School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Environmentally transformative human use of land accelerated with the emergence of agriculture, but the extent, trajectory, and implications of these early changes are not well understood. An empirical global assessment of land use from 10,000 years before the present (yr B.P.) to 1850 CE reveals a planet largely transformed by hunter-gatherers, farmers, and pastoralists by 3000 years ago, considerably earlier than the dates in the land-use reconstructions commonly used by Earth scientists. Synthesis of knowledge contributed by more than 250 archaeologists highlighted gaps in archaeological expertise and data quality, which peaked for 2000 yr B.P. and in traditionally studied and …

Analysis Of Post-Translational Modifications And Expression Of Stat3 Under Desferrioxamine Induced Hypoxia In Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Veronica Harrison

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT:

Oxygen homeostasis is critical for optimal energy production in eukaryotic organisms. The signal transduction pathways involved with detection and mitigation of hypoxia have been carefully scrutinized in an effort to elucidate how metabolism and survival is maintained. Characterization of these pathways and their involvement in physiological processes such as blood cell production in the bone marrow and microvessel formation in developing embryos provides a model of how these functions are executed. Less well-characterized mechanisms in disease states such as solid tumors still confound researchers whose efforts to find effective treatments are falling short. Cancer cells exploit the activities …

Recurrent P16-Positive Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Associated Oral Lesions Treated With A Diode Laser: A Case Report, Margherita Eleonora Pezzi, Pietro Passerini, Marco Frontera, Paolo Vescovi, Marco Meleti

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Human papilloma virus (HPV) family include approximately 150 known subtypes of viruses that can infect humans and other animals. Among these, HPV-16 is known for its association with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), particularly within the oropharynx. HPV 16 genotype can be found in a variety of oral lesions, its presence being frequently observed in papillomas. Treatment of oral papillomas can sometimes be challenging as HPVs tend to shed to different oral sites, causing multifocal lesions. Moreover, HPV-related lesions tend to recur if incompletely removed. Several light-amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) wavelenghts are currently used in dentistry as …

Exercise-Induced Alterations In Sympathetic-Somatomotor Coupling In Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury, Tanya Onushko, Gordhan B. Mahtani, Gabrielle Brazg, T. George Hornby, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The aim of this study was to understand how high- and low-intensity locomotor training (LT) affects sympathetic-somatomotor (SS) coupling in people with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Proper coupling between sympathetic and somatomotor systems allows controlled regulation of cardiovascular responses to exercise. In people with SCI, altered connectivity between descending pathways and spinal segments impairs sympathetic and somatomotor coordination, which may have deleterious effects during exercise and limit rehabilitation outcomes. We postulated that high-intensity LT, which repeatedly engages SS systems, would alter SS coupling. Thirteen individuals (50 ± 7.2 years) with motor incomplete spinal cord injuries (American Spinal Injury Association …

Pain is an adverse experience and a motivating force which allows for effective responding to environmental threats. There has been limited research in how pain related consequences can be learned outside of direct experience. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a non-painful threatening stimulus can modulate pain behavior. Forty-three male participants were trained via a computer task to respond to a threatening visual symbol (i.e. learned-threat). Participants also completed a painful task, a cold-pressor task (CPT), prior to and after threat training and were randomly assigned to threat/non-threat conditions during a CPT after the threat training. Repeated …

Effects Of Environmental Enrichment In Maternally Separated Rats: Age And Sex-Specific Outcomes, Raura J. Doreste-Mendez, Efraín J. Ríos-Ruiz, Leslie L. Rivera-Lopez, Alfredo Gutierrez

School of Medicine Publications

Maternal separation (MS) early in life is related to an increase in anxiety and depressive-like behaviors and neurobiological alterations mostly related to alterations in hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity. Environmental enrichment (EE) has been used to ameliorate the effects of MS. However, the outcomes of this intervention at different developmental periods after MS have not been studied. We subjected male and female Sprague-Dawley pups to MS and subsequently compared the effects of EE started either in the pre-pubertal period [postnatal day (PND) 22] or adulthood (PND 78). Anxiety and depressive-like behaviors as well as in hippocampal synaptic density and …

A Mathematical Model For The Effect Of Domestic Animals On Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness), Sagi Shaier, Meghan Burke Aug 2019

A Mathematical Model For The Effect Of Domestic Animals On Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness), Sagi Shaier, Meghan Burke

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a parasite infection that is spread by the bites of tsetse flies and it is almost 100% fatal if left untreated (World Health Organization, “Neglected”). Our hypothesis is that by adding domestic animals to areas where humans are found (villages and plantations), we can reduce the amount of biting on humans, and therefore reduce the rate at which humans become infected. Numerical simulations supported our hypothesis, showing that increasing the number of domestic animals (pigs in our model) slows down the spread of the disease in both humans and domestic animals.
