Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes Jan 2019

Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Ecology is both blessed and burdened by romanticism, with a legacy that is multi-edged for health. The prefix ‘eco-’ can carry a cultural and political (subversive) baggage, associated with motivating environmental activism. Ecology is also practiced as a technical ‘science’, with quantitative and deterministic leanings and a biophysical emphasis. A challenge for planetary health is to avoid lapsing into, or rejecting, either position. A related opportunity is to adopt ecological thought that offers a rich entrance to understanding living systems: a relationality of connectedness, interdependence, and reciprocity to understand health in a complex and uncertain world. Planetary health offers a …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Work that addresses the cumulative impacts of resource extraction on environment, community, and health is necessarily large in scope. This paper presents experiences from initiating research at this intersection and explores implications for the ambitious, integrative agenda of planetary health. The purpose is to outline origins, design features, and preliminary insights from our intersectoral and international project, based in Canada and titled the “Environment, Community, Health Observatory” (ECHO) Network. With a clear emphasis on rural, remote, and Indigenous communities, environments, and health, the ECHO Network is designed to answer the question: How can an Environment, Community, Health Observatory Network support …

High-Rise Apartments And Urban Mental Health—Historical And Contemporary Views, Danica-Lea Larcombe, Eddie Van Etten, Alan Logan, Susan L. Prescott, Pierre Horwitz Jan 2019

High-Rise Apartments And Urban Mental Health—Historical And Contemporary Views, Danica-Lea Larcombe, Eddie Van Etten, Alan Logan, Susan L. Prescott, Pierre Horwitz

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

High-rise apartment buildings have long been associated with the poor mental health of their residents. The aims of this paper are to examine whether this connection is necessarily so, by reviewing the evidence relating to the relationships between high-rise living and social wellbeing, occupant’s stress levels, and the influence they have on mental health. From selected literature, psychological stress and poor mental health outcomes of the populations that live in high-rise apartments are indeed apparent, and this is particularly so for apartments in poor neighbourhoods. Yet many apartments in developed cities are in affluent areas (particularly those with views of …

Synthesis Report: Defining Thresholds And Indicators Of Primary Producer Response To Dredging-Related Pressures: Report Of Theme 5 Prepared For The Dredging Science Node, Paul Lavery, Kathryn Mcmahon, John Statton, Mat Vanderklift, Simone Strydom, Gary Kendrick Jan 2019

Synthesis Report: Defining Thresholds And Indicators Of Primary Producer Response To Dredging-Related Pressures: Report Of Theme 5 Prepared For The Dredging Science Node, Paul Lavery, Kathryn Mcmahon, John Statton, Mat Vanderklift, Simone Strydom, Gary Kendrick

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Seagrasses form a small component of a diverse group of organisms termed ‘benthic primary producers’. Benthic primary producers are organisms that grow on the sea-bed that obtain some or all of their energy needs from photosynthesis. This includes animals such as scleractinian corals and some sponges that host microscopic intercellular algae, coralline and turf algae, and the larger seaweeds such as the kelps and sargassum. Seagrasses are marine flowering plants, more closely related to land plants than seaweeds and algae. Seagrasses live mostly in soft sediments, and can be found from the shallow intertidal zone through to a depth of …

Relationships Between Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions And Tourist Satisfaction: A Cross-Country Cross-Sample Examination, Songshan (Sam) Huang, John Crotts Jan 2019

Relationships Between Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions And Tourist Satisfaction: A Cross-Country Cross-Sample Examination, Songshan (Sam) Huang, John Crotts

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Culture has been assumed to influence tourist behavior but due to the difficulty of measuring culture values directly at the individual level, the relationship between national culture and visitor satisfaction remains yet to be empirically attested. This study used two national level inbound tourist samples, i.e., Tourism Research Australia's 2017 International Visitor Survey holiday/pleasure travellers’ sample and the Hong Kong Tourist Satisfaction Index Project 2016 sample, to test the relationships between Hofstede's six cultural dimensions (Power Distance, Individualism/Collectivism, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long Term Orientation/Short Term Normative Orientation, and Indulgence/Restraint) and visitor satisfaction. Bivariate correlation with bootstrapping tests show consistent correlations …

Understanding Visitor Expectations For Responsible Tourism In An Iconic National Park: Differences Between Local And International Visitors, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Michael Hughes, Jenny Pope, Anneli Douglas, Jan-Albert Wessels Jan 2019

Understanding Visitor Expectations For Responsible Tourism In An Iconic National Park: Differences Between Local And International Visitors, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Michael Hughes, Jenny Pope, Anneli Douglas, Jan-Albert Wessels

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A survey on expectations for responsible tourism was administered to 201 visitors to the iconic Kruger National Park, comprising 55% South African nationals and 45% international tourists. Using Likert-scale questions, respondents were invited to indicate the level of importance they attached to 38 aspects of responsible tourism. Space was also provided for open comments. Conservation of biodiversity and geological features were rated very highly by both groups while aspects related to the local community, though considered important overall, were ranked lowest overall, with international tourists rating this category as more important than South Africans. Aspects related to traffic and access …
