Kinematics And Kinetics Of Swing Leg In Curved Sprint Running, Kazuhiro Ishimura, Shinji Sakurai
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate kinematics and kinetics of left and right swing legs in curved sprint running. Nine male sprinters and decathletes participated in this study. Participants run 60m on the curved path and their motion was recorded by a motion capture system. The joint angle, angular velocity, moment and power of both swing legs were calculated. For the statistical test, a statistical parametric mapping was used. There were no kinematic and kinetic differences in the hip joint. However, asymmetries were found in the knee joint. Runners may just move swing legs same as straight running/sprinting.

Acceleration Transmitted To The Human Body During Cycling: Effect Of A Road Bike Damping System, Josef Viellehner, Wolfgang Potthast
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The objective of this study was to examine the influence of a road bike damping system on accelerations transmitted to the cyclist. Thirty male subjects performed trials with and without vibration on a damped and non-damped road racing bike at three different power level. Three-dimensional accelerations at thigh, shank, lower back, acromion, neck and forearm were recorded to quantify the athlete-bike interaction. Vibrations were found to effect the entire body significantly. Significant differences regarding the damped and non-damped bike were observed for the vibrations transmitted to the upper body, while lower extremity loading was comparable. Therefore road bike damping reduces …

Can Inertial Measurement Units Be Used To Validly Measure Pelvis And Thorax Motion During Cricket Bowling?, Daniel Cottam, Steven Kosovich, Amity Campbell, Paul Davey, Peter Kent, Jay-Shian Tan, Bruce Elliott, Jacqueline Alderson
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Identifying lumbar injury risk amongst cricket bowlers is a challenge to those involved in the sport. Bowling technique injury risk factors concerning thoracic and pelvic motion have been identified by previous research that used three-dimensional (3D) retro-reflective (RR) motion analysis. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are considered a feasible and more portable means of 3D motion analysis. However, the validity of IMU measurement of thorax and pelvis movement during bowling has not yet been fully determined. This study aimed to achieve this by comparing concurrent IMU and RR angle outputs. Results suggest that when RR coordinate systems are aligned with IMUs’ …

Comparison Of Step-By-Step Kinematics Of Normal And Assisted 60 M Sprints With Different Loads In Experienced Sprinters, Roland Van Den Tillaar
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to compare step-by-step kinematics of normal and assisted 60 m sprints with different loads in experienced sprinters. Step-by-step kinematics were measured using inertial measurement units integrated with a 3-axis gyroscope and a laser gun in eleven participants during a normal 60 m sprint and sprints with a 3, 4, or 5kg pulling force. The main findings were that using increased assisted loads resulted in faster 60 m times, which was a result of a higher step velocity caused mainly by longer step lengths. In terms of practical application, it is notable that employing this …

Open Science: A Review On Open Peer Review Literature, Oluwaseyi Wusu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Peer review truly, is the king in scientific communication –however, traditional peer review has been accused of many irregularities such as inconsistency and unrealistic peer reviewing, methodology flaws, and the likes. Despite all these irregularities, scholars still believe in peer review but new ways of opening up peer reviews are encouraged. There were high levels of backing for most of the attributes of OPR, such as disclosing identities of reviewers, open reports, open interaction, open platform, commenting on the final-version of published articles or data. Furthermore, the idea of supplementing pre-publication peer review with some form of post-publication evaluation would …

This study analysed the difference of motion between affected arm position in Para-Taekwondo roundhouse kick (right leg kick with right affected rear arm/P-TKD-R and left leg kick with right affected frontal arm/P-TKD-L) compared with a Taekwondo roundhouse kick (TKD). The results were summarized as follows: i) Distribution of using arm for helping upper torso and pelvis rotation was depending on unaffected arm; ii) P-TKD-L (affected frontal arm) firstly generate upper torso rotation; and iii) As for kicking speed, P-TKD-R (affected rear arm) was the same as TKD with whip-like-motion. Considered together, our data suggests that affected arm position affected mechanisms …
Effect Of The Timing Of The Pole Plant On Energy Loss In The Pole Vault Take-Off, Nicholas P. Linthorne
Effect Of The Timing Of The Pole Plant On Energy Loss In The Pole Vault Take-Off, Nicholas P. Linthorne
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Some leading pole vault coaches recommend a late planting of the pole, at close to the instant of take-off. This technique is believed to reduce the energy lost during the take-off and produce a higher vault. The present study re-analysed data from a previous study in which male pole vaulters manipulated the timing of the pole plant. An individual analysis showed that the timing of the pole plant did not clearly affect the change in the total energy of the athlete/pole system during the take-off. This result suggests there might be no advantage in using a late pole plant. An …

Kinetics Of Single Session Intra-Individual Difference In Sprint Acceleration: A Case Study, Ryu Nagahara
ISBS Proceedings Archive
This case study aimed to investigate inter-repetition differences in joint kinetics for a single athlete during the acceleration phase of sprinting. One well-trained male sprinter performed three maximal effort 40-m sprints in an indoor experimental site. Using the fastest and slowest trials, spatiotemporal, ground reaction forces, and joint moment variables were calculated step to step for 16 steps. The fastest trial was accompanied by the greater mean net anteroposterior force. Moreover, there were greater hip extension and ankle plantar flexion moments, as well as a smaller knee extension moment, in the fastest trial. Accordingly, producing greater hip extension and ankle …

