Quality Of Life, Stress Perception, And Quality Of Social Networks In Persons Living With Brain Injury: An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of A Community-Based Program, Barbara P. White, Abigail Brinkman, Barbara P. Kresge, Lisa Couture

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Background: This paper examines specific program elements of a community-based program for individuals living with brain injury. Results from a previous study suggested that members who attended regularly reported lower stress perception, higher quality of life perception, and higher social connectedness than did peers living in the community without such supports. In this study, we sought to understand reasons for their perceptions about how the program may have been helpful in shaping their perspectives of living with the effects of brain injury.

Methods: An explanatory case-study approach was applied, using multiple cases. Nine individuals were randomly selected from a subsample …

Examining Self-Care Among Individuals Employed In Social Work Capacities: Implications For The Profession, J. Jay Miller, Joann Lianekhammy, Erlene Grise-Owens Oct 2018

Examining Self-Care Among Individuals Employed In Social Work Capacities: Implications For The Profession, J. Jay Miller, Joann Lianekhammy, Erlene Grise-Owens

Social Work Faculty Publications

Increasingly, the social work profession recognizes the need for more attention to self-care. Concomitantly, this growing awareness and ethical commitment is fostering a burgeoning self-care movement. However, despite recognition about the importance of self-care, there is a paucity of research that explicitly examines self-care practices among social workers. This cross-sectional study examined the self-care practices of individuals employed in social work capacities (n=1,011) in one southeastern state in the United States. Findings suggest that participants in the sample engaged in personal and professional self-care practices only moderately. Further, data suggest significant group differences in the practice of self-care, by relationship …

Global Learners – Local Adjustments: Examining The Impact Of Culture And Education Backgrounds On Academic Readiness, Adaptation And Success Of A Cohort Of Chinese Mba Students, Patrick Guilbaud, Duha Hamed

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

Adult global learners (AGLs), particularly those with lack of knowledge or understanding of American culture, often have a difficult time adjusting to academic life in the US. We report on a study conducted to determine impacts of focused interventions to facilitate adaptation and resilience of a cohort of 28 Chinese MBA AGLs at Winthrop University, a Master’s Comprehensive Public University in the Southeastern region of the US. The AGLs were middle and senior managers from the city of Liuzhou, China. Targeted interventions were made to help the Liuzhou AGLs adapt to the rigors, challenge and demands both academically and socially …

Serving The Professional Graduate Student: Health Sciences, Julie Evener Oct 2018

Serving The Professional Graduate Student: Health Sciences, Julie Evener

Education Collection

Students pursuing graduate-level degrees for careers in the health sciences have specific, and sometimes unique, needs regarding library resources and information literacy (IL) skills and instruction. The key to these considerations are the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) taught in health science curriculums. EBP, also known as evidence-based medicine or evidence-informed practice, is best defined as “the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.” The library can help both in providing resources that contain the current best evidence and in teaching graduate health sciences students how to find the …

Comparison Of Dental Students' Self-Evaluation And Faculty Evaluation Of Communication Skills During A Standardized Patient Exercise, R. Constance Wiener, Christopher Waters, Joan Doris, Daniel W. Mcneil Oct 2018

Comparison Of Dental Students' Self-Evaluation And Faculty Evaluation Of Communication Skills During A Standardized Patient Exercise, R. Constance Wiener, Christopher Waters, Joan Doris, Daniel W. Mcneil

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

The aims of this retrospective study, conducted in 2017, were to explore dental students’ perceptions of their first standardized patient encounters and to assess the relationship between students’ self-evaluation and faculty members’ evaluation of students’ communication skills in those encounters. Data from a simulation training laboratory at one U.S. dental school were obtained for all 46 second-year students, who had a standardized patient communication learning session. The students had completed self-evaluations before and after a debriefing with a clinical psychology and/or social work faculty member and three or four student peers. The faculty members had also completed evaluations of the …

