Inventorying Amenities And Usage Of Lewiston-Auburn Trails, Mary Margaret Adams, Alison Bodner, Rafi Wolfson
Inventorying Amenities And Usage Of Lewiston-Auburn Trails, Mary Margaret Adams, Alison Bodner, Rafi Wolfson
Community Engaged Research Reports
Trails provide numerous benefits to the community and the environment, and give a space for people to engage with the outdoors. Safe and well maintained trails promote healthy lifestyles by increasing the physical activity of the public, mitigate climate change by encouraging clean means of travel and promote community building by creating a space for people to interact with each other. While trails provide overarching benefits to the community at large, each trail presents unique benefits, challenges and usage patterns, and every trail user has their own relationship with the trails that they use. The L/A Trails organization found a …

The Community Outreach Model Of Service-Learning: A Case Study Of Active Learning And Service-Learning In A Natural Hazards, Vulnerability, And Risk Class, Brittany D. Brand, Kara Brascia, Margaret Sass
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The popularity of service learning is increasing, especially at a time when college students want to make a greater impact in their communities. However, service learning has not been extensively assessed in courses based in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This article provides a case study of how incorporating service learning through a community outreach project can increase student engagement, enhance the depth of understanding of a given topic, build communication and teamwork skills, and contribute meaningfully to the students' community. This article shares how the instructor of a natural hazards, vulnerability, and risk course implements service-learning through a community …
Cooperation As A Coping Mechanism When Interpreting Between Deaf Refugees And Hearing Professionals, Elisabet Trengereid Olsen
Cooperation As A Coping Mechanism When Interpreting Between Deaf Refugees And Hearing Professionals, Elisabet Trengereid Olsen
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This article describes interpreting between deaf refugees and hearing professionals in community settings, with a focus on cooperation. Extensive communication barriers characterize these situations, as deaf interlocutors and interpreters do not share languages. The situations require interpreters with the ability to communicate visually and use unconventional forms of communication, not depending solely on formalized signed languages when interpreting. Based on interviews with signed language interpreters in qualitative focus groups, this article shows how interpreters in these situations convey meaning between the interlocutors, and how establishing cooperation with the hearing interlocutor is a coping strategy in that regard. The article also …
Accuracy: Omissions In Consecutive Versus Simultaneous Interpreting, Evy Cox, Heidi Salaets
Accuracy: Omissions In Consecutive Versus Simultaneous Interpreting, Evy Cox, Heidi Salaets
International Journal of Interpreter Education
It is sometimes assumed that consecutive interpreting is more accurate than simultaneous interpreting due to note-taking (Andres, 2002; Gile, 2001a; Matyssek, 1989). So far, little comparative research has been conducted to confirm this belief. Omission in interpreting is a well-known phenomenon, which has already been studied from various perspectives. Omissions are a complex matter, especially because a certain degree of subjectivity can never completely be avoided, as will be explained more broadly in this research article. Furthermore, most research on omissions in interpreting consists of small-scale studies. The study described here set out to compare non-strategic omissions in both consecutive …
Working With Active Interpreters: A Commentary About Interpreting Terminology And Concepts, Hilde Haualand, Anna-Lena Nilsson
Working With Active Interpreters: A Commentary About Interpreting Terminology And Concepts, Hilde Haualand, Anna-Lena Nilsson
International Journal of Interpreter Education
This commentary is a critical discussion of some terms that are frequently used when we talk about interpreting. Several of the popular terms may actually downplay the work done by both the interpreters and the other participants in interpreted interaction. In order to accentuate the work done by the interpreter as well as the active contribution by all participants in an interpreted dialogue, the commentary suggests some other terms. We would rather have us talk about working with interpreters than to ‘use’ interpreters, that interpreters interpret from a signed language to a spoken language rather than ‘voice for’, and that …

Incorporating Word Order Explicitly In Glove Word Embedding, Brandon Cox
Incorporating Word Order Explicitly In Glove Word Embedding, Brandon Cox
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Word embedding is the process of representing words from a corpus of text as real number vectors. These vectors are often derived from frequency statistics from the source corpus. In the GloVe model as proposed by Pennington et al., these vectors are generated using a word-word cooccurrence matrix. However, the GloVe model fails to explicitly take into account the order in which words appear within the contexts of other words. In this paper, multiple methods of incorporating word order in GloVe word embeddings are proposed. The most successful method involves directly concatenating several word vector matrices for each position in …
Image-Driven Automated End-To-End Testing For Mobile Applications, Caleb Fritz
Image-Driven Automated End-To-End Testing For Mobile Applications, Caleb Fritz
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The increasing complexity and demand of software systems and the greater availability of test automation software is quickly rendering manual end-to-end (E2E) testing techniques for mobile platforms obsolete. This research seeks to explore the potential increase in automated test efficacy and maintainability through the use of computer vision algorithms when applied with Appium, a leading cross-platform mobile test automation framework. A testing framework written in a Node.js environment was created to support the development of E2E test scripts that examine and report the functional capabilities of a mobile test app. The test framework provides a suite of functions that connect …

