atmospheric pressure plasma can accelerate seed germination and radicle growing rates. The plasma generated reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, UV photons, and high frequency electromagnetic fields can penetrate into seed coats and modify their surface properties. Atomic force microscope data shows that cold helium or argon plasma induces strong corrugation of pumpkin seed coats, produces pores and surface defects. These structural deformations and poration enhance water uptake by seeds during the imbibing process, accelerate seeds germination, and increase seed growth. The cold atmospheric pressure plasmas treatment of pumpkin seeds also …

Impacts Of Time Restricted Feeding On Peak Volume Of Oxygen Uptake And Substrate Utilization, Corbyn R. Bendtsen, Eric Norman, Nicole Schweitzer, Megan Coyle, Cassie Fileccia, Marquel Fleischacker, Lauren Kaminski, Andrew Kezar, Megan Lind, Emma Masiulewicz

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2019

Time Restricted Feeding (TRF) is a type of Intermittent Fasting, which refers to the finite time to intake calories during the day. TRF has become a dietary approach that is used for weight loss and overall health. Individuals that partake in TRF may experience a decrease in peak volume of oxygen uptake (VO2peak) due to minimization of glycolytic stores. To date, few studies have compared the impact of TRF on VO2peak. PURPOSE: The current study aimed to further investigate the metabolic impact of TRF. METHODS: Twenty one participants, ages 18-60, completed an eleven week longitudinal study to examine differences in …

Eating Behaviors And Cultural Influences On Appearance: What Is The Experience Of College Women?, Alexa Jo M. Schafer, Theodore Mickelson, Hannah Kunkel, Abby Teply, Trevor Gibson

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2019

Previous research has shown that people who suffer from eating disorders are likely to engage in unhealthy eating behaviors and cultural pressure toward appearance. The purpose of the present study was to replicate previous studies examining unhealthy eating behaviors and cultural values of appearance among college women. It was hypothesized that approximately 50% of college women at WSU engage in unhealthy eating behaviors and college women who report unhealthy eating habits will also note greater awareness of cultural values toward appearance. Seventy-nine undergraduate women participated in a series of online surveys through Qualtrics. Variables examined for this project came from …

High Efficiency Drug Repurposing Design For New Antifungal Agents, Jong H. Kim, Kathleen L. Chan, Luisa W. Cheng, Lisa A. Tell, Barbara A. Byrne, Kristin Clothier, Kirkwood M. Land

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Current antifungal interventions have often limited efficiency in treating fungal pathogens, particularly those resistant to commercial drugs or fungicides. Antifungal drug repurposing is an alternative intervention strategy, whereby new utility of various marketed, non-antifungal drugs could be repositioned as novel antifungal agents. In this study, we investigated "chemosensitization" as a method to improve the efficiency of antifungal drug repurposing, wherein combined application of a second compound (viz., chemosensitizer) with a conventional, non-antifungal drug could greatly enhance the antifungal activity of the co-applied drug. Redox-active natural compounds or structural derivatives, such as thymol (2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol), 4-isopropyl-3-methylphenol, or 3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, could serve as potent …

Marriage And Family Therapist Websites: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Thomas Bischoff

Doctoral Dissertations

The positive benefits of therapy are well-established (Duberstein et al., 2018) and therapy continues to make significant strides with regard to therapeutic outcomes. However, little is known regarding client initiation processes as well as how therapists reach out to potential clients. Clients present with a variety of challenges, and researchers and clinicians struggle with creating ways to increase access to care, reach out to potential clients, and engage individuals in therapy services. Nevertheless, therapist engagement and connection with the client can have a significant impact (Sexton, Littauer, Sexton, & Tømmerås, 2005). Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are uniquely trained and …