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Educational And Disciplinary Backgrounds Of American Librarians, 1950-2015, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Young-In Kim Oct 2018

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Educational And Disciplinary Backgrounds Of American Librarians, 1950-2015, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Young-In Kim

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Discussions of diversity in American librarianship usually focus on gender or ethnicity, but historical studies also show a lack of diversity in educational and disciplinary backgrounds. Librarians traditionally hail from the humanities, especially English and history. But as current educational attention shifts to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, are librarians reflecting this change? Anonymized data from ALA-accredited graduate programs from the last five years was collected, coded, and classified to determine librarians’ educational and disciplinary backgrounds and in what ways, if any, they differ from the past 65 years and from the contemporary U.S. general population. Unsurprisingly, we …

Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett Oct 2018

Student Attitudes Toward Sex Offender Policies And Laws In An Era Of High Profile Sex Crimes In The News, Amber Bennett

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This is a study looking at the attitudes that undergraduate college students taking introductory sociology and criminology courses have toward sex offender policies and laws such as community notification, residence restrictions, and the registry system. Voluntary participants were also asked to look at the appropriateness of the punishment given to perpetrators in case studies based off real cases. Results showed that there are potential gender differences in the attitudes about appropriateness of notification and the registration of sex offenders. There were less favorable attitudes toward chemical and surgical castration. Further research should be done to look at different types of …

Parent Perception Of The Working Alliance, Parent Self-Efficacy, And Parent Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Child Therapy Outcome, Christopher Glenn Chandler Oct 2018

Parent Perception Of The Working Alliance, Parent Self-Efficacy, And Parent Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Child Therapy Outcome, Christopher Glenn Chandler

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that parent-therapist working alliance, parent self-efficacy, and parent locus of control have on child therapy outcomes. Bordin’s model of the working alliance provides a framework for measuring the collaboration between the parents and therapists while Social Cognitive Theory informs the decision to assess parent self-efficacy and parent locus of control.

The research questions were as follows: 1) Does a strong parent and therapist working alliance, as perceived by the parent, predict improved outcomes in child counseling? 2) Does parent self-efficacy predict outcomes in child counseling? 3) Does parent locus of …

Social-Ecological Systems Influence Ecosystem Service Perception: A Programme On Ecosystem Change And Society (Pecs) Analysis, Cristina Quintas-Soriano, Jodi S. Brandt, Katrina Running, Colden V. Baxter, Dainee M. Gibson, Jenna Narducci, Antonio J. Castro

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Facing the challenges of environmental and social changes, sustainable management of ecosystem services is a worldwide priority. The Programme on Ecosystem Change and Society (PECS) approach provides a unique opportunity for promoting transdisciplinary place-based comparative research for social-ecological systems (SES) management. As part of the PECS-sponsored WaterSES project, we used four place-based SES research sites to analyze patterns in perceptions of ecosystem services. Our data come from about 1,500 face-to-face surveys conducted in southern Spain, the south-central Great Plains of Oklahoma (USA), and the Portneuf and Treasure Valleys, Idaho (USA). Specifically, this study aimed to (1) describe and compare perceptions …

Prison-Based Dog Training Programs: Standard Protocol, Tyler M. Han, Erin Flynn, Joseph Winchell, Emily Gould, Jaci Gandenberger, Dana Barattin, Philip Tedeschi, Kevin N. Morris

Animal Training and Obedience Collection

Across the United States, the number of prison-based dog training programs (PDPs) has increased substantially over the past several years. Currently, there are approximately 255 PDPs across 47 states that operate in a variety of correctional settings; however, there is little information available on how to successfully develop and implement a PDP. As a result, the research team from the Institute for Human-Animal Connection (IHAC) has developed a standard protocol to help guide PDP development and implementation.

This report identifies common practices of PDPs and incorporates both general and context-specific recommendations that were gathered from interviews with PDP staff, relevant …
