Evaluating The Need For Ocean Literacy In South Africa, Eugene Nyman
Evaluating The Need For Ocean Literacy In South Africa, Eugene Nyman
World Maritime University Dissertations
Pressures on the ocean are increasing due to anthropogenic activities, which has a caused decline in the health of the ocean. This has adversely affected the services and goods that populations are able to derive from the ocean. Various international agreements and partnerships, have been adopted to stem the human pressures on the ocean. However, the decline in the health of the ocean, has persisted. Ocean literacy is summarised by UNESCO (2017) as an individual being able to understand the influence they have on the ocean, and the ocean’s influence on their life. The concept has been developed with the …

Community-Based Organisations As An Approach To Effective Sustainable Artisan Fishing, Mary Mindi Wabit Epse Ngawana
World Maritime University Dissertations
Fishing in Cameroon is one of the main economic activities and lifeline of the coastal communities in the South West Region of Cameroon, especially the artisanal fishing which is mostly traditional and subsistence. Cameroon fisheries are either fully exploited or are already in the critical state of over-exploitation by foreigners and local communities. However, illegal fishing and aggressive fishing practices in the marine environment has led to over exploitation of the fisheries, mangroves and environmental deterioration. There is an urgent need to develop and introduce effective and efficient sustainable approaches, to the exploitation and management of Cameroon’s fisheries and other …

© 2018, The Author(s). The study investigates the in-situ strength of sediments across a plate boundary décollement using drilling parameters recorded when a 1180-m-deep borehole was established during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 370, Temperature-Limit of the Deep Biosphere off Muroto (T-Limit). Information of the in-situ strength of the shallow portion in/around a plate boundary fault zone is critical for understanding the development of accretionary prisms and of the décollement itself. Studies using seismic reflection surveys and scientific ocean drillings have recently revealed the existence of high pore pressure zones around frontal accretionary prisms, which may reduce the effective …

Learning How To Learn: Powerful Mental Tools To Help You Master Tough Subject, Barbara Oakley
Innovation in Pedagogy and Technology Symposium
Barbara Oakley didn’t begin learning remedial high school algebra until age 26. Now she’s a professor of engineering, a New York Times best-selling author, and instructor of the world’s largest massive open online course, with nearly two million registered students. How did this happen? She learned how to learn, and she now teaches others these practical insights. In this fun-filled keynote, you’ll hear true stories of remarkable transformation and discover intriguing insights from science about how you can change and grow, no matter your age or stage of life.

Relationships Exist Between Chemistry Self-Efficacy In College Students And Academic Outcomes In Chemical Education, Daniel Teoli
Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Introductory and preparatory chemistry courses hold a particular importance to students across a wide range of academic specialties and majors. In addition to serving as a potential primer for students interested in the possibility of majoring in chemistry, introductory and preparatory chemical education has been actively integrated into the curriculum of other fields within the natural science spectrum (such as biology and physics). Additionally, under the umbrella of requisite coursework, it has gained a strong pertinence to applied sciences such as nursing, engineering, and exercise physiology (Tai, Sadler, and Loehr 2005).

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Over the past several decades, extensive observation and analysis of termite behavior has taken place within the scientific community. One of the topics at the forefront of pertinent research involves exploring the behavioral intricacies of these small eusocial insects (Witting 2007), as well as their specialized reliance on certain chemical secretions [or pheromones] to remain biologically successful within their respective native environments (Matsuura et al. 2010).

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review
Recent advances in nanomaterials synthesis and engineering have made an impact on a number of fields. For instance, in nanoelectronics, single walled carbon nanotubes have been used as thin-film semiconductor for miniaturized transistors (Kang 2007), while in photonics, biology or medicine carbon nanotubes have been investigated as highly specific biomolecule detectors (Chen 2003; Kempa 2003; Liu 2009). Other nanomaterials, such as titanium dioxide, had shown a strong ability to decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen and were used for cancer treatments (Kubota 1994). By interfacing nanomaterials with biological molecules novel applications have emerged ranging from diagnostics, to drug delivery and …

Leaf-cutter bees (genus Megachile Latreille) are among the most common and diverse group of bees. However, the identity and taxonomic placement of many species are problematic and species identification is often difficult. Some species are known only from a single specimen or from one of the sexes, and identification keys are not available for many groups. We address these taxonomic issues for the subgenera Rhyssomegachile Mitchell and Zonomegachile Mitchell, two poorly known South American lineages of leaf-cutter bees. We provide comparative diagnoses, redescriptions, illustrated identification keys, new geographical records, and designate needed neotypes for Megachile cara Mitchell, M. gigas Schrottky, …
Assessing The Impacts Of Library Instruction Sessions On Knowledge Acquisition And Retention In Biology Undergraduates, Aditi Bandyopadhyay
Assessing The Impacts Of Library Instruction Sessions On Knowledge Acquisition And Retention In Biology Undergraduates, Aditi Bandyopadhyay
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
This study assessed the effectiveness of one-shot library instruction sessions on knowledge acquisition and retention in Biology undergraduate students. In early Spring 2018 semester, the students enrolled in six sessions of Bio 112 at Adelphi University attended library instruction classes to learn about scientific literature. One-shot library instruction sessions were conducted to teach students in each section how to identify research, review and popular science magazine articles. A post-instruction test was conducted in late April and early May, 2018, to determine whether the students retained information from library instruction classes. The responses from both pre- and post-instruction sessions were compared …
