Indiana Record For Onthophagus Taurus (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae): Northwestward Range Extension, Adrienne E. Smith

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

The scarab, Onthophagus taurus Schreber, was introduced from Europe, although the details of its introduction are unknown (Fincher and Woodruff 1975). It was first collected in the Florida panhandle in 1971 (Fincher and Woodruff 1975); by 1974 its range had extended into Georgia, and by 1980 it had reached South and North Carolina (Fincher et al. 1983).

Feasibility Of Using Cryostored Colorado Potato Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Eggs For Rearing Edovum Puttleri (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), R. F. W. Schroder Jan 2018

Feasibility Of Using Cryostored Colorado Potato Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Eggs For Rearing Edovum Puttleri (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), R. F. W. Schroder

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Cryostored eggs of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) eggs were suitable hosts for Edovum puttleri. Parasitism rates were low, however this study was first to show that rearing the parasite on eggs stored at ultra low temperatures (-70 0 C) is feasible. This method of storage will facilitate mass production of E. puttleri as well as prevent loss of the parasite in the event of a crash in the Colorado potato beetle colony.

New Records For Euhrychiopsis Lecontei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Their Densities In Wisconsin Lakes, Laura L. Jester, Michael A. Bozek, Sallie P. Sheldon, Daniel R. Helsel Jan 2018

New Records For Euhrychiopsis Lecontei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) And Their Densities In Wisconsin Lakes, Laura L. Jester, Michael A. Bozek, Sallie P. Sheldon, Daniel R. Helsel

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The native aquatic weevil, Euhrychiopsis lecontei is currently being researched as a potential biological control for the exotic aquatic macrophyte Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum), yet little is known about its specific distribution in North America. In this study, E. lecontei was collected in 25 of 27 lakes surveyed for the weevil in Wisconsin, greatly increasing the known distribution of the species in this state. E. lecontei densities evaluated in 14 Wisconsin lakes ranged from <0.01 to 1.91 weevils per apical stem of milfoil. These new records indicate that E. lecontei is widespread throughout Wisconsin and is associated with natural declines of M. spicatum in some lakes. Additional sampling for E. lecontei and …

Relationship Between Fruit Yield And Damage By Codling Moth And Plum Curculio In A Biologically-Managed Apple Orchard, M. Sean Clark, Stuart H. Gage Jan 2018

Relationship Between Fruit Yield And Damage By Codling Moth And Plum Curculio In A Biologically-Managed Apple Orchard, M. Sean Clark, Stuart H. Gage

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Fruit yield, codling moth (Cydia pomonella) damage, and plum curculio (Conotrachelus nenuphar) damage were monitored over an 8-year period in a O.5-ha, biologically-managed apple orchard in southwestern Michigan. The relationship between yield and damage was examined for both of these pests. The orchard showed clear biennial bearing patterns of alternating high and low yields. A significant negative correlation was found for yield and percent- age damage by codling moth but not for plum curculio damage. However, the estimated amount of fruit damaged by codling moth remained relatively stable over the period, indicating that changes in percentage damage depended on yield …

Life Cycle Of Isoperla Lata (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) In A Central Wisconsin Trout Stream, John B. Sandberg, Stanley W. Szczytko

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Monthly qualitative samples of Isoperla lata Frison were made from January 1992 to June 1993 in Ripley Creek, a small second order trout stream in Lincoln County Wisconsin. Additional collecting and an in-stream hatching experiment were conducted in 1994. This species exhibited an S1 (slow) univoltine life cycle. Emergence was synchronous and occurred in late April through early May when stream temperatures in the field were approximately 9-14° C and laboratory stream temperatures were 7-17° C. Laboratory longevity was 2-25 (x = 18.2 ± 4.51) days for males and 7-39 (x = 21.7 ± 5.35) days for females. Mean fecundity …

Susceptibility Of The Endangered Karner Blue Butterfly (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Var. Kurstaki Used For Gypsy Moth Suppression In Michigan, Catherine Papp Herms, Deborah G. Mccullough, Leah S. Baue, Robert A. Haack, Deborah L. Miller, Normand R. Dubois Jan 2018

