Surgical Interventions For Advanced Parameningeal Rhabdomyosarcoma Of Children And Adolescents., Paul J Choi, Joe Iwanaga, R Shane Tubbs, Emre Yilmaz

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Owing to its rarity, rhabdomyosarcoma of the head and neck (HNRMS) has seldom been discussed in the literature. As most of the data is based only on the retrospective experiences of tertiary healthcare centers, there are difficulties in formulating a standard treatment protocol. Moreover, the disease is poorly understood at its pathological, genetic, and molecular levels. For instance, 20% of all histological assessment is inaccurate; even an experienced pathologist can confuse rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) with neuroblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and lymphoma. RMS can occur sporadically or in association with genetic syndromes associated with predisposition to other cancers such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome and …

A New Toolset For Protein Expression And Subcellular Localization Studies In Citrus And Its Application To Citrus Tristeza Virus Proteins, Amit Levy, Choaa El-Mochtar, Chunxia Wang, Michael M. Goodin, Vladimir Orbovic

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Background

Transient gene expression is a powerful tool to study gene function in plants. In citrus, Agrobacterium transformation is the method of choice for transient expression studies, but this method does not work efficiently with many gene constructs, and there is a need for a more robust transient expression system in citrus leaves. Biolistic particle delivery is an alternative to Agrobacterium transformation, and in some plants, such as Arabidopsis, gives higher transformation rates in leaf tissues than Agrobacterium.

Results

Here we describe an improved method for gene expression in epidermal cells of citrus leaves, using the Bio-Rad Helios gene-gun. …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a small DNA fragment circulating in the bloodstream originating from both non-tumor- and tumor-derived cells. A previous study showed that a plasma telomeric cfDNA level decreases in sporadic breast cancer patients compared to controls. Tumor suppressor gene products including BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1&2) play an important role in telomere maintenance. In this study, we hypothesized that the plasma telomeric cfDNA level is associated with the mutation status of BRCA1&2 genes. To test this hypothesis, we performed plasma telomeric cfDNA quantitative PCR (qPCR)-based assays to compare 28 women carriers of the BRCA1&2 mutation with age-matched controls …

Exploration Of The Germline Genome Of The Ciliate Chilodonella Uncinata Through Single-Cell Omics (Transcriptomics And Genomics), Xyrus X. Maurer-Alcalá, Rob Knight, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Separate germline and somatic genomes are found in numerous lineages across the eukaryotic tree of life, often separated into distinct tissues (e.g., in plants, animals, and fungi) or distinct nuclei sharing a common cytoplasm (e.g., in ciliates and some foraminifera). In ciliates, germline-limited (i.e., micronuclear-specific) DNA is eliminated during the development of a new somatic (i.e., macronuclear) genome in a process that is tightly linked to large-scale genome rearrangements, such as deletions and reordering of protein-coding sequences. Most studies of germline genome architecture in ciliates have focused on the model ciliates Oxytricha trifallax, Paramecium tetraurelia, and Tetrahymena thermophila, for which …

Benefit Of Intensity Modulated Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy For Post Mastectomy Chest Wall Irradiation, John Doiron Jan 2018

Benefit Of Intensity Modulated Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy For Post Mastectomy Chest Wall Irradiation, John Doiron

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: The delivery of post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) with bolus electron conformal therapy (BECT) for patients with left-sided breast cancer can reduce second cancer complication probability (SCCP) compared to modern rotational intensity modulated x-ray (IMXT) techniques such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) or Tomotherapy. However, rotational IMXT yields superior levels of dose homogeneity compared to BECT. This study investigates the use of intensity modulated (IM) BECT (IM-BECT) to improve dose homogeneity in the chest wall (CW) region of the PMRT planning target volume (PTV) abutted to parallel opposed IMXT tangents for the remaining PTV for a clinically-representative set of patients, …

Characterizing Cdom Spectral Variability Across Diverse Regions And Spectral Ranges, Brice K. Grunert, Colleen B. Mouw, Audrey B. Ciochetto

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Satellite remote sensing of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) has focused on CDOM absorption (aCDOM) at a reference wavelength, as its magnitude provides insight into the underwater light field and large-scale biogeochemical processes. CDOM spectral slope, SCDOM, has been treated as a constant or semiconstant parameter in satellite retrievals of aCDOM despite significant regional and temporal variabilities. SCDOM and other optical metrics provide insights into CDOM composition, processing, food web dynamics, and carbon cycling. To date, much of this work relies on fluorescence techniques or aCDOM in spectral ranges unavailable to current …

Plexin-B1 Signaling In Contact Inhibition Of Locomotion Between Osteoclasts And Osteoblasts, Abhijit Deb Roy Jan 2018

Plexin-B1 Signaling In Contact Inhibition Of Locomotion Between Osteoclasts And Osteoblasts, Abhijit Deb Roy

