Summer Research Students: One Scholarly Publishing Program To Serve Them All?, Michelle Price Nov 2018

Summer Research Students: One Scholarly Publishing Program To Serve Them All?, Michelle Price

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

For 2018, the Center for Student Research at St. John Fisher College intentionally sought to diversify the disciplines participating in the summer undergraduate research program. Previously, only the Biology and Chemistry departments and Wegmans School of Nursing had participated in the program. This cycle, 30% of the students were a humanities or social science major. The Science Librarian had offered a ten week online module on scholarly publishing as an option for the summer researchers in the past. Now, the scope of participants was broader, so how did the scholarly publishing program need to adapt? Did the program need broader …

Recruitment, Survival, And Parasitism Of Monarch Butterflies (Danaus Plexippus) In Milkweed Gardens And Conservation Areas, Emily A. Geest, L. Lareesa Wolfenbarger, John P. Mccarty Nov 2018

Recruitment, Survival, And Parasitism Of Monarch Butterflies (Danaus Plexippus) In Milkweed Gardens And Conservation Areas, Emily A. Geest, L. Lareesa Wolfenbarger, John P. Mccarty

Biology Faculty Publications

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are suffering from declining populations and conservationists have encouraged planting milkweed gardens in urban and suburban landscapes to help offset habitat loss across the breeding range. The effectiveness of gardens as a conservation strategy depends on their ability to attract ovipositing adults and the survival of monarch larvae in these gardens. Larvae are susceptible to a variety of predators as well as to parasitism by a tachinid fly (Lespesia archippivora) and a protozoan parasite (Ophryocystis elektroscirrha) which cause lethal or sublethal effects, yet the severity of these risks in gardens …

Measuring And Modeling Evolution Of Cryoconite Holes In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Felix Jacob Zamora Nov 2018

Measuring And Modeling Evolution Of Cryoconite Holes In The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Felix Jacob Zamora

Dissertations and Theses

Cryoconite holes are vertical columns of meltwater within the shallow subsurface of glaciers. In the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of Antarctica cryoconite holes are a source of meltwater and harbor microbial communities in an otherwise arid environment with low biologic activity. The holes form as sediments on the ice surface, which are darker than the surrounding ice, are preferentially heated by solar radiation. The warm sediments melt the underlying ice and migrate downwards. An ice lid forms, isolating them from the below-freezing atmosphere enabling them to remain thawed. In this study, field observations, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling are used …

Carboxypeptidase O Is A Lipid Droplet-Associated Enzyme Able To Cleave Both Acidic And Polar C-Terminal Amino Acids, Linnea C. Burke, Hazel O. Ezeribe, Anna Y. Kwon, Donnell Dockery, Peter J. Lyons Nov 2018

Carboxypeptidase O Is A Lipid Droplet-Associated Enzyme Able To Cleave Both Acidic And Polar C-Terminal Amino Acids, Linnea C. Burke, Hazel O. Ezeribe, Anna Y. Kwon, Donnell Dockery, Peter J. Lyons

Faculty Publications

Carboxypeptidase O (CPO) is a member of the M14 family of metallocarboxypeptidases with a preference for the cleavage of C-terminal acidic amino acids. CPO is largely expressed in the small intestine, although it has been detected in other tissues such as the brain and ovaries. CPO does not contain a prodomain, nor is it strongly regulated by pH, and hence appears to exist as a constitutively active enzyme. The goal of this study was to investigate the intracellular distribution and activity of CPO in order to predict physiological substrates and function. The distribution of CPO, when expressed in MDCK cells, …

Making Outreach The Library’S Mission, April Miller Nov 2018

Making Outreach The Library’S Mission, April Miller

Faculty Articles & Research

University and community outreach is an important part of library services, which fosters cohesiveness while involving adequate community support. This paper examines how outreach has become an important part of the library’s mission. Many outreach examples include the partnering of libraries with university departments, offices, and organizations. Other examples include university libraries partnering with community groups, museums, and non-profits. Currently outreach projects are carried out across all libraries, however, a greater emphasis is placed on the recent outreach accomplished at Southwestern Oklahoma State University Libraries.

Dietary Protein Restriction Reduces Circulating Vldl Triglyceride Levels Via Crebh-Apoa5-Dependent And -Independent Mechanisms, J Humberto Treviño-Villarreal, Valeria Tosti, Nicola Veronese, Beatrice Bertozzi, Arnold D Bullock, Robert S Figenshau, Gerald L Andriole, Luigi Fontana, Et Al

Open Access Publications

Hypertriglyceridemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Dietary interventions based on protein restriction (PR) reduce circulating triglycerides (TGs), but underlying mechanisms and clinical relevance remain unclear. Here, we show that 1 week of a protein-free diet without enforced calorie restriction significantly lowered circulating TGs in both lean and diet-induced obese mice. Mechanistically, the TG-lowering effect of PR was due, in part, to changes in very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) metabolism both in liver and peripheral tissues. In the periphery, PR stimulated VLDL-TG consumption by increasing VLDL-bound APOA5 expression and promoting VLDL-TG hydrolysis and clearance from circulation. The PR-mediated increase …

What Are We? The Ontology Of Subjects Of Experience, Jenny Hung Nov 2018

What Are We? The Ontology Of Subjects Of Experience, Jenny Hung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

