Companion Dog Acquisition And Mental Well-Being: A Community-Based Three-Arm Controlled Study, Lauren Powell, Kate M. Edwards, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Adrian Bauman, Anthony L. Podberscek, Brendon Neilly, Catherine Sherrington, Emmanuel Stamatakis Dec 2019

Companion Dog Acquisition And Mental Well-Being: A Community-Based Three-Arm Controlled Study, Lauren Powell, Kate M. Edwards, Paul D. Mcgreevy, Adrian Bauman, Anthony L. Podberscek, Brendon Neilly, Catherine Sherrington, Emmanuel Stamatakis

Human-Animal Relationships Collection

Background

Dog ownership is suggested to improve mental well-being, although empirical evidence among community dog owners is limited. This study examined changes in human mental well-being following dog acquisition, including four measures: loneliness, positive and negative affect, and psychological distress.

Methods

We conducted an eight-month controlled study involving three groups (n = 71): 17 acquired a dog within 1 month of baseline (dog acquisition); 29 delayed dog acquisition until study completion (lagged control); and 25 had no intentions of acquiring a dog (community control). All participants completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale (possible scores 0–60), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule …

How To Play A Poem By Don Bialostosky, Jayme Stayer Dec 2019

How To Play A Poem By Don Bialostosky, Jayme Stayer

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Don Bialostosky has long been admired as a writer of dense texts aimed at theory-minded academics and addressing Bakhtin and rhetoric. With How to Play a Poem, Bialostosky plays to a different audience, positioning himself as “something of a popular entertainer,” to use T. S. Eliot’s improbable self-description in the wake of The Waste Land. Aimed not at theoreticians but average teachers of poetry, Bialostosky’s text attempts to make Bakhtin accessible for the college and high school classroom. For my own audience here, I offer a conflict-of-interest disclosure: Bialostosky directed my dissertation over twenty-five years ago, but there is little …

Treading The Winepress; Or, A Mountain Of Misfortune, Clarissa Minnie Thompson Allen, Gabrielle Brown, Eric Willey, Jean Macdonald

Undiscovered Americas

“Every life hath its chapter of sorrow. No matter how rich the gilding or fair the pages of the volume, Trouble will stamp it with his sable signet.”

So begins the novel Treading the Winepress; or, A Mountain of Misfortune by Clarissa Minnie Thompson Allen, which, had it appeared in book form in 1885–1886 instead of serialized in The Boston Advocate, would have been the second novel published by a black woman in the United States. Instead, Allen has been mostly forgotten by literary history. Now, thanks to the painstaking efforts of editors Gabrielle Brown, Eric Willey, and Jean …

Modeling Market Reactions To Auditor Changes Using Variable Selection Algorithms: A Meta-Analysis, Richard Holowczak, David A. Louton, Hakan Saraoglu, Charles Cullinan Dec 2019

Modeling Market Reactions To Auditor Changes Using Variable Selection Algorithms: A Meta-Analysis, Richard Holowczak, David A. Louton, Hakan Saraoglu, Charles Cullinan

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

Market reactions to auditor change filings have been studied over a long period in the literature. We provide a review of the literature on market response to auditor changes and identify a superset of variables used in published research. Applying methods from machine learning to optimize variable selection, we build models that explain market reaction to auditor changes. We compare the performance of our models with the performance of the models that use subsets of variables examined in a select list of studies in the literature. Our meta-analysis results in an improvement in model fit compared to the analysis used …

Setting Our Feet: The Foundations Of Religious And Conscience Protections, Hanna Torline Dec 2019

Setting Our Feet: The Foundations Of Religious And Conscience Protections, Hanna Torline

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note does not attempt to claim that religion and conscience are not moral equivalents, that they are not equally important, or that they do not require equal legal treatment. Nor does it attempt to claim the converse. Simply put, it argues that a consideration of the different foundations underlying conscience protections and religious protections should give pause to anyone arguing that the two are equivalent. This Note concludes that the rationales behind protecting religion and conscience are different enough to merit consideration in the debate. For if religion and conscience are treated as equivalents under the law, they will …

