Positioning Animal Welfare In The One Health Concept Through Evaluation Of An Animal Welfare Center In Skopje, Macedonia, Miroslav Radeski
Positioning Animal Welfare In The One Health Concept Through Evaluation Of An Animal Welfare Center In Skopje, Macedonia, Miroslav Radeski
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
The Animal Welfare Center (AWC) in Macedonia was established in 2009. The objectives of the center are animal welfare (AW) education, research, raising public awareness of AW, and increasing cooperation between the stakeholders. One Health (OH) was not the major focus of the AWC work initially, but, rather, a focus that evolved recently. The objective of this study was to evaluate the AWC from the OH perspective as an example case for positioning the AW within the overall OH concept. Three types of evaluation were performed: (1) assessment of OH-ness, by quantitative measurement of the operational and infrastructural aspects of …

Precocious Development Of Self-Awareness In Dolphins, Rachel Morrison, Diana Reiss
Precocious Development Of Self-Awareness In Dolphins, Rachel Morrison, Diana Reiss
Publications and Research
Mirror-self recognition (MSR) is a behavioral indicator of self-awareness in young children and only a few other species, including the great apes, dolphins, elephants and magpies. The emergence of self-awareness in children typically occurs during the second year and has been correlated with sensorimotor development and growing social and self-awareness. Comparative studies of MSR in chimpanzees report that the onset of this ability occurs between 2 years 4 months and 3 years 9 months of age. Studies of wild and captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have reported precocious sensorimotor and social awareness during the first weeks of life, but no …
Evidence For Energetic Tradeoffs Between Physical Activity And Childhood Growth Across The Nutritional Transition, Samuel S. Urlacher, Karen L. Kramer
Evidence For Energetic Tradeoffs Between Physical Activity And Childhood Growth Across The Nutritional Transition, Samuel S. Urlacher, Karen L. Kramer
Publications and Research
Despite broad implications for understanding human life history, energetics, and health, the impact of physical activity on childhood growth remains unclear. Particularly understudied is the effect of secular changes in physical activity on child development. We address these shortcomings using data spanning the transition from traditional to semi-developed economy among Yucatec Maya agriculturalists. Anthropometric and behavioral observation data were collected from children living in a subsistencebased rural community in 1992 and again in 2012 following the introduction of a school and mechanized technologies but minimal overt dietary change. Multiple regression analyses demonstrate dramatic twenty-year transformations in how children spent their …

The Effect Of Dairy Cow Breed On Milk Production, Cow Traffic And Milking Characteristics In A Pasture-Based Automatic Milking System, John Shortall, Cathriona Foley, Roy D. Sleator, Bernadette O'Brien
Dept. of Biological Sciences Preprints
Despite the increasing frequency of integrated automatic milking (AM) and pasture-based systems, there is limited knowledge available on the suitability of different dairy cow breeds to these systems. Thus, the objective of this experiment was to establish the performance of three breeds in a pasture-based AM system with respect to milk production, cow traffic and milking characteristics. The breeds examined were Holstein Friesian (HF), Jersey x HF (JEX) and Norwegian Red x HF (NRX), all of which have been previously identified as being compatible with conventional milking pasture-based systems. The experiment was conducted in mid-lactation and variables measured included milking …

Temporal Migration Patterns Between Natal Locations Of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus Colubris) And Their Gulf Coast Stopover Site, Theodore J. Zenzal Jr., Andrea Contina, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Frank R. Moore
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Autumn latitudinal migrations generally exhibit one of two different temporal migration patterns: type 1 where southern populations migrate south before northern populations, or type 2 where northern populations overtake southern populations en route. The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a species with an expansive breeding range, which allows opportunities to examine variation in the timing of migration. Our objective was to determine a relationship between natal origin of ruby-throated hummingbirds and arrival at a Gulf coast stopover site; and if so, what factors, such as differences in body size across the range as well as the …

Heroic Women In Deuteronomistic History, Miriam R. Alejandrino
Heroic Women In Deuteronomistic History, Miriam R. Alejandrino
Landas
In her essay, Miriam R. Alejandrino examines the Hebrew term gibbôr to identify and describe female heroines (gibbôr) within the Deuteronomistic History. Despite the strong patriarchal culture surrounding these sacred texts, Alejandrino highlights figures like Rahab, Deborah, Jael, Hannah, Michal, Abigail, Huldah, and an unnamed woman as heroic. These individuals risked their lives and made vital sacrifices for the well-being of God's chosen people and the nation. Ultimately, these biblical narratives bear witness to the significant, active role that women play in fulfilling the divine plan for humanity.
A Critique Of Gender Ideology, James Mctavish
A Critique Of Gender Ideology, James Mctavish
Landas
James McTavish, F.M.V.D., critiques gender ideology for causing confusion among developing children, especially those experiencing gender dysphoria. He argues that disconnecting gender choice from biological sex exacerbates distress and encourages immoral behaviors, such as homosexual relationships, sex reassignment surgeries, and a laissez-faire sexual attitude. Emphasizing that gender-confused adolescents require clear guidance to navigate sexual maturation, McTavish aligns with Pope Francis’s teachings in Laudato Si’. The Pope asserts that valuing one's biological masculinity or femininity is essential for self-recognition, allowing individuals to joyfully accept and find mutual enrichment in God the Creator's diverse design.

