Expression Analysis Of Liver-Specific Circulating Micrornas In Hcv-Induced Hepatocellular Carcinoma In Egyptian Patients., Lobna Mourad, Amged Ouf, Suher Kamal Zada
Faculty Journal Articles
Due to the absence of reliable and accurate biomarkers for the early detection of liver malignancy, circulating microRNAs have recently emerged as great candidates for prompt cancer identification. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential of liver-specific circulating microRNAs as an accurate non-invasive diagnostic tool for early diagnosis of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methodology: A total of 165 patients were enrolled in this study and categorized into four main groups: 42 chronic hepatitis C (CHC) without cirrhosis, 45 CHC with cirrhosis (LC), 38 HCC with HCV patients, and 40 healthy controls. The expression …

Tree mortality rates appear to be increasing in moist tropical forests (MTFs) with significant carbon cycle consequences. Here, we review the state of knowledge regarding MTF tree mortality, create a conceptual framework with testable hypotheses regarding the drivers, mechanisms and interactions that may underlie increasing MTF mortality rates, and identify the next steps for improved understanding and reduced prediction. Increasing mortality rates are associated with rising temperature and vapor pressure deficit, liana abundance, drought, wind events, fire and, possibly, CO2 fertilization-induced increases in stand thinning or acceleration of trees reaching larger, more vulnerable heights. The majority of these mortality drivers …
Nature Of Sin, Dylan Halter
Nature Of Sin, Dylan Halter
The Kabod
Sin is inescapable. Since the Fall, mankind has been doomed. God continuously provided His people an opportunity for repentance, but the cataclysmic effects of sin continued. Understanding the nature of sin is one of the most important doctrines for apologetics, evangelism, discipleship, and pastoral teachings. Upon firmly applying hermeneutics, historical tradition, theological exegesis, and practical applications, followers of the Way are more equipped to do the Will of the Lord. The serpent succeeded in the garden, but the Savior defeated death on the Cross, bringing about redemption and restoration for all of humanity.

Kevin Adams, a practicing attorney in Maine, represents John Brown in a dispute with Brown's landlord. Brown is facing eviction as a result of his inability to pay the rent. Over the course of the representation, Adams has come to believe that Brown is abusing his son. Brown--who is working two jobs but still cannot pay his rent--has told Adams of the incredible pressure he is facing. Brown has admitted that the pressure is getting to him and that he feels bad that he has been “taking it out on the kid.” Brown also told Adams that he had been …

Circumvention Medical Tourism And Cutting Edge Medicine: The Case Of Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy, I. Glenn Cohen
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
'Medical Tourism" is the travel of patients from a home country to a destination country for the primary purpose of receiving health care. "Circumvention Tourism" is a sub-type of such travel where the motivation is circumventing a domestic prohibition on accessing a medical service. This Article focuses on such circumvention tourism for cutting-edge medicine. I use the recently reported case of travel to Mexico for Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy as a springboard for examining the legal and ethical issues raised by the practice and to discuss restrictive regulation in place in the United States.
This Article derives in part from the …
The Relationship Between Leadership Qualities And Group Collaboration In Third-Grade Students., Vanessa Hernandez
The Relationship Between Leadership Qualities And Group Collaboration In Third-Grade Students., Vanessa Hernandez
Education Undergraduate Research
Leadership in any area of vocation is widely recognized as a vital component of success. Coupled with this is the ability to work collaboratively with other individuals. This study focused on leadership qualities, mainly emotional intelligence, in third-grade students and whether those qualities affected their level of collaboration. The specific leadership qualities observed for this study were narrowed down to emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skill) along with cognitive intelligence and confidence (Goleman, 2004). This exploratory mixed-method required the participants (23 third-grade students) to interact with their peers in a small group setting, with the goal of …

In order to identify an object in video, a comparison with an exemplar object is typically needed. In this paper, we discuss the methodology used to identify an object detected in underwater video that was recorded during an investigation into Amelia Earhart's purported crash site. A computer aided design (CAD) model of the suspected aircraft component was created based on measurements made from orthogonally rectified images of a reference aircraft, and validated against historical photographs of the subject aircraft prior to the crash. The CAD model was then superimposed on the underwater video, and specific features on the object were …