Susceptibility Of The Endangered Karner Blue Butterfly (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) To Bacillus Thuringiensis Var. Kurstaki Used For Gypsy Moth Suppression In Michigan, Catherine Papp Herms, Deborah G. Mccullough, Leah S. Baue, Robert A. Haack, Deborah L. Miller, Normand R. Dubois

The Great Lakes Entomologist

We investigated the phenological and physiological susceptibility of the endangered Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) to Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt), a product widely used for gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) suppression in Michigan and other infested states. We monitored phenology of the bivoltine Karner blue in two regions of Michigan from 1993 to 1995 to determine if larval stages overlapped temporally with the period of Bt application for gypsy moth suppression. Karner blue larvae of the spring generation were found during the period that Bt was applied in nearby areas in 1993 only. However, spring-generation …

Introduced Purple Loosestrife As Host Of Native Saturniidae (Lepidoptera), James G. Barbour, Erik Kiviat

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria,Lythraceae) arrived in North America nearly 200 years ago. In 1969 we first found larvae of the native Cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia) and Polyphemus (Antheraea polyphemus) moths (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) on loosestrife in the Hudson River Valley, New York, and we have since found Io (Automeris io) on this plant. A census of 4th and 5th instar saturniids in four 0.25 ha plots in purple loosestrife-gray dogwood (Cornus racemosa) wet meadows near Saugerties in 1984 indicated that Polyphemus and Cecropia larvae occurred much more frequently on loosestrife than on dogwood, a …

From 1987 to 1996, Urophora spp. have been released in 97 counties in 14 midwestern and western states. Established populations of U. affinis and U. quadrifasciata are confirmed in 85 and 95 counties, respectively, among all 14 states. These include the first reports of successful establishment of Urophora spp. in Arizona (two counties), Colorado (eight counties), Michigan (one county), Minnesota …

Evaluation Of Paederus Littorarius (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) As An Egg Predator Of Chrysoteuchia Topiaria (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae In Wisconsin Cranberry Bogs, Sandra Haase-Statz Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Paederus Littorarius (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) As An Egg Predator Of Chrysoteuchia Topiaria (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae In Wisconsin Cranberry Bogs, Sandra Haase-Statz

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A preliminary study was conducted to determine if the rove beetle, Paederus littorarius Grav., would exhibit a feeding preference for the eggs of the pyralid moth, Chrysoteuchia topiaria Zeller, a pest in Wisconsin cranberry bogs. Individuals were offered a choice of C. topiaria eggs or Drosophila sp. adults for four days. Total number of prey items eaten was converted to weight using a multiplier based on the mean weight of 20 individuals of each prey item, respectively. A significant preference for Drosophila adults was observed in the preference trial; however as many as 24 C. topiaria eggs in addition to …

Hexagenia Bilineata (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae) Persists At Low Levels Of Abundance In The Lower Fox River, Wisconsin, Phillip A. Cochran, Andrew P. Kinziger Jan 2018

Hexagenia Bilineata (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae) Persists At Low Levels Of Abundance In The Lower Fox River, Wisconsin, Phillip A. Cochran, Andrew P. Kinziger

The Great Lakes Entomologist

After burrowing mayflies (Hexagenia bilineata) were first noted in the vicinity of the DePere Dam on the Fox River in 1991, adults have been observed in small numbers each summer since then. It is possible that the Fox River population has remained at low levels because of an Allee effect. In addition, it is possible that the population is still limited by poor environmental quality, presumably in the upper layer of sediment inhabited by the larvae. Two other relatively sensitive species associated with benthic habitat, the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and the lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), have been observed in …

Notes On The Life Histories Of Acrosternum Hilare And Cosmopepla Bimaculata (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) In Southern Illinois, J. E. Mcpherson, D. L. Tecic

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The life histories of Acrosternum hilare and Cosmopepla bimaculata were studied in southern Illinois from May 1972 to September 1974 and from September 1992 to June 1995. Both species were bivoltine, overwintered as adults, and became active in early spring. The subsequent generations were characterized by marked overlapping of the nymphal instars. No active adults were found after early November.

