Examining The Information Seeking Behaviour Of Undergraduate Students Of Navrongo Campus Of The University For Development Studies, Joana A. Pwadura, Florence Dedzoe-Dzokotoe Plockey Mrs., Franklina Adjoa Yebowaa

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The academic library has to undertake research in order to understand and improve upon its performance in line with the mission and vision of the mother institution. This paper therefore examined the information seeking behaviour of undergraduate students of the University for Development Studies, Navrongo Campus to have an insight into their information gathering processes and how to guide them. Three hundred (300) students from a total population of 987 were purposively sampled in the Campus Library within a period of two weeks in December, 2013 between the peak hours of 10.00am to 12.00 noon. The library’s registration list served …

Microfluidic Technology And Application In Urinal Analysis, Jiwen Xiang Feb 2018

Microfluidic Technology And Application In Urinal Analysis, Jiwen Xiang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Microfluidic technology offers numerous advantages in minimizing and integrating the traditional assays. However, the lack of efficient control components of the microfluidic systems has been hindering the widely commercialization of the technology. The research work in this dissertation focused on the development of effective control components for microfluidic applications.

A linear peristaltic pump was firstly designed, fabricated, and tested for conventional microfluidics by synchronously compressing the microfluidic channel with a miniature cam-follower system in Chapter 2. The miniature cam-follower system and microfluidic chip was prototyped using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology and soft lithography technology. Results from experimental test showed that …

Hard-Sphere-Like Dynamics In Highly Concentrated Alpha-Crystallin Suspensions, Preeti Vodnala, Laurence Lurio, Michael C. Vega, Elizabeth Gaillard

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The dynamics of concentrated suspensions of the eye-lens protein alpha crystallin have been measured using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Measurements were made at wave vectors corresponding to the first peak in the hard-sphere structure factor and volume fractions close to the critical volume fraction for the glass transition. Langevin dynamics simulations were also performed in parallel to the experiments. The intermediate scattering function f(q,τ) could be fit using a stretched exponential decay for both experiments and numerical simulations. The measured relaxation times show good agreement with simulations for polydisperse hard-sphere colloids.

Exploring Autophagy With Gene Ontology., Paul Denny, Marc Feuermann, David P. Hill, Ruth C Lovering, Helene Plun-Favreau, Paola Roncaglia

Faculty Research 2018

Autophagy is a fundamental cellular process that is well conserved among eukaryotes. It is one of the strategies that cells use to catabolize substances in a controlled way. Autophagy is used for recycling cellular components, responding to cellular stresses and ridding cells of foreign material. Perturbations in autophagy have been implicated in a number of pathological conditions such as neurodegeneration, cardiac disease and cancer. The growing knowledge about autophagic mechanisms needs to be collected in a computable and shareable format to allow its use in data representation and interpretation. The Gene Ontology (GO) is a freely available resource that describes …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Elevated atmospheric input of nitrogen (N) is currently affecting plant biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The growth and survival of numerous plant species is known to respond strongly to N fertilization. Yet, few studies have assessed the effects of N deposition on seed quality and reproductive performance, which is an important life-history stage of plants. Here we address this knowledge gap by assessing the effects of atmospheric N deposition on seed quality of the ancient forest herb Anemone nemorosa using two complementary approaches. By taking advantage of the wide spatiotemporal variation in N deposition rates in pan-European temperate and boreal forests …

Landscape-Scale Effects Of Supra-Seasonal Drought On Semi-Aquatic Snake Assemblages, Philip N. Vogrinc, Andrew M. Durso, Christopher T. Winne, John D. Willson

Biology Faculty Publications

Climate change is predicted to alter the frequency and intensity of precipitation events, placing stress on freshwater aquatic ecosystems and their associated wildlife. Thus, understanding interspecific variation in drought sensitivity and the repeatability of those responses across heterogeneous landscapes is critical. Semi-aquatic snakes serve important roles within aquatic ecosystems and several species are threatened. Yet, little is known about the effects of drought on semi-aquatic snake populations or assemblages. We systematically trapped 20 isolated wetlands in South Carolina before (2006) and after (2013) a multi-year supra-seasonal drought to determine drought-induced shifts in occupancy and detection for five semi-aquatic snake species. …