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin Dec 2019

The Nineteenth Century British Workhouse: Mission Not Accomplished, Brenda Derin

Senior Theses

How to correct poverty in a society is extremely complex. In the nineteenth century, the British struggled to house, feed and care for the unemployed and destitute men, women and children created by the Industrial Revolution. Many in the upper classes considered poverty a moral failure, yet they had little impetus to end it. Poverty, as defined by an inability to provide for one’s needs due to a variety of factors, was seen as necessary, for without it there would be no motivation for the lower classes to work and provide a luxurious life for the wealthy.

Although some in …

Asian-American Visibility: Movement Toward Authenticity And Exposing The White Gaze, Nora Tsou Dec 2019

Asian-American Visibility: Movement Toward Authenticity And Exposing The White Gaze, Nora Tsou

Senior Theses

Asian-Americans have a historical legacy and a multiplicity of narratives that are often rendered absent in American culture. Our oppression is not commonly spoken about, but it is relevant. By decentering Eurocentric thought as the only valid philosophy, herein this study I perform Asian-American philosophy through an analysis of philosophical and sociological texts on race. I continuously echo George Yancy and Gloria Anzaldua, philosophers of race, respectively, on the African-American and Latin-American experience, for their philosophy has greatly lead me to understanding my own. In order to conceptualize what oppressive struggles Asian-Americans face, I delve into research that exposes these …

School Counseling Toward A Mission Of “Ib For All” School Counseling Toward A Mission Of “Ib For All”, Nancy Chae, Susanne P. Gray-Rice

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Although the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) recognizes the importance of school counselors, there is limited guidance about the expectations and roles of school counselors in serving the diverse needs of students in IB schools. With the IBO’s movement toward a mission of “IB for All” to address equitable access to academic rigor, this also aligns with school counselors’ ethical responsibilities as advocates, collaborators, and leaders to promote access and equity for all students. The authors (a) highlight the work of one school counseling program that developed and implemented initiatives, using the U.S.- based ASCA National Model (ASCA, 2019a) as a …

"They Almost Become The Teacher": Pre-K To Third Grade Teachers’ Experiences Reading And Discussing Culturally Relevant Texts With Their Students, Amy Clark, Jane Fleming Dec 2019

"They Almost Become The Teacher": Pre-K To Third Grade Teachers’ Experiences Reading And Discussing Culturally Relevant Texts With Their Students, Amy Clark, Jane Fleming

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This qualitative research study examined 13 preschool to third-grade teachers’ experiences reading and discussing culturally relevant texts (CRTs) with their students. Teachers worked at four schools in a large urban school district and with child populations from different sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds. We employed provisional and open-coding to analyze teacher interview data. Three salient themes emerged from the data: children’s identity investment in reading and discussing CRTs, children’s interest in CRTs, and children’s depth of comprehension when discussing CRTs. Findings from teacher observations suggest that reading and discussing CRTs with children from nondominant social backgrounds can tap into children’s capacities …

Groundwater Investigations To Support Irrigated Agriculture At La Grange, Western Australia: 2013–18 Results, Robert J. Paul, Gregory Paul Raper, Richard J. George Dr, Nicholas J. Wright, Adam M. Lillicrap, Peter S. Gardiner

Resource management technical reports

The Broome Sandstone aquifer is the main aquifer and groundwater resource in the La Grange area, near Broome in the West Kimberley, Western Australia. Land use is dominated by cattle grazing on pastoral stations, dispersed mining and tourism. Irrigated agriculture has developed at a small scale, with about 470 hectares under cultivation in 2014. Groundwater abstraction is licensed under the La Grange groundwater allocation plan (Department of Water 2010) and managed by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. The La Grange groundwater allocation area is split into the La Grange North subarea and La Grange South subarea, with groundwater …