Nearctic Acleris: Resurrection Of A. Stadiana And A Revised Identity For A. Semiannula (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Michael Sabourin, Ronald J. Priest, William E. Miller Jan 2018

Nearctic Acleris: Resurrection Of A. Stadiana And A Revised Identity For A. Semiannula (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Michael Sabourin, Ronald J. Priest, William E. Miller

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Type study showed that Acleris stadiana (Barnes & Busck), currently considered a junior synonym of A. semiannula (Robinson), is in fact a distinct taxon. Although superficially similar, these taxa differ markedly in genital structure. In males of A. semiannula, the aedeagus is short, broad, and virtually straight, whereas in those of A. stadiana, it is long, thin, and sharply bent. What was known in literature as A. semiannula proved to be A. stadiana. We redefine both A. semiannula and the resurrected A. stadiana.

Leaf Herbivory Induces Resistance Against Florivores In Raphanus Sativus, Andrew C. Mccall, Samantha Case, Kelsy Espy, Grant Adams, Stephen J. Murphy Jan 2018

Leaf Herbivory Induces Resistance Against Florivores In Raphanus Sativus, Andrew C. Mccall, Samantha Case, Kelsy Espy, Grant Adams, Stephen J. Murphy

Student Publications

Florivory can have significant negative effects on plant fitness, driving selection for resistance traits in flowers. In particular, herbivory to leaves may induce resistance in flowers because herbivores on leaves often become florivores on flowers as plant ontogeny proceeds. The literature on inducible resistance in floral tissues is limited, so we used a series of experiments to determine whether prior leaf damage by Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) caterpillars affected florivore preference and performance on wild radish (Raphanus sativus L.). We found that Spodoptera exigua larvae preferred petals from control plants versus petals from plants exposed to prior leaf damage, and …

Chlorophyll Concentration And Optical Absorption Spectra Of Particulate And Dissolved Material, Collected At Several Depths On Deepend Cruises Dp05 From January-December 2017, Chuanmin Hu

DEEPEND Datasets

The optical absorption spectra from seawater’s particulate and dissolved components can be used to compute the penetration of light to various depths, estimate the proportion of living to non-living particulate matter, assess photosynthetic light availability and the type of phytoplankton present, and to validate satellite or airborne ocean color measurements. Chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations are often used to estimate the amount of phytoplankton present, and to allow extrapolation of in situ fluorometric measurements. Water was collected using a CTD rosette near the surface and from several depths at each sampling station occupied by the DEEPEND cruise DP05 (see GRIIDC dataset …

Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion beyond a critical threshold of a polyglutamine (polyQ) tract near the N-terminus of the huntingtin (htt) protein. Expanded polyQ promotes the formation of a variety of oligomeric and fibrillar aggregates of htt that accumulate into the hallmark proteinaceous inclusion bodies associated with HD. htt is also highly associated with numerous cellular and subcellular membranes that contain a variety of lipids. As lipid homeostasis and metabolism abnormalities are observed in HD patients, we investigated how varying both the sphingomyelin (SM) and ganglioside (GM1) contents modifies the interactions between htt …

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is palliative and prostate cancer (CaP) recurs as lethal castration-recurrent/resistant CaP (CRPC). One mechanism that provides CaP resistance to ADT is primary backdoor androgen metabolism, which uses up to four 3α-oxidoreductases to convert 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (DIOL) to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The goal was to determine whether inhibition of 3α-oxidoreductase activity decreased conversion of DIOL to DHT. Protein sequence analysis showed that the four 3α-oxidoreductases have identical catalytic amino acid residues. Mass spectrometry data showed combined treatment using catalytically inactive 3α-oxidoreductase mutants and the 5α-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, decreased DHT levels in CaP cells better than dutasteride alone. Combined blockade …

Environmental Effects On Drosophila Brain Development And Learning, Xia Wang, Amei Amei, J. Steven De Belle, Stephen P. Roberts Jan 2018

Environmental Effects On Drosophila Brain Development And Learning, Xia Wang, Amei Amei, J. Steven De Belle, Stephen P. Roberts

