The Unbearable Lightness Of Dis|Appearing Mathematics: Or, Life And Reason For The Citizen At Times Of Crisis, Anna Chronaki

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In the early 1960s, Ursula Le Guin wrote ‘The Masters’, a short novel that offers a sharp contrast to the ‘maths for all’ discourse of contemporary mathematics education reforms. Le Guin writes of a world – Edun – where ‘mathematical prohibition’ is law. Mathematical reason is banned for all people by the Priests of Edun, and failure to obey is punishable by death. Despite the threat of this totalitarian anti-math regime, some citizens create a collective heterotopia in which they practice mathematics in secret. Le Guin’s story is an opportunity to conduct a thought experiment: ‘what if maths became forbidden?’ …

A Review Of The Bidirectional Relationship Between Psychiatric Disorders And Diabetes Mellitus, Abdulrahman A. Al-Atram Jan 2018

A Review Of The Bidirectional Relationship Between Psychiatric Disorders And Diabetes Mellitus, Abdulrahman A. Al-Atram

Neurosciences

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is rising worldwide, including Saudi Arabia. Among patients with diabetes, 30% suffer from mental disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, delirium, and substance misuse (for example, tobacco smoking). Moreover, these disorders appear to share a bidirectional relationship with diabetes. For example, the incidence of diabetes has been shown to be 2-4 times greater in patients with schizophrenia than in normal individuals; also, there is a known association between depression and diabetes. In this review, we focus specifically on the bidirectional relationship between diabetes and psychiatric disorders, including the effects of antipsychotic drugs.

Neurometabolic Disorders And Congenital Malformations Of The Central Nervous System, Ahmed Y. Boali, Majid Alfadhel, Brahim Tabarki Jan 2018

Neurometabolic Disorders And Congenital Malformations Of The Central Nervous System, Ahmed Y. Boali, Majid Alfadhel, Brahim Tabarki

Neurosciences

Both malformations of the central nervous system and neurometabolic disorders are common, mainly in highly consanguineous populations. Both metabolic pathways and developmental pathways are closely related and interact with each other. Neurometabolic disorders can lead to disturbances in brain development through multiple mechanisms that include deficits in energy metabolism, critical nutrient deficiency, accumulation of neurotoxic substrates, abnormality in cell membrane constituents, and interference in cell-to-cell signaling pathways. The anomalies observed include absent or hypoplastic corpus callosum, midline brain defects, and malformations of the cortex, the cerebellum and the brain stem. Early diagnosis of an underlying inherited neurometabolic disorders is critical …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Shiga toxin (Stxs) is a family of structurally and functionally related bacterial cytotoxins produced by Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 and shigatoxigenic group of Escherichia coli that cause shigellosis and hemorrhagic colitis, respectively. Until recently, it has been thought that Stxs only inhibits the protein synthesis and induces expression to a limited number of genes in host cells, but recent data showed that Stxs can trigger several signaling pathways in mammalian cells and activate cell cycle and apoptosis. To explore the changes in gene expression induced by Stxs that have been shown in other systems to correlate with cancer progression, we …

Parental Prisoners: The Incarcerated Mother's Constitutional Right To Parent, Emily Halter

Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology

The United States prison population has grown at alarming and unprecedented rates in recent decades, with certain states imprisoning more individuals than entire countries. Recently, the number of incarcerated women has climbed faster than that of men. The high rate of female incarceration has devastating effects on society, as many women are mothers and primary caregivers. Furthermore, every year, a number of mothers give birth in prison. When this happens, the mother’s family and loved ones are often not permitted to be present. The mother gives birth in a room with only medical personnel and prison guards. She then generally …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Pathogens are recognized as major drivers of local adaptation in wildlife systems. By determining which gene variants are favored in local interactions among populations with and without disease, spatially explicit adaptive responses to pathogens can be elucidated. Much of our current understanding of host responses to disease comes from a small number of genes associated with an immune response. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies, such as genotype-by-sequencing (GBS), facilitate expanded explorations of genomic variation among populations. Hybridization-based GBS techniques can be leveraged in systems not well characterized for specific variants associated with disease outcome to “capture” specific genes and regulatory regions …

Does The Foundational Model Of Anatomy Ontology Provide A Knowledge Base For Learning And Assessment In Anatomy Education?, Melissa D. Clarkson, Mark E. Whipple

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

Throughout the development of the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) ontology, one of the use cases put forth has been anatomy education. In this work, we examine which types of knowledge taught to anatomy students can be supported by the FMA knowledge base. We first categorize types of anatomical knowledge, then express these patterns in the form “Given ____, state ____”. Each of the 33 patterns was evaluated for whether this type of knowledge is compatible with the modeling and scope of the FMA.