A Further Result On The Aging Properties Of An Extended Additive Hazard Model, Morteza Raeisi, Gholamhossein Yari Dec 2019

A Further Result On The Aging Properties Of An Extended Additive Hazard Model, Morteza Raeisi, Gholamhossein Yari

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The passing of time is an important factor for covariates in the additive and proportional hazard models. According to this idea, the extended additive hazard model (EAHM) is introduced by considering the time-varying effects of covariates and is investigated several properties of this model related to reliability analysis. In this paper, we obtain a further result for the EAHM with respect to the aging properties.

Reading Recovery In South Carolina: 2018-2019 State Report, C. C. Bates

Publications

Developed by New Zealand educator Dr. Marie M. Clay, Reading Recovery® is a short-term early intervention for first grade students who have the lowest achievement on measures of literacy outcomes. Students meet individually with a specially trained teacher for 30 minutes each day for a period of 12-20 weeks. The goal during this period is for children to develop a network of reading and writing strategies so they may independently perform within the average range of their class.

Redefining Labels: The Session Is Ours For The Taking, Erica Snow Dec 2019

Redefining Labels: The Session Is Ours For The Taking, Erica Snow

Tutor's Column

There is a wealth of resources available for any writing center tutor struggling with a particular aspect of sessions regarding the student, but equally important is for a tutor to receive adequate training on their own psyche in the tutoring experience. Through simple methods, this paper offers strategies for tutors to increase their own self-care and create a more positive outlook on tutoring experiences. Engaging these strategies in their own practice will equip tutors to better help the students, as well as encourage a healthier state of mind.

We Found Language In A Lonely Place: A Rumination Into Quieting The Fears Of El Students And Quieting Our Own Fears About Effectively Tutoring Them, Zoe Baldwin Dec 2019

We Found Language In A Lonely Place: A Rumination Into Quieting The Fears Of El Students And Quieting Our Own Fears About Effectively Tutoring Them, Zoe Baldwin

Tutor's Column

This text shares the concern that many tutors face in effectively tutoring EL students by helping their confidence as writers, addressing their concerns, and helping them build long-term writing skills. The text will address what tutors can do in their tutoring sessions to help EL students with their writing concerns. There is discussion about some of the most common EL concerns such as grammar, or cohesion. These concerns are met with suggestions such as addressing grammar, talking about the ideas that the writer wants to convey, brainstorming ideas and getting them to write them down, and being mindful of how …

Escaping The Spiral: How Peer Tutoring Disrupts Perfectionistic Tendencies, Anne Schill Dec 2019

Escaping The Spiral: How Peer Tutoring Disrupts Perfectionistic Tendencies, Anne Schill

Tutor's Column

This column examines how the peer tutoring setting allows for both students and tutors to relinquish perfectionistic tendencies. Peer tutoring gives students permission to bring in imperfect work and realize such an action won’t cause the world to implode. It also teaches tutors to not expect themselves to know absolutely everything, but rather develop ways to get help with solutions. This column is part personal experience, part research. I provide my own experience as both a student and a tutor, as well as citing Rebecca Knight’s Harvard Business Review article, “How to Manage Your Perfectionism.” Perfectionistic expectations and cycles must …

How About You Give It A Try: Hands-On Tutoring Sessions, Mikayla Tobler Dec 2019

How About You Give It A Try: Hands-On Tutoring Sessions, Mikayla Tobler

Tutor's Column

The idea of asking a student to practice a skill first occurred to me when I was tutoring a student with an essay where I noticed that the student consistently missed opportunities to include sensory imagery. Within that session, I explained sensory imagery and asked the student to practice applying it. The success I felt after watching the student improve during this session motivated me to try it in many more. I’ve found that this technique works best when a student feels unsure about what to work on with a tutor. The tutor can then go through the student’s work …