The Privileges Or Immunities Clause, Abridged: A Critique Of Kurt Lash On The Fourteenth Amendment, Randy E. Barnett, Evan D. Bernick
Notre Dame Law Review
In earlier writings, both of us have expressed sympathy for the view that the Privileges or Immunities Clause affords absolute protection to unenumerated rights, such as those contained in the Civil Rights Act of 1866, and authorizes Congress to enact protective legislation. Neither of us, however, has engaged with Kurt Lash’s most recent and unique two-class interpretation of the original meaning of the Privileges or Immunities Clause in the depth that it deserves. Nor have we evaluated his recent efforts to demonstrate that the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process of Law Clause empowers the federal courts and Congress to protect unenumerated …

Authenticity And Practicality: Evaluating And Performing Multicultural Choral Music, Jesse Noote
Authenticity And Practicality: Evaluating And Performing Multicultural Choral Music, Jesse Noote
Dissertations
Many choral music educators believe that multicultural music is a vital part of any choral curriculum. However, the research shows that these same choral directors are reluctant to select multicultural octavos because they lack training in non-Western music, which prevents them from effectively teaching and performing this music authentically. The purpose of this dissertation is to equip choral directors with the necessary tools for bridging the gap between desiring to perform and actually performing multicultural octavos.
Six authors have provided authenticity checklists that are designed to help music educators evaluate and perform multicultural music. This research synthesizes those lists to …

An Analysis Of Western Art Music Arrangements For Steel Pan Chamber Ensemble, Ian Meiman
Dissertations
This dissertation is an analysis of western art music arrangements for steel pan chamber ensembles. Specifically, this dissertation will analyze how certain arrangers have adapted western art music for steel pan chamber ensemble while discussing the possible methods the arranger used to create this adaptation. The analysis will observe the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and other significant alterations made in the steel pan chamber arrangement, and discuss any changes made, whether due to the adaptation of the instruments or otherwise, from the original works. The dissertation will also include a brief historical discussion on western art music’s influence of early steel …
Selected Performance Indicators Of University-Model Schools, David Herndon
Selected Performance Indicators Of University-Model Schools, David Herndon
Dissertations
University-Model® schools seek to blend attributes of homeschooling with traditional schooling by transferring a significant portion of classroom time to a satellite classroom, typically the student’s home. Proponents suggest the model lends itself to better prepared and well-balanced graduates due to the forced ownership required of students in terms of time management, the development of independent study habits, increased balance of family life, and subsequent parental guidance; however, very little research exists to validate these claims. These tenants of the model are in line with recent research and theories suggesting a more holistic approach, beyond academic metrics, to ensure college …
Female Student Perceptions Of Factors That Influence Persistence In Male-Dominated Community College Career And Technical Education Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Programs, Valeria Williams
Dissertations
The number of males enrolled in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs outnumber female counterparts (Wang & Degol, 2017). The disparity is even greater in persistence rates for STEM related fields (Glass, Sassler, Levitte & Michelmore, 2013). The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of females enrolled in traditionally male-dominated programs of study, specifically in the areas of STEM in community and junior colleges, to determine factors that influence persistence.
Although previous research exists focusing on women in STEM, most studies explore the barriers women face (Ong, Wright, Espinosa, & Orfield, 2011). The findings from previous …
Please Tweet Responsibly: The Social And Professional Ethics Of Public Defenders Using Client Information In Social Media Advocacy, Nicole Smith Futrell
Please Tweet Responsibly: The Social And Professional Ethics Of Public Defenders Using Client Information In Social Media Advocacy, Nicole Smith Futrell
Publications and Research
Every day the criminal legal system hauls poor and marginalized individuals through a process wrought with trauma, indignity, and abuse. Public defenders representing the criminally accused view their clients and the system from a unique vantage point: they bear witness to the human costs of a system that falls far short of its purported norms and ideals. For the public defender who works within this reality day in and day out, fighting for each individual client might feel limited in its wider impact. Some public defenders have found that using online and social media platforms, such as Twitter, to provide …

Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Research Collection School of Economics
Does early grading affect educational choices? To answer the question, I exploit the staggeredimplementation of a reform which postponed grade assignment in Swedish compulsoryschool. I identify short- and long-term effects of early grading, for students with differentacademic ability and socioeconomic status (SES). When graded early on, high-ability students(especially if high-SES) perform better, and are more likely to choose academic coursesduring compulsory school. Low-ability students react in the opposite way, in particular iflow-SES. While high school attainment increases for high-ability low-SES students, collegeattainment decreases for low-ability low-SES students. None of these effects carry over tothe labor market. This suggests that early …

Analysis Of Essential Programs And Services Components: English Language Learners Report Of Findings, Lisa Morris Phd, Amy F. Johnson Phd
Multi-language Learners
The Essential Programs and Services (EPS) funding formula allocates additional resources for each student who is identified as needing supplemental English language instruction. The additional funds are calculated using a weighting procedure that adjusts the student count upward by a certain amount in order to increase the district’s allocation. The weight is an estimate of the added cost of educating EL students relative to their non-EL peers.

London Moves East: How The Olympics Impacts Host Communities, Aaron Bonsu
London Moves East: How The Olympics Impacts Host Communities, Aaron Bonsu
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
While the Olympics desire to remake its host communities through economic and housing reform to the benefit of local people, its housing legacy does not adequately serve the intended communities. By using a case study approach, the London 2012 Olympic Games was analyzed through a provisional codebook created based off of academic research on the concept of legacy and the Olympics. In this analysis, the London 2012 Games were found as not serving the needs of the local population. While there is a strong commitment to creating a tangible, impactful legacy, a lack of government focus on delivering public goods …