Lower Limb Tri-Joint Synchrony During Running: A Longitudinal Age-Based Study, Ceri E. Diss
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Cluster Phase analysis was used to examine age-related changes in synchrony between three joints of the lower limb during running stance. Ten male, endurance athletes (Age = 53.54±2.56 years [M50]) participated in the study at baseline (0 years) and then returned for re-testing after seven years (Age = 60.49±2.56 years [M57]). Lower limb coordinate and ground reaction forces were collected as participants performed running trials at a velocity of 3.83±0.40 m/s contacting the force plate with their preferred limb. Statistical parametric mapping identified that the hip, knee and ankle joint synchrony during the stance phase did not change. However tri-joint …
Moving On Slopes: Issues And Challenges From A Biomechanical Perspective, Hermann Schwameder
Moving On Slopes: Issues And Challenges From A Biomechanical Perspective, Hermann Schwameder
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Moving on slopes is part of daily living locomotion, but also several sport disciplines are performed on inclined terrain. From a biomechanical perspective locomotion on slopes is a challenging task as additional work has to be done compared to locomotion on flat terrain. Moving downwards supports the locomotion due to gravity, however, steep slopes often lead to high speeds caused by the transfer of potential to kinetic energy. Then locomotion is accompanied with the challenge to control speed. Another issue is the aspect of joint loading when moving on slopes. An increase of potential or kinetic energy is associated with …

Beyond The Figure Of The Problem Gambler: Locating Race And Sovereignty Struggles In Everyday Cultural Spaces Of Gambling, Fiona Nicoll
Journal of Law and Social Policy
As gambling has become a ubiquitous feature of many neoliberal capitalist societies, the problem gambler has become a familiar cultural figure, invoked in regulation, popular culture and everyday life. This article brings critical research on governmentality together with cultural studies and critical Indigenous scholarship on whiteness, race and sovereignty to understand the racial biopolitics of gambling beyond the individual subject of problem gambling. I argue that, for settler-colonial states, gambling plays a role in maintaining tropes of cultural representation and securing legal and political power within an overarching system of white racial entitlement. An investigation of cultural spaces and products …

Prioritizing Suitable Locations For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Based On Social Factors In Philadelphia, Zachary Christman, Mahbubur Meenar, Lynn Mandarano, Kyle Hearing
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
Municipalities across the United States are prioritizing green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) projects due to their potential to concurrently optimize the social, economic, and environmental benefits of the “triple bottom line”. While placement of these features is often based on biophysical variables regarding the natural and built environments, highly urbanized areas often exhibit either limited data or minimal variability in these characteristics. Using a case study of Philadelphia and building on previous work to prioritize GSI features in disadvantaged communities, this study addresses the dual concerns of the inequitable benefits of distribution and suitable site placement of GSI using a model …

Tailoring Electrospun Carbon Nanofiber Properties For Improving Chemical Sorption, Yi Han
Doctoral Dissertations
Activated carbon nanofiber (ACNF), as a novel electrospun polyacrylonitrile-based sorptive material, takes advantage of nanoscale fabrication to reduce mass transfer limitations while maintaining a membrane structure. Steam activated ACNF has been compared with commercial activated carbons and exhibits fast sorption rates and capacity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. However, to increase effectiveness for difficult to remove micropollutants, changes to the surface chemistry was required. For the initial modification to introduce carboxylic acids on the surface, a range of oxidants were compared including nitric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid, potassium permanganate, osmium tetroxide followed with potassium permanganate or oxone®, and ruthenium …

Background: Mammalian cells are flexible and can rapidly change shape when they contract, adhere, or migrate. The nucleus must be stiff enough to withstand cytoskeletal forces, but flexible enough to remodel as the cell changes shape. This is particularly important for cells migrating through confined spaces, where the nuclear shape must change in order to fit through a constriction. This occurs many times in the life cycle of a neutrophil, which must protect its chromatin from damage and disruption associated with migration. Here we characterized the effects of constricted migration in neutrophil-like cells. Results: Total RNA sequencing identified that migration …

The field of diagnostics continues to advance rapidly with a variety of novel approaches, mainly dependent upon high technology platforms. Nonetheless much diagnosis, particularly in developing countries, still relies upon traditional methods such as microscopy. Biological material, particularly nucleic acids, on archived glass slides is a potential source of useful information both for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes. There are significant challenges faced when examining archived samples in order that an adequate amount of amplifiable DNA can be obtained. Herein, we describe a model system to detect low numbers of bacterial cells isolated from glass slides using (laser capture microscopy) LCM …

Population Dynamics And Genotypic Richness Of The Threatened Acropora Spp. And Their Hybrid In The U.S. Virgin Islands, Hannah F. Nylander-Asplin
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Since the 1980’s, there has been an unprecedented decline in the reef-building Caribbean corals, Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata, which has led to their listing as “threatened” under the U.S Endangered Species Act. Despite this protective status, these Acropora species continue to experience declines primarily attributed to disease, global climate change, and storm damage. Recent evidence suggests the hybrid of these threatened species (A. prolifera) is found at abundances similar to or higher than the parental species at many sites throughout the Caribbean. However, there is still much that is unknown as to how and why hybrids may …