What am I? There are a number of possible answers: I am a person, a mind, a human animal, a soul, part of a human being (e.g., a brain), I do not exist, and even more. Philosophers have been asking this for thousands of years and were not satisfied. In the contemporary analytic tradition, philosophers are attracted to a naturalistic, scientific ontology hence a materialistic personal ontology that matches the huge success in scientific discoveries. They think that we are material objects. However, their views do not match our intuition about some cases regarding our survival. Also, the possibility of …

Integrating Towed Underwater Video With Multibeam Acoustics For Mapping Benthic Habitat And Assessing Reef Fish Communities On The West Florida Shelf, Alexander Ross Ilich Nov 2018

Integrating Towed Underwater Video With Multibeam Acoustics For Mapping Benthic Habitat And Assessing Reef Fish Communities On The West Florida Shelf, Alexander Ross Ilich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using a towed underwater video camera system, benthic habitats were classified along transects in a popular offshore fishing area on the West Florida Shelf (WFS) known as “The Elbow.” Additionally, high resolution multibeam bathymetry and co-registered backscatter data were collected for the entire study area. Using these data, full coverage geologic and biotic habitat maps were developed using both unsupervised and supervised statistical classification methodologies. The unsupervised methodology used was k-means clustering, and the supervised methodology used a random forest algorithm. The two methods produced broadly similar results; however, the supervised methodology outperformed the unsupervised methodology. The results of the …

Exploring Explicit Fanfiction As A Vehicle For Sex Education Among Adolescents And Young Adults, Donna Jeanne Barth Nov 2018

Exploring Explicit Fanfiction As A Vehicle For Sex Education Among Adolescents And Young Adults, Donna Jeanne Barth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fanfiction consists of works written by amateurs using pre-existing characters and plots, often shared online for free. Although fanfiction began long before the advent of the internet, the worldwide web has created a platform wherein fanfiction is allowed and encouraged to spread almost unconditionally, reaching new populations and rising slowly but surely into the public eye. As the internet has made fanfiction more accessible and public, it has also increased the number of children and young adults involved in the process. And in the unsupervised wilderness of the internet, sexual content is a common feature of fanfiction, with a varying …

Use Of A Towed Camera System Along The West Florida Shelf: A Case Study Of The Florida Middle Grounds Benthic Marine Communities, Katie S. Davis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As technologies advance the study of ocean dynamics, new approaches to vexing problems of scale and process are becoming more widely available. Originally conceived as a tool primarily for indexing the abundance of near-bottom fishes, the Camera-based Assessment and Survey System (C-BASS) may also be an effective tool for monitoring benthic invertebrate resources vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic perturbations, and for characterizing the composition of benthic communities to inform spatial management. Using still images derived from the C-BASS video of benthic transects within the Florida Middle Grounds, I documented the abundance of benthic habitat-forming functional groups—sponges, algae, and corals—and noted …

Evaluating Human-Associated Escherichia Coli Marker Genes For Microbial Source Tracking Applications In Florida, Jacob K. Senkbeil Nov 2018

Evaluating Human-Associated Escherichia Coli Marker Genes For Microbial Source Tracking Applications In Florida, Jacob K. Senkbeil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fecal pollution of surface water can lead to human health issues because waterborne transmission of pathogens is a common cause of gastroenteritis. Genetic markers developed for human-associated Escherichia coli (H8, H12, H14, and H24) are promising tools for microbial source tracking (MST) of sewage in environmental waterbodies but are untested in the US. H gene marker performance characteristics (specificity, sensitivity, and prevalence) were assessed, with the goal of developing a quantitative PCR assay for the markers with the best performance. Individual E. coli isolates from reference samples were tested to determine end-point PCR assay performance. Three hundred E. coli strains …

The Unanticipated Benefits Of Academic Research, Molly Simis

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

I recently completed my Biology Honors Thesis, which was based on a project that began my freshmen year concerning the population genetics of a beautiful dwarf dogwood species that grows in a unique ice‑vent system in West Virginia. The products of my time in the lab include so much more than my thesis paper and presentation that were the culmination of three summers and five semesters of research. Among other things, my experience in undergraduate research helped direct the trajectory of my career plans and led to the creation of this journal.

Capillary Electrophoresis: A Method For Evolution And Analysis Of Molecular Recognition Elements, Briana D. Vecchio Nov 2018

Capillary Electrophoresis: A Method For Evolution And Analysis Of Molecular Recognition Elements, Briana D. Vecchio

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Molecular Recognition Elements (MREs) are compounds capable of binding a variety of inorganic and biological molecules. These MREs have a variety of applications including incorporation into biosensors, drug discovery, diagnostic testing, and therapeutics. MREs are evolved via a generalized process known as the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment, or SELEX. Traditional SELEX techniques have limited the variety MREs which can be derived for a given target, and can take several days to complete. Capillary Electrophoresis has emerged as an alternative method for evolution of MREs. It allows for evolution of MREs with increased affinity for a given target …

Cautious Realism And Middle Range Ontology, P.D. Magnus Nov 2018

Cautious Realism And Middle Range Ontology, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Anjan Chakravartty's book Scientific Ontology is centrally about how metaphysics is embrangled with epistemology. I begin by discussing the broader literature in science and values, where arguments akin to Chakravartty's have been much-discussed. Then I talk about my own preferred approach, middle range ontology, which does not fit neatly into any of the three stances Chakravartty discusses. Finally, I use these considerations to pose a dilemma.
