History And Development Of British Secular Song For Solo Voice And Clarinet, Nancy Williams Dec 2019

History And Development Of British Secular Song For Solo Voice And Clarinet, Nancy Williams

Dissertations

Even though the use of the solo clarinet in British song made large advances in the twentieth century, many clarinetists are unaware of its repertory. A study of these songs will make it easier for performers to find these scores and will encourage them to program a greater variety of these songs, many of which are significantly underserved. Furthermore, a study of this repertory will lead to greater understanding of the importance of the repertoire and the role of the clarinet in it, resulting in informative and engaging performances. Both the investigation of the history of the clarinet's use in …

Each interview was audio-recorded, transcribed, and focus-coded for themes related to the interview questions. Themes were then grouped into the …

Scaffolding Choice, Increasing Access: A Summer Initiative To Promote Middle School Students’ Book Reading, Lauren Capotosto Dec 2019

Scaffolding Choice, Increasing Access: A Summer Initiative To Promote Middle School Students’ Book Reading, Lauren Capotosto

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Middle schools often mandate summer reading as a means of stemming summer learning loss, but research suggests that many students do not read any books during the summer months. Limited book access and difficulties self-selecting books are two barriers that can impact students’ summer reading practices. To address these challenges, students in one Grade 7 classroom participated in an initiative designed to scaffold book choices prior to summer break and to increase students’ access to high-interest books. Compared to students in a randomly selected business-as-usual classroom, students who participated in the book scaffolding initiative were more likely to read at …

When They Sing A Song Of Joy With Sorrow, Ziba Rajabi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As an Iranian female artist, my work revolves around my desire to reconcile my relationship with two distinctive places, Tehran (my native land) and Arkansas (where I reside now). In my paintings and installations, I re-create intimate moments culled from my home and neighborhood in Iran. Due to a situation where I am far away from my homeland and not allowed to return without being forced to remain in Iran, I can feel my memories of home fading away. By utilizing memories from my past, I take aspects of images that are no longer recognizable and, therefore, are abstracted into …

Rediscovering Corfield V. Coryell, Gerard N. Magliocca Dec 2019

Rediscovering Corfield V. Coryell, Gerard N. Magliocca

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article reveals new details about Corfield v. Coryell based on archival research. In 2017, the author found Justice Washington’s original notes on Corfield in the Chicago History Museum. The most important revelation about Corfield is that the Justice was initially inclined to hold that the state law his decision upheld was, in fact, unconstitutional under the Privileges and Immunities Clause. The notes also say that he saw Livingston v. Van Ingen as the leading precedent on the Privileges and Immunities Clause and backed Chancellor Kent’s view in that case that the Clause articulated a nondiscrimination rule for out-of-state citizens …

Schools As Workplaces: Intersectional Regimes Of Inequality, Johanna S. Quinn, Myra Marx Ferree Dec 2019

Schools As Workplaces: Intersectional Regimes Of Inequality, Johanna S. Quinn, Myra Marx Ferree

Sociology Faculty Publications

Joan Acker extended her 1990 brilliant and path‐breaking article, ‘Hierarchies, Jobs, Bodies’, to address the intersectional effects of gender, race and class as ‘inequality regimes’ in her 2006 article of that name. This research picks up her challenge to see embodied workers holding jobs in organizations structured simultaneously and interactively by gender, race and class processes. Rather than studying a corporate regime in which the actors are managers, supervisors and workers, this study looks at the organizational interactions among teachers and paraprofessionals in one large, urban and unionized school district in the United States. We look at skill, care and …

“If We Don’T Include Literature, Where Do We Teach Our Students From?” An Effort To Introduce Children’S Literature To Indonesian Preservice Teachers, Tati L Durriyah Dec 2019

“If We Don’T Include Literature, Where Do We Teach Our Students From?” An Effort To Introduce Children’S Literature To Indonesian Preservice Teachers, Tati L Durriyah

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Indonesia’s new literacy initiative called Gerakan Literasi Sekolah (GLS) focuses on developing literacy-rich school environments through a sequence of book engagements. As the locus of control in daily literacy activities (Lehman, 2007), teachers in Indonesia assume much of the responsibility for student literacy learning. Despite this, Indonesian teachers receive minimal preparation in facilitating literacy instruction using literature; for example, courses that introduce student teachers to children’s literature are not commonly offered in Indonesian teacher education. This study aims to fill in the dearth of data regarding the efforts to introduce Indonesian preservice teachers to literature for children and the pedagogy …

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, Kathryn C. Casey Dec 2019

Psychometric Evaluation Of The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, Kathryn C. Casey

Dissertations

Graduate nurses experience stress transitioning from the role of nursing student to practicing professional nurse. Understanding the graduate nurse’s role transition experience is important because excessive and unrelieved stress might influence job satisfaction and contribute to high turnover. Measuring and improving the role transition experience for graduate nurses has become important for healthcare organizations due to concerns regarding retention. A valid and reliable instrument was needed to assess the graduate nurse’s role transition experience. The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey (Casey, Fink, Krugman, & Propst, 2004) is the most commonly used instrument to measure the stressors, fears, and challenges experienced …

Platform Pleading: Analyzing Employment Disputes In The Technology Sector, Joseph A. Seiner Dec 2019

Platform Pleading: Analyzing Employment Disputes In The Technology Sector, Joseph A. Seiner