Murky Projects And Uneven Information Policies: A Case Study Of The Psychological Strategy Board And Cia, Susan Maret

Secrecy and Society

This case study discusses the Truman and Eisenhower administration's (1951-1953) short-lived Psychological Strategy Board (PSB). Through the lens of declassified documents, the article recounts the history and activities of the Board, including its relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and clandestine projects that involve human experimentation. Primary documents of the period suggest that institutional secrecy, coupled with inconsistent information policies, largely shielded CIA's BLUEBIRD, ARTICHOKE, and MKULTRA from the Board. This subject has not been previously reported in the research literature, and supplements existing historical understanding of the PSB's mission under the broad umbrella of psychological warfare.

How American Sign Language-English Interpreters Who Can Hear Determine Need For A Deaf Interpreter For Court Proceedings, Christopher Tester Feb 2018

How American Sign Language-English Interpreters Who Can Hear Determine Need For A Deaf Interpreter For Court Proceedings, Christopher Tester

Journal of Interpretation

This study investigates how and when hearing interpreters in the United States decide there is a need for a Deaf interpreter in court proceedings. Previous publications have strongly suggested that it is best practice to work with a Deaf interpreter for specific situations (NCIEC, 2007). In this study, the author utilized two frameworks: Brennan & Brown’s (1997) Equality before the Law, and Mathers’ (2009) Deaf interpreters in court: an accommodation that is more than reasonable, to design this study which brings to light the criteria used by hearing ASL-English interpreters when calling upon Deaf interpreters. This research also …

Euscorpius

Two new species of Buthidae scorpions of the genus Tityus C. L. Koch, 1836 are herein described from the Greater Antillean island of Hispaniola. One of them belongs to the "crassimanus" species-group and is known from an adult pair collected at Massif de la Hotte, in southwestern Haiti. The other belongs to the "quisqueyanus" species-group and is known from a single adult female from a high peak in the Central Range (= Cordillera Central), in northwestern Dominican Republic. Moreover, two fossil taxa from this island are retained as junior synonyms of Tityus geratus Santiago-Blay, 1988†.

Spatial Relationship Between Bone Formation And Mechanical Stimulus Within Cortical Bone: Combining 3d Fluorochrome Mapping And Poroelastic Finite Element Modelling, Alessandra Carriero, A. F. Pereira, A. J. Wilson, S. Castagno, B. Javaheri, A. A. Pitsillides, M. Marenzana, S. J. Shefelbine

Publications and Research

Bone is a dynamic tissue and adapts its architecture in response to biological and mechanical factors. Here we investigate how cortical bone formation is spatially controlled by the local mechanical environment in the murine tibia axial loading model (C57BL/6). We obtained 3D locations of new bone formation by performing ‘slice and view’3D fluorochrome mapping of the entire bone and compared these sites with the regions of high fluid velocity or strain energy density estimated using a finite element model, validated with ex-vivo bone surface strain map acquired ex-vivo using digital image correlation. For the comparison, 2D maps of the average …

Overdispersed Spatial Patterning Of Dominant Bunchgrasses In Southeastern Pine Savannas, Katherines A. Hovanes, Kyle E. Harms, Paul R. Gagnon, Jonathan A. Myers, Bret D. Elderd

Biology Faculty Research

Spatial patterning is a key natural history attribute of sessile organisms that frequently emerges from and dictates potential for interactions among organisms. We tested whether bunchgrasses, the dominant plant functional group in longleaf pine savanna groundcover communities, are nonrandomly patterned by characterizing the spatial dispersion of three bunchgrass species across six sites in Louisiana and Florida. We mapped bunchgrass tussocks of >5.0 cm basal diameter in three [Formula: see text] plots at each site. We modeled tussocks as two-dimensional objects to analyze their spatial relationships while preserving sizes and shapes of individual tussocks. Tussocks were overdispersed (more regularly spaced than …