The hippocampus, like the neocortex, has a morphological structure that is complex and variable in its folding pattern, especially in the hippocampal head. The current study presents a computational method to unfold hippocampal grey matter, with a particular focus on the hippocampal head where complexity is highest due to medial curving of the structure and the variable presence of digitations. This unfolding was performed on segmentations from high-resolution, T2-weighted 7T MRI data from 12 healthy participants and one surgical patient with epilepsy whose resected hippocampal tissue was used for histological validation. We traced a critical image feature composed of the …

Automatic Recognition Of Marine Traffic Flow Regions Based On Kernel Density Estimation, Wei-Feng Li, Bin Mei, Guo-You Shi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The automatic recognition of traffic flow regions can provide decision support for ships’ automatic route design and route planning. This study analyzes the characteristics of ships’ trajectory structures and builds a course and distance model. Pearson correlation coefficients are used for measuring the similarities of the models and clustering trajectories, and kernel density estimation is used for estimating the probability density of clustered trajectories. An automatic recognition algorithm for traffic flow regions is proposed. This study examines ships’ automatic identification system data in Laotieshan channel, China. The traffic separation scheme regions and traffic intersectional regions are recognized automatically, and the …

Chlorophyll Concentration Derived From Microwave Remote Sensing Measurements Using Artificial Neural Network Algorithm, Young-Heon Jo, Dae-Won Kim, Hyuna Kim
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Ocean color optic remote sensing has been used to estimate various biogeochemical constituents to monitor ocean environmental changes in coastal regions and global open oceans. However, the most problematic issue in utilizing ocean color measurements is cloud coverage. Thus, this study introduces a neural network (NN) algorithm to derive Chlorophyll a (Chl) concentrations, which are unavailable due to the presence of clouds. Because ocean color remote sensing depends on cloud coverage, microwave measurements, including sea-surface temperature, cloud, water vapor, precipitation, and winds, were used as inputs for the NN algorithm. Accordingly, the NN algorithm was designed to predict Chl using …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The proximate composition, pH, free amino acids, ammonia and nucleotide-related compounds of raw abalone, commercial processed abalone and abalone analogues were investigated. Taurine was the dominant free amino acid (FAA), accounting for 61.4% of the total FAA in raw hybrid abalone and 29.9% in processed abalone. Abalone analogue products had a high amount of free amino acids, but only 0.3-2.5% taurine. The proximate composition and pH value of abalone changed only slightly after blanching and processing, while the taurine and glycogen content decreased by 50%. FAA profiles were significantly different between commercial processed abalone and analogue products, both of which …

Urban ecosystems are widely hypothesized to be more ecologically homogeneous than natural ecosystems. We argue that urban plant communities assemble from a complex mix of horticultural and regional species pools, and evaluate the homogenization hypothesis by comparing cultivated and spontaneously occurring urban vegetation to natural area vegetation across seven major U.S. cities. There was limited support for homogenization of urban diversity, as the cultivated and spontaneous yard flora had greater numbers of species than natural areas, and cultivated phylogenetic diversity was also greater. However, urban yards showed evidence of homogenization of composition and structure. Yards were compositionally more …

Until recently, there were few rodent models available to study the interaction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and drug taking. Like PTSD, single prolonged stress (SPS) produces hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction and alters psychostimulant self-administration. Other stressors, such as isolation stress, also alter psychostimulant self-administration. However, it is currently unknown if isolation housing combined with SPS can alter the acquisition or maintenance of cocaine self-administration. The current study applied modified SPS (modSPS; two hours restraint immediately followed by cold swim stress) to rats raised in an isolation condition (Iso), enrichment condition (Enr), or standard condition (Std) to measure changes in …

Philadelphia chromosome–positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Phþ ALL) is currently treated with BCR-ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in combination with chemotherapy. However, most patients develop resistance to TKI through BCR-ABL1–dependent and –independent mechanisms. Newly developed TKI can target Phþ ALL cells with BCR-ABL1–dependent resistance; however, overcoming BCR-ABL1–independent mechanisms of resistance remains challenging because transcription factors, which are difficult to inhibit, are often involved. We show here that (i) the growth of Phþ ALL cell lines and primary cells is highly dependent on MYB-mediated transcriptional upregulation of CDK6, cyclin D3, and BCL2, and (ii) restoring their expression in MYB-silenced …