Washington Law Review

The technology sector has created thousands of new jobs for workers across the country in an emerging multi-billion dollar industry. Many companies in this platform-based sector are attempting to characterize their workers as independent contractors rather than employees, thus stripping them of both federal and state workplace protections—including the right to bargain collectively, receive fair compensation, and avoid discrimination. The federal courts, which have always grappled with the question of worker classification, are now struggling to define employment with respect to these gig sector jobs. The result has been scattered court decisions with inconsistent and conflicting analyses. This Essay seeks …

Kernels And Beyond For Data Similarity Learning In Data Mining, Akshay Malhotra Dec 2019

Kernels And Beyond For Data Similarity Learning In Data Mining, Akshay Malhotra

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This work discusses the problem of unsupervised clustering of signals/data vectors based on their information content. A correlation based perspective to the clustering problem has been considered, thus relying on the high correlation between data vectors from the same class rather than on the position of the vectors in the data space. In the past, correlation based clustering has been formulated using a canonical correlation framework or as a matrix factorization problem and has been solved with different variants of gradient descent. This work focuses on improving the clustering performance by modifying the framework to utilize non-linear associations or correlations. …

Parsing Code-Switched Taglish Language By Creating Constituents, Fadiah Qudah Dec 2019

Parsing Code-Switched Taglish Language By Creating Constituents, Fadiah Qudah

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

When extracting meaning from language, a common first step is to break down language into constituents, or words that work together as a unit. This task, known as parsing, typically follows a specific grammar in order decompose the language into its underlying structure composed of constituents. Difficulties with this grammar-based parsing occur, however, with real-world natural language due to its unstructured nature. Code-switching, the phenomenon of alternating between languages while communicating, further complicates this task by requiring us to parse based on two (or more) languages instead of one. In this thesis, a data-driven method to parse code-switched language into …

Identification And Characterization Of Gate Oxide Defects Responsible For Low Frequency Noise In Mosfets, A. S. M. Shamsur Rouf Dec 2019

Identification And Characterization Of Gate Oxide Defects Responsible For Low Frequency Noise In Mosfets, A. S. M. Shamsur Rouf

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The main objective of this work is to identify and characterize gate oxide defects that are present in submicron p-channel metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (pMOSFETs) and which are responsible for random telegraph signals (RTS). With the downscaling of MOSFETs, alternating capture and emission of channel carriers by defects residing at the oxide-semiconductor interface and bulk oxide have become a pronounced problem. Even though RTS has been used for several years as a tool to characterize the interface/bulk defects, RTS in pMOSFETs has been under-reported compared to that in nMOSFETs, resulting in less information on hole defects in pMOSFETs …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Machine Learning (ML) has become an essential tool in answering complex predictive analytic queries. Model building for large scale datasets is one of the most time-consuming parts of the data science pipeline. Often data scientists are willing to sacrifice some accuracy in order to speed up this process during the exploratory phase. In this report, we aim to demonstrate ApproxML, a system that efficiently constructs approximate ML models for new queries from previously constructed ML models using the concepts of model materialization and reuse. ApproxML supports a wide variety of ML models such as generalized linear models for supervised learning …

Social Media Text Analysis Using Multi-Kernel Convolutional Neural Network, Anna Philips

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Transportation planners and ride hailing platforms such as Uber and Lyft use their riders feedback to assess their services and monitor customer satisfaction. Social media websites such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and in particular Twitter provides a large dataset of micro-texts by users who regularly post to their social media accounts about their grievances with their ride experience. This data is often unorganized and intractable to process because of it’s extremely large size which is continuously increasing daily. In this project, we collected ride hailing service relevant text data from Twitter around New York and developed a novel Convolutional Neural …

Distributed Deep Neural Networks Training For Brain Imaging Applications, Sudheer Raja Dec 2019

Distributed Deep Neural Networks Training For Brain Imaging Applications, Sudheer Raja

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Over the recent years, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have surpassed human-level intelligence in recognizing and interpreting complex patterns in data. Ever since the ImageNet competition in 2012, Deep Learning (DL) has become a promising approach for solving numerous problems in the field of Computer Science. However, the neuroscience community is not able to utilize the DL algorithms effectively because the brain imaging datasets are huge in terms of size, and the current sequential training techniques do not scale up well for such big datasets. Without the proper amount of training data, training DNN models to competitive accuracies is quite challenging. …

Comprehensive Study Of Generative Methods On Drug Discovery, Siyu Xiu Dec 2019

Comprehensive Study Of Generative Methods On Drug Discovery, Siyu Xiu

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Observing the recent success of the deep learning (DL) technology in multiple life-changing application areas, e.g., autonomous driving, image/video search and discovery, natural language processing, etc., many new opportunities have presented themselves. One of the biggest ones lies in applying DL in accelerating the drug discovery, where millions of human lives could potentially be saved. However, applying DL into the drug discovery task turns out to be non-trivial. The most successful DL methods take fix-sized tensors/matrices, e.g., images, or sequences of tokens, e.g., sentences with variant numbers of words, as their inputs. However, none of these registers with the inputs …

Deduplication-Aware Page Cache In Linux Kernel For Improved Read Performance, Venkata Satya Ravi Kiran Boggavarapu

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The amount of data being produced and consumed is increasing every day. As a result, there can be a large amount of redundant data in the storage system. Storing and accessing these duplicate data unnecessarily consumes disk space and I/O bandwidth. Deduplication techniques are widely deployed to remove the redundancy. In particular, the deduplication solutions that work at the block level are proven to be effective. These solutions aim to effectively use disk space and write bandwidth by avoiding duplicate data writes to the storage. However, such a design might not help in improving the read performance, which is critical …
