A Pilot Study Exploring Nursing Knowledge Of Depression And Suicidal Ideation In Kenya, Timothy Muga, Gladys Mbuthia, Samwel Gatimu, Rachel Rossiter
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Nurses play key roles in recognizing, diagnosing, managing, and referring persons with mental disorders. This cross-sectional study assessed mental health literacy (depression and suicidal ideation) among nurses in a private urban referral hospital in Kenya. Nurses read a vignette and answered questions regarding diagnosis, treatment/interventions, and related attitudes and beliefs. Thirty-seven nurses (12 males) completed the questionnaire. Three correctly identified the diagnosis and 23 identified depression only. Although 75% noted the symptoms were extremely distressing, fear, and stigma were common reactions. This highlights challenges in mental health promotion/prevention in Kenya, and suggests continuous nursing education and curriculum enhancement is needed.
Creating A More Collaborative Tomorrow: Development Of A Patient Engagement Curriculum For A School Of Nursing And Health Professions, Alicia Digiammarino
Creating A More Collaborative Tomorrow: Development Of A Patient Engagement Curriculum For A School Of Nursing And Health Professions, Alicia Digiammarino
Master's Projects and Capstones
Background: Healthcare has been moving steadily toward a patient-centered paradigm that seeks to involve patients more in their own care. Teaching communication skills to future health professionals can increase such patient participation. Despite the shift to patient-centered care, there is almost no training in patient engagement techniques provided to students at the University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions. Purpose: This project aimed to design and develop a sustainable patient engagement curriculum that meets the unique needs of faculty and students at the University. Methods: Interviews were conducted with eight faculty members to understand …

Santa Clara Valley Medical is one of the busiest emergency departments in California. Patients are coming into the Emergency Department (ED) with needs that could have been prevented if they would have had access or knowledge about preventative measures such as the importance of having health insurance or seeing a primary care physician. In order to decrease the use of ED services for non-medical needs the launching of the Health Advocates Program will help address social determinants of health to an underserved community, including access to safe and affordable housing, food, health services, job training, legal aid and more. The …

School-Based Health Centers In High Poverty Schools, Felicia Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This capstone project was part of a team project completed by two school principals in Hillsborough County, Florida. The project began because of our passion for meeting the needs of our students in urban high poverty schools being supported by varying district turnaround initiatives. We looked at our district’s previous and current attempts to increase student success in high poverty schools. We questioned the ways in which supports and resources were provided, and we explored ways through which success in high poverty schools might be increased by redefining the supports and resources provided. Our appreciative exploration of the topic was …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This capstone project was part of a group project completed by five school and district administrators in Hillsborough County, Florida.
The project began because of our passion for teachers who are able to establish a culture of care in their classrooms that support students academically but transform their learning through experiences that enable them to be more highly engaged and productive students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, perceived academic abilities, and backgrounds.
My focus in this group project looked at school climate, culture and student behavior in high needs schools. I asked, what steps can be taken by a school …

Making Online Group-Work Work: Scripts, Group Awareness And Facilitation, Peter Reimann
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
Even though group work for learning is a well-established and extensively researched pedagogy, teachers find it still challenging to engage students in productive collaborative learning that extends over time (e.g. weeks – in the context of project-based learning) and is computer-mediated in addition to being classroom-based. I introduce three practices that have been shown to foster collaborative knowledge production and learning: first, group scripts; second, knowledge building and knowledge awareness; and third, group facilitation. I discuss how teachers can integrate these into their teaching practices to address three challenges to productive group learning: unequal participation, lack of awareness, and stratified …

How To Help Kids Succeed - School-Based Programs And Social Mobility, Theresa Bell
Honors Theses
Education is the key to Social Mobility and unless children from poor families get a college degree, their economic mobility is severely restricted (Tough, 2016 pg 2). In November of 2005, the City unveiled a college tuition incentive to Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) graduates, The Kalamazoo Promise. According to the Kalamazoo Promise website (2017), the purpose of the Promise is to, “provide a real meaningful and tangible opportunity for all students,” as “education is an important key to financial wellbeing.” Though access to an affordable college education is possible for Kalamazoo students eligible for The Promise, the numbers show that …

