Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Low Salinity Waterflooding (LSWF) has been intensively studied worldwide as it is a low-cost technique. By injecting water with very low salinity compared to formation water in the reservoir, the method changes equilibrium between rock surface, oil and surrounding water, causing wettability alteration through Multi-component Ion Exchange (MIE) mechanism. In this study, ammonium ion is added into low salinity water to facilitate the MIE mechanism in shaly-sandstones reservoir. Experiments are performed with shaly-sandstone rock as it contains both calcium and magnesium ions as part of clays and ammonium ion can express its potential by triggering MIE mechanism. Stirring test, spontaneous …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Macrophage plasticity is a process that allows macrophages to switch between two opposing phenotypes based on differential stimuli. Functional plasticity of macrophages contributes to disease pathogenesis such as cancer, metabolic diseases, autoimmune diseases and systemic infections. Epigenetics plays an important role in regulating this process. Macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (M(LPS)) produce high level of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-12, TNFα and IL-6 and low level of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, while macrophages stimulated with LPS in the presence of immune complex (IC) (M(IC)) produce high level of IL-10 and low level of IL-12. In this study, we investigated the plasticity …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Interferon (IFN)-λ is a relatively unexplored, yet promising anti-viral agent. IFN-λ has recently been tested in clinical trials of chronic hepatitis B, with the advantage that side effects may be limited compared with IFN-α, as IFN-λ receptors are found only in epithelial cells. To date, IFN-λ downstream signaling pathway remains largely unelucidated, particularly via proteomics methods. Here, we report that IFN-λ3 inhibits HBV replication in HepG2.2.15 cells, reducing levels of both HBV transcripts and intracellular HBV DNA. Quantitative proteomic analysis of HBV-transfected cells was performed following 24-hour IFN-λ3 treatment, with parallel IFN-α2a and PBS treatments for comparison using a dimethyl …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Sepsis is a severe response to systemic infection and one of the leading causes of death in patients world-wide. Bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide; LPS), is a potent inducer of inflammation that has been associated with the pathophysiology of sepsis. The repeated LPS exposure can induce a suppressive effect as refer to endotoxin tolerance. Fc gamma receptor IIb (CD32b), the only inhibitory receptor among FcGR family, associates with systemic lupus erythematosus (FcGRIIb defunctioning polymorphisms) which are commonly found in Asian populations. Because of an inhibitory nature of the signaling, endotoxin tolerance in lupus with FcGRIIb deficient (FcGRIIb-/-) is interesting and might be …

Migraine headache generates in trigeminal nociceptive system which is activated by cortical spreading depression (CSD) phenomenon. There are also some neurotransmitter changes relating to pathogenesis of migraine, one of representative examples is serotonin (5-HT) depletion that may predispose to migraine development. Trigeminal ganglion (TG) is a structure containing cell body of neurons that undertakes a role as first order neuron in trigeminal nociceptive system. Moreover, the alteration of glutamate may contribute to hyperactivity of its specific receptors, for instance N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Endogenous biomolecule, such as kynurenic acid (KYNA) which is derived form of 5-HT can inhibit NMDA receptor. Basically, …