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Brain development and behavior are sensitive to a variety of environmental influences including social interactions and physicochemical stressors. Sensory input in situ is a mosaic of both enrichment and stress, yet little is known about how multiple environmental factors interact to affect brain anatomical structures, circuits and cognitive function. In this study, we addressed these issues by testing the individual and combined effects of sub-adult thermal stress, larval density and early-adult living spatial enrichment on brain anatomy and olfactory associative learning in adult Drosophila melanogaster. In response to heat stress, the mushroom bodies (MBs) were the most volumetrically impaired among …

Objective: This individual patient data (IPD) meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions (PSI) on quality of life (QoL), emotional function (EF), and social function (SF) in patients with cancer, and to study moderator effects of demographic, clinical, personal, and intervention-related characteristics. Methods: Relevant studies were identified via literature searches in 4 databases. We pooled IPD from 22 (n = 4217) of 61 eligible randomized controlled trials. Linear mixed-effect model analyses were used to study intervention effects on the post-intervention values of QoL, EF, and SF (z-scores), adjusting for baseline values, age, and cancer type. We studied …

Temporal Migration Patterns Between Natal Locations Of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus Colubris) And Their Gulf Coast Stopover Site, Theodore J. Zenzal Jr., Andrea J. Contina, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Frank R. Moore Jan 2018

Temporal Migration Patterns Between Natal Locations Of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus Colubris) And Their Gulf Coast Stopover Site, Theodore J. Zenzal Jr., Andrea J. Contina, Jeffrey F. Kelly, Frank R. Moore

Faculty Publications

Background

Autumn latitudinal migrations generally exhibit one of two different temporal migration patterns: type 1 where southern populations migrate south before northern populations, or type 2 where northern populations overtake southern populations en route. The ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is a species with an expansive breeding range, which allows opportunities to examine variation in the timing of migration. Our objective was to determine a relationship between natal origin of ruby-throated hummingbirds and arrival at a Gulf coast stopover site; and if so, what factors, such as differences in body size across the range as well as the …

Physiology Faculty Publications

We reported that amyloid β peptide (Aβ42) activated neutral SMase 2 (nSMase2), thereby increasing the concentration of the sphingolipid ceramide in astrocytes. Here, we show that Aβ42 induced mitochondrial fragmentation in wild-type astrocytes, but not in nSMase2-deficient cells or astrocytes treated with fumonisin B1 (FB1), an inhibitor of ceramide synthases. Unexpectedly, ceramide depletion was concurrent with rapid movements of mitochondria, indicating an unknown function of ceramide for mitochondria. Using immunocytochemistry and super-resolution microscopy, we detected ceramide-enriched and mitochondria-associated membranes (CEMAMs) that were codistributed with microtubules. Interaction of ceramide with tubulin was confirmed by cross-linking to N-[9-(3-pent-4-ynyl-3-H-diazirine-3-yl)-nonanoyl]-D-erythro-sphingosine …

Carbon Dioxide Fluxes And Plants Interactions Across The Succession Of A Created Brackish Marsh In Southwestern Louisiana, Andy T. Muench

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine: 1) carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes in different plant communities in a created and natural brackish marsh and 2) the role of an early colonizing species, Spartina alterniflora, in facilitating or suppressing a later colonizer and higher marsh species, Spartina patens. CO2 fluxes were measured in four key successional stages: 1) non-vegetated sediment of a newly created marsh; 2) Spartina alterniflora-dominated areas of a newly created marsh; 3) S. alterniflora-dominated natural marsh; and 4) Spartina patens- dominated natural marsh. Spartina alterniflora-dominated areas were sinks for …

Zinc is a transition metal that has a long history of use as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also soothes pain sensations in a number of animal models. However, the effects and mechanisms of zinc on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy remain unknown. Here we show that locally injected zinc markedly reduces neuropathic pain in male and female mice induced by paclitaxel, a chemotherapy drug, in a TRPV1-dependent manner. Extracellularly applied zinc also inhibits the function of TRPV1 expressed in HEK293 cells and mouse DRG neurons, which requires the presence of zinc-permeable TRPA1 to mediate entry of zinc into the cytoplasm. Moreover, TRPA1 …