Doctoral Dissertations

Bone remodeling is critical for maintenance of bone health and requires a balance of bone resorption by osteoclasts followed with formation by osteoblasts. These opposing activities are spatially and temporally segregated and coordinated on the bone surface. Chemoattraction between osteoclasts and osteoblasts has been extensively investigated and has been proposed to direct osteoblasts to the site of bone resorption. However, the mechanism by which osteoclasts and osteoblasts are spatially segregated on the bone surface remains unknown. In this thesis, I demonstrate that osteoclasts induce contact inhibition of locomotion in migrating osteoblasts, which may enable spatial segregation of these cells. I …

Characterization Of The Transcriptional Elongation Factor Ell3 In B Cells And Its Role In B-Cell Lymphoma Proliferation And Survival, Lou-Ella M.M. Alexander

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The studies presented in this dissertation establish the dynamics of Eleven nineteen Lysine-rich leukemia (ELL) family of elongation factors during B cell differentiation and provide a description of ELL3 function in B cells.

The transition from a mature naïve B cells into an activated B cell is dependent on a large increase in transcriptional output, which is followed by focused expression on secreted immunoglobulin upon terminal differentiation into plasma cell. While ELL family members have previously been implicated in alternative splicing at the immunoglobulin heavy chain locus in plasma cells, their presence and function prior to differentiation is currently not …

Mechanisms And Identification Of Unsteady Separation Development And Remediation, Matthew Scott Melius Jan 2018

Mechanisms And Identification Of Unsteady Separation Development And Remediation, Matthew Scott Melius

Dissertations and Theses

Unsteady flow separation represents a highly complex and important area of study within fluid mechanics. The extent of separation and specific time scales over which it occurs are not fully understood and has significant consequences in numerous industrial applications such as helicopters, jet engines, hydroelectric turbines and wind turbines. A direct consequence of unsteady separation is the erratic movement of the separation point which causes highly dynamic and unpredictable loads on an airfoil. Current computational models underestimate the aerodynamic loads due to the inaccurate prediction of the emergence and severity of unsteady flow separation especially in response to a sudden …

Methylation In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Is Lineage Specific With Associated Mutations Present Globally, Jody Phelan, Paola Florez De Sessions, Leopold Tientcheu, Joao Perdigao, Diana Machado, Rumina Hasan, Zahra Hasan, Indra L. Bergval, Richard Anthony, Ruth Mcnerney

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification of the genome involved in regulating crucial cellular processes, including transcription and chromosome stability. Advances in PacBio sequencing technologies can be used to robustly reveal methylation sites. The methylome of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex is poorly understood but may be involved in virulence, hypoxic survival and the emergence of drug resistance. In the most extensive study to date, we characterise the methylome across the 4 major lineages of M. tuberculosis and 2 lineages of M. africanum, the leading causes of tuberculosis disease in humans. We reveal lineage-specific methylated motifs and strain-specific mutations that are …

The Constitution Of Mothers: Gender Equality And Social Reproduction In The United States And The World, Julie C. Suk

ConLawNOW

In March of 2017, on the heels of the Women’s March, Nevada became the first state in 35 years to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). If Nevada’s ratification is legally valid, then ratification by merely two additional states would be sufficient to add a sex equality guarantee to the U.S. Constitution. But the question remains: would the ERA change what the law does to gender relations and gender equality—or would a constitutional guarantee of sex equality be merely symbolic today? Even though the Equal Protection Clause is now read to prohibit sex discrimination in most instances, and statutes prohibit …

The vertebrate extinction rate over the past century is approximately 22 – 100 times greater than background extinction rates [1] and large mammals are particularly at risk [2, 3]. Quaternary megafaunal extinctions have been attributed to climate change [4], overexploitation [5] or a combination of the two [6]. Rhinoceroses (Family: Rhinocerotidae) have a rich fossil history replete with iconic examples of climate-induced extinctions [7], but current pressures threaten to eliminate this group entirely. The Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is among the most imperiled mammals on earth. The 2011 population was estimated at ≤ 216 wild individuals [8] and currently the …

Early white matter (WM) changes are common in dementia and may contribute to functional decline. We here examine this phenomenon in an induced dementia model for the first time. We report a novel and selective form of myelin injury as the first manifestation of tauopathy in the adult central nervous system. Myelin pathology rapidly followed the induction of a P301 tau mutation associated with fronto-temporal dementia in humans (rTG4510 line). Damage involved focal disruption of the ad-axonal myelin lamella and internal oligodendrocyte tongue process, followed by myelin remodeling with features of re-myelination that included myelin thinning and internodal shortening. The …

Resources are a core currency of species interactions and ecology in general (e.g., think of food webs or competition). Within parasite-infected hosts, resources are divided among the competing demands of host immunity and growth as well as parasite reproduction and growth. Effects of resources on immune responses are increasingly understood at the cellular level (e.g., metabolic predictors of effector function), but there has been limited consideration of how these effects scale up to affect individual energetic regimes (e.g., allocation trade-offs), susceptibility to infection, and feeding behavior (e.g., responses to local resource quality and quantity). We experimentally rewilded laboratory mice (strain …
