By using the Munsell color chart to assign color codes to five areas of testable distal humeri from two Bronze Age Umm an-Nar tombs (Unar 1 and Unar 2) located in the Shimal necropolis in the United Arab Emirates, a statistically significant difference between the articular …

Results suggest that the FLC, as a professional development experience, enabled faculty at different levels of e-portfolio adoption, to learn from their peers, become more confident instructors, reflect on course design, and plan for changes in the instructional use …

Champion Teams As A Mechanism For Developing Team Care Capacity, Robert M. Tolliver, Gayatri Jaishankar, Jodi Polaha

ETSU Faculty Works

"Practice transformation" toward team care as a singular undertaking can be daunting. In this presentation, we describe the development of a mechanism for small, iterative and sustainable practice changes toward team care known as "Champion Teams." Champion Teams are based on the Institute of Medicine's "learning health care system" approach in which practitioners develop an internal mechanism for and culture around digesting and implementing new evidence based practices on an ongoing basis. In addition to presenting the Champion Team concept as a strategy for implementing new team care initiatives, interprofessional providers will present two case examples from each adult and …

Community In All Education, Sophia Vancer Kooy Oct 2018

Community In All Education, Sophia Vancer Kooy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My internship experience at KIRAN allowed my newly lit interest in holistic education to connect with my lifelong passion for disability rights. Prior to my study abroad experience, I had been interested in alternative education and the role that empowerment plays in student success. I devoted research papers, conversations, and volunteer work to these fields and the organizations that contributed to them. However, I always separated these interests from my passion for disability rights. KIRAN has shown me not only the many ways in which holistic education can coincide with disability rights, but the necessity that it does. From my …

Zines For Teaching: A Survey Of Pedagogy And Implications For Academic Librarians, Susan E. Thomas Oct 2018

Zines For Teaching: A Survey Of Pedagogy And Implications For Academic Librarians, Susan E. Thomas

Publications and Research

Zines have begun to gain a place in higher education as pedagogical tools studied or made by students, and many academic libraries maintain zine collections. The library literature reveals little about how nonlibrarian faculty use zines in their classrooms. This paper describes the results of a survey of faculty from a range of academic disciplines and professions who teach with zines and other booklet forms. Survey results reveal the extent to which faculty zine pedagogies include collaboration with librarians and use of library collections. Faculty describe instructional activities and attitudes that many library professionals, including reference and instruction librarians, directors …

Internalized Racism: Biases Children And Adults Hold, Daniela G. Gonzales Oct 2018

Internalized Racism: Biases Children And Adults Hold, Daniela G. Gonzales

Student Publications

Due to one’s surroundings, many African American children have internalized these racial biases without them without consciously being aware of it. Hence, this paper highlights various studies that have done previous research on the racial biases children hold like the pioneering study, the Clark doll experiment of 1947. Furthermore, this paper elaborates on measurements of how children have internalized these biases along with the influence adults play on the lives of these children. Therefore, I expand on the many implications these biases have on the lives of African American children and suggest possible approaches to aid in the reduction of …

Real-World Research: A Qualitative Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of The Library's Role In Service-Learning, Anne Marie Gruber Oct 2018

Real-World Research: A Qualitative Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of The Library's Role In Service-Learning, Anne Marie Gruber

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Service-learning, a growing pedagogy in higher education, provides opportunities for students to contribute to communities and to reflect upon experiences ranging from direct service to advocacy. Librarians have an important but underutilized role in supporting service-learning as they contribute to institutional missions and the public purposes of academia. However, there is a gap in the literature related to faculty perceptions of information literacy instruction and skills related to service-learning. The researcher used semi-structured in-depth interviews, investigating these perceptions among 12 faculty across 10 disciplines. Findings support the role of library instruction in service-learning, with a focus on helping students engage …

Comparative Assessment Of Content Overlap Between Written Documentation And Verbal Communication: An Observational Study Of Resident Sign-Outs, Joanna Abraham, Imade Ihianle, Charlotte E Ward, Vineet M Arora, Thomas G Kannampallil

2010-2019 OA Pubs

OBJECTIVE: Effective sign-outs involve verbal communication supported by written or electronic documentation. We investigated the clinical content overlap between sign-out documentation and face-to-face verbal sign-out communication.

METHODS: We audio-recorded resident verbal sign-out communication and collected electronically completed ("written") sign-out documentation on 44 sign-outs in a General Medicine service. A content analysis framework with nine sign-out elements was used to qualitatively code both written and verbal sign-out content. A content overlap framework based on the comparative analysis between written and verbal sign-out content characterized how much written content was verbally communicated. Using this framework, we computed the full, partial, and no …

ThinkWork! Publications

Recent legislation and regulation governing Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (WIOA), and settlement agreements between states and the U.S. Department of Justice are clarifying federal intent and paving the way to supporting opportunities for people with disabilities to have meaningful jobs in their communities. With an increasing emphasis on integrated employment and an Employment First philosophy, the nation is poised for transformation that could put Americans with disabilities on a path out of poverty and towards self-sufficiency. However, there remains a significant gap in employment rates between people with and without …
