© 2018 Author(s). Incident solar radiation absorbed within the ablation zone of glaciers generates a shallow perched aquifer and seasonal icebound microbial habitat. During the melt seasons of 2014 and 2015, borehole investigations were used to examine the physical, geochemical, and microbiological properties in the near-surface ice and aquifer of the temperate Matanuska Glacier (south-central Alaska). Based on temperature, solar forcing, and ice optical properties, the dissipation of shortwave radiation promoted internal melting and the formation of a weathering crust with a maximum depth of ∼2 m. Boreholes into the weathering crust provided access to water percolating through the porous …
The Role Of Epistemic Beliefs About Authority And Source Presence On Multiple Text Comprehension, Erica Kessler
The Role Of Epistemic Beliefs About Authority And Source Presence On Multiple Text Comprehension, Erica Kessler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The current research examined the role of epistemic beliefs about authority as well as source presence influence multiple text comprehension. Our sample was insensitive to our manipulation of source information availability (no source information, source information, embedded source information), however, several interesting relationships between the individual differences and measures of multiple text comprehension were observed. Prior knowledge was positively related to accurate essay information as well as source mentions in essays and rank-order justifications. In addition, justification by authority beliefs emerged as a positive predictor of source mentions in essays. Misconceptions about vaccines emerged a negative predictor of inclusion of …
Parallel Adaptive Collapsed Gibbs Sampling, Craig Nathan Kelly
Parallel Adaptive Collapsed Gibbs Sampling, Craig Nathan Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Rao-Blackwellisation is a technique that provably improves the performance of Gibbs sampling by summing-out variables from the PGM. However, collapsing variables is computationally expensive, since it changes the PGM structure introducing factors whose size is dependent upon the Markov blanket of the variable. Therefore, collapsing out several variables jointly is typically intractable in arbitrary PGM structures. This thesis proposes an adaptive approach for Rao-Blackwellisation, where additional parallel Markov chains are defined over different collapsed PGM structures. The collapsed variables are chosen based on their convergence diagnostics. Adding chains requires re-burn-in the chain, thus wasting samples. To address this, new chains …

Development And Impact Of A Stem Educational Outreach Program For K-12 Students, Holland Maye Aguayo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Studies show that K-12 students struggle more with math and science courses than other topics, which can deter K-12 students from pursuing opportunities in these fields. This leads to a shortage of STEM workers while job opportunities in STEM continue to grow at a faster pace than others. The STEM Ambassador program is designed to increase K-12 students’ interest in and preparation for STEM opportunities through employing undergraduate students as mentors, STEM activity leaders and tutors in K-12 schools. Impact of the program was assessed by analysis of K-12 student test score data and survey data from K-12 students, K-12 …
Defining Diagnosis: A Reflexive Account Of A Chronic Dis-Ease Process, Brandi Michelle Barnes
Defining Diagnosis: A Reflexive Account Of A Chronic Dis-Ease Process, Brandi Michelle Barnes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This is an autoethnographic account of the experience of living with chronic illness and a liminal status. This reflexive study is divided into three parts: 1) Lupus, the defining diagnosis, 2) Dis-ease, identity and reevaluation 3) Dis-identification, chronic dis-ease, and liminality. Throughout, music lyrics and my own poetry are used to represent my fluctuating identity. Systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) is a rare yet complex disease. The etiology is constantly questioned by doctors and not readily seen; it is both contested and invisible. Patients with this illness are highly stigmatized, and their psychological welfare can become neglected in a biomedical system …

Use of knee joint finite element models for diagnostic purposes is challenging due to their complexity. Therefore, simpler models are needed for studies where a high number of patients need to be analyzed, without compromising the results of the model. In this study, more complex, kinetic (forces and moments) and simpler, kinetic-kinematic (forces and angles) driven finite element models were compared during the stance phase of gait. Patella and tendons were included in the most complex model, while they were absent in the simplest model. The greatest difference between the most complex and simplest models was observed in the internal-external …

Fourier ptychographic microscopy is a technique that achieves a high space-bandwidth product, i.e. high resolution and high field-of-view. In Fourier ptychographic microscopy, variable illumination patterns are used to collect multiple low-resolution images. These low-resolution images are then computationally combined to create an image with resolution exceeding that of any single image from the microscope. Due to the necessity of acquiring multiple low-resolution images, Fourier ptychographic microscopy has poor temporal resolution. Our aim is to improve temporal resolution in Fourier ptychographic microscopy, achieving single-shot imaging without sacrificing space-bandwidth product. We use example-based super-resolution to achieve this goal by trading off generality …