Making A Difference In Learning Through Arts-Rich Pedagogy, Robyn Ewing Am
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
There is unequivocal evidence that arts-rich pedagogies enhance student social and emotional wellbeing and, consequently, academic learning outcomes across the curriculum. Yet many primary teachers report they lack the expertise and/or confidence to embed quality arts processes and experiences in what is increasingly described as an overcrowded curriculum. This presentation reviews the research findings about the impact and sustainability of School Drama, an initiative developed through a partnership between the Sydney Theatre Company and The University of Sydney. An innovative co-mentoring teacher professional learning program and drama-based intervention, the program aims to develop primary teachers’ professional knowledge of and expertise …

Acer Research Conference Proceedings (2018), Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
There is no shortage of opinion about more and less effective ways of teaching. Schools are continually presented with strategies, programs and approaches that claim to be ‘research-based’, ‘evidence-based’ or even ‘brainbased’. Vocal advocates of particular teaching methods promote their proposed solutions in the media. But how many of these programs and methods have solid foundations in research? And how can teachers and school leaders distinguish exaggerated marketing claims from teaching strategies shown through research to be effective in improving student outcomes? Research Conference 2018 examines research evidence around teaching practices that make a difference. It brings together leading international …

Racial Differences In The Impact Of Adolescent Depression On Families In Tads, Alfiee M. Breland-Noble, Camelia A. Harb, Kepher H. Makambi, Michele J. Wong
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
This manuscript examines racial differences in the impact of adolescent depression between White, African American, and Latino families. Findings are from the Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study (TADS), a multi-site clinical research study evaluating the efficacy of CBT and Fluoxetine for treating adolescents with major depressive disorder. Primary caretakers of 439 adolescents with depression were interviewed. Results demonstrated that compared to White families, African American and Latino families were more likely to report increased feelings of tiredness or anergia (p<.05) and more physical health problems (p<.01) associated with caring for a depressed teen. The conclusion suggests the need for a better understanding of depression in people and families of color and offers recommendations for further research.

Center for Social Development Research
This report presents findings and insights from Refund to Savings: Applications for myRA, a collaborative project involving the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Washington University in St. Louis, and Intuit, Inc. The project explored methods of promoting the myRA (My Retirement Account) savings program at tax time—that is, when households file their taxes. It focused specifically on opportunities in an online tax-filing setting and in person at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. The first component of the project examined the retirement needs of low- and moderate-income (LMI) tax filers through a large, national, online survey. It also …
Gender Mainstreaming And Gender Policies In Contemporary Taiwan, Doris T. Chang
Gender Mainstreaming And Gender Policies In Contemporary Taiwan, Doris T. Chang
Journal of International Women's Studies
In 1995, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (hereafter referred to as the Platform for Action) promulgated during the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women called for the use of gender mainstreaming as a strategy in policy formulations for pursuing the goals of gender equality. Feminist leaders of NGOs who joined the Taiwanese government in the mid-1990s were strategically positioned to contribute to policy formulations that would integrate gender-mainstreaming perspectives into policies and institutions in the Taiwanese government. Among the various approaches to gender-mainstreaming, taking positive actions to set pro-women policy agendas have been the predominant approach deployed …

Family-Work Conflict And Performance Of Women-Owned Enterprises: The Role Of Social Capital In Developing Countries--Implications For South Africa And Beyond, Ngek Brownhilder Neneh
Journal of International Women's Studies
One critical issue that is highly overlooked in developing regions is the family embeddedness of women entrepreneurs, even though the women in developing countries simultaneously hold several roles in the family and their businesses. As such, this study focused on evaluating the impact of family-work conflict (FWC) on the performance of women-owned businesses in a developing world context. The findings indicate that FWC negatively influenced the performance of women-owned businesses. Additionally, the moderating effect of social capital in this association was examined. The findings suggest that both bonding social capital and bridging social capital buffers the negative effect of FWC …

Using A Model Of Economic Solvency To Understand The Connection Between Economic Factors And Intimate Partner Violence, Heidi Gilroy, Judith Mcfarlane, Nina Fredland, Sandra Cesario, Angeles Nava, John Maddoux
Journal of International Women's Studies
Poverty is a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV); however, little is known about the economic state at which women are no longer at risk for IPV due to their economic status, which is economic solvency. A Model of Economic Solvency in women has been developed from the literature that includes four factors: human capital, social capital, sustainable employment, and independence. The purpose of this research is to validate the model in a sample of women reporting IPV. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the model using data from 280 abused women. Examination of the model yielded …