Validating Spray Coverage Rate Using Liquid Mass On A Spray Card, Michael P. Sama, Austin M. Weiss, Emma K. Benedict Jan 2018

Validating Spray Coverage Rate Using Liquid Mass On A Spray Card, Michael P. Sama, Austin M. Weiss, Emma K. Benedict

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Validation of agricultural sprayers is important for quantifying as-applied coverage rates under field conditions. The complexity of modern sprayer control systems presents a challenge for precise field validation due to the use of nozzle control technologies, such as pulse width modulation, to meter chemical flow rates at individual nozzles. Non-uniform flow over time may result in local variations at high spatial resolutions that are ignored when estimating as-applied coverage rates across a field. The purpose of this study was to test several methods for estimating the mass of water applied to a water-sensitive paper spray card target using steady-state and …

Application Of Acoustic Emission And Machine Learning To Detect Codling Moth Infested Apples, Mengxing Li, Nader Ekramirad, Ahmed Rady, Akinbode A. Adedeji

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Incidence of codling moth (CM) (Cydia pomonella L.) infestation in apples has been a major concern in North America for decades. CM larvae bore deep into the fruit, making it unmarketable. An effective noninvasive method to detect larvae-infested apples is necessary to ensure that apples are CM-free in post-harvest processing. In this study, a novel approach using an acoustic emission (AE) system and subsequent machine learning methods was applied to classify larvae-infested apples from intact apples. 'GoldRush‘ apples were infested with CM neonates and stored at the same conditions as intact apples. The AE system was used to collect …

Hydraulic Properties Of Baled Switchgrass And Miscanthus, Drew F. Schiavone, Michael D. Montross

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

This study characterized the hydraulic properties within baled switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L., variety Alamo) and miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus), thereby enabling a better understanding of moisture changes in baled biomass during on-farm storage and/or high-solids bioconversion. Fully saturated bales were drained by gravity, and the moisture content was determined over 60 h. The average initial moisture content ranged between 55.9% and 71.9% (w.b.) for switchgrass and between 60.5% and 73.9% (w.b.) for miscanthus bales depending on the dry bale density. As the bale drained by gravity, rapid leaching of water was observed within the first 0.1 h, …

Improving In-Stream Nutrient Routines In Water Quality Models Using Stable Isotope Tracers: A Review And Synthesis, Alexandria K. Jensen, William I. Ford, James F. Fox, Admin Husic Jan 2018

Improving In-Stream Nutrient Routines In Water Quality Models Using Stable Isotope Tracers: A Review And Synthesis, Alexandria K. Jensen, William I. Ford, James F. Fox, Admin Husic

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Water quality models serve as an economically feasible alternative to quantify fluxes of nutrient pollution and to simulate effective mitigation strategies; however, their applicability is often questioned due to broad uncertainties in model structure and parameterization, leading to uncertain outputs. We argue that reduction of uncertainty is partially achieved by integrating stable isotope data streams within the water quality model architecture. This article outlines the use of stable isotopes as a response variable within water quality models to improve the model boundary conditions associated with nutrient source provenance, constrain model parameterization, and elucidate shortcomings in the model structure. To assist …

Equal Protection For Equal Play: A Constitutional Solution To Gender Discrimination In International Sports, Jenna N. Rowan Jan 2018

Equal Protection For Equal Play: A Constitutional Solution To Gender Discrimination In International Sports, Jenna N. Rowan

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Note considers the extent of gender discrimination in international sports, providing an overview of gender discrimination in sports and detailing the inadequacies of current statutory remedies. Additionally, this Note describes why constitutional remedies are unavailable for these athletes, highlighting a 1987 Supreme Court case holding that sports governing bodies are not state actors. This Note proposes overruling that case to hold instead that international sports governing bodies are state actors and are, therefore, subject to the provisions in the US Constitution. Under this solution, international athletes could bring gender discrimination claims against these bodies under an equal protection rationale.