Testing Social Bond Theory On Hispanic Youth, Carla Alvarez
Theses and Dissertations
Hirschi's social bond theory plays a substantial role in the explanation of juvenile delinquency. While social bond theory appears to play an important role in explaining delinquency among Non- Hispanic Whites, research on Hispanic populations is limited. The purpose of this study is to test the validity of social bond theory within the context of delinquency among a sample of Hispanic youth. In this research, self-administered surveys were given to 169 middle school students at United Independent School District (UISD) in Laredo, Texas. Assault, school delinquency, and public disturbance were used as measures of delinquency. Multiple regression analyses were employed …

Strategies to replace retinal photoreceptors lost to damage or disease rely upon the migration of replacement cells transplanted into sub-retinal spaces. A significant obstacle to the advancement of cell transplantation for retinal repair is the limited migration of transplanted cells into host retina. In this work, we examine the adhesion and displacement responses of retinal progenitor cells on extracellular matrix substrates found in retina as well as widely used in the design and preparation of transplantable scaffolds. The data illustrate that retinal progenitor cells exhibit unique adhesive and displacement dynamics in response to poly-l-lysine, fibronectin, laminin, hyaluronic acid, and Matrigel. …

Stream Microbial Communities Show Resistance To Pharmaceutical Exposure, E. J. Rosi, H. A. Bechtold, D. Snow, M. Rojas, A. J. Reisinger, J. J. Kelly
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Residues of pharmaceuticals are increasingly detected in surface waters throughout the world. In four streams in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, we detected analgesics, stimulants, antihistamines, and antibiotics using passive organic samplers. We exposed biofilm communities in these streams to the common drugs caffeine, cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, and diphenhydramine. Respiration rates in the least urban stream were suppressed when exposed to these drugs, but biofilm functioning in the most urban stream was resistant to drug exposure. Exposure to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin altered bacterial community composition at all sites, with the greatest change occurring in the most urban stream. These results indicated that continuous …

To date, the role of elasticity in drug delivery remains elusive due to the inability to measure microscale mechanics and alter rheology without affecting chemistry. Herein, we describe the in vitro cellular uptake and in vivo tumor uptake of nanolipogels (NLGs). NLGs are composed of identical lipid bilayers encapsulating an alginate core, with tunable elasticity. The elasticity of NLGs was evaluated by atomic force microscopy, which demonstrated that they exhibit Young’s moduli ranging from 45 ± 9 to 19,000 ± 5 kPa. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic cells exhibited significantly greater uptake of soft NLGs (Young’s modulus13.8 MPa). In an orthotopic breast …

Noncontact Three-Dimensional Diffuse Optical Imaging Of Deep Tissue Blood Flow Distribution, Guoqiang Yu, Yu Lin, Chong Huang
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Patents
The present invention provides for three-dimensional reflectance diffuse optical imaging of deep tissue blood flow distribution that removes the need for probe-tissue contact, thereby allowing for such technology to be applied to sensitive, vulnerable, damaged, or reconstructive tissue. The systems utilize noncontact application and detection of near-infrared light through optical lens and detection through a linear array or two-dimensional array of avalanche photodiodes or a two-dimensional array of detectors provided by charge-coupled-device (CCD). Both further feature a finite-element-method (FEM) based facilitation to provide for three-dimensional flow image reconstruction in deep tissues with arbitrary geometries.
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Itraconazole Analogues For The Treatment Of Medulloblastoma, Jennifer Pace
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Itraconazole Analogues For The Treatment Of Medulloblastoma, Jennifer Pace
Doctoral Dissertations
Recently, two separate high-throughput screens (HTS) identified itraconazole (ITZ), a well-known antifungal agent, as both an inhibitor of the hedgehog (Hh) pathway and angiogenesis (IC50 = 690 nM and 160 nM, respectively). Dysregulation of both the Hh pathway and angiogenesis are implemented in the growth and metastasis of various types of cancer. Aberrant Hh signaling may lead to cell proliferation and tumor growth most notably associated with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and medulloblastoma (MB). Currently, there are a few Hh pathway inhibitors that are FDA approved for the treatment of BCC. However, there has been an emergence of resistance …

The SnH2 and SnD2 molecules have been detected for the first time in the gas phase by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and emission spectroscopic techniques through the Ã1B1–X̃1A1 electronic transition. These reactive species were prepared in a pulsed electric discharge jet using (CH3)4Sn or SnH4/SnD4 precursors diluted in high pressure argon. Transitions to the electronic excited state of the jet-cooled molecules were probed with LIF, and the ground state energy levels were measured from single rovibronic level emission spectra. The LIF spectrum of SnD2 …

Investigating Prosodic Accommodation In Clinical Interviews With Depressed Patients, Brian Vaughan, Carolina De Pasquale, Lorna Wilson, Charlie Cullen, Brian Lawlor
Conference Papers
Six in-depth clinical interviews, involving six elderly female patients (aged 60+) and one female psychiatrist, were recorded and analysed for a number of prosodic accommodation variables.
Our analysis focused on pitch, speaking time, and vowel-space ratio. Findings indicate that there is a dynamic manifestation of prosodic accommodation over the course of the interactions. There is clear adaptation on the part of the psychiatrist, even going so far as to have a reduced vowel-space ratio, mirroring a reduced vowel-space ratio in the depressed patients. Previous research has found a reduced vowel-space ratio to be associated with psychological distress; however, we suggest …

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Background: Graves’ is disease an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland caused by circulating anti-thyroid receptor antibodies (TRAb) in the serum. TRAb mimics the action of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and stimulates the thyroid hormone receptor (TSHR), which results in hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) and goiter. Methimazole (MMI) is used for hyperthyroidism treatment for patients with Graves’ disease.
Methods: We have developed a model using a system of ordinary differential equations for hyperthyroidism treatment with MMI. The model has four state variables, namely concentration of MMI (in mg/L), concentration of free thyroxine - FT4 (in pg/mL), and concentration of TRAb …