Cassava As An Insurance Crop In A Changing Climate: The Changing Role And Potential Applications Of Cassava For Smallholder Farmers In Northeastern Thailand, Anan Polthanee
Forest and Society
Approximately 80 percent of the 22 million people in Northeastern Thailand are engaged in agriculture, and the per capita income of the region is lower than in any other part of Thailand. The major constraint to crop production is rainfall. Although the region has an average annual rainfall greater than 1200 mm, the seasonal distribution of rainfall makes for challenging agricultural cultivation opportunities. The climate is characterized by rainy (May-October) and dry (November-April) seasons. Most (90%) farming is cultivated under rainfed conditions. In addition, most soils are characterized by a sandy texture, high acidity, low organic matter, low level of …

Temporal Changes In The Diversity And Composition Of Tropical Andean Forest Communities, Claudia Andrea Aparicio-Chavez
Theses
During the last few thousand years, human population growth and resource use has been reshaping the planet’s nutrient cycles, climate and biodiversity and might be causing significant changes to spatial and temporal patterns in the distribution of species, and a general erosion of biodiversity at global scales. Many studies have been looking to model and predict how species could respond to actual rates of change on environmental conditions, with a high interest in terms of species distribution and richness with potential extinctions. However, how global change impact local communities still remains unclear. Moreover, previous research suffers from a significant bias …

Quantification of evapotranspiration (ET) is crucial for understanding the water balance and for efficient water resources planning. Agricultural settings have received most attention regarding ET measurements while less knowledge is available for actual ET (ETA) in natural ecosystems, many of which have soils containing significant amounts of stones. This study is focused on modelling ETA from stony soil, particularly in montane ecosystems where we estimate the contribution of stone content on water retention properties in soil. We employed a numerical model (HYDRUS-1D) to simulate ETA in natural settings in northern Utah and southern Idaho during the …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers
BACKGROUND: Germline mutations in BAP1 have been associated with BAP1-Tumor Predisposition Syndrome (BAP1-TPDS), a predisposition to multiple tumors within a family that includes uveal melanoma (UM), cutaneous melanoma, malignant mesothelioma and renal cell carcinoma. Alternatively, somatic mutations in BAP1 in UM have been associated with high risk for metastasis. In this study, we compare the risk of metastasis in UM that carry germline versus somatic BAP1 mutations and mutation-negative tumors.
METHODS: DNA extracted from 142 UM and matched blood samples was sequenced using Sanger or next generation sequencing to identify BAP1 gene mutations.
RESULTS: Eleven of 142 UM (8%) carried …

Constructing A Data-Based Mortality Profile For Avian Tower Kills At Telecommunication Towers In Illinois, Rachel Dipietro
Theses and Dissertations
During spring and fall seasons, Neotropical migratory passerines travel nocturnally across the Western Hemisphere between their wintering and breeding grounds, often encountering man-made threats. One hazard that has gained considerable publicity in recent decades is the communication tower. While there have been many tower kill studies recorded, there has been no attempt at predicting the risk of towers based on their different attributes (e.g., height, type of light, landscape placement) spatially on a regional scale. The objective of this study was to create seasonal mortality profile maps in GIS for Illinois, based on tower attributes combined with key factors such …

Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection
This interview with Eric Kawamoto reveals a journey of self-discovery in Chicago, L.A., Boston, and Portland; an intersection between being Asian American and being queer; and survival of AIDS as a result of reserve. Kawamoto places these personal themes among his account of the LGBTQ+ and Asian American communities’ overarching struggles, like the fight for domestic partnership benefits, representation of Asian American gay men, and spreading awareness about Japanese American internment in California.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lipid droplets (LDs) in the liver. Here, we explore the composition of hepatic LDs in a rat model of AFLD. Five to seven weeks of alcohol consumption led to significant increases in hepatic triglyceride mass, along with increases in LD number and size. Additionally, hepatic LDs from rats with early alcoholic liver injury show a decreased ratio of surface phosphatidylcholine (PC) to phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). This occurred in parallel with an increase in the LD association of perilipin 2, a prominent LD protein. To determine if changes to the …