Vulnerabilities Of Women Workers In The Readymade Garment Sector Of Bangladesh: A Case Study Of Rana Plaza, Humayun Kabir, Myfanwy Maple, Syadani Riyad Fatema
Journal of International Women's Studies
The Bangladeshi readymade garment (RMG) sector is an important feature of the country’s economic development, as it is the highest contributor to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Bangladesh. This industry initiated a revolution in the employment sector particularly through involving women in the workplace, in a culture where employment of women remains rare. While offering new opportunities to women, this sector has failed to ensure a secure and safe working environment for female employees. Consequently, women workers are vulnerable to multiple hazards, frequent disasters, and adverse occupational health outcomes. These vulnerabilities have become a prime concern for national and international …

Intersectionality And An Intra-Household Analysis Of The Freedom To Make Decisions On The Use Of Household Products: Evidence From Rural Tanzania, Christina Mwivei Shitima
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study uses intra-household and intersectionality theories to analyze the relative benefit that household member’s gain from the use of goods produced by households living along the Simiyu River in Tanzania’s Meatu District. The ability to benefit from the use of goods produced by a household is defined as the freedom that a person has concerning decision-making about the goods that are produced within the household. Data were collected from different household members, including household heads, spouses and children who were 18 years and older and who were involved in the production of goods. The study findings highlight that the …
Apology Or No Apology: Indigenous Models Of Subjection And Emancipation In Pakistani Women’S Fiction, Aroosa Kanwal
Apology Or No Apology: Indigenous Models Of Subjection And Emancipation In Pakistani Women’S Fiction, Aroosa Kanwal
Journal of International Women's Studies
This survey paper focuses on Pakistani Anglophone literary narratives that examine the multiple identities of victimized women as opposed to the commonly endorsed essentialist and reductive argument that is too easily conscripted into post-9/11 global discourses surrounding women of colour. In the context of the global hegemony of Western scholarship, my purpose in this paper is to foreground the simultaneous liberation and subjection, centricity and marginality, of Pakistani women. I argue that it is important to situate third world women’s subjection as well as agency in relation to the class, regional, ethnic and religious diversities that inform the degree and …

'Playing It Right?’: Gendered Performances Of Professional Respectability And ‘Authenticity’ In Greek Academia, Maria Tsouroufli
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper draws on the career narrative interviews with 15 female academics to unravel the performative politics of gender in Greek Medical Schools. I explore the gender positioning and embodied performances of Greek women as they relate to the contingencies of participation, recognition, and esteem in academic medicine and framed within the wider gendered discourses and structures of the increasingly neo-liberal Greek academia and society. Drawing on Butler’s notion of performativity, I illustrate the possibilities of making the successful Greek female academic subject through subjection to normative, gendered discourses of respectability, encompassing integrity, respectable aesthetics, and affective work and scripted …

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Fire use has played an important role in human evolution and subsequent dispersals across the globe, yet the relative importance of human activity and climate on fire regimes is controversial. This is particularly true for historical fire regimes of the Americas, where indigenous groups used fire for myriad reasons but paleofire records indicate strong climate–fire relationships. In North American grasslands, decadal-scale wet periods facilitated widespread fire activity because of the abundance of fuel promoted by pluvial episodes. In these settings, human impacts on fire regimes are assumed to be independent of climate, thereby diminishing the strength of climate–fire relationships. We …

Problem: The acute deterioration of patients outside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are safety and quality concerns. Studies have shown that these deteriorations are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study aims to standardize the Rapid Response Team (RRT) nurse documentation in response to an Advanced Alert Monitor (AAM) alert, as at baseline no such alert nor standardized response and documentation exist.
Context: Hospitals are continually challenged to innovate and create systems that can track multiple parameters and identify at-risk patients earlier on. An Early Warning System (EWS) in combination with a RRT significantly reduces patients’ potential for clinical …

Prospectus For Improving Measure Ii Scores Of Hospice Visits When Death Is Imminent In The Hospice Item Set, David Ainsworth
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Center for Medicare Services (CMS) created a new quality measure pair to collect data on hospice visit patterns by a registered nurse in the last three days of life (Measure I), and at least two visits by a social worker, home health aide, licensed vocational nurse or spiritual counselor in the last seven days of life (Measure II). A hospital-based hospice organization created a quality improvement project to address this problem and improve both parts of the measure pair, but special emphasis was placed on improving Measure II, as initial data revealed the …
